Victoria Beckham is in America…Uh Oh
July 17, 2007 by Kath Skerry
I’ll admit it. I watched Victoria Beckham’s reality show last night. I only turned it on to see if we were going to get some nice moments with Becks, but then I stayed glued to the TV for the full hour. You all know the car wreck analogy…well it was something like that.
The footage, originally intended for a reality show and then used for this one hour special, showed Mrs. David Beckham preparing for her family’s big move to the U.S.. She was trying to get herself acclimated to her new surroundings in Beverly Hills, find a home for her family, and get a taste for their new life in the States.
If this special was intended to introduce The Beckhams to the United States so that we would love them as the Brits do, I’m not sure it quite hit the mark. Too often Victoria came off as a self-centered, trampy twit to whom the rules just didn’t apply. If I’m being honest, she wasn’t as loathing as Paris Hilton but she was close. Personally I couldn’t help but wonder what life lessons she was teaching her children. But hey, she’s a celeb so I guess I shouldn’t expect anything different.
There were a few moments when I thought Victoria seemed pretty cool and almost likable. Most of those times were when she spoke of her children and her husband. When looking for houses she was quite concerned with the safety of her kids (which ruled out more than a few houses in the Hollywood Hills). She was also quite amusing when she sat down with the oh so obnoxious Perez Hilton and called him on his sh%# for talking trash about her. Perez has no problem ripping people a new one on his site, but come face to face with them and he stutters and whimpers like a little bitch. During their encounter, Victoria gave a wink wink to her image in the press. She laughed that she would never want to shatter he image by being photographed while eating or smiling.
The truly frightening moments of the special centered around a Beverly Hills welcome luncheon thrown by some of the Beckham’s new neighbors. These ladies of leisure were a bunch of cackling, drunken floozies who had so much plastic surgery that I opted to leave NBC in HD and go to the regular station as a favor to my eyes (although I suppose the real favor would have been turning off the show completely). One woman wasn’t content enough to just look like an (expensive) train wreck on national television, she had to embarrass herself further my doing an obnoxious dolphin call. WTF? Victoria was fake enough to make them think she enjoyed their company. She even provided voice over’s telling us so. Yeah right, you know she went back and trash talked each and every one of them.
The special ended with David Beckham’s arrival in the U.S. this past Thursday. The whole episode teased about the exclusive footage of the arrival. Of course in the end it ended up with two seconds worth of footage that I could have just as easily seen on TMZ. With no more chance of seeing Becks I turned off the TV. Now a few hours later, I still have no idea what to make of this woman. I’m just glad this was a one shot deal and that her reality show didn’t get picked up for a full season. That I just couldn’t handle…or could I? I’d rather not think about it.

I missed the beginning of this show. I only turned it on so I wouldn’t miss Age of Love, so I tuned in when she was talking to Perez Hilton. I thought she said some pretty funny stuff, but I have a warped sense of humor. I don’t think I’d want to see a whole season of it, but one time was ok.
I thought it was crazy that she wanted to buy David a “welcome to America” present so she put the doll in the car so he wouldn’t know where she had been shopping, but allowed the cameras to go to videotape it. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?
Okay, I watched it. I am not proud to admit it, but I watched it. And, to be honest, it was not nearly as bad as I had expected. She is well aware of her reputation as a pouty lipped, spoiled, fashionista, and I think this show actually did help her shed a bit of the image. She has a sense of humor, she loves her family, and you know what? If I had her money, I’d probably be shopping all the time, too. I agree that an hour was much more tolerable than a season (unless, of course, her husband was going to play a much larger role in the show 🙂 And as much as she talked about her children, I admire the fact that they try to keep their kids out of the lime-light, except for the occasional shot walking to and from the car. Overall, not that bad. Sure as hell beat Britney’s reality show!!!
I watched too… and she actually seemed way more down to earth than I would have assumed. (I mean purely based on her photos.) I think its pretty normal to be that obsessed with how you look when you have that many photogs following you at all times!
