Looking to find out who went home on tonight’s SYTYCD? Check out the results from tonight’s show here: Who Went Home on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? (July 23, 2009)
PREVIOUS POST
And you thought there was drama last night on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE! Tonight was very interesting as two couples I didn’t expect to see in the bottom three were dancing for their lives.
But first up was the group number choreographed by Tyce D’Orio. Tyce really loves infusing his dances with an African influence and tonight it was brilliantly done to a piece from the stage show of The Lion King. I wasn’t sure if I was going to love it at first, but I’ve watched it a few times now and I think it was brilliant. And am I crazy or was Cedric not in the routine? I looked for him each time I watched it but had no luck finding him.
Jessi Peralta is out of this hospital and back on the stage. As she didn’t perform last night, she is dancing for her life tonight (their unfortunate words not mine). Then again, about her solo Jessi said she planned on “killing it” so…But before she could put her heart on the line (that was all mine and bad) she and Pasha got to perform the Cha Cha they missed last night (watch it here). Let me tell ya, they were smokin’. We certainly got an abbreviated version of the dance last night with Pasha and guest-dancer Melanie. Jessi and Pasha were sexin’ it up on the stage.
Then it was time to send some people home. As Cat brought the couples to the stage in groups of two, Lacey & Kameron, Dominic & Sabra, Hok & Jaimie and Cedric & Shauna were told they were…safe. Yes, Cedric was safe (seems that speech last night was quite effective).
With those couples safe it left Danny & Anya, Jesus & Sara, Jessi, and Neil & Lauren dancing for their lives.
Each performed their 30 second routines, and based on the solos alone, I would send Anya or Lauren (they both sucked) and Neil home (I’m going to duck for cover now). But am I right?
Going home tonight are…
Jesus and Jessi.
Say what?! Jessi was fantastic tonight, both in her dance with Pasha and in her solo. Me thinks the judges have a little inside scoop on Jessi’s real condition and fearing for her health and the rest of the competition they sent her packing. But did they have to dismiss her like that?! It was cold and Jessi was NOT happy. And if her health is in fact fine then she should be bitter because she didn’t deserve to go home tonight.
As for Jesus, well they had to choose one of the boys, and he was the one to go. I thought Neil was a little less polished during his solo but the judges loved it so what do I know. Jesus gave a very emotional goodbye and I got a bit teary as well.
Sanjaya, um I mean Cedric, you better do nothing but dance and sleep for the next 6 days, because if you sent home two better dancers with nothing gained on your part you and I are going to have some words.
So next week we’ve got a new pairing: Pasha & Sarah…should be interesting.

Ouch! I don’t think it’s fair to compare Cedric to Sanjaya. Cedric CAN actually dance (by himself), just not with other people. Sanjaya couldn’t really do anything well, at all, really…
I agree, there has to be another reason to send Jessi home because she was easily the best of the women. Of course that wasn’t saying much because the others were just bad.
I am just annoyed because the judges seem to keep changing the rules. One week they say they send someone home because of their solo. Then the next they admit that a person did the worst solo but keep them around. Hey, if they want to just keep who they think will be the best dancer over time that is fine, but then don’t feed us the line that the solo’s are so important.
Jake – point taken. I meant the comparison to Sanjaya in terms of the audience voting to keep Cedric on the show when he is clearly being outdanced week after week by others.
Maybe I’m biased because I like Lauren, Anya and Sara but I didn’t like Jessi’s solo AT ALL! To me, it looked like someone doing hip-hop for the first time. I felt like I could’ve went out there and done that. With that said, her performance with Pasha was really good (even if the constant hair flipping got old after the third time). As for the guys…well, someone had to go. We know the judges love Danny (to me, he dances really well but I’d send him home on his attitude alone) and they seem to really be pulling for Lauren and Neil so Jesus was the only one left. I’ll miss him, though. Pasha and Sara will be interesting to watch. I hope Lauren and Neil get a Tyce, Wade or Mia dance next week. Enough with the frakkin ballroom!
what did jesus say that was bleeped out in los angeles? anyone hear it on the east coast before they butchered it on the west coast? the producers or the network very specifically cut away to a strange audience shot and dumped his mic out … and who was the african american guy in the audience who said ‘love you’? thanks for the info. perhaps jesus can respond himself? he is a class act. congrats and a long dance life for you, jesus. thanks for the big heart!
Sue – Not sure if Jesus said something or if the camera guys screwed up, but we had the same issue on the East Coast.
The guy in the audience was Jimmy who was send packin’ last week.
