BIG BROTHER Recap & Spoilers: Meet the Houseguests
July 5, 2007 by Kath Skerry
(WARNING! The following contains spoilers for tonight’s episode of Big Brother 8. If you haven’t seen it yet then watch it and then get your butt back here to discuss with us.)
Sorry that BIG BROTHER has taken over GMMR today, but I couldn’t possibly contain my excitement. I just finished watching tonight’s season premiere and hot diggity dog it’s going to be a fantastic season.
Tonight 11 BIG BROTHER houseguests were introduced and shared pleasantries while they got settled into the Alice in Wonderland themed BB8 house. What they didn’t know was that there were three remaining houseguests they had yet to meet who were lurking upstairs and watching their every move. Dun…dun…dun!! As it turns out, three of the original 11 houseguests had some unfinished business with someone from their past, and tonight they would be reunited with them.
But first let’s get to my first impressions of the first 11 houseguests.
- Kail – a mother of three who owns a few business but wants people to believe she’s just a real estate agent. Woo…secret identity. She’s going to irk me I think.
- Nate – an ex pro football player that…wait, what…I’m sorry I forgot what I was saying. I was too busy looking at this man’s fine body.
- Joe – I love my gays but Joe could be too much for even me to handle. This child loves the camera and being center of attention. Give the boy some downers and call me when he’s sedated.
- Eric – a New York boy who seems to be a lot of fun. But is he cut throat enough to stay in the house?
- Jameka – I can’t say that Jameka made a big impression on me this week. But laying low is one way to go far in the Big Brother house.
- Carole – a Senator’s daughter? Seriously? I’m assuming her father is serving his last term and won’t be running for re-election because no politician would allow his daughter to exploit herself on a reality show during an election year.
- Amber – a single mom and a cocktail waitress from Vegas…with some really bad hair. I’d make a joke that she looks like she’s from Revere but only Massholes would understand.
- Zach – I don’t know much about Zach yet but I might subscribe to the 24/7 feeds if only to see how he’s going to get his tall body settled on that little tiny bed. The visual is great!
- Danielle – Joe wasn’t kidding when he said she looked like Anna Nicole – the years she was skinny…and alive. Why do girls feel the need for fake platinum hair AND fake boobs? You really need both? She should go hang with Tessa from “Age of Love”.
- Jen – like, Jen, like likes to talk a lot like about herself. She’s one of these 20-somethings that like thinks she’s awesome because she dabbles in like 25 jobs, but like doesn’t understand that it’s like just because she like doesn’t have any like focus in like life.
- Mike – he paints and…well, that’s all I can remember about him this week. Listen, it was only an hour and Gay Joe took a lot of camera time. Better luck next week Mike.
Head of Household* Competition
Before the 11 original houseguests and their three rivals and future housemates are introduced we have our very first HOH (Head of Household) competition. It’s a simple True and False game that required losing teams to spin around on mushrooms until they fell off. Eric and Kail won and the three rival houseguests got to vote from their secluded room as to who gets HOH. They gave it to Kail (which pleased Eric to no end). If Kail knew how to play the game she should know that getting W1 HOH is not the best strategy. Oh well.
11 Down, 3 to Go
So with HOH established it’s time to bring all the houseguests together. Uh oh!
- Dick (or Evil Dick as he likes to be called) is the estranged father of houseguest Danielle. The two haven’t spoken in over two years. I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover but Dick looks like a Tommy Lee wannabe and brought enough Marlboro Reds along to open black market trade operation. We don’t know what happened between Dick and Danielle, but something tells me what one of his band buddies groped her in the back alley while Daddy Dick stood idly by. Oh and Dick, there is only ONE man worthy of being nicknamed “Evil” and that’s Evil Dr. Will – so step off buddy.
- Dustin is the ex of Gay Joe, and damn do these boys have some issues to work out. The two dated for some time and after Joe “immaculately conceived gonorrhea” (his words on national television, not mine) he decided to sabotage Dustin’s life. He “annihilated his friendships” and did “horrible things” to him. I mean how much can you hate each other when you show up no BB8 wearing each other’s clothes? Oh these girls are going to be at it, and I should know by next week if I love them or want to throw a shoe at them.
- Finally there is Jessica, who from here on out until she gets evicted will be known as Brainless Jess. See back in 7th grade or maybe even HS, Brainless Jess and Carol were friends. But one day, Carol…ugh, I can’t even say it, I’m too ashamed – don’t make me say it. Ok here it goes – back in the day, Carol borrowed $5 from Brainless and she never gave her the money back. Can you stand it? WTF?. I mean did Carol borrow $5 to buy a gun and shoot Jessica’s dog? That I can understand. There’s got to be more to their story.
So all the houseguests meet and all the fun is sucked out of the house and replaced with tension, and I mean serious tension. Oh snap. I’m already pissed I don’t have the live feeds.
America’s Player
Just before the Chen-Bot sends us on our way, it is revealed that Eric is America’s Player. We the home viewers get to control all of Eric’s actions in the house and play along from home. Although he could have been bummed that his freedom to play the game he wanted to was taken from him, Eric embraced being America’s Player and said that he is the first player in reality TV show history to have an alliance of 10M people. Do you want to be in Eric’s alliance? Absolutely I do. Right on Eric…I’m there with ya buddy!!
Tune in on Sunday at 8pm for more LIVE Big Brother!!
* If you are new to Big Brother and need any explanation as to how the game is played or why the Head of Household is important, then just leave a comment and let me know. I’ll be happy to explain.

