Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Superstition

Tonight’s episode is all about the power of the mind.  And the mind’s behind Greys’ Anatomy are nothing but brilliant.  Every character is so fully flushed out and the dialogue is sharp.  Tonight’s episode is another example of why Grey’s Anatomy is worthy of all the critical praise and accolades it receives.

In tonight’s episode, the interns and their bosses have to contend with their superstitious nature, despit their medical expertise.  See the head of the morgue says that deaths comes in 3’s or 7’s, and since Seattle Grace lost 4 patients early in the day, we can expect 3 more deaths before midnight.  This type of news does nothing to calm the nerves of the interns who are all dealing with patients who seem to be facing a life or death issues.

After losing a patient earlier in the day (along side an overly friendly She-Shepherd*), Meredith is assigned to a woman who fell from a tree after being hit by lightning. I guess that what she gets for stalking her ex-boyfriend.  But since the woman is a little off her rocker in the first place, we shouldn’t be surprised to find out that she is refusing life-saving surgery until the next morning because her horoscope predicted a bad day. Hey Meredith shouldn’t go against a woman’s instinct.  Remember a few weeks ago when Meredith didn’t want to get out of bed because she thought she was going to die.  Yeah, she ended up with her hand on a bomb…I’m just saying.

Christina’s patient is a car crash victim, who in addition to dealing with a skull injury also contends with a bad case of OCD.  I think the OCD hits a little too close to home for our Christina, as she’s quickly annoyed with the patient.  Oh wait, Christina is quickly annoyed with everyone she meets, my bad.

Dr. Burke is dealing with his own superstitions.  Seems all his lucky surgical caps are in the cleaners, and he just doesn’t feel confident without his lucky caps.  Lucky for him, Christina has one.  Or not so lucky as the case may be, as Christina is holding the cap hostage until Burke kicks George out of their apartment.  Burke enlists his trusty new sidekick to get the cap from Christina, no matter what the means.  George decides that stalking Christina may be his best bet, but after many failed attempts, it’s Izzie and her trailer park toughness that finally get Christina to break down and hand over the cap. Which leads us into the best line of the episode, and probably the best line of any TV show this week.

“Christina, I like you, I really do.  But I grew up in a  trailer park and I’m not above kicking your pampered little Beverly Hills ass, and I do mean physcially kicking your ass.”

If only Izzie’s toughness could be extended to Dying Denny.  Despite his rapid decline in health, Denny is still flirting with Izzie…gotta love a man who’s still trying to get some despite being hooked up to every machine imagineable.  Seems his efforts aren’t going unoticed – by Alex.  We learn tonight that when Alex is threatened, he’s a real prick.  Just as Denny is about to enter a risky surgery, Alex pretty much tells him he’s going to die, and it’s going to be tough on Izzie, so Denny should just lay off.  Trailer Park Izzie is lessed than pleased with Alex, and informs him that whatever little sexcapades they had going on, are now over.  Alex doesn’t take well to the news and becomes even more angry and out of control.  This anger manifests itself in a complete tirade over George’s petty and immature behavior regarding the Meredith incident.  Yeah, Alex was a jackhole, but c’mon it had to be said.  George has been acting like a 14 year old girl for the past few weeks.  He needed a little kick in the ass.

George’s other kick to the tush came from one of my new favorite characters, Callie.  Still too pissed over the Meredith situation to move on, George has yet to call Callie despite her giving him her number a while ago.  Dumb ass.  Alex’s little rant may have served a greater purpose as George finally calls Callie and sweetly asks her out.  Awww.  We love your George, we just love you more when you are a little less pathetic.

Chief Shady, which is his moniker moving forward, has yet another hidden secret.  Tonight we find out that Meredith’s mom, Ellis, drove Chief Shady to hit rock bottom when it’s revealed that he is a recovering alcoholic.  His former sponsor is need of a liver transplant, but since a new liver isn’t available to her, she has to have a very risky surgery.

As we get closer and closer to midnight, it seems that all of the patients require a visit to the OR.  And don’t think the doctors haven’t forgotton about the 7 death prediction of the morgue guy.  If this superstition is true, we can expect 3 more deaths before the night is through.  But who will it be?  Stalker-lightning chick?  OCD guy? Chief Shady’s sponsor?  Or Dying Denny?  Check back next week when I reveal what happened……ha ha, only kidding, here’s how it played out.

Stalker lightning chick was still refusing surgery until Meredith lied and revealed that her ex-boyfriend called and said he wanted her to have the surgery so she would live.  The woman’s moment of joy was short-lived as she kicked it a few minutes later.

OCD guy didn’t fare well either.  Depsite McDreamy’s best efforts, and a clean-clean-clean OR, OCD guy’s injuries were just too severe. He died-died-died.

