GREY’S ANATOMY Season Finale Recap…Seriously?

GREYโ€™S ANATOMY Season Finale Recapโ€ฆSeriously?

WARNING! The post you are about to read is smug, sarcastic, and at times perhaps unfairly harsh. I have a feeling I might come back later and want to take a few things back, but for now I gotta go with my gut, and my gut is saying…WHY?!
Excuse me. I was wondering if you could help me. See I’m trying to find GREY’S ANATOMY. It’s this brilliantly written drama set in a hospital in Seattle. It explores the lives and loves of five interns and the people that come into their lives during their first years as interns. It’s known for it’s witty banter and smart and unpredictable storylines. I can’t seem to find that show and I was wondering if you maybe could help me find it. If so, leave me a comment and let me know.

Seriously. Seriously. THAT was the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy? That was the episode that was supposed to keep me satisfied and enthusiastic until the show returns in the Fall? Really? I’m not sure at what point in the season Shonda Rhimes decided to turn her smart and sassy show into a soap opera, but it was quite obvious last night that that’s where we’ve ended up. Complete with the soft lighting and overly predictable story arc. And maybe that’s where we should start.

Raise your hand if you really thought Christina and Burke were going to be married? Did the writers really think they were pulling one over on us? Did they think we were going to assume that Christina would be the one to call it off, when it’s been obvious for weeks that Preston didn’t want this to happen? Come on now, give us some credit.

Upon returning home Christina realizes that Burke has left. His things are gone, and he is gone…and she is free. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure if Christina was relieved or devastated by being left at the alter – were we supposed to know? But more importantly just how gone is Preston Burke? Like gone, gone…as in never coming back to Seattle Grace? As in Isaiah Washington FINALLY got booted from the show as he should have been months ago? He wasn’t at the ABC Upfronts earlier this week (but then again neither were Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight so I didn’t think to much of it). Is Burke/Washington really gone? Fingers crossed.

Moving on the dark and twisted relationship of Meredith and Derek. I guess I didn’t truly grasp how unstable and emotionally stunted Meredith Grey was until tonight. She has McDreamy offering all of him and she turns him away. I’m not saying Derek is perfect, far from it, but he’s a good man and he loves her. But she loves being the victim more than happy so they are done. If Meredith is going to be single next season let’s at least hope she returns to the slutty girl who sleeps with inappropriate men…she was at least fun. But I fear that fun is going to be a word that won’t be used to describe Meredith ext season. Not when she finds out that the woman Derek admitted to flirting with in the bar is not only going to be a new intern at Seattle Grace, but that she’s also her half sister. Looks like more of Meredith’s frakked up family issues will be dealt with next Season. Zzzz.

So next up is that saga of Alex and Rebecca…or Ava, or whatever we are calling her these days. What a complete shock it was to find out that Ava had fallen for Alex. Wow! Who would have thunk it? And you can imagine my surprise when it was revealed that Alex turned her down because he wasn’t good enough for her. Then the shocking moments of clarity when he realized that he did love her, only to run back to the hospital and have her be gone. I mean really. Wow. That was some original and inspired storytelling there.

As was the race for Chief of Staff. Now here’s a story arc that has been weaved into the entire season. Not to be smug but I thought it was quite obvious that Richard would remain on as Chief. But it was good to waste time all season on it.

Just to prove I’m not totally down on Grey’s I will take a moment to point out the finer moments of last night’s episode. Starting with the shocker of all shocks…no, it’s not George failing the intern exam and leaving Seattle Grace (but I will get to that in a second), but rather Bailey NOT being named Chief Resident. Um, how did that happen? Did I miss something here? I’m not saying that Callie didn’t deserve the position, but I was left unsure as to why she deserved it more than Dr. Miranda Bailey.

