“The Office” Thursdays on Give Me My Remote

September 14, 2006 by

With one week before the season premiere of The Office, I had big plans for today’s weekly installment of “The Office” Thursday. Unfortunately, my clients at my “real” job had other plans for me today.

I’m going to keep adding to this post throughout the remainder of the day, so make sure you keep checking back, because there more Office gossip is coming including my thoughts on the S2 DVDs and some special Office-related appearances & events we can expect next week.

Jim and Pam, The OfficeCasino Night – Supersized Edition
Don’t forget that tonight’s broadcast of “Casino Night” is the supersized edition. Make sure to set your TiVo’s to start at 9:20pm, and if I were you, I would extend the recording until a little past 10pm. I’m personally holding out for a new promo. Fingers crossed.

GMMR Tackles The Office Season 2 DVD
Last Tuesday was like Christmas for diehard Office fans. The arrival of the Season 2 DVDs allowed us to take a brief, but albeit necessary break from speculating on the state of Jim & Pam’s relationship and let us focus on NEW goodies from our favorite show. And man, did these DVDs deliver!!! The 4-disc set is JAM (I couldn’t resist) packed with deleted scenes, commentaries, PSAs, the webisodes, a fab blooper reel…yeah, just about everything an Office-addict could need.

I’m going to try to refrain from spoiling too much from the DVD because I know that not all of you have had the time to sit down and watch all 8 hours. But for those of you have seen the deleted scenes, I have 2 words for you – “the toast”. Ok, I know I am guilty of gushing over Krasinski’s adorkableness from time to time (and by that I mean any chance I get), but let’s not forget that behind the messy hair and lankiness is one hell of an actor. This is not news to me at all, I’ve always thought John portrayed Jim with sincerity, but some of his deleted scenes were just amazing.

Unlike most DVD deleted scenes, the scenes cut from The Office would have and should have appeared in their respective episodes. They were cut for time, not content. What I would give for a “director’s cut” where all these scenes could play out as they were intended – it would be ridiculously funny.

The commentaries for me were the best part of the DVDs. I think when you love a show as much as I love The Office, you want to know anything and everything you can. The commentaries gave the viewers an incredible insight as to what was happening while the episode was being filmed, and at the same time showed the genuine friendships that have developed between the cast and the crew of the show.

Some of the commentaries were a bit of let down, but only because I think there were too many people in the room trying to get their two cents in. The cast/crew would sometimes go off on a tangent and miss the opportunity to comment on a significant scene. I found myself yelling at the screen and begging people to STOP talking so I could hear about the ep. I mean, Rainn and Randall (the DP) were talking about camera equiptment as Jim was professing his love to Pam during “Casino Night”. Thank God Jenna interejected…it would have been such a bummer had she not. Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski were by far the best commentators and really let the fans into minds of Jim & Jam relationship. I think now more than ever I think that the audience has come to love Jim & Pam because of the level of respect that John and Jenna have for eachother and their characters.

I tore open my DVDs and watched all the deleted scenes, and the commentaries in one setting. I felt physically ill from staring at my laptop for all those hours, but it was well worth it. I’ve actually gone back and watched a few of the deleted scenes all over again…they were THAT good.

Goodnight & Goodbye

Sorry for the rather boring edition of “The Office Thursday”. Just think of it as the calm before the storm. And the storm being my wrath is Pam is married to Roy when the show returns next Thursday night. Holy sh#t…NEXT THURSDAY NIGHT!! Hot damn!! Hope to see you all a bit later in The Office chat!!!

  2. Jessica on September 14th, 2006 6:18 pm

    hmm…indeed.

I got really worried earlier when I checked the site and didn’t see anything about Office Thursday. it’s horrible when “real” work gets in the way of television viewing and discussion, isn’t it?

Where’s Jim? I would love if he went to the paper convention with Michael and Dwigt. Is he in Scranton???? ARGH. ONE WEEK! I can’t do it! I can’t wait!

“The third-season opener is set in the wake of casino night”

But in US Weekly it states ‘the premiere picks up three months postsmooch’? Or is it just bad writing and they mean the show is starting three months after the season finale, which in itself is just obvious and stupid.

“What I would give for a “director’s cut” where all these scenes could play out as they were intended – it would be ridiculously funny.”

You know, it occurs to me that if someone had a talent for video editing they could splice together a director’s cut. But I guess NBC would yank it from YouTube as soon as it posted so it’s not like they could ever share it.

Alas, I’m one of the work-cursed among us who has barely watched 5% of my long-coveted S3 DVD set. It’s killing me because I have to avoid so much spoiler chat.

I absolutely agree with your take on the dvd commentaries! There were times when, like you, I was sooo mad that they weren’t talking about what was happening in pivotal scenes. I hate to say it, but I think they should have limited the number of cast/crew members doing commentary, and made a huge effort to coordinate schedules so leads like John and Steve could have been there for them.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes to everything you have to say on the DVDs. (And in general.) I’ve watched all of the deleted scenes at least twice. I was absolutely blown away by some of them. There are so many threads in those which I would have LOVED to have had included in the episodes. In particular, I love the thread of the friendship between Jim and Toby (because we all already love Jim, and who doesn’t love Toby?). And then there were THOSE deleted scenes. I still haven’t recovered from those. Or watched those nearly enough.

I totally agree with everything especially about “the toast” and that part about Rainn and the DP talking about cameras during the “I’m in love with you” scene. I’m pretty sure I yelled at my TV as well. All I have to say is that this DVD is pretty much the greatest thing ever!

LUCY – The season premiere picks up 3 months after “Casino Night”…so about Sept

Like you, I watched all the deleted scenes and commentaries in one gluttonous sitting… and then rewatched “the toast” over and over. Also, Jim’s “best and worst first date”.. how painful was that to watch! I was surprised to hear Brenda’s name pop up in the deleted scene from Jim and Pam’s jinx… it’s all too good.

Yet another great chat last night. Next week is going to be alot more fun though, but, I don’t know if I can stand the anticipation much longer LOL.

I may have to change my name though for next week. I like the new nickname you gave me haha.

    Jim Mosby…I love it!!!

my severance package came! I’m so excited! now if you’ll excuse me, I have many, many hours of Office deliciousness to attend to.

I’ve had so much homework, that I didn’t get to do the buddy tv chat. I was disappointed. I watched the last few minutes to see if there would be a promo at the end with new clips, and there wasn’t, which was a bummer. But only 6 days!

I agree about the commentaries. I thought there were too many in some of them. Sometimes it seemed like there were two conversations happening at once. Its still interesting stuff though.

  15. Rayne on September 15th, 2006 7:02 pm

Sweet! I was just now emailed my Buddytv reminder for last night’s session. haha

  16. Kris on September 17th, 2006 6:57 pm

I agree about the commentary (and your whole post on the dvd). What hurt me most was that they didn’t schedule the commentary at a time that John and Steve could take part (i agree w/ Rebecca). It would have been so nice to hear from them on most of them, though i’m happy w/ the actors who were on the commentary. I think that’s why i loved the S1 commentary so much.

And “the toast”. Dang. That’s all i have to say about that. Dang. That John…..sure can act.

Oh, and i’m glad someone mentioned the Brenda/Jinx bit from Drug Testing’s deleted scenes! I thought that was a great scene! Also, the scene from Performance Review when Dwight is making his sign and Jim shows Dwight his sign (“Jim. Is Jim. My name is Jim.”). Ok, i’ll stop.