That’s 2 out 3.  So to make the predicited 7, we have to assume the liver chick or Denny are next.  Well, as Izzie is freaking out about rumors of a death, we find out that Chief Shady’s liver operation went well.  His friend lived.  Uh oh.

Izzie, in a fit of tears is standing in Denny’s room…with a very much alive Denny.  Ok, very much alive, may be an overstatement, but Denny made it through…at least for tonight.  Yay!!  I like Denny, I won’t lie.  And after the way Alex acted tonight, I tend to agree with Izzie – she’s just too good for Alex.  Izzie admits her feelings to Denny before kissing him.  Good thing Alex didn’t see it, he might just set the hospital on fire.

So after a day full of superstitions, and examining the power of the mind, it was only 6 patients that went on to meet their maker.  And at Seattle Grace, I guess that’s what they consider a good day.

Come chat about tonight’s show in the GMMR Forums.  There’s already a Grey’s Anatomy thread started.

* Shout out from the Grey’s writers to TVGasm.com who, from what I know, coined Derek & Addison’s nicknames – “He-Shepher” and “She-Shepherd”  Too funny!!!

Exclusive Interview with Jason Dohring of Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars fans…are you ready?  I said…are you ready?  It’s finally here!!  My long awaited interview with the one and only Jason Dohring.  As a huge Veronica Mars (and Logan Echolls) fan, this was a blast.  What was supposed to be an email Q&A turned into one of the best hours of my life.  Me…chatting it up with Jason Dohring?!

A special thank you goes out to Jason for talking to me…on his day off none the less.  He was really easy to talk to, sweet and funny.  There’s a level of excitement in his voice when he talks about the show, and Logan that was just really cool.

As for me…well, I was a bundle of nerves.  This was my first phone interview, and it just happened to be with one of my favorite TV stars.  So bear with me.  The interview is long, and probably could be edited down, but I wanted to share everything I could with all of you.

Give Me My Remote: So I before we get started, I wanted to take a minute to thank you. I was one of the Bloggers that came out to the set for the Veronica Mars Bloggers Press Day.  It was a great day, so thank you so much for taking the time to meet with us.

Jason Dohring: Yeah, it was so cool that you guys came out.  It was so great.  I was bummed I wasn’t able to get there until the very end, but I was glad I got a chance to talk to everyone.

GMMR:  Well you were the last surprise of the day, so it was quite a thrill.  You know, since the moment I first mentioned on my site that you were going to be answering questions for us, the response has been crazy.  You have a lot of fans out there.

JD: Oh that’s fantastic.  I love to hear that.  Dude, it’s so cool to know that so many people are interested in the show because it means so much to me and my life, that it’s so good to meet others who are so into it.  That is so cool.  Thank you.

GMMR: The critics really love the show, but we need to get more eyeballs in front of those TVs on Wednesday nights.  Can’t they just move Lost already?

JD: Ha ha…that would be nice.  I think it will be good though when the CW thing happens.  I think that will be really good for our show.  With launching a new network, it will give our show quite a bit of visibility, and they’re talking about putting us behind Gilmore Girls or something like that which would be very good.

GMMR: Yeah, that would be a great match, as both shows have such a similar fan base.

JD: Totally.  You know it’s funny because when I first started on the show, I never really knew anyone watched it, so it’s great to see all these fans that really follow it.  Ya know, it means a lot, because when we’re on set it’s not like we see any fans or anything, so you almost forget that 2-3 million people are actually watching it.

GMMR: So do you have any idea when you might hear about a Seasons 3 pickup and your move to the CW?

JD: You know what, I don’t know.  Well the season will start in September so I guess we’ll know before then…ha ha.  I’ve heard all these press reports and they all seem to mention our show, so that’s good, right?

GMMR: So I have a few questions about our dear Logan.  Over the past year he’s lost his mother to suicide, found out his father allegedly killed his girlfriend, got dumped by Veronica, he was accused of murder, and now his best friend Duncan takes off.  How’s Logan doing?  How do you think he’s handling all of this?

JD:  You know, it’s almost f’ing unfathomable to think of what that would really be like.  I don’t know anyone that has had that bad of a life.  Anyone one of those things could ruin a person’s life.  I don’t know, I just hope that there are points of pleasantness that can keep him sticking around.  And that really begins with Veronica, and her kindness.

I think what’s funny is that he always gets what’s coming to him.  Like a terrible thing happens to him, but he’s like that to other people.  So it’s like in real life…what goes around comes around. He treats people like shit and then wonders why that stuff is done to him, you know what I mean?

GMMR: Yeah, it’s a bit of karma as they say

JD:  Yeah, that’s exactly right.  But it’s kind of lost on him at this point.

GMMR:  Whether he’s being snarky with Veronica, or a hard nosed brat with those is a position of authority, there is always a certain vulnerability to Logan, isn’t there?

