C’mon GMMR…Give it a Chance

December 27, 2006 by

GMMR LogoUm, it’s already Wednesday. I have this week off from work and it’s flying by. I mean, Wednesday…already?! I really wanted to use some time this week to get caught up on some of the shows that I missed during the Fall. As I promised in the last GMMR|Ducky podcast, I have caught up on Friday Night Lights (a show I only watched twice during the season). More on this later, but I will say that FNL has made its way to the Season pass list on my TiVo. In the words of Kelly Kapoor, it’s “A-MAH-ZING”. I mean I had heard it was good TV, but wow…just wow. And Matt Saracen – bless his heart. Well, I’m not going to gush too much right now since I plan on posting about Friday Night Lights later in the week.

So now that I’ve caught up on one show, its time to move on to Heroes. I know, I know. But listen, I just didn’t have the time during the season. Monday is a VERY busy TV night as it is. But I plan on getting caught up this week, and then I can actually read all the comments you leave every week when Julie posts her Heroes episode recaps.

This is where you all come in. I think I can fit one more “catch-up show” in, but I’m not sure which one to choose. I’ve head some really good things about a few shows, but I really can only take on one more at this point in time. So I was thinking that maybe you all could help me out. Let me know which new show I should watch during my vacation, and perhaps add to my repertoire come January.

Here are a few shows on my shorts list. Should it be one of these or do you have another suggestion?

  • What About Brian?
  • Brothers and Sisters
  • Men in Trees
  • 30 Rock
  • Jericho

P.S. Don’t bother nominating any shows that air on Mondays or Thursdays between 8-10pm, because I’m already overextended during those hours as it is. Ha!!

30 Rock. Definitely. I love that show. It has Tina Fey. She is awesome. Need I say more?

  2. Tracy on December 27th, 2006 10:04 am

Matt Saracen is coming up close as a new (and probably more realistic age wise) tv crush. The guy could not get any more adorable…[insert dreamy sigh]. FNL’s good though, huh?

  3. CasualViewer on December 27th, 2006 10:46 am

The Office and Heroes are the only two shows on I love so I’m glad you are getting caught up on Heroes.

As to what you should catch up on, it would help if I knew what you already followed but here goes. I’d suggest in order Studio 60, and if you already follow that then 30 Rock.

Forget What about Brian, Brothers and Sisters and Men in Trees, you’re not missing anything with those 3.

  4. Sara on December 27th, 2006 10:52 am

Def Brothers and Sisters. It has drama, comedy and brilliant acting esp from Sally Field. The best drama on the air right now!

  5. Julia on December 27th, 2006 11:10 am

30 Rock is hilarious. Definitely a favorite.

  6. Melody on December 27th, 2006 11:10 am

Don’t worry about Men In Trees – I watched it once and the writing made me cringe.

I have to wholeheartedly recommend 30 Rock, though!

  7. Julie on December 27th, 2006 11:16 am

Well, if you have to pick just one, I’d say 30 Rock. But I don’t really agree with the rest of the readers who say ditch Men in Trees. While the pilot wasn’t that awesome, I’ve really come to love it over the past few weeks. Since we share a brain, it’s possible you’d agree. 🙂

  8. Sandy on December 27th, 2006 11:24 am

30 Rocks definitely! Alec Baldwin is a RIOT.

  9. Jo on December 27th, 2006 11:45 am

you saw the 30 Rock pilot right? see i HATED the pilot. i don’t even think i finished it. but i started catching them online and it just gets funnier and funnier. if you loved Tina Fey’s style of humor on Weekend Update…then you’ll like 30 Rock.

  10. JenJen on December 27th, 2006 1:05 pm

    Brothers & Sisters definately.

  11. Becky on December 27th, 2006 1:10 pm

I would say 30 Rock. I really like Bones. I liked it last year, and I really like it this year.

Also, I’m really glad that you’re going to gush about Friday Night Lights. I can’t wait to read that.

  12. Sam on December 27th, 2006 1:13 pm

    30 Rock definitely!

    Best quote ever:

Liz wants to know why Jack (Alec Baldwin) is in a tuxedo when he doesn’t have an event to go to.
    Jack’s response:
“It’s after six. What am I, a farmer?”

The pilot doesn’t speak to how great the show has become. By the way, it’s Jenna Fischer’s favorite new show!

  13. Moe on December 27th, 2006 1:29 pm

30 Rock is hilarious–my one new “must watch” show. And I love Studio 60. Some of the episodes have been a bit iffy, but it has gotten better each week.

  14. Madelyne on December 27th, 2006 2:24 pm

I’d say “Men in Trees” because that one has gone from a so-so pilot, to a perfection completion piece to the Thursday night dream team on ABC. Plus, you have plenty of heavy dramas and the best comedies on TV (The Office, Scrubs, etc) on your television viewing list. So, have some fun with “Men In Trees”…I bet you will fall in love with it.

Second choice would be, Brother and Sisters, it has gotten better week to week and is now must see TV.

30 Rock is pretty good, too, but I feel spoiled with “The Office” and I think it tries too hard sometime, but it has improved a lot from the pilot.

  15. Ben on December 27th, 2006 2:43 pm

30 Rock has improved by leaps and bounds since the pilot, but of the shows you mentioned I like Jericho the best. It’s told the disaster story from a different angle and the writers have done a good job of balancing the “big” storylines of how the town copes after the nuclear attacks with the family issues of the main characters. There is enough mystery and drama that the plot flows along well, but not too much where if you miss one episode you are completely lost.

  16. TheNextKristin on December 27th, 2006 3:02 pm

I have to go with 30 Rock… Even if you’re busy watching other stuff live on Thursdays, you should definitely be Tivoing it and making time on weekends for The Scrubs And 30 Rock Hour.

