Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter Dead at 44

So sad to have to share this news with everyone. It really is a tragedy as Steve Irwin was not on a husband and father of two young children, but also a strong environmentalist.
Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia’s north coast.
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin’s death and said his family had been notified. Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.
Irwin became a popular figure on Australian and international television through Irwin’s close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture and relocation of crocodiles.
Irwin’s enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following. He was known for his exuberance and use of the catchphrase “Crikey!”
But his image suffered a setback in January 2004 when he held his then one-month-old baby Bob while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed his sorry Monday and said that he was fond of Irwin and was very appreciative of all the work he had done in promoting Australia overseas.
In 2003, Irwin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s Australian Story television program about how he was perceived in his home country.
“When I see what’s happened all over the world, they’re looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke,” he said, the ABC reported.
“And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing. “You know, there’s this… they kind of cringe, you know, ’cause I’m coming out with ‘Crikey’ and ‘Look at this beauty’.”

What Happened to McVet’s Head?

Why is it that every man Meredith Grey sleeps feels the urge to cut off his hair? We all thought George O’Malley’s haircut was bad but it’s nothing compared to what McVet did? Check out these new pics of Chris O’Donnell taken this week. I’m not saying these pics are spoilers, but do we really think that bald head would be appearing on Grey’s Anatomy? Hmmm.
2006 MTV Video Music Awards Redux

I watched only about 6 minutes of last night’s MTV Video Music Awards before I had to run screaming from my TV. I just couldn’t stomach it. I remember back in the day when the VMAs and the MTV Movie Awards were something to look forward to. Now they seem so boring and trite.
Just because I didn’t watch it, doesn’t mean that you can’t read about it here. Our friends over at TV with MeeVee filled me in on what went down in NYC last night. And remember my friend Kelly? She was the one who got to meet McDreamy and Wentworth Miller at the TV upfronts…well, she was at the VMAs last night, so if I can get any scoop from her, I’ll be sure to pass it along.
On to the recap….
Viewers of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards may still be scraping their jaws up off their respective floors. This year’s event was a mishmash of oddities, outbursts, and underdogs. Almost every Moonman landed in the hands of an unexpected winner, and all of the performances were a little, well, strange. Let’s try and break it down, shall we?
eveeJustin Timberlake kicked-off this year’s wild ride, and I can’t believe I’m about to write this, but he was the highlight. Home boy can dance, yo! From there, things just got weirder. Jack Black was the host, and pushed his usual over-the-top, awkward caveats and filler. Nothing about his performance felt funny or natural. Beyonce’s performance absolutely blew, full of breathlessness, gyrations, and oddities. OK Go! performed their hit on a myriad of treadmills. I think I lost five pounds just watching them bounce and run around. Many of the introductions by great acts like LL Cool J and Jared Leto from 30 Seconds To Mars were forced and painful to watch. This year’s show suffered from a lack of rhythm, over-production (there ought to be a law against that many screens displaying the SAME cheesy graphics), and bad writing. Yet the VMA’s certainly weren’t a total loss–the winners can attest to that. So who took home the Moonmen?
Panic at the Disco! landed top honors with the video of the year award, and they also had the dubious honor of being the best band of the eve. Not only were they fully clothed, so were their dancing female companions–it was rather shocking to watch. Well played, boys, and congrats on the win.
Other highlights included:
Best Male Video – James Blunt, “Beautiful”
Best Hip Hop Video – The Black Eyed Peas, “My Humps”
Best Female Video – Kelly Clarkson, “Because of You”
Dance Video – The Pussycat Dolls, “Buttons”
Best Pop Video – Pink, “Stupid Girls”
Best Rap Video – Chamillionaire, “Ridin’”
Best Group Video – All American Rejects, “Move Along”
Best New Artist – Avenged Sevenfold, “Bat Country”
Beyonce managed to score an R&B honor, and AFI took the rock category. The legendary Hype Williams was also highlighted with an achievement award for his videos, termed films by a very passionate (surprise, surprise) Kanye West. All in all, the event just felt forced, over-produced, and super-strange. While it’s cool to see so many newcomers landing coveted awards, it’s clear this year was all about the flash and bling, and not in the least bit about substance. Just the very notion of MTV handing out awards is a strange concept these days, as the majority of their programming has nothing to do with music or videos, but still, the Moonmen must live on. That said, it’d be nice to see more attention to music and less attention to flashy props and silly banter next year.
OK, that’s clearly crazy talk. If they can just give Jared Leto a tad more air time, I’ll be happy.