Ok, I’m a Big Brother newbie, but needed something to watch this summer and everyone who talks about it seems to love it.
Joe? Needs to quit. Seems like he would be fun for the first 2 minutes and not much beyond that. How in the world did he date Dustin, who is way out of his league. And with Kail, it would be one thing to say that you don’t want people to get to the end and not want to give it to you because they would think that as a successful business woman she doesn’t need the money; and a different to totally buy into that idea yourself. She is seriously so full of herself.
Not much else to say about these people other than what you said. There seem to be way too many of them to keep track of right now. It gets easier, right?
I decided to give Big Brother a shot since you and Ducky seemed so excited about it on your podcast. I don’t really know much about the game, but I like the people in the house already. I don’t really like them but I’m going to love to hate them.
This show is quite a commitment, but I’ll go along for the ride.
mrs. jbk so glad you’re giving it a go! Stick with it and you will be damn pshycho addicted. The game explains itself in hideously repetitive details week after week so you will catch on. Don’t worry!
kath, I love that you referred to poor Amber as a girl from Revere and I did her as my hometown of Syracuse and New Jersey. Wow!
LOVE THAT BB8 is on! Life is good and I cannot wait to podcast about it!

Kath- I LOVE BB! I’ve watched since season 1, so I’m very excited to see that you’ll be covering it.
Summer has finally started.
I didn’t like Jen from the start. When they were going around introducing herself and Carole said she thought she was the youngest there at 21, Jen’s reaction was awful. I guess since she does so much (she’s the “fun” nanny to a 10 and 13 year old, do I even need to go there?) no one can compete with her.
I agree Joe is over the top. I might perfer Dustin. He doesn’t seem bad. I hope the “original 11” realize there are two sides to every story. Plus Joe tried to ruin Dustin’s life. Like they could trust him now. And Joe totally ignored “Evil Dick” when he went around the table to shake everyone’s hand. Even his daughter shook his hand.
I can’t wait to see what we get to make Eric do.
Oh, I almost forgot. Does anyone else hate that Pepsi commercial where everyone’s yawning? I hate that and it seems like it comes on all the time.
My least favorite HGs are Jen and Joe… Joe is just way to over the top for me. He aired his dirty laundry way to quickly and put Dustin at a disadvantage, in addition to himself… Jen says like, like 20 times a minute.. I can’t stand listening to her and her diary room made me cringe. I counted at least 6 times that she said it.
I really like how the entire cast is new this year- compared to last with the all stars. I also enjoy the fact that will and boogie aren’t there. It makes this season a whole heck of a lot more enjoyable. I like Janie but i’m kind of sick of her to be honest.
Dick has been a riot on the feeds. He’s been up all night cussing up a storm. It’s pretty fun. I won’t let out any more spoilers from the feeds.
(GMMR- I updated my email… )
Thanks for the update – I missed the first episode. Now I’ll never know their backstories! Oh wait, there’s GMMR to help me out 😉
Ducky had a cool note on Mike: he was the single guy on an ep of Gay/Straight/Taken.
Dick looks SO much like Tommy Lee, it’s scary! Joe is way too obnoxious for my liking. Nate’s fun to look at 😉 Julie Chen looks anorexic. Danielle looks closer to 30 than 20. Jameka cracked me up when she yanked Joe by the arm to get him to be her partner for HOH. It’s going to be fun controlling Eric this year. I can’t decide if I like him or not. To me, he seems like the type of guy that thinks he’s cool but he’s really not.
Here is a site that you can read about what is going on in the BB house updated by people who get the live feeds.

I was nervous I wasn’t going to enjoy this season – but I thoroughly enjoyed the episode last night!! Of course they are mostly young and single, but that does give the most drama. I was absolutely giddy watching it !! Love the twist with Eric – and he seems like he will play the part well. Can’t wait! 🙂
I love Big Brother, and this season looks like it won’t disappoint!
Evil Dick is horrible. Actually, I refuse to call him Evil Dick because that’s what he wants me to do. The things he was saying about his daughter on national television were terrible. And did you hear hear saying that at one point they didn’t talk for five years, and then started talking again but he was a jerk so they didn’t talk again for two years? Now, I know there are two sides to every story but this estrangement seems to have started when Danielle was like 12 years old. Obviously, he is not a good father. Poor Danielle, being stuck in a house with your jerkwad Dad!
As a fellow Masshole…I am laughing because when I saw Amber I thought she looked straight out of Re-veah too! And is “Evil Dick” the Tommy Lee-looking guy or something Gay Joe got? Could someone put Julie Chen in a food challenge…as in challenge her to eat something? Her arms are a little scary. Oh, congrats on the press your site is getting – I think you made the Boston Herald twice last week, I saw mention in Time Magazine and some other places too!!!!!!
whys is everyone in their 20’s except for Dick and Zach? and Zach isn’t much from that age also. where are the older players? i don’t want this to become more of a soap opera or another real world and lose the game aspect of it. i dont care to see the after dark and hookups during the game.
