BONES at Comic-Con: Live-Blog
July 25, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
BONES is back at Comic-Con to promote its upcoming 10th season, and I’ll be live-blogging the festivities when they start around 12:30 PM PT.
Here’s the official panel description, and then check back around the panel’s start time for live updates!
“Fan-favorite actors David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel and executive producer Stephen Nathan share secrets from the set, upcoming twists and turns, and what’s in store for Booth and Brennan as Bones enters its milestone tenth season. ”
12:39 PM: We’re starting with a BONES sizzle reel!
12:41 PM: We’re getting new footage of season 10. Booth does not look to be handling things well at all in jail — he’s scruffy and getting into fights.
12:43 PM: Panelists introduction time — Nathan, Deschanel, and Boreanaz are here.
12:44 PM: Boreanaz is taking photos of his panelists, the fans, and more.
12:45 PM: “I showed up and she was looking at bones,” Boreanaz jokes of a scene they did yesterday. Actually, the duo were filming a scene from the premiere outside of an attorney’s office.
12:46 PM: “We’re picking up four months later — we’re doing this in real time,” Nathan teases. “We come back with clearly Booth in jail, and Brennan and everyone else doing everything they can to spring Booth….we start when Brennan and Angela and everyone at the Jeffersonian have finally found a break in the case. They’ve exhumed a body that could possibly solve this.”
12:47 PM: Borenaz says he pitched a scene where Brennan shaves Booth’s scruff. Deschanel says she’s clumsy, so she may cut him!
12:48 PM: “The food’s not too good — I don’t think he’s entirely too concerned about that,” Boreanaz says. “He’s a little [PTSD]-y times three…I think that he is definitely in a state of confusion with his present state of mind. where he sits in the bureau where he sits in life, where he sits with Brennan.”
12:49 PM: Now Deschanel and Nathan are teasing Boreanaz for the way he says “bullets.”
12:50 PM: “We have bones, we have foundations, we don’t live in castles,” Boreanaz says on the foundation of their relationship.
12:51 PM: “He’s been betrayed by that institution,” Nathan says of Booth’s mindset. “It really shakes the foundation of the entire premise of the show — whether he can trust the FBI, if he can get back to work.”
12:52 PM: “Booth is in prison, she is with her child, alone,” Deschanel says of Brennan’s mindset. “It is very worrisome for her: Booth is not safe in prison.”
“She’s just focusing on her work,” she adds. “When things get overwhelming and scary, she focuses on her work.”
12:54 PM: “The conspiracy is something that has been going on for decades,” Nathan teases of the conspiracy. They’ll put a stop to it in the first few episodes.
“We don’t know how complete the ending is,” Nathan says. He won’t rule out another serial killer.
12:56 PM: Boreanaz jokes (?) that Booth and Brennan will live in a mobile home.
12:57 PM: Nathan teases the episodes they’re doing this season. (All the ones he mentioned here.)
12:59 PM: Nathan reiterates the 200th will be an odd one he and BONES creator Hart Hanson will write. But yes, there will be a dead body. He says there will be “elements” of regular BONES eps.
1:00 PM: “Is anyone from Buffalo?” Nathan asks. One person says yes, and Nathan says, “One person escaped!”
Deschanel is now making Boreanaz say a bunch of different words to see how he pronounces them. After Boreanaz starts goofing around, Deschanel mock leaves.
1:02 PM: “It’s hard to conceive doing a show for this long…our characters have been through so much,” Deschanel says. “It’s really thanks to our fans for following us every night of the week, and every time.”
“It’s always a moment-to-moment thing for me,” Boreanaz says. He says he was always concerned with the current episode, not focusing on the run of the show. He praises Deschanel, saying they “don’t want to take it for granted. We want to entertain you guys…what’s important is the next scene, the next moment.”
“They’ve kept these characters alive, so when we sit down to write, there’s always something new,” Nathan says. “It doesn’t feel stale, it doesn’t feel old…here, ten years later, we’re excited to sit down because there’s so much more.”
