The Season Finale of The Office…I’m Going to Miss You Dunder Mifflinites
May 11, 2006 by Kath Skerry
It’s just past midnight, and so it’s officially Thursday, May 11th. The day I have been dreading above all others for quite some time now. Tonight, is the season finale of The Office. After tonight, we are going to have to wait months for a new episode. Wait…a need a moment. Ok, thanks. I’m going to miss this show so much when it goes on hiatus. Without The Office to look forward to on Thursday nights, I’m not sure what I’ll do. I guess I’ll take up drinking again to pass the time.
What started out as a funny little knock off of the brilliant BBC version of the same name has quickly become the comedy nearest and dearest to my heart. I’m an Office evengelist. Sometimes I feel like a one stop PR shop for this show. I can’t pinpoint exactly when my obsession turned the corner, but I think it was probably around the same time Krasinski & Carell belted out Islands in the Stream..karaoke style. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been a fan of the show since the beginning, but I think it was “Email Surveillance” that really kicked my adoration into full gear. Now there’s no turning back, I’m hooked.
The Office is special to me for another reason. I started this little site back in November, and it was mid-December when Jenna Fischer agreed to answer some questions for Give Me My Remote. Jenna in turn involved John, and my very first celebrity interview launched in January. Being that I was such a fan of the show, and especially the Jam storyline, I was beyond thrilled at the opportunity to have a direct connection to these actors. It was such a thrill.
And speaking of a direct connection, a special thanks to the cast members who make themselves available to the fans through their MySpace pages. The thrill of checking my inbox and seeing an email from Angela Kinsey (Angela), BJ Novak (Ryan) or maybe my boy Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) was incalculcable. I think that the actors accessibility to their fans has had a major impact on the growth and popularity of The Office.
This brings us to tomorrow night. The season finale. The supersized season finale. We got what we asked for…a few more minutes with our favorite Dunder Mifflinites before they leave us for the summer. I’m proud of our little petition. I remember reading Maureen Ryan’s interview with Greg Daniels when he first mentioned he needed more time for the finale. My mind immediately thought of an online petition. I quickly emailed James from Northern Attack, but thought for sure he would laugh in my face. But no, he was on board, and before I knew it, the petition was launched. A few short weeks later, thousands of fans had lent their voice to the campaign, and our supersized finale was granted. Yeah, NBC probably would have done it anyway, but I always thought that at the end of the day, the Supersized Office petition was more about showing NBC, and those involved with The Office how much their fans appreciated them. And it was nice that the petition was recognized not only by those in the press, but also the cast and crew of The Office.
So what can we expect in the extra 10 minutes NBC has graciously donated? I, of course, hope it’s some really satisfying scenes between Pam and Jim. We’ve waited two seasons for these two to acknowledge their feelings for each other and do something about it. I’m hoping we get at least a little of that tomorrow night. It’s Casino Night so anything can happen. Maybe Jim can win her in a bet from Roy.. ha ha. But with Jim’s impending transfer to the Stamford office, maybe it’s Pam that realizes that she can’t let Jim leave her. It could play out a little like this.
Pam: Wait, what…you’re leaving Scranton?
Jim: Well yeah. I’ve been here for a few years and I think I could use the change. There’s nothing here for me anyway, so why not.
Pam: You’ve got me. I’m here.
Jim: No Pam, I don’t have you. Roy has you.
Pam: No Jim, you have me.
They smile, embrace, aaaaaaaand scene.
See how simple it is to make me happy Greg Daniels. Whatever the finale holds in store for our little paper company, I know it’s guaranteed to make me laugh out loud. But I just don’t understand why you have to go on hiatus. Just keep churning out new eps week after week with no break whatsoever. Now that I could deal with.
Keep checking back throughout the day for more Office news and gossip. Oh and the Office-ianados support group starts in the GMMR forums directly after the show. It’s going to be a long summer.
