GMMR's TV Mix CD: Vol. 1 - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

GMMR’s TV Mix CD: Vol. 1

May 28, 2007 by

Sometimes I’ll be driving in my car and I’ll hear it, and it brings me back. It’s that one song that will forever be equated with that special TV moment. You know what I’m talking about, right? When you hear it you are just brought back to a place and time and it stirs up all kinds of memories.

Well, I thought I would share just a few of my favorite TV-music moments, and then ask you to share a few of yours. When I could find it, I included a link to the scene so you could relive the moment. There were countless to choose from, but here are just a handful to get us started – I didn’t even begin to scratch the surface, but I plan on adding to it and if you all like it, maybe we could add more TV Mix CD’s in the future.

Title: “Hide & Seek”
Artist: Imogen Heap
Show: The O.C.
The OC, Imogen Heap The haunting “Hide & Seek” was featured twice during S2’s “Dearly Beloved”. We first heard it during the funeral procession for Caleb Nichols, and then later it was the song that broke through the moment Marissa shot Ryan’s brother Trey. “Hide & Seek” was used just this past season on an SNL digital short (‘Dear Sister’), a parody of The O.C.’s infamous shooting scene.

Title: “Daydream Believer”
Artist: Marybeth Maziraz
Show: Dawson’s Creek
Pacey & Joey, Stolen Kisses Marybeth Maziraz made many musical contributions to The Creek during its run, but none more important than her beautiful remake of The Monkees “Daydream Believer.” For me, whenever I hear that song I can’t but think of the moment that Joey & Pacey finally realized they couldn’t deny their feelings for each other…you remember, it was at Aunt Gwen’s during “Stolen Kisses”. As Dawson’s Creek is my favorite TV show of all time, there were many other memorable music moments. Runners up include the theme song,”I Don’t Want to Wait” by Paula Cole, Decisions – “I’ll Be” by Edward McCain, Beauty Contest – “On my Own” from Les Mis, and “Fall from Grace” by Amanda Marshall

Title: “How to Save a Life”
Artist: The Frey
Show: Grey’s Anatomy
Meredith and Derek, Grey’s Anatomy Ok, so I don’t equate this song with a specific episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” but rather with that awesome montage that played as the teaser for S3. I remember laying on my bathroom floor, crying for hours after I saw that video. Oh wait, that was Izzie. But I did shed a few tears. The emotion of that song/video never left, and so when The Frey took the stage to perform “How to Save a Life” during the ABC Upfronts earlier this month, well let’s just say that it got very dusty in there. Another teary Grey’s song is “Breath” by Anna Nalick which was used brilliant during S2’s post-Super Bowl bomb episode. Come back to me Grey’s Anatomy…make me cry again in S4.

Title: “Islands in the Stream”
Artists: Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers
Show: The Office
Jim Halpert & Michael Scott, Email Surveillance An important musical moment in my life. “Islands in the Stream” marked the very moment that my crush on Jim Halpert turned to true love. The minute he picked up that mic to sing along with Michael I was done. Over. For a show that typically doesn’t feature a lot of music I had a number of choices to go with for The Office. Others included, The Dundies – “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John, The Initiation – “Lovefool” by the Cardigans, The Convict – “The Ainbowray Onnectioncay” and pretty much any of the songs sung when the Dunder Mifflinites broke out into song.

Title: “At This Moment”
Artist: Billy Vera & the Beaters
Show: Family Ties
Alex and Ellen, Family Ties I remember it like it was yesterday. Alex and Ellen slow dancing and finally kissing…right before Ellen takes off and Alex finds out that she accepted her boyfriend’s marriage proposal. I like to think that “At This Moment” was the first song that Tracy Pollan and Michael J. Fox danced to at their wedding. Who knows…but wouldn’t that have been sweet? (Why am I nervous that some of you are so young you might not have ever seen Family Ties).

Title: “We Used to be Friends”
Artist: The Dandy Warhols
Show: Veronica Mars
Kristen BellI guess this would make sense that the theme song to Veronica Mars would remind me of Veronica Mars. But every single time “We Used to be Friends” finds its way to my iPod it’s impossible for me not to rock out.”Come on now sugar, bring it on, bring it on” This song IS Veronica Mars, and although the show is no more, the song will live forever (damn, now that’s poetic…lol). The other VM song that I love is the haunting “See My Friends” by Gravenhurst, which was the song that was playing when Beaver Cassidy committed suicide.