“Who knew you could kill people in so many different ways and solve the crimes in so many different ways?” Deschanel marvels. The panelists give a shout out to the writers, including Emily Silver, who is the BONES writer repping them today.
1:06 PM: Will Deschanel direct? “I don’t know,” she says. “I wanted to direct an episode before and I got pregnant…it’s something that could be a possibility…my focus has changed a bit to be a mom. It would be nice if that happens some time.” She also points out Boreanaz has set a high bar.
1:08 PM: Describe each other in three adjectives.
Boreanaz on Deschanel: “Tempestuous. Beautiful. Sensual. Strong. Independent.”
Deschanel on Boreanaz: “Spontaneous. Fun. Crazy. Talented. Handsome. Sexy. Hot. Great instincts.”
1:10 PM: Time for fan Qs! They’re singing “fan questions” now.
Fave weapon:
Deschanel: “50 caliber direction.”
Boreanaz: “My mind. My mind is a A-1, baked potato, cut right down the middle.”
“I kind of feel like I’m sitting with Robin Williams right now,” Deschanel says when he keeps riffing.
1:12 PM: “You’re from Orange?” Boreanaz asks a fan. “I’m from apple. And I rule the universe.”
Will Cyndi Lauper return? They’re hoping she is available during the psychic episode.
1:14 PM: Boreanaz is upset by the loss of Ralph Waite. Nathan says they plan to address the loss, but they don’t want to exploit it.
1:15 PM: Will there be a musical episode? “Hart hates musicals more than anyone in the world, and vowed it would it never happen on his watch,” Nathan says. “He’s now on another show.”
They won’t totally rule it out, but it’s not planned right now.
1:17 PM: Deschanel is asked to do her “nerdy” Brennan laugh, and Deschanel notes it might be her real laugh. So he laughs.
1:18 PM: Will Zach come back? “We love Eric and Zach Addy so much,” Deschanel says. Nathan says there is no plans. “The show has moved on with new characters…he’s still in our minds, and there’s still the possibility that could happen, but no immediate plans.”
Boreanaz is shocked Hodgins has a brother and wants to know when it happened. Nathan says we will see the return of Hodgins’ brother.
1:19 PM: “I think what’s important for me is to continuously evolve with Booth,” Boreanaz says when asked about Booth’s cocky belt. “When I started the show, there were always specific things I would gravitate towards.” It was a conscious decision to retire the belt buckle for now.
1:22 PM: “I think it’s important for us, we have a big forum here,” Nathan says. “There’s a certain responsibility to look at issues that affect everybody, or issues that should affect everyone…it’s an important part of keeping the show real.” He also reveals that Silver is the one who will write the human trafficking/immigration episode this season.
1:23 PM: Does Deschanel share her character’s view on therapy? “I’ve been to therapy many times,” she says. “I believe in therapy.”
1:25 PM: On working with each other. “We learn from each other,” Deschanel says. “It’s hard to pinpoint one thing or another…I’ve learned so much from David. He had done two series before he did this show, and I had never done a show. How to pace yourself, how to protect yourself when people are pulling in different directions.”
“We’re very present,” Boreanaz adds. “If it’s chaotic….we got to tap in [to each other], we have to do this thing, we have to do this eye contact thing [and hand bump].”
1:27 PM: “I just love having these strong, female intelligent people working in science,” Deschanel says of her being drawn to her strong character.
1:28 PM Gross scene? “I put on a human hand glove once,” Deschanel says. That was nasty…I couldn’t eat my breakfast that morning.” Deschanel says they get desensitized while filming it, but while watching the show, it’s hard to watch.
“It was a decomposed person in soup and all you saw was the top of their head,” Nathan says of the one time the censors had an issue with a body.
“We have a certain responsibility to revolt you,” he adds.
1:30 PM: “One of the wonderful things about doing a TV show…is you get to see characters grow over time,” Deschanel says when asked by a young fan about whether Christine helped Brennan connect more with people. “When you love someone deeply and you’re loved by them, you can change in wonderful ways…it’s been wonderful to play that and see a character change over time.”