JD: Yeah, I was just talking to a friend about this over lunch.  It’s funny because I think he really has an idea of what’s fair, what’s right, what’s wrong, but what he does with that, I don’t know, I just don’t think takes enough responsibility.  The thing with Logan is, he understands humanity, and the kindness of people, and although he doesn’t always react to it in the right way, he definitely sees it in every situation.

As an actor, the more I learn about people, and really start looking at life, the more I grow as an artist.  If you are aware of that in what you do, I think it all comes through in the character.

GMMR: One thing we love about Logan is that he never really holds back.  Is that something that’s written on the page, or something you bring to him as an actor?

JD: At the beginning, when Logan was really hard and nasty, I would get a note saying things like “Have fun” and try to lighten it up or whatever. But I think in the first half of season 2, he’s had more of a nastiness to him.  As the character if you see things in through a tone of hate, then everything around you seems very hostile.  You end up lashing out at everything, which I know is not always the most charming trait in the character, but you got to just have fun with it, and hope that it brings more of a human side to it.

GMMR:  Logan is pretty unpredictable.  You really never know he’s going to react to a given situation, but I guess that’s one of my favorite things about him.

JD: Yeah, I like that too. Have you seen Murder in the First? Gary Oldham has a few scenes like that in the movie where he’s just walking around and all of a sudden he just smashes a mirror.  It’s so unexpected, but then the scene just continues and you’re like…what???  I love that stuff.  It’s just great, and I love when Logan is unpredictable like that.

One Less To Vote For On American Idol

Comments Off on One Less To Vote For On American Idol

When you pick up the phones next Wednesday night to vote for the next American Idol, you won’t have to remember the number for Melissa McGhee. In what was the most dramatic rose ceremony ever, Melissa got voted off the island but the tribal council…or something like that. Yup she’s dunzo. She knew it was coming and even admitted it to Ryan Seacrest. I think she was lucky to have one last week. I would have booted her ass last week in favor of the far more talented (and MA native) Ayla Brown. But that’s just me.

Tonight’s show proved to have a few surprises, none of which I would have predicted. First off both Ace Young and Lisa Tucker were in the bottom three with Melissa. And man, you should have seen the fear of God in Ace’s eyes. But seriously, what is wrong with the AI voters? Why is Chicken Little (aka Kevin Covais) sitting snuggly on that couch when the far more talented Ace and Lisa are fighting for dear life? Yeah, Kevin is adorable and VERY entertaining…I love watching his little pre-performance interviews, but the boy can’t sing. Wake up..it’s time for him to go.

In another far more shocking moment, Simon Cowell showed up…in get this…..a white button-down, collard shirt. I couldn’t believe it. I’m not sure I have ever seen him in anything other than the tight Hanes Her Way t-shirts. Simon you looked fantastic…stick with the new style and ditch the baby doll tees.

Oh and in case you were wondering…Chris Daughtry is still hot as all sin!!!

Comments Off on Kristin Cavallari Should Stick To Reality TV

Kristin Cavallari, the Queen of the Laguna Bitches, is guesting on tonight’s ep of Veronica Mars.  Kristin plays a closeted lesbian cheerleader who is being blackmailed by someone who wants to out her.  I just watched her very first scene, and all I have to say is sorry KCavs, but I just don’t see an Oscar in your future.

Having Kristin Cavallari and Kristen Bell share the same scene was wrong on so many levels.  Kristen Bell should never be put through that again.  Shame on you UPN for forcing Cavallari on us.  We all know she is there because the peeps at UPN thought her reality show Let’s Get This Party Started would still be on, and it would be some kind of cross promotion synergy thang.  Well her show failed and now us Veronica Mars diehards have to watch her struggle through scene after scene.  That’s not right!

Please tell me someone else noticed the way KCavs said “Veronica”…was it not just like the way she says “Ste-phen”.  Ugh, get her off my show!!!

Oh yeah, and it’s soooo weird to watch Veronica Mars tonight.  This is the first new ep since the Veronica Mars Bloggers Press Day, and I’m so geeking out right now.  I keep thinking…hey, I sat in that chair, oh look, it’s Dick…I hugged him just a few weeks ago – he’s not all that mean.  And when I first heard Jason Dohring voice…bizarre…I mean I talked to the guy last night.  On that note, let me just say that I had a sh*t day at work and wasn’t able to write up my interview with Jason.  Give me some time to relax with a little Veronica, catch up on Idol, and check out The Loop.  When I’m done, I’ll get right to the interview.  Come back tomorrow to check it out.

Congrats to Jennie Garth (90210, What I Like About You) and her husband Peter Facinelli (Six Feet Under) who just annouced that they are expecting their third child.  The new baby will join older sisters Luca Bella, 8, and Lola Ray, 3.  I hear that Uncle Dylan, Auntie Donna, and Uncle Brandon were quite excited to hear the news.  Aunt Brenda just scowled and gave Jennie a dirty look.  Some things never change.

