Love & Romance on Studio 60
February 6, 2007 by Kath Skerry
As a chick, I kind of like that Studio 60 is taking a turn away from the Sunsent Strip and more towards Romantic City Blvd. I actually like that the relationships between the characters are taking center stage and the Friday night “Studio 60” show is becoming more of the backdrop. Last night’s ep was by far the most heavy when it came to the three lead couples on the show. Here’s my 2 cents. But I’d love to know how you feel about how Studio 60 is doing these days.
Tom and Lucy…
That haven’t had their first date yet and already they are by far my favorite couple on the show. I’m glad Tom finally was able to explain the whole “date” situation to Lucy because she looked so sad to think he was just another jerk. And how hot did Lucy Davis look last night? Yowza!! I want to see more of these two and their little office romance (no pun intended). Seeing that Lucy is coming off a bad break-up I’m figuring lots of angst is in their future. And you know how I love the angst (well when it’s not overdone and drawn out for years…yeah, you know who I’m talking to).
Danny & Jordan…
Ok, so was Jordan into Danny this whole time or did she fall for him on the roof? I feel like I kind of missed something last night. My guess is that she never really considered him until he declared his love, but since then she hasn’t done anything else but consider him. Being the level headed gal that she is, it was normal for her to think Danny wanted to be with her because she was pregnant. I’m glad they cleared the air about that before they got anything started. I’m still not sure I would want the only man in my baby’s life to be an ex coke addict…but then again, they are in LA so there’s probably slim pickins when it comes to the straight edge guys. In the end they smooched, and smooched and I was happy for them. So yeah, I’m ok with seeing how this is going – you’ve got my attention.
Matt & Harriet…
zzzz….zzzzz…huh? what? Oh, am I suppose to be writing about Matt and Harriet? Yeah, I must have dozed off there for a moment. No matter how much the NBC promo department tries to force this couple down my throat, I just ain’t buying it. I think Studio 60 made a big mistake by having Matt and Harriet already broken up when the show premiered. I didn’t see them in love, and so I don’t really care why it’s so hard for them to be together or apart now. You need to be able to root for a couple to be together and with these two I don’t know what I am rooting for. And just why did they break up? Seems a lot of reasons were hashed out at the table last night, but I walked away with no more insight than I had before their little fight. Was it because Matt didn’t propose? Was it because Harriett was a crazy religious freak? Was it because Matt was worried about the implications of them working together? Who knows. All I know is that I was so tired of listening to them I almost hit ‘mute’ 3 different times. Anyway, it looks like Studio 60 is giving us a flashback ep so we can see just how Matt and Harriet first got together. Um, sorry, but it’s a little too late.

I
I love Lucy LOL
(that’s what I meant to say in the last one…ya got me how it didn’t make it)
I really like this show and am sure it will be cancelled just like all the other shows I loved (Arrested Development, Greg the bunny) long before it gets a chance to really get going….totally agree about Matt & Harriott – I just don’t care one way or the other if they are together – maybe they’ll win me over as the season moves along – but we’re halfway there and nothin’ yet!
I totally agree that Tom and Lucy are by far the best couple on the show.
I have been watching Studio 60 from the beginning. There’s a lot of interest in the show in my community because Tim Busfield, who plays Cal and has directed some of the episodes, is from my home town, and his brother is my boss. But I have to say that, overall, I feel the show has been a bit disappointing. There was SO much hype before it premiered, and we all know Aaron Sorkin is incredibly talented, but something about it just isn’t working for me.
I do care about Tom and Lucy, and Matt and Harriet to some extent (just because I think the dynamics of their relationship are fairly realistic and interesting), but Danny and Jordan…boo…they are not working for me at all. He seemed to fall for her SO abruptly, and for no reason…he hardly even knew her when he suddenly claimed he was in love with her. Then, when she asked him to stop making overtures at her (by asking her out, sending the letters of recommendation, etc.), he simply said, “No,” which, in the real world, could easily be considered sexual harassment.
Plus, don’t even get me started on how ridiculously unrealistic the character of Jordan is in the first place. There is no way in hell a WOMAN that young would ever become the president of a major television network. It just doesn’t work like that. In the rare cases when women do make it into positions of that much power, it takes them a long time to get there, and they are much older than Jordan is. Why Aaron Sorkin felt the need to make the president of his fictional network a sexy young woman is beyond me…and I think it takes a lot of credibility away from the show as a whole.
The other thing I find weird and annoying about Studio 60 is how horribly bad and awkward the show-within-the-show segments always are. Whenever we get a glimpse of the actual “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” show being shot, it is NEVER funny…sketch comedy writing is obviously not Sorkin’s forte, and it seems like he should get someone to help him who has some experience and talent in that department. Also, while I enjoy Sarah Paulson as behind-the-scenes Harriet, every time she’s actually performing on “Studio 60” she’s terribly unfunny…which is weird, considering how she’s supposed to be this amazingly talented sketch comedy actor. Even DL Hughley, who I adore, is not funny during those fake news segments. Again, like with Harriet, I love off-camera Simon, but whenever he is shown performing on the show, it just seems so awkward. Granted, these glimpses into the show-within-the-show are becoming fewer and farther between (which is a good thing), but it just seems weird to me that they’re getting that part SO wrong when that’s the entire foundation for the show.
That being said, there are other elements of Studio 60 that I am enjoying. Usually whatever happens in the writers’ room is pretty funny/cool. I think the dynamic between Simon and Darius is interesting. I also like all the religious conflict between Matt and Harriet (and Harriet and everyone else, to some extent). And the friendship between Danny and Matt is wonderfully charming and fun to watch.
Wow, I seriously did NOT mean to write that much. Sorry for writing a novella, but I feel much better now that I’ve gotten all that off my chest.
P.S. And yes, GMMR, agreed: Lucy Davis looked beautiful in last night’s episode! She’s totally adorable.
[…] 60 is getting better Give Me My Remote has some great analysis on the romances of Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. It is spot on: Matt and Harriet make me want to fall asleep, but the other two couples are quite […]
Quick question – whose baby is it? I must have missed the episode where that was revealed.
Thanks!
