American Idol Final Performance Recap

May 23, 2006 by

So as I said before, I was an idiot and somehow managed to convince myself that we would find out tonight was was winning American Idol. You would think someone that runs a freakin’ TV blog might be up to speed on the most popoular show on TV. But tonight is all about the finale performances and YOUR VOTE!!!

In case you missed it, I took some notes during the show and I thought I would pass them along.

But first up, our first Chris Daughtry appearance. Damn, he looks good, even if he is holding his wife’s hand. Hold it tight woman, because who knows how long that boy is going to be sticking around.

Katharine McPhee starts the show off with an old favorite, and my new favorite song, “Blackhorse and a Cherrytree”. I’ve fallen in love with this song since Kat’s first performance. She’s off to a decent start, and I’m so glad that she’s not writhing around on the floor this time (although I know some who wouldn’t mind seeing that at all). I think her performance of this song was better the first time around. She was more sexy and sultry (again I am just talking about her voice) last time. Randy disagrees and thinks tonight’s rendition was better. She didn’t blow away the judges like she should be at this stage. Both Paula and Simon were complimentary but definitely not overwhelmed.

Taylor and Katharine both better step it up tonight.

If you want to vote for Katharine, here are her numbers:

Taylor Hicks is back with “Living in the City”, a perfect song choice for him. Aw, all the old Idols are back, and they love Tay Tay. I’m not sure about choice of jackets. The bright purple. velvet jacket seems a little off, but seriously we don’t love Taylor his clothes now do we? God, this guy is a blast to watch. He rocks the sh*t out of this song. And the judges seem to agree. Paula is definitely on crack, but she’s kind of coherent and fun, so it’s all good. Simon hated his jacket but loved his performance.

According to my assessment, Round 1 goes to Taylor Hicks (Simon agrees with me, per usual).

If you want to vote for Taylor, here are his numbers:

1-866-IDOLS-02
1-866-IDOLS-04
1-866-IDOLS-06

On to Round 2….

Kat’s back with her “moment” song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, and damn, the girl is on the ground again. I personally think she could have changed it up a bit, and yes, I know sound very Taylor biased, but I do feel like I am being honest. OH, come on…that same “heard” word I hated last time, I hated again, watch your annuciation and vowels girl. Again, her first performance of this song was better, but she still rocked it out. Maybe I didn’t get chills (or cry like Papa McPhee), but it was still fabulous. The judges agree, and I think Simon said this was her best performance, but he may have been talking about her first performance of this song. I don’t know…Paula just gave me a sip of her drink, and I’m feeling a bit funny in my head,

Taylor’s back with “Levon” by Elton John. I think I’m going with Taylor’s first performance of this song, althought he’s doing a great job. I remember the first go at it having a bit more of Taylor’s signature energy. Randy dug it dawg, but thought it was a little pitchy (someone buy this man a freakin’ thesaurus already…for the love of Pete)! But wait…this performance garners the best comment from Paula this whole seasons. Ready?

“What may be pitchy to you is the essence of who Taylor is.”

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! She is such a god damn idiot. Someone get her to the meth lab…STAT!!! God, I didn’t even finish writing this and Simon already told Paula that she isnt’ making any sense. Classic Idol right there.

Round 2 goes to Katharine McPhee

Let’s take a quick break to talk about the celebs in the Idol audience tonight. As I mentioned, Daughtry is back in full effect. But so are the other Idols. I’m sure at the very least the Top 10 were there, as they are in town practicing for some cheesy performances that we will be forced to watch tomorrow night. I got a glimpse of Paris Bennett, Elliott Yamin, Melissa, ummm, Melissa…yeah, I don’t remember her name but she’s really not that important anyway, Ace Young (or was this his brother?) and Kellie Pickler. Dude, Kellie’s new haircut is a hair don’t. I know someone famous cut it for a segment on Regis and Kelly, but it looks awful.

Other celebrity sightings include…

Mandy Moore, who is currently shooting License to Wed with John Krasinski. And yes, the moment I saw her my eyes scanned the crowd for J. Kras. Something tells me this isn’t his cup of tea.

Ben Stiller was shown towards the top of the show. He was ooking like he would rather die than be seen at the American Idol finale, cowering behind people and everything. Awesome.

Christina Applegate was there. Is she on a new Fox show or something? Maybe she’s just a fan of Idol. Kind of random though.

Taye Diggs….wow, Daughtry might not be the hottest guy in the house afterall. My Taye was in the audience and looking fine as usual. I wouldn’t mind if he got on stage and sang a little something tonight.

Fresh from her honeymoon, Tori Spelling was in attendence this evening. Don’t you think that the 90210-ers (minus Shannen) can get anything they want from the Fox execs? Seriously, 90210 is the only reason Fox exists today. Oh, and did you hear the rumors that Tori is already preggers. Things move a lot quicker during the 2nd marriage.

All right, we are back with the final judged performances of the 2006 American Idol season.

“My Destiny” will be Katharine’s first single if she wins it all tomorrow night. It’s a very Idol-esque song that I’m sure I will get used to hearing about 100 times a day on the radio if Katharine wins. I’m not sure why this song was written for Katharine, because it’s a little too low for her, and she’s off key on the low notes. I hope Taylor doesn’t have to sing this one, because it doesn’t suit him at all. Kat’s performance was a bit boring for me, and she didn’t knock it out of the park. At times she pushed way too hard. Maybe it was the nerves mixed with the stress, and a touch of a tired voice. Sorry Kat but when you are joined on stage by a gospel choir I want a Clay Aiken “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” moment, and you just didn’t deliver. The judges agreed, and I thought we were going to get a ‘thanks for showing up’ from Simon, but he stopped short, and just told Kat’s fans to remember her 2nd performance of the night.

“Do I Make you Proud” is Taylor’s first single when, oh, if he wins. I’m so glad they get different songs this year. Dude, who is writing these songs, and are they even considering the singer, because much like Kat’s opening verse, this is just too low for Taylor’s voice. Difference is, Taylor opens it up and kicks a little ass with the rest of the song. That was a great song for him, and he was awesome. No question about it…Taylor you make me proud. I got money on Simon saying that this performance might have just won Taylor the competition? Oh hot damn…he said it!!! He said it!!! Ok, his exact words were: “Assuming that the show was tied, then you just won American Idol”.

OK…listen, if you love Taylor you HAVE to vote, because the McPheevers are going to be out in full force tonight, especially after Simon’s declaration.

Whether you vote for Katharine or Taylor, the most important thing is that you VOTE. So stop reading GMMR and get on the phone. Oh wait, continue reading GMMR, but grab your cordless phone, and your cell phone and start dialing.

Tomorrow night…the 2 hour American Idol Season Finale.

GMMR..out!!

[…] Last nights American Idol Recap where Katharine McPhee decided to not get naked, again. What a prude. I missed the show because I was dancing on the bar at Circa 1922 in Wilmington,NC. Anyone who is in Wilmington keep a eye for me. I’ll put all my drinks on your tab. Mr. Underhill found out about that shit at the country club so I’m out of luck. See y’all! […]
