Celine Dion and Elvis Duet on American Idol

April 26, 2007 by

At first I found this creepy and disturbing, but after really watching it out I found it quite fascinating.  Check out Celine Dion dueting with Elvis Presley on American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” fundraiser last night.  What did you think?

There was a program on pbs not too long ago that showed him in concert like that. The people in the audience said it was so real that it was creepy. I think it’s pretty cool.

OK…definitely too much cold medication…What did I just watch?

I definitely enjoyed it! I’m a huge Celine fan and I wish I could of seen it in person, plus it’s for charity…what’s not to like!?!

    Totally creepy and weird!!!

I fast forwarded through most of it last night.

I kind of thought it might be interesting like when Natalie Cole sang with her father, but I agree that it seemed kind of creepy. Was Celine Dion actually there or was it some kind of taped thing? I loved how Ryan said to that girl in the audience that he understood that she was confused and would explain it to her later! Ha!

re:”Was Celine Dion actually there or was it some kind of taped thing? ”

She did one prerecorded session in the AI studio that was later mixed to show her with Elvis using simple green-screen technology. The Elvis video was from his late 60s TV special.

Then for the live show they had her come out with an Elvis look-alike come out with her, and also showed them periodically either from a distance or from behind etc so you wouldn’t be able to tell it wasn’t Elvis (lol)…

The hardest part was probably to keep the prerecorded version and live coverage in synch as they cut back and forth.

    MY 2 cents.

Totally creepy…and according to tv guide, there were 7 contestants in white suits behind them, meaning they must have filmed the entire thing before hand, so I don’t doubt it if the audience was a pre recording too. And I thought that when they panned out and I saw the judging table, I saw Simon in his traditional grey t-shirt and not his suit.

Who knows though–it could have made me crazy 🙂

Yeah, I saw something on EW that said Sanjaya was in the group behind Celine and “Elvis” – but I hadn’t noticed that at first. Very strange.

regardless of how it was done, or who was behind them, Elvis and Celine are both amazing (although I am actually not a Celine fan at all) and the duet was awesome! Check out other great moments from last nights show at scenemaker.net

I found it fascinating, creepy and disturbing. I kept thinking — what if Elvis wouldn’t want to perform with Celine Dion? It’s like tough crap, you’re dead, we’ll make you do what we want!

Nobody messes with Elvis! That’s disturbing…

How did they do that? It was really creepy and very life like. I know that it was a video, but how did they make it where we had a 360 degree view of him? Weird..

“how did they make it where we had a 360 degree view of him? ”

They had an Elvis look alike with Celine for the live shots – prerecorded special FX / edited tape for the shots showing Elvis with Celine alone.

The whole thing was awesome. Elvis is the greatest, and it’s nice to see that his enormous heart and charitable spirit can live on this way. He sold a billion records and his home is only 2nd to the white house in terme of annual visitors. When he did a song it came from the heart ans soul, unlike many today where it’s more about ego. The King Lives!

Unbelievable performance by Celine Dion and Elvis, it must have been tricky for Celine, it was outstanding!

Awesome, awesome, awesome…..I hope more artist will attempt this in the future!

I thought it was really well done, both from a musical standpoint and technically. I mean, that Elvis look-alike did a great job not accidentally moving his face into the frame during the “live” shot. You’d see his shoulder or his hand but not even a glimpse of his face. They put a lot of work into it, even slightly blurring the focus on Celine to match the older Elvis footage. Creepy? Slightly. Enjoyable? Yes.

the performance flowed such positive energies of comfort and hope,it was healing in a way to watch and hear them both sing this way,and that bono a real spiritual warrior

I thought it was awesome. I love Elvis and was it great to see him perform. I don’t know how they did it but it looked so real.

This was very, very well done. I am not a Celine fan but am a big Elvis fan. The 68 comeback special which this clip is taken from just was made new agian! This is one of Elvis heart felt songs that he gave his all! The thought of two great performers on the same stage is mind blowing!

I think it is great that they did this. So many young kids dont realize the talent of Elvis. It was so nice for them to be able to see how special this man was and that even though he is gone his music will live on forever. I am not a big fan of Celine but though she did a very good job. It was soo real looking to.

I thought Elvis and Celine was fantastic. I was in shock that it could be done. The best video I have ever seen. I would love to buy the whole idol finale with that on it. It was a great finale. Can you tell me how where to buy a copy. I have been searching.
    Thank you,