My second choice would be What About Brian, which has vastly improved over the last year and is the best guilty pleasure you can ask for.

  17. TheNextKristin on December 27th, 2006 3:05 pm

Or… if you want a new suggestion for a show that’s commitment-free, try MythBusters on the Discovery Channel. I don’t get to watch it much during the season, but I love it. You wouldn’t expect a show about science to be this fun, but they smash cars, blow stuff up, and make fun of each other.

(Sorry about commenting twice in a row!)

  18. coloradokila on December 27th, 2006 3:37 pm

Brothers and Sisters!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want to go with a new show. So “30 Something”, so real so endearing.

If not that one, then What About Brian, as a good returning show.
You will see TNK and I talking about that one frequently – and she is correct it has vastly improved over last season.

  19. Julie on December 27th, 2006 3:42 pm

TNK, I didn’t know you liked Mythbusters! I watch it when it pops up on the Tivo. It is entertaining, educational, and a nice change of pace from all my other shows. Discovery Channel-wise, Dirty Jobs is also good times.

They’re not can’t-miss shows for me, but when I tune in I’m usually glad I did.

  20. Scooter McGavin on December 27th, 2006 4:19 pm

The best scene of any show so far this season was when Matt and Landry when shopping for a Member’s Only jacket. Seeing Coach’s face was priceless.

As for a sugestion, here’s a show that you don’t even have to catch up on: Knights of Prosperity, or as I like to call it, Let’s Rob Mick Jagger. It starts a week from today in Lost’s old spot.

  21. mg714 on December 27th, 2006 4:23 pm

GMMR – I am so glad you liked FNL. It’s definitely one of my favorite shows right now. I totally have a crush on Matt Saracen too!

as for what else to catch up on I’d go with either 30 rock or Brothers and sisters. If it has to only be one, though, 30 rock would be my first choice.

  22. GMMR on December 27th, 2006 4:26 pm

I adore Saracen, but alas, he can not be added to my TV boyfriend list…he’s just too young.

UPDATE: Oh snap….he’s 24 years old!! For reals?!

  23. mg714 on December 27th, 2006 4:37 pm

I’m still probably a little too old for him even if he’s 24, but I do totally love Zach Gilford. He’s definitely on my TV boyfriend list now! 😉

  24. Melody on December 27th, 2006 6:16 pm

They seem to be saying 30 Rock but I have no interest in that show, I higly recommend Brothers and Sisters. I love that show.

  25. GMMR on December 27th, 2006 6:17 pm

Yeah, I’m surprised as to how many “30 Rock” recs I’m getting.

  26. Morgan on December 27th, 2006 10:30 pm

brothers and sisters!!!!!! it is sooo good!

  27. TheNextKristin on December 27th, 2006 11:47 pm

I decided to watch Friday Night Lights tonight since there was nothing on and I just hadn’t been able to keep up, and I’d really like to know when it got so GOOD! I had a bunch of storylines to catch up on but I really enjoyed it.

  28. Amanda on December 28th, 2006 1:33 am

Yay!! I’m so happy you liked Friday Night Lights. It’s my new favorite show of the season. I’m with you. I have a huge crush on Matt Saracen, and I don’t feel bad about crushing on Gilford since he’s legal in real life!

For a rec. I’m gonna go with Men in Trees or Brothers and Sisters.

  29. Laiq on December 28th, 2006 3:37 am

Of the ones you’ve listed, personally I’d rec either Jericho (I love this show so much) or Men in Tree’s.

MiT is very easy, and light hearted and I enjoy the fact it doesn’t tax my brain.

Jericho is full of intrigue and questioning, and has Skeet Ulrich (which makes it superb).

  30. Tori Weber on December 28th, 2006 6:27 am

    30 Rock.

  31. Gayle on December 28th, 2006 12:57 pm

I started watching FNL when I read on here that I could watch all the episodes online. I spent every night from then on watching and I love love love Matt Saracen… he is totally my new tv boyfriend. He is just adorable- what girl WOULDN’T want him? Bad Boy Riggin’s isn’t to shabby himself, either… And my heart broke for Jason when he realize what had happened with Lyla..

Anyway, I also just watched the first 7 episodes of My Boys care of On Demand- anyone know how many episodes have already aired and where I might be able to find the later eps?

Hope everyone is having a great holiday!

  32. Bill on December 28th, 2006 3:39 pm

I rather like 30 Rock, but I’m not sure that it is necessary to “catch up” on it, since the story isn’t all that important, and I think it has been generally getting better as it goes. Just watch it when the next new episode airs (following the greatness of Office and Scrubs).

  33. Dust on December 28th, 2006 5:52 pm

Just wanted to put my two cents in. I’d recommend either What About Brian? Or 30 Rock. Both excellent shows in their own rights.

  34. genwithaG on December 30th, 2006 3:51 pm

    MEN IN TREES!!

I started watching this from the pilot because nothing else was on Friday nights. The pilot was so-so but I kept watching and I’m so glad that I have! The show just keeps getting better and better! The Jack and Marin (and now Lynn) ‘ship is great, not to mention that Jack is so hot, but the other character’s story lines are just as interesting! I think if you give it a chance you will love it too!

  35. Emmaxoxlee on December 31st, 2006 12:40 am

i may be the only one.. but
    WHAT ABOUT BRIAN.

i havent caught it as much as id like to

I happen to be writing to make you know what a great discovery my wife’s daughter enjoyed browsing your web site. She picked up a wide variety of things, which include what it’s like to possess an amazing giving character to get many others without difficulty thoroughly grasp a variety of multifaceted issues. You truly did more than her desires. I appreciate you for giving those effective, healthy, educational as well as easy tips about this topic to Mary.

Outstanding read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was performing slightly research on that. And he actually bought me lunch as I identified it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch!