Office Emmy Love

Here’s the deal…the majority of GMMR readers are HUGE fans of The Office. Why do you think I talk about it so much? Whenever I post something about the show, I get a crazy response from you. And the cast of The Office has been SO AMAZING in their support of GiveMeMyRemote.com, I can’t begin to thank them enough. So I thought I would let you in on a little something that took place last week.
A good luck Emmy cake was delivered to the set of The Office the week before the Emmys as a way to say Thank You to the cast and crew of our favorite show. GiveMeMyRemote.com, OfficeTally.com, NorthernAttack.com along with super Office fan Wendy sent the delicious dessert on behalf of all the fans of the show. The cake was a hit on the set. Jenna Fischer wrote me and said:
“Thank you guys SO MUCH for the cake. It was perfectly timed and VERY delicious. It was seriously one the best cakes I’ve ever eaten. The cast and crew enjoyed it very much. Angela took a picture. It turned out really cute.”
You would not believe the effort it takes to pull off something like a simple cake delivery. Special thanks to Wendy for EVERYTHING she did to make this happen. Thanks also goes out the David Denman, Jenna Fischer, and Executive Producer Kent Zbornak for helping us to get this done. And finally, to Susan Sarich from Susie Cakes, the amazing bakery in Brentwood, CA for making this happen for us. If you live in the area, PLEASE make sure you head in there and try her famous cupcakes.
A Blogger Does the Emmys