George and IzzieTo be honest, I’m not sure what upset Bailey more, not getting the Chief Resident position or feeling that she failed George. By not passing his intern exam, George has the option to repeat his internship from the beginning or give up being a doctor all together. Wow, I guess I never realized the dire consequences. He couldn’t get a do over? In the end it seems that George has had enough and decides to leave his dreams of being a surgeon behind. I gotta say I was a bit perplexed by this. Why not be an intern again? You’d be kicking ass and taking names. You’d be picked for all the best surgeries and you wouldn’t have to waste your off time with studying or anything. Is George really going to give up being a doctor (and don’t get me started on the years of school he endured) just because he doesn’t want to repeat his internship? This is one storyline I’m really excited to see played out next season. How are they going to keep George around…because I love him and I need him in my Grey’s.

And I’m not the only one that loves George. His wife Callie does…as does his best friend Izzie. And she told him that last night. I’m not sure what’s going on with these two. Does George love Izzie? I thought so, but then he decided that he and Callie should have a baby . What gives?

Alright, alright I’m going to stop now. I’m going to end this novel. But I’m hoping that Shonda and her team take this summer to reevaluate the direction of the show. Maybe I should send her Season One on DVD and remind her how great it was at the beginning. Bring back the greatness.

The highly predictable hour of television had a few bright spots but they were truly few and far between.

THE WORST SEASON FINALE EVER AIRED! Absolutely no loose ends were tied up. This wasn’t a finale–this was the set up episode before the finale. This should have been last weeks episode. It was pure craptacular hateness.

    *SPOILERS!*

No Gizzie conclusion, MerDer I think broke up, Callie gets Chief, nothing makes sense in this world. I expected that stuff about Cristina and Burke not getting married, but the rest was pure bullcrap. Murders, long lost sister who flirted with McDreamy in the last ep is an intern. OMG, we’ve seen this all before.

I am so damn dissapointed I am ANGRY!

  2. Distracted on May 17th, 2007 9:40 pm

Completely agree with Thursday Morning. While I felt so bad for George, Grey’s finale was completely weak. *Sigh* But at least the Office got it right and I can have the sweetest dreams….

  3. Mandy on May 17th, 2007 9:53 pm

    Awful! Beyond awful.

I’m going back to watch The Office again to get the stink of Grey’s out of my brain.

  4. Carly on May 17th, 2007 10:00 pm

Well.. i dont care about grey’s anymore. when the office is on next year at 9 i wont have any trouble choosing which to watch.

honestly, though, there was never a doubt in my mind that i wouldnt choose the office.

  5. Maggie on May 17th, 2007 10:00 pm

Well, I guess I shouldn’t be disappointed for not watching Grey’s tonight. I was so excited over The Office that I practically ignored the first half hour and gave up after that. ๐Ÿ˜›

  6. Annie on May 17th, 2007 10:06 pm

    suckfest 2007
I agree with Maggie & Carly

  7. Annie on May 17th, 2007 10:08 pm

    …suckfest 2007

This just made me want to watch The Office instead of Grey’s next year 100 times more than I already did.

  8. Jenny on May 17th, 2007 10:15 pm

…anticlimatic. Lots happened, but it was all boring. Now, lets get back to The Office….

  9. Kaci on May 17th, 2007 10:18 pm

My favorite couple is no longer together and might never be back together if casting rumors are true. Seeing as my faorite Office couple is together, bhowever, chosing between this and the Office next fall won’t be too difficult.

PS: So, my little sister missed the entire Office finale and all but the last 5 minutes of Grey’s (and she didn’t tape either, so we’re waiting for iTunes). She was so sad that Burke/Cristina didn’t get married that I didn’t tell her Ryan and Kelly, her favorite Office couple, broke up. I did tell her about Micheal and Jan, and she said offhandedly, “Good. Well, you know if Ryan and Kelly broke up after today I just might have to kill myself, or stop watching TV all together.”

Not gonna lie, kind of scared.

  10. mg714 on May 17th, 2007 10:30 pm

wow – it sounds like the grey’s finale was disappointing. I only saw the last few minutes so I can’t judge. I’m disappointed burke and christina didn’t get married, but to tell the truth I haven’t really been keeping up on this show the second half of this season anyway. Not that there was any question, but at least I know I won’t be missing much when I’m focused on The Office next season (and oh what a season it will be after that finale!).

