FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Tyra’s College Essay

This is one of those moments that make me sure in my belief that FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is the single best television series I have ever seen. I know others have their favorites, but for me this is it.
A little background for those of you who don’t watch the show, but are considering it. Tyra Collete, the narrator, has had a tough life. She’s a beautiful girl who until about two years ago thought that her looks were her only ticket to something more. Her well meaning mother never gave her daughter hope she could be more than she was. Her sister, a stripper, represented everything Tyra didn’t want out of life. But thhen she had people come into her life that believed in her and she started to believe in herself. Tyra’s past mistakes put college at arms length. She was determined to make it happen despite the odds. Everything was riding on the all important college essay. After many failed attempts, her best friend Landry urged to dig deeper and speak from the heart…this was the result.

So glad that FNL got picked up for a few more seasons. This was definitely a favorite moment of the season for me too. It’s too bad it’ll never get recognized in the proper way.
Love this show so much! And I was glad to hear it got picked up for 2 more seasons. I think sometime this summer I’m going to go back and watch all of the episodes over again. It feels like forever since I watched season 1
i just finished watching the episode and that was, hands down, one of the best episodes of tv i’ve ever seen. it was full of so many special moments, utilizing each story line and character to the fullest, and this one with tyra was just icing on the cake. FNL truly is the best tv out there. Can’t believe there is only one episode left of the season…
There were so very many special moments in this episode, including the Tyra moment. Another moment that had me tearing up was the conversation between Grandma Saracen and Julie; she was so lucid in that moment about not wanting to hold him back.
I agree that the season has gone by so quickly; it seems like it just started. This show just keeps getting better and better; each character touches me each week in a way few do on other shows.
Yes, Alyson! The Grandma/Julie moment was beautiful; our little Julie has grown up so much and is finally putting someone ahead of herself. Tyra made me teary, this girl’s journey has been so rich and raw. What can we do to get this cast some Emmy-love? Anything?
I know some are over Landry and Tyra but I just love these two characters especially together. Let’s not forget that the essay wouldn’t have come to being without Landry telling her to dig deep. There were so many moments in this episode, none better for me than Landry throwing that block, weepy city. Can you tell Landry is my favorite?
I love this clip, but the music on Hulu is different than the aired version. That had “Something’s Going to Come” by Adem. I know it always is different on the dvds and online viewing, but just thought I’d let people know. This music is good, but the original is better and totally fits the montage.
I don’t even want Season 3 to be over! I feel so connected to the main characters and hate to see my faves leave. Are 7, Riggins, Lyla & Tyra really leaving?? 🙁 This is such a great show and the only ‘must see’ that’s even on TV right now. The entire cast deserves way more recognition.
Hope Season 4 is just as compelling!!
I totally agree – loved this clip. And I also agree that FNL is one of the best televion series out there – not because of crazy drama or outrageous story lines, but because it is truly heartfelt with terrific acting. I keep telling people to watch – if they’re not, they’re totally missing out!
Sick & wrong that the Emmy voters have not recognized anyone out of this terrific ensemble.
Maybe I should send them all of my used tissues from all the tears I have cried over this show. Think that would get their attention? (ha – gross!)
Why is it when a marvelous show with terrific charachters, morals and ethics, and true-to-family life comes along, it doesn’t get proper recognition and notariety! This is absolutely, without a doubt, the best show ever produced and so refreshing in comparison to shows that revolve around killing, crime, sex, or just plain silliness. Wake up producers and TV stations – this is what America NEEDS and WANTS; show us the FNL reruns; keep it going! I LOVE THIS SHOW!