I was blown away by the number of photogs she had greeting her upon her arrival in the US. I could not imagine how terrible it must be to be greeted like that after flying for 10 hours.
I don’t know if it would have worked as a full-time reality show. Maybe… especially if we got to see David all the time. I think it should be illegal to be THAT hot.
I LOVED IT. I loved her “Aren’t houses normally built from the ground up?” and her insanely awkward baseball toss. I also loved her confusion about the kids on the little league team—“I saw all of these little people and thought, ‘How far away are they?'”[pause] “They were actually quite close!”
She’s clearly obnoxiously high maintenance and she doesn’t know how to duck, cover and hold, but I love her anyway. Welcome to America, Posh! You’re hilarious! Stay away from the dolphin lady!
I didn’t realize this was reduced to just a one hour special. I actually really enjoyed it, as embarrassing as that is to say! I would definitely keep tuning in if it were a full series.
I don’t think I like it as much as others, but it says a lot that I didn’t hate it.
Thanks Melissa! The line about houses being built from the ground up was one I loved that I forgot about. The other one was something about being afrain people would see her as a twit.
I only had this show on because nothing else was on and I was also waiting for Age of Love, but I have to say I was entertained. While I rolled my eyes a lot, there were a lot of funny parts too. She was even likable at times. I liked when the guy at the DMV said, “Victoria, I’m watching you,” because she was trying to get the answers to the driving test from her assistant and then she replied, “Bill, I’m watching you!” LOL
I actually thought it was alright. It was definitely a good hour of entertainment. After it ended, it left me wanting to see more, but that’s just me.
I totally thought it was funny as hell – imho she seemed (relatively) down to earth for her particular position in life. I agree with other posters that I would TOTALLY be vain and practically live (or actually live) with my hair and make up team if I couldn’t step out of the house without the paparazzi following me. I also really liked that she was a bit of a smartass and quipy. The bit about the house and how she layed into Perez Hilton.
And? Most importantly she obviously adores her children and her husband. I don’t know about her kids, but I also adore her husband. Everything she was doing (for the most part) was to make their transition to a different continent as painless as possible.
If this were a half hour weekly series during the summer, it would be at the top my DVR priority schedule.
It may have been well worth it just to see the “Welcome to America” lunch. OMG, that was painfully hilarious to watch. The dolphin lady who was comparing herself to a mermaid? The old, botoxed broad rolling around on the floor? The “major” lipstick and hairdos on those ladies? The old, leathery bottle blonde who made the “To all the men in my life…may they never meet my husband” toast. Just watching Victoria suffer through that and then get itchy when they started talking about money. Soo funny. And yet, so sad that those women even exist.
I saw her on Access Hollywood the other day and they showed her a picture of herself smiling, and she thought she looked like a horse. She said “People ask why I pout all the time…that picture is exactly why.” Hard not to be wrapped up in looks when everyone is just waiting for you to take a bad picture so they can rip you apart.
I watched this last night and actually enjoyed it, too. I thought she came across as likeable but totally on a whole other level than most people. What I also found funny was that her American assistant showed up in a shirt that I also own and its from Old Navy. So her assistant was wearing a shirt that cost about $20 and I can’t even imagine how much the bathing suit Victoria was wearing costs. You could obviously tell that they were setting up all those funny situations for the show, I hardly doubt they would have went to the kids baseball game, had earthquake training, or dressed up a blow up doll to fool the paparrazi had there not been cameras.
I was a little embarassed to be watching it but I thought parts were very funny. “This house was built from the ground up.” or her concern that she might help the Dodgers lose if her 1st pitch was bad.
Did anyone else notice that one of the Lunch Ladies looked an awful lot like The Donald’s ex Marla Maples?
I wish she had stayed the semi-normal person she once was. I don’t think she is loved in the UK, more used as a comedy element.
I haven’t seen the programme (and never will!) but I can assure you most of us Brits loathe the Beckhams, especially the waste of oxygen called ‘Posh’!
I definately thought that was Marla Maples. Does anyone know for sure??? About the show, at least she was concerned with the viewers seeing her “knickers”. Listen and learn Brittney.