  11. beth on May 17th, 2007 10:36 pm

I definitely expected more out of grey’s but you can’t win them all. They just set up a lot for next year- will Alex go after Ava/Rebecca? how will George tell Callie he failed? how is Meredith going to react to her sister working at SGH? etc, etc. Honestly though, I can’t say that I care how it wraps up- there are only about 2 story lines i care about now on that show and thats not enough to keep me. The Office will definitely hold my attention during the 8pm timeslot.

  12. Damian on May 17th, 2007 10:47 pm

All I can say to the people over at Grey’s is………….

    SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?!

  13. shari on May 17th, 2007 11:14 pm

Grey’s sucked. plain and simple. I agree w/ Thursday Morning. You could have basically predicted all of this from the promos. There was no conclusion, no character progression, nothing but contrived cliche after contrived cliche.

Thank God The Office still made this an AWESOME finale Thursday!!! JAMMMMMMMMMMM Goodness!!!!

  14. JD on May 18th, 2007 12:32 am

wow. All I have to say that Grey’s was crap tonight. Pure crap. Nothing happened and everyone on that show is insane (minus Bailey). Thank God I have The Office or else I would have been bummed I’m still glowing from the *date* that Jam is going to go on.

  15. Sam on May 18th, 2007 12:41 am

I didn’t think Grey’s was awful. Now, I would never even consider watching Grey’s over The Office, and obviously, tonight’s Grey’s did nothing to change my mind. But I enjoyed this episode much more than last year’s Grey’s finale. It was contained, well-edited, and full of angst… basically what you expect if you’re a fan of Grey’s when it it’s at its best.

I do think that it’s pretty ridiculous that Meredith and Derick is still an issue. I mean, come on– just be happy. I would have liked at least one nice storyline here, but nothing came through on that front. I guess the episode’s title was right.

But there are few, if any, better actresses on TV than Sandra Oh. I mean, she absolutely rocked her scenes tonight.

  16. Katie on May 18th, 2007 12:50 am

All those months of sitting through the backstabbing and the bitching over who was going to be Chief only to be dealt the status quo.

    What a bloody waste.

  17. Jen on May 18th, 2007 1:11 am

Boring….I hate to say it, but i’ve been less-interested in Grey’s the last few months. ๐Ÿ™ Makes me sad.

  18. Allison on May 18th, 2007 1:18 am

I was also on quite the high after The Office ( ๐Ÿ™‚ ! ), and the buzzkill that is grey’s anatomy left me very dissapointed, but, I will still be watching next year because it’s still one of the best shows on TV and as always, my favorite shows get scheduled at the saaaaame time…sigh…

  20. Matt on May 18th, 2007 3:07 am

disappointing… do we really need a love triangle involving derek-merideth-and her *sister* (by the way, has this sister been mentioned before… or is she just a half-sister we’ve never seen or heard of)? 90% of the characters are frustratingly socially inept (and not in a realistic, “the office”-style), and unlikeable- especially merideth.
Having Richard stay on as chief was a major cop-out as well… these type of decisions (building up “suspense” for months only to maintain the status-quo) obliterate the faith that the audience puts in the writers…
    Just diappointed….

  21. asdo on May 18th, 2007 6:55 am

I LOVE THIS EPISODE!!!! .. such great moments .. so emotional .. the thing that sucked though was that i thought there would be two episodes after it .. and didnt realize it was the finaly ๐Ÿ™ .. booo .. but all i can say is wow!!! it had its awwwwww moments and :O ones as well .. wht a great show!!

  22. Emily on May 18th, 2007 9:34 am

What happened to the funny banter that once made this show entertaining? Now I just get depressed from watching. No one is happy, nothing good happens to anyone. I know it’s a drama but it’s getting a bid ridiculous.

  23. samsmom on May 18th, 2007 10:49 am

Is this the half sister that just had the baby? Didn’t her mom just die? Is she Thatcher and The Chick from St. Elmos’ Fire daughter? I thought the ep sucked, too. Meredith summed it up nicely…It’s over.

Also, is Burke off the show now? George did a great job tonight, but that was about it.