I have to say, the fact that Jessie’s problem was that she was dehydrated made me think that the judges assumed that she really couldn’t handle the rigors of the program, because she was certainly the best of the four girls. The other three were terrible! They call that dancing for their lives? They were waving their arms and walking around a little bit! That’s it!
I would have preferred to see Neil go home as well. He’s a great dancer, undoubtedly. All three of those guys are fantastic, beautiful dancers, but Jesus is a sweet guy and I think Neil seems like a bit of an ass.
Honestly, I think the judges are completely biased. I think these judges are terrible. I’m no dancing expert by any means – you’re not going to see me auditioning for SYTYCD any time soon – but I do have a solid 10 years of dancing experience, and I just flat-out disagree with some of the calls they make.
In conclusion, I am in love with Pasha.
I can’t find cedric in the group dance either. And i thought the 2 who went home tonight were the ones who most deserved to be there. Niel really did dance for his life though, even though i wanted him to go home. But whatevs. This show is addicting.
I cannot believe they let jessi go. I agree she did wonderfully tonight and it’s beginning to seem like the judges are hugely contradicting themselves. Not to mention, they keep making huge mistakes… keeping cedric, letting jimmy go.. And now keeping lauren over jessi. Yes lauren impressed me during auditions, but since the show began, she’s been extremely boring in all 3 styles… and her solo sucked. I think they’re trying to choose based on popularity, cedric being the main example, and if so, they’re going to get such a bad response to jessis departure. I loved her style and presence on stage and if she wasn’t in the hospital they would have been safe, no question. Long live STIFFJAZZ!!
Yeah, I am SOOO over Lauren after last night. She has not lived up to her promise.
I think they should have sent either Lauren or Anya homw. Both of their solos were so boring! I actually started dusting 10 seconds into Anya’s.
The guys were a little tougher. I would have sent Danny home because he seems so stuck on himself, but since the judges still want people to believe they base their decision on the solo performance alone (yea, right), they chose Neil. Wait! They didn’t. They chose Jesus. And that made me sad. He was such a class act and worked hard. Apparently the judges want this year’s Top 10 to be filled with primadonnas (yes, Lacey, I’m talking to you as well as Danny and Anya).
What happened to dancers with personality, like Ivan and Allison, Natalie and Cousin Heidi? I feel like this year we have a bunch of Ryans and that ain’t good!
And if the judges don’t ease up on Cedric, America might just name him their favorite dancer! People are funny. We don’t like the high and mightly telling us who to vote for.
Jesus said “Sh!t” when he started to choke up – I don’t know if that’s what they took out on the west coast version!?!
I was dissapointed that Jessie got sent home, her dance with Pasha was incredible and had she been able to perform they definitely would have been safe. I was glad though she didn’t hide her dissapointment, the judges made a huge mistake.
I find it funny they blame “us” for who goes home…I’m sure if a poll was done of the voting audience we would have had different results for the past few weeks.
HATE. I’m so with you, Kath. Jessi truly deserved to stay. Lauren DIDN’T EVEN DANCE FOR THE FIRST TWENTY SECONDS OF HER ROUTINE. Way to go, Nigel.
I’m fully over these idiot judges.
I can’t believe that Danny didn’t go home last night. I am glad that America rebelled and kept Cedric in the competition because when you leave it up to us that’s what we’ll do. When Danny started laughing because he was in the bottom three that’s when I would have sent him directly home. You can’t just expect because you’re a great dancer that everyone should love you. I don’t know where he got his attitude from, since Travis would never act the way he does on the show. Being from Virginia I will normally give my support to ANYONE that is also from my state, but I am actually embarrassed that Danny the asshat is from Virginia.
Add me to the list who thought Jessi should have stayed. She was certainly pissed.
I don’t know if this has been mentioned before but my husband and I think that Pasha, when he’s not smiling, kinda looks like Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) from the O.C.
Lauren sucks hard. Her solo was so worthless last night and I’m annoyed as heck that she’s still in this competition while Jessi was sent packin’.
I’m with the concensus here.. I reallllly liked Jessi. She has so much charisma and spunk! I really thought they were gonna send of of the other chicks home but gawd..they didn’t even give a REAL explanation..it was complete bs..
I was wondering what Danny was laughing at too..I didn’t think he was truly scoffing at the fact that he was in the bottom three.. I was soo rooting for him but ew.. now I’m going for Sabra.
[…] Here’s another site with comments on the results show. […]
It’s a travesty that Cedric was safe and Jesus ended up going home. Cedric got the sympathy vote from America, because he had the opportunity to give that mini speech. Jesus was also dancing to better his life (if you live in Paso Robles, your only job options are working in winery or tourist inns) so he could help others better their lives.
