It’s Official: VERONICA MARS Canceled

It’s over. Yes, VERONICA MARS, one of the smartest and best acted shows on television over the past few years has officially been canceled by The CW. In its place…more Pussycat Dolls and a 7th Heaven-esque show set in Africa. And no, I’m not kidding. Oh and the kids of One Tree Hill will be back but they are fast forwarding the show to see the characters when they are out of college (and closer to the real ages of the actors that play them).

The rumors have been rampant for months that the show was going to be canceled, and over the past 48 hours the rumors were changing about every 5 minutes. I decided to hold off until today when the official word came out, because I didn’t want to get hopes up. But yeah, it’s done…and it sucks. At least we will get to hear Kristen Bell’s voice again, as she’s the narrator of The CW’s most promising new show Gossip Girl (created by The OC’s Josh Schwartz).

I’m not sure what Dawn Ostroff and her cronies at The CW are doing, but they sure as hell have given up on making quality television.

Anyone want to be depressed with me right about now?

I don’t even WATCH that show and it still sucks.
I don’t think I will be watching ANYTHING on the CW next season. First Everwood, then GG…. stupid!

I remember when the WB was a new network that provided quality youth-oriented drama.

I remember when UPN became a refuge for the minority image on a prodominantly white medium.

What has been left in their ashes is a place where true TV afficianados go to die.

Curse you CW, and all that you stand for.

This is terrible news! I really was hopefully for at least a mid-season return. I’m very sad – the CW really hasn’t had a good track record – Why is Dawn Ostroff in charge of that network?First she cancels Everwood, then they don’t give an answer to Gilmore Girls in enough time for a real series finale (though I did like the last ep) and now Veronica Mars is canceled. If it weren’t for Everybody Hates Chris and Smallville, I would boycott that entire network (and I still might). I wish we still had the WB.

    I am utterly heartbroken.

I thought they weren’t deciding the fate of VM until after the Upfronts. Are they sure about this or is it another “it’s canceled, well, not yet” thing? My heart can’t take it.

I wonder if Rob Thomas will make the VM movie that was talked about at one time. I’d gladly donate money towards that movie (if it had the full cast) and it’d be kind of cool to have a movie totally paid for by fans.

I really don’t know what to say except that this is unbe-freakin-lievable. My CW boycott is officially on!

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  11. magstress on May 17th, 2007 2:24 pm

I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut. I was hoping against hope that this wouldn’t happen. VM is such an amazing show and is (was) one of the few with a strong female lead. The fact it is being replaced by the Pussycat Dolls makes me ill.

  12. kilwiggle7 on May 17th, 2007 2:25 pm

I’m so unsettled by this news. Veronica Mars was my favorite tv show this year (followed CLOSELY by Friday Night Lights and the Office). I scheduled my social life around VM and often watched the episodes many times a week (thank god for tivo). I enjoyed trying to solve the arcec mysteries right along side of VM, and try and figure out the little nuances that led veronica to the right conclusions in the single episode mysteries.

It’s seriously one of the best written, best acted shows on tv right now, and I’m really sad that it doesn’t have the following in the ratings like it should, which led to it’s demise. I never wanted to have to say this, but I’m going to support each one of the great actors and actresses in what they do from here on out.

And who am I kidding, I’m not going to watch anything on the CW anymore. Their new shows (other than GG- because of the KB voiceovers- ironic of the shows initials?) are dead to me. I really hope they flop.

  13. Megan on May 17th, 2007 2:36 pm

I’m so bummed out. I was holding out hope that the CW would hold onto it and actually give it some promotion. I have no more reasons to watch the CW anymore. THe only thing keeping me going right now is that I get to see an hour of The Office tonight.

  14. Carli on May 17th, 2007 2:46 pm

Oh, it’s on Ostroff! Let the boycott begin!! I was already depressed after just having watched ‘Little Children’ and I come on to see this news…frak The CW!

  15. Post-it Thief on May 17th, 2007 2:46 pm

Suckface. That seriously tainted my Office-joy today.

  16. Poppy on May 17th, 2007 2:51 pm

I am SO DEPRESSED. Wah. First Jenna breaks her back then The CW breaks VM completely. Ugh.

