Slingbox…anyone?
March 9, 2007 by Kath Skerry
We interrupt out regulary scheduled TV talk for a Tech break. As most of you know, I am traveling a fair amount with my new job. I feel so far behind on my TV watching because of it. I’ve heard a lot about the Slingbox but yet I haven’t come across anyone that actually owns one. I guess a Slingbox will allow me to access my DVR from my computer while I’m traveling. If you have a Slingbox or know someone who does, let me know so I can get a first hand account on how it works.
And if you work for Slingbox and can steal one and send it my way, please do so. It’s a fair amount of money to shell out for something that will help my TV watching life easier.

I have a slingbox and love it. I have it controlling my cable box DVR so I can watch normal cable television and all the programs I’ve DVR’d on it. If you want it to control you DVR, you need to put two little sensors in front of your box that send the remote control signals to it. They’re really small and are not in the way at all.
The picture quality is decent…it has definitely improved since they first released it, but it is not perfect. They keep releasing updates that improve the quality, so it should only get better.
The setup wasn’t too bad…but I have a strong background in computers. I had to reconfigure it after a recent move and it seems that they’ve improved the process to provide more detailed step by step information.
I mainly use it to watch sports while at work or to watch TV on my laptop at home while I’m watching a movie/playing video games. I highly recommend it…in fact one of my friends has since bought one after seeing mine in action. If you have some specific questions I can try to answer them…but for me it’s definitely been worth it.
I have had one for over a year now and I can’t put my recommendation into words correctly. They are really cool! As a TV junky myself it has become invaluable for my frequent business travel. I can even catch shows with my wife while I am away.
A reasonable cost with no ongoing fee make it very worthwhile.

I have the slingbox AV and I love it. My suggestion would be go to buy.com and get it for $125. Try it out and if you like it keep it. If not you can return it.
I’m an American expat living in London. I know MANY Americans here who have Slingboxes installed at family members’ homes in the US. Everyone raves about them–people here find them especially useful for watching sports.