Title: “Lady”
Artist: Lenny Kravitz
Show: Alias
Sydney BristowI’ll be honest with you. I can’t remember if this song was actually featured during an episode of Alias or not. I do know this it was the promo music for S4. The music would start and we would see a montage of Sydney Bristow doing her thang…which usually meant kicking someone’s ass. Ladies, if you are ever looking for a workout song to get you inspired on the elliptical, this is it, and if you are looking for inspirational in general then just check out Jennifer Garner’s body in that video. Dayum.

Title: “Every Breath You Take”
Artist: Sting
Show: Ally McBeal
Calista Flockhart and Robert Downey Jr.Of course the ultimate stalker song is on my list. But you may be surprised to know that “Every Breath You Take” doesn’t stir up images of Krasinski, Dohring, Vartan or any of my TV boyfriends…nope, I think of Calista Flockhart. Ally McBeal was known for having great musical moments and even greater musical guests. But in my book nothing about beat Robert Downey Jr’s duet with Sting in honor of Ally’s birthday. Incredible.

…clearly I haven’t even made the tiniest dent, but I got us started. Add your TV musical moments below. And if you can, tell us the name of the song, the artist, the song, and the episode (if it’s relevant)…just in case someone wants to go download it or something.

I don’t know about the rest of the folks, but I definitely remember Family Ties. 🙂 Loved it!

As a devout Alias fanatic I should know whether or not Lady was played during the show but I just can’t remember. I don’t think so but don’t quote me on it.

The song I remember from Alias (actually, I remember a lot more than one but this one gets me every time) is Here Comes The Flood by Peter Gabriel. They played it during Diane’s (Dixon’s wife) funeral.

Something I’ve noticed that I do a lot is when I hear a new (or new to me) song, oftentimes I’ll think, “Man, that would have been really good during Felicity!” That show was definitely perfect for some great music.

Also, Joan of Arcadia…I always think of the show when I hear One Of Us (the theme song) but the song that makes me smile is Celebration…Grace and Luke’s song. 🙂

Ok, as is obvious I love both tv and music so I could go on and on. But I think I’ll spare you. 😉

OMG this is awesome. I so know what you mean about those musical moments. I have so many. I’m going to go with one from AmericaI think this may be cheating, but I really loved when Elliot Yamin sang “Home” by Michael Buble. I had never heard of the song before that night so when he sang it it was new to me. Now whenever I hear that son I picture Elliott on the Idol stage. But I guess that doesn’t really count.

    Song: “If Nobody Cared”
    By: Nickelback
    Show: Heroes
I loved the promos for the second half of the season that featured this song. It seemed so fitting for the show. I always imagine Claire jumping off that water tower or whatever that thing was in the premiere episode.

I couldn’t find the promo but this is even better: Heroes Music Video

Love both the songs you mentioned Sus and Hotel. I think Alias had such great music. I don’t hear a lot of it on the radio so I didn’t include it.

Hotel – sorry I accidentally erased your comment at first and posted it as my own. I just edited it to make the URL you provided a link to the Heroes music video. An awesome vid by the way.

  4. Sara on May 28th, 2007 9:27 am

Sarah MacLachlan’s “Full of Grace” during the last part of Buffy season 2’s stunning episode, “Becoming P.2” when Buffy has had to kill Angel and is getting ready to leave town. Sarah MacLachlan can be a bit over the top sometimes, but here it totally worked and broke my heart….I still get a little teary when I think about it!

On a lighter note, Something Happens “Momentary Thing” really brings me back to Logan and Veronica’s first–and breathtaking–kiss on Veronica Mars. Loved it!

  5. SaraPMcC on May 28th, 2007 10:46 am

I remember that scene from “Family Ties,” of course. People really don’t remember that? I had to watch it after reading that; that’s definitely one that makes me think of the show when I hear it on the radio. I can’t think of anything else right now, except maybe the Hawaiian version of “Over the Rainbow” when Marc Greene died on “ER.”

  6. Jonathan on May 28th, 2007 11:00 am

My favorite is from Veronica Mars. “I Hear the Bells” by Mike Doughty is playing during Logan and Veronica’s ‘Epic’ scene at the alternaprom from ‘Look Who’s Stalking’

  8. Tanya on May 28th, 2007 11:20 am

    Awesome topic.

“Late at Night” by Buffalo Tom on My So-Called Life. The high school hallway, when Jordan Catalano holds Angela’s hand.