  24. Thursday Morning on May 18th, 2007 11:13 am

No, that wasn’t the sister who had the baby–Molly was. That was Lexie, the one who was off at med school, the one we hadn’t met yet.

I shoudl have seen that one coming. Greys has become too predictable for me.

For me though, Meredith has finally come to the realization of who she is. She is broken, damaged. She isn’t the type of woman who is going to rely on a man to pick up the pieces for her and put her back together. I thought Derek knew her better than that. I thought the writers knew us better than that. Meredith realized that Derek was trying to change her and that she didn’t need to be changed. This is who she is.

I disagree with you. Derek loves all of her. He wants to be a part of her life but she pushing him away.

  26. mg714 on May 18th, 2007 11:28 am

For me, this show lost its way weeks (months?) ago, which is why I basically stopped watching and just kept up through online recaps. I think the turning point for me was when George and Izzie wound up sleeping together. That was just over the top for me and took things in a direction I didn’t care to see it go. I just really felt like I haven’t missing much and with enough TV to try to keep up with, Grey’s unfortunately has been dropped from my regular viewing list. I like the cast and really liked the show last year, but now that The Office will be on opposite Grey’s – I’m afraid it won’t make it back onto my viewing schedule next season.

  27. Brooke on May 18th, 2007 11:41 am

Here, here! Pass the margaritas. Seriously, what the crap has happened to this show? I’ve been bored for weeks, but… what was that? It’s all gotten so trite and theme-y and recycled. Like you said, Zzzz…

  28. McOfficeFan on May 18th, 2007 1:09 pm

It says so much to me about how bad this show is becoming by
Going from the show I used to watch faithfully at 9pm…to the show I then TiVo’d to watch “commercial free” at 10pm…then the TIVo I’d watch maybe the next day…to the next week,

…To now the Season Finale I’m content with just reading about on-line. And why??….

1)The main characters are barely likable anymore…let alone do you actually care about…

Are we actually to believe that any ONE woman wants that whiney, spineless, homely little man George, let alone a beautiful & let’s not forget rich latino woman who’s way too good for him in the first place, and who is also way too insecure…which is why she’s with the loser in the first place and why she cares way too much about what he and the rest of his: dark & woe is me (Meredith), self-centered, conceited & downright annoying (Izzie), boring and underdeveloped (Alex) and cold, unappreciative and also annoying (Christina), little intern friends actually think of her. Did Callie not have friends of her own before this group of interns walked into SG? If so, where are they and why are they not telling her to dump this zero and let him go ahead with silly Izzie because they’re perfect for eachother?…they’re both annoying, self-centered and adulterous…she didn’t even want his boring little tail until he was married. I haven’t liked her at all since Denny died. Come to think of it, Denny was the only reason to even watch her character.

George and Izzie are 2 of the worst characters on TV!…Funny, they didn’t start that way, and they had some potential, but WHAT HAPPENED?

And regardless of what people think of Isiaih Washington personally, Dr. Burke was always too good for Christina and the way she treated him. That relationship was totally unbelievable from the very start, so if it’s finally (according to the recap) then GOOD!

And finally, the “spin-off” was also corny! The characters were all cliche and the feel is already of a soap opera from the very start. At least Grey’s turned into a soap. For Shonda’s sake, I hope she revamps the series based on the response to that pilot because I don’t know anyone who really liked it.

Please GREY turn back before you go too far to salvage. Believe it or not I really WANT to like this show again!

  29. Christy on May 18th, 2007 2:34 pm

Speaking of Optimistic and hopeful, I am certainly not after last nights episode. I guess it did me the favor of not being depressed that there is not any new episodes until next season. At this point I could care less.

  30. Lexi on May 18th, 2007 2:48 pm

This show has always been a crock of shit; people are now just starting to realize it. “The Office” finale is an example of TRUE genius and I am looking forward to next season when people start choosing to tune into it over GA.

  31. Lexi on May 18th, 2007 2:54 pm

This show has always been a crock of shit; people are just now starting to realize it. I can’t wait for next season when GA’s ratings plummet and The Office regins supreme. The Office season finale — now THAT’S how it’s done!

