Grey’s Anatomy Spin-Off in the Works
February 21, 2007 by Kath Skerry
According to the Wall Street Journal, ABC is planning to pursue a spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy. Kate Walsh, who plays Dr. Addison Montgomery on Grey’s will take the lead on the new show. Rumor has it that the 2 hour pilot will air in May.
Yeah, I’m not sure how I feel about this. Kate Walsh is amazing, and she has done so much by making Addison a loved character, but I don’t want her to leave Grey’s Anatomy. I love Addie, and I love her with all the interns. I’m sure if the spin-off is being produced by Shonda Rhimes it’s going to be fantastic, and it’s not like we are losing Addison all together, but I’ve go to sit with this news for a bit.
What do you think of Kate Walsh starring in a Grey’s spin-off? Voice off in the comments.

WHAT. I don’t know how I feel about this either. I love Addison. But I love her in the dynamic at Seattle Grace.
Unless maybe they cast [that person that kicked it on another favorite show last night] as her new love interest. Then that’ll right two wrongs in one swoop.
Is this the show’s unexpected move? You know, other than making us think Meredith is dead.
Killing off main characters (maybe)? Re-arranging the show? Addison getting her own spin off? Now…what exaclty wasn’t working with Grey’s going into this season that they have felt the need to shake things up so much? I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that things were perfectly fine before…if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
OK I am having difficulty with this. 1) I might not believe it if it weren’t in the WSJ. 2) I love Addison a ton – ON Grey’s – not on something else. I love the dynamic of her being there and I don’t feel her storyline at Seattle Grace is played out! OK if they are thinking of going the way of BSG and doing a summer webisode series, or even tv series, dedicated to her, but they better be planning to have her back at SG in the fall. I just feel wierd about this altogether.
i dont like this at all. they should just leave it as is!
I agree, I think they should leave it the way it is. Especially since I just started watching the show a few weeks ago. I can’t deal with that much change yet. 😉
I don’t like it either, but to me, it just seems too early to have a spinoff show.
I don’t like the idea at all. I love Kate Walsh, and really love her on GA.
Spinoffs are a “bad idea jeans” I can’t name one true spin off that was a success, except Melrose Place and I personally didn’t like it. It sucks that they are losing the great dynamic of the ensemble cast by taking Addision away from the mix. I used to despise her now she’s one of my favs. Sad.
I’m really not a fan of spinoffs, especially when the original show is still on the air. I love Kate Walsh as well but I’d rather Addison stay on GA with all the other characters than see her in a different enviornment.
Why oh why mess with something that is going so well…Addison is finally proving herself as a great character and asset to GA and upon realizing this the creators want to capitalize on that and take her away! The reason Addison is so great is that she is such a different character than the other women on the show- she is older, has had more experiences, some positive, some negative-marriage, career, etc and she is a character that is constantly growing…that makes it a great contrast to the naive interns.
If Meredith is dead and Addison leaves I think I might have to say goodbye to Seattle Grace.
Hate this idea! The way Kate Walsh came in and took the situation she came into, and like someone else said, made her character one of the favorites, it makes no sense. The dynamic of the whole show will change, for the worse I believe.
I’m not sure how I feel about this.
I love Addison, but I can see how they might be at a loss as to what/where to go with her character at Seattle Grace.
Who knows… not all spin off characters are bad.
Remember a little bar called Cheers with a a little guy named, Frasier?
kat has a point- there was also Rhoda, Phyllis, Maude, the Jeffersons, Good Times… (sorry. I’m a child of the 70’s)
But I just love K Walsh’s chemistry with the other actors on GA. I don’t want big changes. Or shark jumps.
Spin offs are a bit overrated in my opinion, and a Grey’s spin off? There are too many medical dramedies as it is!
Hopefully this is just some sort of rumour, because for one, if Shonda Rhimes splits her time between two shows there’s a chance that at least one of them will suffer, and also because Addison brings a lot of cool storylines into the show, not to mention that her random exchanges with Callie are (who’d have thought?) one of my favourite things about Grey’s right now.
Don’t forget Knots Landing. There are many succesful spinoffs.
Im not sure if using Addison as a main character is the right move for Grey’s. It doesn’t really seem that she is a main character on the show, but more of a supporting role.If anyone should have a sppin-off it should be one of the interns or Derek and Meridith is the best. Alos it was just reported that Taye Diggs is supposed to be joining her on her show, ehich won;t pan oput very well because he has 2 failed shows behind him. Im hoping for the best for this show but preparing for the cancel…hopefully she won’t be killed off of Grey’s Anatomy……p.s. Meredith can’t be dead,it’s called GREY’S ANATOMY not yang,or burkes,or shepards,or omalley’s anatomy. Chondra knows what shes doing
I cannot imagine a spin-off having remotely close to the magic that the Grey’s cast has. It just won’t work.
She’s a good character. She can handle her own show. I will give it a chance. All that said, this is a bad dea. I would rather Meredith die. At least then the show would have balls. I’d respect that. I’d be sorry for Derek but believe in the show. Spin Addie off and they are just diluting, spreading the magic too thin. Get rid of Mark. Get rid of George’s wife – whats-her-name. Then again don’t kill Meredith because those too do make me hold my breath while waiting for their kisses.
I’ll summarize my view by linking to the poll results regarding this possibility:

I am not understanding the need for a spin-off of a TV show that is so successful on its own….Why take a main character who breathes life into the show, remove her, and force the public who loves the show “as-is” to grow a new love for the same character on a different night…
I think it’s pretty smart to give her a spin-off while Grey’s is still hugely popular. Hey, if it doesn’t catch, she’ll come back to Grey’s. If it does, then we’ll have a while new set of addicting doctors to watch every week!
WTF!! Addison is my favorite character on Greys’ and me and my friends want her in the group!!! She was a great addition to the show, and i’ll miss her!!