The reason why Jesus never got a chance to “be inspirational” was because he consistently delivered outstanding performances, week after week, by supporting his partners and dancing his heart out. He did well enough so that the judges never had to give him the “you’d better step up” talk, which has happened with Cedric every since the very beginning.
It’s ridiculous that Cedric still couldn’t pull off a routine meant to hide his lack of technique. This is about finding the BEST dancer, not forcing choreographers to be clever and hide a dancer’s shortcomings. I’ve never been so disappointed in this show until last night.
Absolutely shocked at the bottom three couples!
There was something else going on with Jessi I think. Can being dehydrated mess up your EKG? And didn’t she have to go to the hospital the week of the top 18 too? There seems to be more drama there. Otherwise I don’t think the judges would have just cut her like that (and so coldly). And her flippant attitude didn’t help either. I was on the fence about her, and last night her attitude was just horrible.
I agreed with the judges that all the girls’ solos were mediocre. Esp Lauren. Girl needs to step it up. Sara was awesome as usual but she needed to add in some cool tricks. And Anya was horrid. We know that ballroom dancers are capable of dancing solos too–remember Heidi?
The guys were superb. Neil and Danny were just technically more superior though Neil looked like he was just doing acrobatics and tricks rather than dancing. Danny had a nice combination of dance and technique but I so want to wipe that smug look off his face. What was up with his nervous laughter when he was put in the bottom 3?
Jesus/Chuy was fab. It showed that he had put a lot of work and thought into his solo and performance wise it was great. I agree with the judges that technically he was lower than the other two. It was just bad luck that he had to be up against him.
Which brings me to Cedric. Yes I am frustrated that he is still around, esp when better dancers get cut. But the show is looking for America’s FAVORITE dancer, not necessarily the best dancer. And Cedric obviously has an appeal to him (humility and graciousness) that others (Danny, Jimmy, Ricky) do not. And that’s why he got the votes. I think it’s ridiculous and unprofessional for other dancers to be mouthing off about that (like Jimmy’s exit interview).
These dancers have had such an amazing opportunity to be on this show, dancing for a national audience. No one should feel entitled to stay or shocked to leave. And they sure should be more gracious and prepare a goodbye speech like Jesus/Chuys! (yes that barb was aimed at Jessi–sorry all Jessi fans!)
This two week hiatus till the next show is going to kill me! I have a feeling that the judges might mix it up a bit now, esp with the events of the past week. We shall see!
I just made a long ass post analyzing who has gotten what styles and which choreographers if anyone is interested:
http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=512383
I think certain couples have gotten breaks, while others have been unlucky.
I’m just now watching the show on DVR.. at first I was outraged at Jessi leaving; she was by far the best female solo tonight (err.. last night?). And her tango- Oh my God! For a minute I thought she might actually be one of the finalists. I brought it up to a friend who has been dancing for over ten years. She explained to me that dehydration and heart problems are signs of an eating disorder, which are extremely common in the dancing world. So now my theory is that the judges recognized the symptoms for what they are and chose not to reward them.
Everyone’s opinions about all the girls routines being really bad I agree. However for Lauren, I know sickness shouldn’t be an excuse but she still had the flu and who knows she didnt have the strength and energy to choreograph a dance. But all of you have to agree that when she did start dancing it was really good, if she did that for the whole 30 seconds it would of been awesome. Also everyone knows that what she did yesterday wasn’t her, you have seen her do a couple solo’s before and same in Las Vegas. I think you should give her the benefit of the doubt.
Jessi is the one that normally pulls that stuff, so it was weird to see Lauren do it. You could tell she knew either she shouldn’t have or at least that it wasn’t as good as it could of been by the look on her face when she went over by Cat. I thought the actual dancing was pretty good and I definitely give her the benefit of the doubt and look forward to better things from her in the weeks to come. Sucks that it’s not on this week!
I agree, when she went over to Cat she said “Good job” and Laurens facial expression was like “yah right” or like you said her look told us it wasn’t what she wanted to do. Yes, and when she did dance it was very good. Same here I hope they get contemporary because it will definetley show what they can bring, and why they are in the top 14
Re: Cedric in the African-influence group dance. Odd that so many of us were looking for him within the group. Actually, I loved the dance & the music – by far my favorite group dance. Each time, I watched it I tried to identify the roles the various dancers had. Their attire made it hard to recognize some of them. I’m pretty positive I saw Cedric in the very back of the group, visible at back right when they first moved into the front-to-back lines about 3/4 through the number.
I agree, that little speech that Cedric gave saved his bacon big time
