Gilmore Girls Reacp: Hay Bale Maze
April 19, 2007 by Kath Skerry
Title: “Hay Bale Maze”
Original Airdate: April 17, 2006
GMMR Recapper: Whirl
It’s spring time in Star’s Hollow which means its time for the annual “Spring Fling” which is another small town festival that everyone loves. This year, however, Taylor has hoodwinked the town’s folk into having a hay maze, which is exactly what it sounds like. No one is excited about the giant maze of hay that ends up taking over the town but they’ll all be changing their tune by the end of the episode. More on that later.
Meanwhile Logan is crashing at Rory’s pad for the time being and Paris is pretty unimpressed about that. Personally I would love to get to look at Logan first thing in the morning but to each there own. Rory’s pretty self involved right now because she has her first real interview at a real newspaper in Providence. Of course her interview goes wonderfully and so she obsesses over whether or now she’ll actually get the job. Thank God she decided to bring Logan home for the festival so I have something pretty to look on while she debates her maybe future.
April’s in town to visit her Dad. She’s rocking pierced ears, new glasses and shiny lip-gloss like only a teenager can. She’s loving living in New Mexico and even brought Luke back a rather large and gaudy silver bracelet. It’s utterly not him but he wears it for the rest of the episode with a smile on his face, because he’s Luke. And I love him.
And then there’s Lorelai who is busy with…well nothing really. Turns out she’s worried about Logan and Rory, or so she tells Sookie. She doesn’t think he takes anything seriously, especially the millions of dollars he lost in his bad business venture. Once Logan and Rory get into town it’s awkward and Lorelai is having a hard time keeping her feelings hidden. Even when Logan is sweet and brings her flowers, heck the guy makes her and Rory dinner for goodness sake.
When Rory is offered the job (which surprises absolutely no one) she doesn’t know if she really wants to take it. Especially since it would mean turning down all the other things she wants more like the Reston fellowship. What is the Reston fellowship? Beats me but Rory wants it, and we all know how it goes with things that Rory wants. Logan tells Rory to go after it because who really cares if the job has a salary and a 401k? This really gets Lorelai’s blood pumping and her not so subtle jabs at Logan start having an air of Emily to them. Speaking of Emily, she is not in this episode, but she should be.
Thankfully Logan and Lorelai have an unexpected rendezvous in the middle of the night while looking for water and pie, respectfully. Needless to say they have it out. Lorelai tells Logan that she doesn’t like the risks he takes and his lack of seriousness. Logan lets Lor know that he’s well aware of his mess ups but didn’t want to bemoan his mistakes to Lorelai because he wants her to like him. He says he’s excited to be out on his own, without the money hand of his family and shouldn’t Lorelai of all people understand that? They seem to come to an understanding and eat pie. Literally.
It’s Spring Fling day and the maze turns out to be a big hit with everyone. You had to know that one of these times Taylor was bound to get it right. When alone Logan informs Rory that she should not factor him into her decision making for the future. WHAT? Actually what he means is that she should do whatever she wants and really follow her dreams because maybe he’ll follow her. With that Rory decides no to take the job and go for the fellowship which is where her heart lies.
And finally, when Lorelai is in the maze we get the moment we have all been waiting for, because she runs into Luke. Again literally. They make small talk about April and before they part Lor blurts out that she’s sorry. She’s sorry that she went to Christopher right away and that it was really wrong of her to do that. She can’t believe it’s taken her this long to admit to him how wrong it was of her (She can’t believe it? Try being me.) and she’s sorry. Luke’s sorry too. He’s sorry for the way he handled the April situation, thinking that he had to deal with it on his own when he knows Lorelai could have helped him. He thinks he was scared and maybe he was using April as a way to push Lor away and that is not how you fix things. They decide they are okay and walk away from each other, back into the maze. For the moment I have been waiting a very LONG time for, I admit to being utterly under whelmed.
Highlights of the Episode:
– Logan in nothing but his boxers, which was some serious eye ecstasy.
– Kirk in a Minator costume. Kirk on stilts. Kirk in general.
Tune in Next Week: Why? Lorelai goes into Luke’s Diner. Ohhh. Ahhh. Can something happen already please?
Being born and raised amongst the igloos of Canada shaped Whirl’s love of hockey, beer and the warmth of the television screen. Though she refuses to wear spandex she has sworn to use her powers of sarcasm for the greater good of man kind, and disguises herself daily as a mild mannered office clerk. Oh yeah, and she’s not too bad at Trivial Pursuit. Seriously. Seriously.

I know this is horrible of me but I was sort of hoping Rory wouldn’t get that job because it seems like anything Rory wants, Rory gets. It’s almost like her life is perfect. Well…it IS a tv show. 😉
Also, I was SOOO glad to see April. When she first came on I was a little standoffish because I don’t like children (now you all think I’m really horrible ;-)) but she really won me over. She’s one of my favorite characters.
I’m sorry you were underwhelmed. Personally, I got exactly what I was hoping for. I knew it wouldn’t be all “I’m so sorry, I love you, let’s get married right away, muah muah muah” – I thought it was touching and really well done.
By the way, if anyone was wondering, when Rory is showing Logan around town, he says it’s like Colonial Williamsburg but with fewer KNICKERS and tricornered hats. I had two very angry people in my living room and a call from my mother on that one….haha.
Sus- I agree…it was a touching moment, but I was still underwhelmed because I feel like they need a BIG moment to make up for everything that has happened this season. I mean big emotion. I hear, we’ll be getting that next episode!
Not gonna lie, I was getting quite upset with Lorelai and all her stabs at Logan…they have been together for how long now? Yes, he is a little ‘adventurous’ but he loves her daughter and has proven that (but maybe I’m bias because he’s one of my tv boyfriends…so charming!). I think he reminds her a little too much of herself (which he brought to her attention in the episode). I agree that she is acting a little like her mother- if only she would realize it!
We needed more Kirk in that episode…but really, they could always put in more Kirk.
Did anyone notice when Logan and Rory were in the maze and it came to the fork, they stood there for a second and then he grabbed her hand and the went the same direction together? Loved it – scared me for a split second, but loved it.
Whirl – you are not kidding me. Next to the Winchester boys being back this week, seeing Logan in just his boxers was the hightlight of my week.
But really guys – this show needs to be over after this season – I can feel the ending coming. Anything more would just ruin it for me.