What to Watch Tonight: Veronica Mars & The Loop

So much TV and so little time. I’m lucky to have multiple TiVos so I don’t have to ever miss any of my favorite shows, but I know some of you don’t have that luxury. Lucky for you I’m here to give you a heads up as to what you should be watching. Tonight your eyes should be tuned into Veronica Mars and The Loop.

Veronica Mars (UPN, 9pm est)
Veronica Mars is finally back tonight with a brand new episode. In tonight’s ep, “Versatile Toppings”, Veronica is on the case as someone tries to blackmail the closted gay students of Neptune High. Kristin Cavallari of Laguna Beach guest stars.

Little background on the title of tonight’s show that I picked up during my visit to the set of Veronica Mars. Versatile Toppings is actually an inside joke (although not anymore) between creator Rob Thomas and Executive Producer Dan Etheridge. Dan had used the phrase ‘neogitable top’ but for some reason Rob kept using the phrase ‘versatile top’. As this ep developed and Rob realized that the story would involve both the gay students of Neptune High and pizza delivery guys Versatile Toppings just seem to fit.

Check out a few pics from tonight’s episode (Photos courtest of UPN/Warner Bros)

Veronica Mars: Kristen Bell & Kristin Cavallari K Bell & K Cavs K Bell & K Cavs 2

I’m hoping to fill your day with more Veronica Mars goodies in anticpation of a fresh new ep. And if my “real job” cooperates I will be able to bring you the long awaited interview with Jason Dohring (Logan Echolls). I talked to Jason last night, and yes, you should be extremely jealous. He was so cool and easy to talk to, which was nice since I was a bundle of nerves waiting for my phone to ring. The interview went great so make sure you check back later for more on my conversation with Jason.

The Loop (Fox, 9:30pm est)

Speaking of conversations with hot men, I also chatted it up last night with Bret Harrison, star of the new Fox comedy The Loop. Like Jason, Bret was really funny and very cool to talk with. We talked about his new show, his upcoming movie projects, touring with his band, and his famous ex-roommate who will be guesting on his new show. I’ll do my very best to recap my call with Bret today too.

What you need to know is that The Loop premieres tonight at 9:30pm on Fox. It’s on right after American Idol, so if you’re already on that station then you should just stay there. And don’t worry about this new show going up against Veronica Mars and Lost, starting on March 16th, the show will be moving to Thursday nights between That 70’s Show and The OC. I’ve seen a bit of the premiere episode and it looks pretty damn funny. I’m looking forward to it.

Oh and in case you’re wondering…Lost is a repeat tonight, so that’s one less show you have to worry about watchin.

I was less than enthusaed during the first half hour of American Idol. I figured a night of Stevie Wonder songs was going to be crazy good, but the show started off slow. As Simon said (left arm up…sorry), but as he said it was like we were watching two different shows. There were some truly amazing performances tonight, most notably from Katherine McPhee, Paris Bennett, Taylor Hicks and my favorite Idol-wannabe, Chris Daughtry. I’ve already watched Chris’s performance of “Higher Ground” twice..is was that good.I’m with the Vegas oddmakers on this one. I think my boy Chris is going to take it all. What did you think of tonight’s performances? I love to hear how others interpreted the same show.

And as always, the best place to talk all things Idols is over with our friends at Idol Chatter.

Supersize The Office

Credit: NBC

I know I’ve been pushing the Supersize the Office campaign on you all lately, but we still need your help. It’s getting closer to the finale and I can only assume that NBC is going to make their decision soon. If you’ve already left your support, please pass the link on to your family and friends.

And if for no other reason, maybe The Office will be Supersized and John Krasinski will personally call me to thank me for the support…and then we will become friends…and hang out all the time when he is home in Boston. Yeah, it’s nice to visit my fantasty world sometimes, isn’t it? On that note, if I ever had the chance to meet J. Kras, I would probably not be able to speak to him due to my complete embarrasment over being such a girly-girl Krasinski fan.

Issac Hayes Quits South Park

March 13, 2006 by

Isaac Hayes, best known for his role as Shaft, and most recently as Chef on South Park is demanding to be released from his South Park contract because of “what he feels are inappropriate ridiculte of religious communities” by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.  The devout Scientologist, issued the following statement:

“There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins. Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices.”

Co-creator Trey Parker offered the following in reponse to Hayes’s statement.

“This has nothing to do with intolerance and bigotry and everything to do with the fact that Isaac Hayes is a Scientologist and that we recently featured Scientology in an episode of ‘South Park.’ In 10 years and over 150 episodes of ‘South Park,’ Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons and Jews. He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show. To bring the civil rights struggle into this is just a non-sequitur. Of course we will release him from his contract and we wish him well.”

What does this all mean to us?  No more chocolate salty balls.  Bye Chef.
