SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? Nope.

May 31, 2007 by

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. With enough Captain and Cokes I think I’m the world’s best dancer. Unfortunately, it seems that more than a few people in L.A. and Chicago also enjoy the Captain…so much so that they actually drank their way into thinking they were good enough to audition for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. There were some doozies last night.

Here were just a few highlights of last nights episode:

The Return of Benji Schwimmer…
Benji Schwimmer with Kath of GiveMeMyRemote.com and Dan of DuckyxDale.comYes, S2 winner Benji (to the left with me and Ducky) was back and he brought all that damn energy with him. This time around he was there to partner with his lil sis Lacey as she tries her best to keep it in the family. Um, I meant the title. Little Miss Schwimmer did not disappoint. She was fantastic and I can see her going really far in the competition, well at least if she is as versatile in other dance genres as her brother and Cousin Heidi (who made it to the Top 4 last year). Speaking of, did anyone else notice how much Lacey looked like Cousin Heidi? Give the girl a blonde wig and throw her on a bench and call it a day. Nigel gave some great advice to Lacey – keep the facial expressions in check. Big brother Benji had the same problem with making exaggerated faces while he danced. Stop making the faces Laci and you might get a few votes your way. (Ducky has just posted some Lacey Schwimmer dance videos)

The Kid with No Bones…
WTF? Did you see that guy? He was a pop ‘n locker or whatever they hell they are calling it these days and he was amazing. I swear he had no bones in his body whatsoever. Shane Sparks was floored and said this kid was one of the best he has seen in a long, long time. He was a thrill to watch but I’m not sure he’s going to go far since he might be a one trick pony. Then again, we all thought that about Jailbait Ivan last year and he proved us wrong.

Check him out…

More after the jump…

The Kids with No Limbs…
Two amputees in one show? Beat that American Idol! Yes, two dancers competed last night, each of whom had lost a limb due to a tragic auto accident. First we met this perky blonde cheerleader-type (whose names I’m blanking on) whose arm was completely severed from her body during a car crash. Damn! She was a pretty decent dancer. During her critique Nigel pointed out that she had a prosthetic arm. Ducky and I rewound a bit and sure enough there it was. All three judges made comments as to how brave she was blah blah blah. Not to take anything away for this girl, but she was there to be critiqued on her dancing. She didn’t need to be patronized by the judges. In her post-audition interview with Cat she made that clear and I liked her a bit more.

If Nigel thought dancing with one arm was impressive then he must have loved Quincy. Quincy first auditioned back in S1 and returned to last night to prove to himself that he could still dance, despite having lost his leg in a motorcycle accident and just getting his metal, prosthetic leg 8 months ago. He’s not the dancer he once was but if you want to talk about perseverance then give Quincy a call.

The Kids with No Talent…
You have to wonder why some of these people would waste their days in line for hours and hours just to go in there and make asses out of themselves. I guess it’s just the prospect of fame and fortune. I mean look how huge Benji Schwimmer and the guy that one S1 have become. You can’t go a day without seeing them on a cover of a magazine…oh wait. Forget it.

There were some pretty bad auditions last night but I’m going to go with the Golden Mask guy as the worst. The self proclaimed #1 Jump Style dancer in the world (dude, it’s huge in Belgium). This guy learned his technique by watching videos on YouTube (as all good lessons are learned) and he was utterly ridiculous. The judges humored him (but really themselves) and put him through to the choreography round where he continued to show he has no talent. But the best was that he got all pissed when he got cut. Ha ha ha. I love that.

The Kid That Gave Me Nightmares…
Talk about a freak show. How about the guy that danced to honor of Anna Nicole Smith?! Yup, this complete nut job met Anna Nicole for about two seconds a few years back, yet was so touched he fought back (fake) tears when he was asked to talk about her. But lucky for him Anna Nicole was with him at the audition, and she still talks to him. How can one man be so lucky?

The Kid That Could Win It All…
During last year’s auditions we met Hok, a sick dancer who blew everyone away. Hok was a sure thing to move to the next round, but sadly being from London he didn’t have the proper visa to work in the states and he was cut. Well with his new work permit firmly in hand, Hok was back and even better than he was last year. His moves were insane and he put on one hell of a show. This guys is so off the charts good that if he can hold his own in the other genres he’s going to be the man to beat.

Damn we look cute with Benji! Who’s got the most makeup on though? If someone says me, I slap them.