“Sway” by the perishers during Logan & Veronica’s dance, on Veronica Mars of Course.

“Where the stars go blue” by Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Galeotti from One Tree Hill

“Wild Horses” by the Sundays. From Buffy the vampire Slayer, during her dance with Angel at the Prom.

“Goodbye to You” by Michelle Branch (from Buffy) when Tara leaves Willow

“How am I supposed to live without you?” I think of Zach and Kelly breaking up on Saved by the Bell .

“Juliette” by Vanessa Daou. From Dawson’s Creek when Joey shaves Pacey.

“This years love” by David Grey. When Pacey and Joey get back from their summer at sea.

(and booo! to the DC people who changed up all the music on the DVD’s!)

  9. KC on May 28th, 2007 12:19 pm

The episode of Scrubs where Dr. Cox’s brother-in-law dies of cancer, and he doesn’t get it until the end…the song that plays when he figures it out is Winter by Josh Radin. That episode will forever stand out in my mind because of that song.

  10. Liz on May 28th, 2007 12:20 pm

“Battleflag” by Lo Fidelity AllStars when it played in the episode of ER where Lucy and Carter were stabbed. I still get chills whenever I fear it.

  11. Carli on May 28th, 2007 12:38 pm

For ALIAS, I always think of Coldplay’s “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face”. It’s the Spy!Sex!Song! 🙂

And now when I hear any version of “All Along the Watchtower” I immediately think of Battlestar Galactica.

  12. Mosby on May 28th, 2007 12:48 pm

Wow GMMR…great list. You were not kidding when you said this was going to be great!

Islands in the Stream if of course at the top of my list there 🙂

The terrible thing is, I heard a Beegees remake of that song and still jumped right back into the Michael/Jim mindset.

    hah.

    Have a great Memorial Day!

  13. Beckylooo on May 28th, 2007 1:24 pm

Top ‘o my list is Breathe Me by Sia from the Six Feet Under series finale. I’d argue the best series finale ever made.

Sorkin went and killed Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujiah” for me. Now everytime I hear it I think of CJ crying in Times Square in “Posse Comitatus” There’s actually a whole bunch of brilliant musical West Wing moments… YoYo Ma and the Bach in G Major from “Noel,” “I Don’t Like Mondays” by Tori Amos in “20 Hours in America” OH! And CJ “singing” “The Jackal” in.. I can’t remember which eps, season 1, I think.

And as far as The Creek (I always lovingly refered to it as “Pacey’s Crack”) HOW!? do you leave off Joey singing “I Want You To Want Me”!? I miss that show.

  14. Clare on May 28th, 2007 2:05 pm

    Hey great tunes GMMR !
*sigh* Larry and Sting singing Every Breath you Take…. unbelievable. That is my ultimate weakness, a man who can sing. Man, I loved Larry. Also from Ally McBeal, I have to recommend …may fave love song of all time, Vonda Shepard’s version of I Only Wanna be With You.

  15. natasha on May 28th, 2007 2:09 pm

To add to Beckyloo’s West Wing list, “Brothers In Arms” by Dire Straits from Two Cathedrals. Incredible song, incredible scene.

  16. uggy on May 28th, 2007 2:31 pm

    Love the Topic.
How about an old fav Roswell- Dido ‘Here With Me’ Not only was it used as the Openeing credits but featured in the final episode for season 1. Here’s the openeing credits from Season 2 that shows some Fan Favorites.
Tess= Now Claire on Lost~ Emilie DeRavin, Izzie- Now Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy~ Katherine Heigl and the Guys are just so easy to look at… 😀

  17. Jon on May 28th, 2007 3:13 pm

I know that Grey’s Anatomy used it first, but Scrubs used “How To Save A Life” much better. And everytime I hear that banjo opening from “Superman” by Lazlo Bane, it reminds me of Scrubs and how awesome this show has been to me.

Also, Michael Buble’s version of “You Don’t Know Me” was the first song I heard on the first episode of How I Met Your Mother that I managed to catch, and put the show over the top for me.

Ooh, ooh, ooh…”Battersea” by Hooverphonic. It’s the song that closed the first and final episode of Third Watch. Ahh, memories.

  18. Christina on May 28th, 2007 4:10 pm

    Hey, hey!

I agree with the Fray’s “How to Save a Life” but I think of it more with the episode of Scrubs (I think it’s called “My Lunch”) when Dr Cox has killed 3 patients with his mistake. That moment rocked!