  17. jenintx on May 17th, 2007 2:54 pm

Gah, this is completely ridiculous. The CW is already about 90% crap shows(imo) and now they’ve made it 95%. That’s some smart programming there.
I wonder if it’s not a small blessing though. I think the CW has already tried to change the show, to it’s detriment, and sort of strangled the creativity a bit (I might be a minority, but as much as I loved the snappy dialogue and great actors, I haven’t loved this season as much as 1 & 2) They probably would have screwed it up even more(the rumors that most of the cast would be leaving if the show came back was just screwed up)
So I’m very sad, but resigned. And I hope all the creative people in front and behind the camera are able to go on to other great projects, I’ll be looking for them.

  18. Thea on May 17th, 2007 2:59 pm

First Gilmore Girls and now Veronica Mars, well that’s it for me and the CW. Bye bye CW. I will now commence my mourning. Sad, sad day this, and on my Happy Office Finale Day too.

  19. Melissa on May 17th, 2007 3:04 pm

I’m with Mannie. I think Rob could do a terrific Veronica Mars movie. In any case I’ll definitely tune in for whatever he does next.

  20. Susan on May 17th, 2007 3:10 pm

Crying on the inside. Will be crying physically as soon as I leave work. The execs at The CW really don’t know quality television when it sticks “her boot up its ass”. I think I am done with that half-assed network.

  21. Laiq on May 17th, 2007 3:28 pm

Along with everyopne else, gutted can only begin to describe how terrible I feel – This has been an amazing show, that I was so fortunate to view, and feel a part of. I hope, like others that there is still a glimmer of hope with the whole “june 15th” thing – but who knows what is really happening?

(I would be much sadder if I wasn’t about to spend the weekend meeting Jason Dohring and Michael Muhney at the UK convention BreakOut – however!!)

  22. Megan on May 17th, 2007 4:26 pm

F@ck the CW. After the demise of both GG and VM, I simply will not watch that channel anymore. CW = Cant Watch.

  23. micki on May 17th, 2007 4:41 pm

I HATE THIS!!!! Veronica Mars is IT! 🙁
CW has made very bad choices. When I say bad I mean beating 7th Heaven to death and deciding to make a show about the Pussycat Dolls.

  24. Jenny on May 17th, 2007 4:46 pm

My heart just sank. I am so sad and disappointed. I watch a lot of tv, but I only have a few “must see” shows, and VM was one of them. I am totally disappointed. And I doubt the season finale is going to give the proper farewell it needs. I could cry.

  25. Shari on May 17th, 2007 7:08 pm

there are no words for how sad and depressing this news is.

  26. sim on May 17th, 2007 8:23 pm

I throw my hat in the ring with the rest – Veronica Mars will be greatly missed! I agree with Shari…there are just no words.

  28. Lisa on May 17th, 2007 11:10 pm

I have no words to describe how I feel about this. Veronica Mars is one of the best shows on television. After the finale next wext, I can honestly say I won’t be watching the CW ever again.

  29. Sarah on May 18th, 2007 12:19 am

Stupid CW!! VM is one of the best shows on TV!! If only VM had been on another network, it might have been saved!!! I say we boycott the CW and show them what truly low ratings are!! I know that I will not be watching any shows on that network.

  30. Sus on May 18th, 2007 6:59 am

    We’ll miss you, Ronnie!

Well now I suppose I’ll never watch the CW again. First Gilmore Girls, now Veronica Mars. I foresee a serious lack of quality on that channel.

  31. Heather on May 18th, 2007 9:42 am

Megan, I totally agree with your take on the “CW- Can’t Watch”. High-larious, and now really true.
I am so frustrated with television these days. Really great shows get canceled way too quickly and the mind-numbingly stupid ones stay on forever! I don’t understand how they let someone run a network that would replace Veronica Mars with the freakin’ Next Pussycat Doll.
I think I’m going to be ill.
    I heart LoVe

  32. myranda on May 18th, 2007 8:16 pm

This is a sad day. I thought VM had hope when GG was canceled, but alas, Dawn O. and the CW want to utterly destroy all hope for audiences with brains. There is no hope for a tv Renaissance unless Joss Whedon and Rob Thomas have a baby.