I totally thought Benji’s sister looked like Heidi. And their dance, while not really sexy, was still really creepy. Even more so that they are bro and sis, and not cousins like last season. I’m wondering about the chick with one arm…will she be able to do partner stuff? I am happy Hok is back, he was great and the guy with no bones was cool, too. Don’t forget there is another ep on tonight at 9.

that pop and lock dude was crazy- the little snake thing he did grossed me out, but it was pretty freakin fantastic. i think i said it before, but i really can’t wait til the audition part is over. i think it is fun to watch some of these horrid people dance, but if i hear another horrible dancer say that they are an instructor, i’m going to scream. they remind me of my nieces former dance studio- the women running it couldn’t dance themselves, how are they supposed to teach?

Hok is great, and I really can’t wait to see how far Lacey goes. Unfortunately, I’m not sure she’ll win- when I see her and Benji dance, I’m always tuned in more to what he is doing. Hopefully, she’ll outshine her future partners.

kilwiggle7, I agree about Lacey (and I too was thinking the whole time how much she looks like Heidi). I think she was good…not sure because I was watching Benji. I was too busy crushing on Ivan last season to realize how adorable Benji is. It was great to see him again last night. But I was a little disappointed they didn’t ask him what he’s been up to…or did they and I blanked out?

I loved Benji proclaiming “I’m still America’s favorite dancer for a few more months!” I wavered between voting for Benji or Travis in the finals, but I’m glad I went with Benji. We need people with that kind of energy and ability to poke fun at themselves. I hope Lacey can show she’s versatile, too. It’s got to bite following in big brother and Cousin Heidi’s footsteps.

As to the guy with no bones, I’m thinking he’ll amke it to the Top 20. S2 had a popper — Ashlee — and she lasted a few rounds of the competition. I was really glad to see Hok. His story last year made me cry. Seeing his face when he showed Nigel the Visa — classic!

What about the hip hop girl Shane Sparks loved? I wasn’t impressed with her style, but loved her enthusiasm and I’m so glad she’s going to Vegas.

I only got to tune in for the last 40 minutes or so, but I turned on the TV right when the boneless wonder was on and my jaw just dropped right to the floor. He looks as if he’s literally made of elastic. I was just as blown away by him as the judges, but I’m wondering the same thing as you, GMMR; will he be able to handle the other genres, or is this the only dance style he can handle?

I have to say that I was most impressed with that girl from Grand Rapids, MI. I think her name was Yezzi. Her confidence and energy were just exhuberant and I’m happy to see that the judges looked beyond her body type and saw that she has real talent. Not every great dancer is built like a swizzle stick.

That girl outshined all the other skinny people in the choreography group and she deserved to move on to Vegas. She has a great attitude and an amazing presence and I really identified with her.

I have been dancing as a hobby for over 10 years, it’s gotten me through some really tough times in my life and I don’t exactly have what you would call a “dancer’s body”; but that has never stopped me and, not to sound conceited or anything, but I’m told by others in my classes that they enjoy watching me or following me when they need help with the steps. I guess if I had to be addicted to something, dancing is probably the healthiest and best choice. I just really love it, it’s something I do just for myself.

I also loved that Swing/Charlston couple. They were amazing.

i thought that lacey was the perfect mix of heidi and benji. she talked a lot like heidi and i think her face was literally the perfect combo of those 2 😀 i love her already (especially since that means heidi and benji will be in the audience a lot!)

  10. Motorcycle Accident on March 8th, 2009 11:29 pm

That’s pretty amazing, my neighbor was in an accident too with an SUV. Luckily it was just a side impact and his motorcycle skid as did he. It’s neat to see people achieve amazing feats like still dancing after such trajedies.

I say this because this was the only cab company that picked up the phone on the first ring.
What we can do is to really accept what we did while forgiving
that part of us that was unaware of what we were doing or how
it would impact other people; the part that just doesn’t always get it right. This was a live performance recorded by Dutch national television, 2 April 2011 (therefore it isn’t fully cough free), by four pianists: Elisabeth Bergmann, Marcel Bergmann, Sandra van
    Veen, and Jeroen van Veen.

I don’t know whether it is just me or if possibly everyone else encountering troubles along with your website. It appears like some of the written text inside your posts are running off the screen. Can someone else please give feedback and let me know if this really is happening to them too? This might be a issue with my browser because I’ve had this happen previously. Thank you
