Project Runway is Back…Work it Girl
July 13, 2006 by Kath Skerry
The following contains spoilers for last night’s Project Runway. Read at your own risk.
The third season of Project Runway has officially begun. As always, we are introduced to each of the designers as they arrive and move into Atlas New York, where they will be living for the remainder of the show. The little vignettes give us a brief look at who each designer is and let’s face it, the most important factor – the attitude they bring along in their swanky Louis Vuitton bags.
45 seconds into the show and I already know who I am ready to boot off the catwalk. Malan Breton is a pompous jackass whose fake accent seems to change with the wind. He’s so creepy looking I may have nightmares about him. I don’t buy that his name is even Malan. From here on out, he’s going to be known as Creepy Faux Malan. Done and done.
The contestants are invited to the roofdeck to join Heidi and Tim in a little champagne toast to usher in the new season. The designers don’t even get a chance to catch a buzz before they are given their first challenge. They are told they have to make an outfit that best describes their fashion point of view – but, they can only use materials found in their apartments. They have 15 minutes to go downstairs and gather anything and everything they would need to make their outfit.
Armed with scissors and a laundry bag the designers are off. Mere minutes later the apartments are toe up. The obvious items like curtains, bed sheets, and shower curtains are the first to go. But then chaisse lounges are being ripped apart, shades are being taken off lamps, sconces are being pulled from the walls. Nothing was sacred, and everythin was gone. Faux Malan thought the processed was “undignifed.” Oh shut it Faux…I will kill you.
The designers have 8 hours to pull off their creations. The egos come out to play and the drama begins. Before you know it Tim Gunn is there with a a few “hmmms”, “I don’t see where you’re going with that”, and his signature “make it work”. Man, how I’ve missed “make it work”. The models are soon in hair and makeup and the runway action begins.
Celebrity judge, Kate Spade, joins Michael, Nina and Heidi on the panel. Most of the designs looks like curtains and bed sheets…oh wait. But really, some are done so much better than others. As always there is a winner and a loser.
Winning the first Project Runway 3 Designers Challenge is….KEITH. And going home this week is STACEY.
I’m so glad Project Runway is back, and that this year’s designers are just as obnoxious as in year’s past. I think I miss Santino. Oh God, can I take that back?!

Just thought I would share that I had WEIRD, f’ed up dream with the cast of Project Runwat 3 last night. I don’t remember the specifics, but it work me up and I could not fall back to sleep.
That elimination made me mad. The dress was simply a bed sheet or whatever. That’s just fabric. Others were much more creative, such as Laura or Robert Best. And I think that Vincent should have been booted. And that Malan, he is completely scary. You know, I’m kind of surprised Daniel Franco didn’t come back. He freaked me out too, but Keith, Malan, so many this season are so much more weird.
I love your website. I check it many times a day. Anndd, you have my favorite shows, The Office and Project Runway. Everything I could ever need. Thanks a bunch for the fabulous website.
I was just searching the web when I ran across this and I saw a familiar name on it so I thought I should take a peek. Malan isn’t pompous, I’ve spoken with him, he may come off as being that way, but he isn’t. He’s a real doll. And his accent IS real. He’s moved so many times, to so many places that it doesn’t sound so natural. It’s been influanced from where he’s been. But he is sweet. so give him a chance.
Best wishes.