  32. Mannie on May 18th, 2007 3:10 pm

I watched Grey’s last night and for the first time ever, fell asleep halfway thru the episode. The season finale episode at that, the one that is supposed to be SO good that you don’t realize the hour went by already. I woke up a few times, but fell right back asleep.

  33. Chief on May 18th, 2007 3:29 pm

Grey’s lost me at the 1) Prom and 2) point where they stopped the storylines with the patients…I have no connection with these characters and therefore nothing invested in their plight.

  34. CrazyGringa on May 18th, 2007 3:35 pm

And here I thought I would be the only one who thought Grey’s finale sucked. I was thinking that maybe I had set the bar so high since I had just finished watching The Office finale. But no, Grey’s just sucked.

  35. Theresa on May 18th, 2007 5:22 pm

Finally a review of the finale that agreed with me! Every other review I read today raved about how emotional and wonderful it was. No, it wasn’t!

I was BORED with last night’s episode and that’s sad since it was the season finale. I kept checking the clock waiting for it to end.

And I wanted to smack Izzie when she started professing her love. Shut up already – you are so selfish!

Anyway, thanks for the great review!

  36. Meredith on May 18th, 2007 7:10 pm

My thoughts EXACTLY!!!! I was so disappointed. Usually when I watch Grey’s, I wish it was longer but last night I felt like time was dragging by. The way they did everything was just God awful.

And let me echo sentiments of the other posters by saying that perhaps I was so spoiled by the wonderfully written, hilarious, beautiful, poignant finale of the Office that I was just ruined for Grey’s from Act 1?

  37. Diddlee on May 18th, 2007 10:07 pm

Although it’s difficult to pick the worst or most cliched moment of the episode, I can’t help but concur on the Bailey situation. The sole reason she didn’t get chief is because the theme of the episode was to make everyone miserable, and that really leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I guess they decided to go this route instead of something even more soap opera-y like having her son die because she wasn’t home to take care of him. Still sucks.

  38. Melanie on May 18th, 2007 11:26 pm

Funniest line goes to Sandra Oh, “Mama took my eyebrows”. It was not a great episode. Predictable, boring, very dark. I am over Meredith and her issues. She needs to grow up. Izzie needs to clamp her mouth shut. Enough is enough, he’s married. Burke is a jerk. Here’s hoping next season is lighter and brighter.

  39. JD on May 19th, 2007 12:05 am

seriously Thank the lord for THE OFFICE and CSI because if grey’s was the only finale I had going for me last night I would be devastated. GMMR you nailed it with this review

  40. lisa on May 20th, 2007 8:45 pm

I’m really dissapointed to see George failed. And He ‘s still with Callie? Why Why ???? Anyone please come to http://www.dreamtobeslim.com or http://www.adeniumshop.com

  41. spacyz on May 21st, 2007 10:23 am

I actually wasn’t disappointed in the finale because it was predictable. I was disappointed because it was so depressing. There wasn’t anything fun about the episode, and every couple ended up in a bad place, except for the chief and his wife who had to go through a miscarriage to get back together.

  42. OfficeFan on May 27th, 2007 9:08 am

This season my interest in Grey’s anatomy has been slowly diminishing. For one thing, there were so many recap episodes, that by the time a new episode actually aired, I’d lost track of what was going on in the show. Second, the show has been trying to add elements of different genres and is failing miserably. The show began as a drama but began making the personalities stronger and more differentiated (typical of comedies) as well as adding more bizarre patient cases to make the show more “medical”. The show, however, cannot be at all realistic in a medical sense because real doctors do not typically behave like a bunch of 13 year olds. The immaturity of the characters also takes away from the “would be” dramatic moments because it is difficult to empathize with someone who reminds you of the annoying girls who sat in the back row of algebra class. As far as comededic entertainment goes, if you’d like a good comedy/medical show, watch Scrubs. As someone previously comented, the Office will be on at the same time as Grey’s next fall. No question as to which one I am going to watch!