So what’s it like to be a blogger right in the middle of ALL the Emmy action? Well I can’t say I know first hand although I got a little taste last Friday night. But preppypunk, a blogger friend over at TV with MeeVee couldn’t have been more in on the action. Settle in as I babble on about my LA celeb sightings, as well as some of preppypunks’s adventures.
First, I guess I should first tell you that I was lucky enough to be on the red carpet for the Outstanding Perfomers Nominee Event on Friday night in LA. Basically, it’s when all the actors up for Best Acting nods get presented with their official certificates from the Academy. It was really hard to get pictures (but check out the few we got), and although we tried to capture some video, we ran into some technical difficulties. But I got to meet some really cool people.
Let me just explain the setting….see we were at the very end of the press line, and right next to the door to head into the event. What this really means is that no one was really interested in talking to us. They just wanted to get inside. But, we used the “we represent the bloggers” line, and that seemed to really make a difference. I mean the stars didn’t want to blow off their fans, right?! Right. Here’s a few highlights from the evening..
Denis Leary – Probably one of the best moments of the night for me personally. Denis Leary had just finished walking the press line, and walked past us. He wasn’t being rude or anything, his publicist was just trying to usher him inside. Just as he walked by, I remember my mama’s sage advice “Use what you got girl”, and in this case I had the Boston connection.
Just as he was past us I yelled….“Hey Denis, I’m from Malden” (the town I grew up in just outside of Boston). I saw Denis stop and turn to his wife and say, “Did she just say she was from Malden?” Yup I did. Holla!! Denis and his wife walked over and said “No, kidding. We are from Marshfield”. Then Denis uttered the classic line “What the hell is a girl from Malden doing on the red carpet”. Awesome!! We shared a laugh, which gave me the opportunity to ask him about Rescue Me. He said that he really wasn’t worried about offending anyone with the show, because his whole career was based on pushing the limit and offending people. Plus, by the time the stories are shot, there have been enough discussions that everyone involved feels confident in their choices.
We talked briefly about the Red Sox, and I told him how hard I laughed when he took over the Red Sox booth and started on his whole Mel Gibson tirade. He laughed and said he caught some heat. But it was really funny.
Will Arnett – Yeah, I love him. He’s so freakin’ funny…and tall. We missed him the first time on the red carpet, but we were lucky enough to talk to him when he came back outside a while later. He talked about how he loved the fan support of Arrested Development. And when asked about his current favorite shows, he mentioned my favorite show The Office. He rattled off a a few others, and then I quietly whispered to him “Don’t forget about SNL”. He laughed and said, “Yeah, you are so right. I do love SNL…ha ha thanks for that one.” You’re so welcome, Gob…you are so very welcome.
We met a ton of other stars too. Jane Kaczmarek (who has a new show, Help Me Help You – which I plan on watching this weekend) never misses The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. Allison Janney is going to miss The West Wing, but she was very proud of the final season. And let me say, that woman is tall and so beautiful. We chatted with her husband for a bit and he couldn’t have been nicer.
Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showed what a class act they are. They both were very nice and extremly gracious. Mariska spoke of her mother (Jayne Mansfield) and her new baby boy at home. Chris told us he loved, loved The Soporanos.
Jon Cryer, of Two and a Half Men fame….who will ALWAYS be Ducky Dale to me, was really cool and funny. He was the one person I thought I would like to grab a beer with 🙂 But sadly he’s a star and I’m a blogger so that’s not happening anytime soon.
Other stars spotted at the event were Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy), Emmy Award winners for Outstanding Guest Actor Christian Clemenson (Boston Legal) & Cloris Leachman, Alfre Woodard (Desperate Housewives), Blythe Danner (Huff), and we did see Megan Mullally from a distance, but she showed up after the red carpet had commenced…probably on purpose.
So yeah, that’s how I spent last Friday night. Working the red carpet was completely surreal, and a little scary. But I really have to thank MeeVee.com for inviting me along. It was an experience I won’t soon forget. Check out TV with MeeVee’s post about the event.
Oh and before I send you over to MeeVee for the rest of the Emmy scoop, I will say that I had two more quick star (or semi star sightings). I was staying at the Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Blvd, home of the famed Tropicana Bar. On Sundays the Tropicana throws an exclusive pool party and I hear it’s the place where the cool kids go. Yeah, we were there..ha ha ha. And you know who else was there? Gregory Smith, who of course plays played Ephram Brown on Everwood. Everwood was one of my faves, so it was really cool to be swimming in the pool with him, and sitting in front of him poolside. I didn’t want to say hi because he was with his friends, and I’m sure he was not that interested in talking to a fan. But it was really fun to see him up close and personal. I may have snagged a few stalker shots of him. Ha ha.
Also at the pool, and of MUCH lesser fame was ex-American Idol contestant and ex-Surreal Life houseguest, Ryann Starr. Ryann and her friends were sitting behind us at the pool, and I spoke to her only briefly when she asked is she could sit on my chair while talking to her friend. She seemed nice enough, and her body was smokin’….I have to call it as I see it.
Ok, ok…enough about ME. The blogger that was really in the thick of it was preppypunk. She got a ton of red carpet interviews (including some one on one time with comedy genius, Ricky Gervais) and she met a TON…a TON of stars at the EW party. I was extremely jealous of her, especially since she hung out for awhile with my TV boyfriend, John Krasinski. She even got a fab picture with him. And as she says on her site…
…hanging with super fan-friendly John Krasinski who totally remembered and loved Kathie from GMMR…
Yes, I could die now.
OK I’m done babbling…sorry for the crazy long post. Here’s what you MUST do IMMEDIATELY. Click on the links below and read all about TV with MeeVee’s own preppypunk and her Emmy experience. You will be jealous, but it’s a fun read.