Grey’s has this thing they do when they take a few songs and artists from Scrubs…it makes me laugh when that happens, you just start to realize how similar the two shows really are (except Scrubs would never try and lead you to believe that they were going to kill off JD in the third season..)

  19. Diddlee on May 28th, 2007 11:35 pm

    Fantastic topic.

U2’s “With or Without You” will always make me think of Ross and Rachel in the rainy Central Perk.

  20. Jon on May 29th, 2007 1:42 am

i completely agree with you on the ally mcbeal sting/robert downey jr. take on “every breath you take.” i remember watching that episode and seeing them sing together and i still remember it six years later.

  21. Jon on May 29th, 2007 2:01 am

also, i’m not that big of a fan of buffy but i remember one episode from like 1999 where there was a school dance and they played “lucky” by bif naked. i would have never listened to that song if not for that and i love it now.

  22. fancynewbrookly on May 29th, 2007 2:39 am

HA! As i speak the radio are playing ‘With or Without You’ by U2 and i’m at my desk laughing my head off as ‘Faces of Scranton’ plays through my head. “GREAT SCOTT!”

  23. jenjen on May 29th, 2007 5:41 am

I always remember that I first heard Damien Rice on Alias. The scene when they were saved from the Korean firing squad, they played the song “Delicate”. I think I downloaded the whole album that night.

  24. Lisa (aka lmr722) on May 29th, 2007 8:56 am

Hey GMMR, love this topic! It is so coincidental in that I’ve caught some recent eps of one of my old fav shows, Wonder Years, recently. Candidly there are so many as the show had an amazing soundtrack of oldies. A personal favorite of mine is when the kids talk the dad into getting a new car and at the end they’re sad to see the old one being towed away as Neil Young is singing “Long may you run.”

Totally am on board with the Family Ties one – one of the most romantic moments and couples ever.

And last but not least, one for The Office. It’s the only time they’ve overlayed a song onto the ‘documentary’. It is Elton John singing “Tiny Dancer” as Jim watches Pam pull away with Angela at Chili’s in The Dundies.

  25. Mannie on May 29th, 2007 10:04 am

One of my favorites (that wasn’t mentioned anyway) was from Dawson’s Creek also.

    Title: I Do
    Artist: Jude
    Episode: Home Movies (#304)

It’s from Home Movies when Dawson and Joey are watching the movies Dawson found. I love Joey and Pacey, but there was a time I loved Joey and Dawson as well. When this episode went off, I had to go buy Jude’s CD and still listen to that song from time to time. I can’t find a link to that scene, but if you can, feel free to add it. I think I’m going to have to go buy season 3 of Dawson’s Creek soon.

  26. macolly on May 29th, 2007 10:20 am

    Love this so much..

I thought I was the only one in America who remembered and still associated At This Moment with Family Ties. Glad to see that there are others out there.

And one that I think must make a list is the Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” for House.
    Nothing sums up House better.

I wouldn’t call this a “favorite” TV moment, but it will always be very memorable for me. How many of you watched the earlier years of ER? If so, you’ll likely remember the episode where Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) finally loses his battle with brain cancer while with his family on his final vacation in Hawaii. In a touching scene, his quite messed-up teenage daughter gives in to her emotions and puts her headphones on her ailing father to hear “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo`ole. (The song he had sung to her as a child). It continued to play into the following scene, when we realize Dr. Greene had passed away. Oh my goodness, I have never been so emotional over ANY other television moment! My good friend played the same version of this song as the “father/daughter” dance at her wedding. I teared up . . . but not because of the dance.

  29. Scooter McGavin on May 29th, 2007 10:20 pm

The greatest song placement of the past twelve months is easily “What’s Left of Me” from Nick Lashey from Veronica Mars. It is a reaity that a show could take an unlistenable song and actually make it enjoyable. It has totally gone into my kareoke playlist since.

Scrubs has had it fair share of memorable musical moments including:

Dreaming of You – The Coral

    S2E10

    Overkill – Colin Hay

My favorite TV-Music moment of all time has to be from Alias, which had so many great music movements. In season 1 episode 4 A Broken Heart, Syd broke down and called Vaughn and they met on the Santa Monica Peir and playing in the background was “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. Also I remember “River” by Joni Mitchell when Syd confronted Jack in the rain about Christmas, I think, in season 2. Ah! Now I really miss Alias!

Another Grey’s moment was “Grace” by Kate Havenevik in the last season finale when Mer and Der finally got together again.
