GILMORE GIRLS Creator on Series Ending
July 24, 2007 by Kath Skerry
Unlike many of us, GILMORE GIRLS creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was not glued to her seat the night of the Gilmore Girls series finale.
When asked about the show’s finale at the TCAs, Sherman-Palladino offered this campy response:
“I didn’t watch it,” said Palladino, her head adorned with an ivory feathered stovepipe hat, her feet sporting boots that matched. “I think I just got very drunk that night and sat in a corner, and he (Daniel) read in a corner, and then we just got quiet and went to bed. I couldn’t watch it because it wasn’t my ending, it wasn’t going to be what I had in my head forever, and I was going to do something crazy, homicidal, suicidal, something with an ‘-idal’ in it.”
As for those infamous two words she had planned on ending the show with? Well, she’s not spilling the beans. But at this point there is no way that two words could possibly live up to the grandiose importance that Gilmore Girls fans have given them.

I love me some Amy Sherman Palladino. I think she’s brilliant and witty and awesome. However, I was incredibly pissed that her and Daniel left the show. And I feel equally pissy about this newest comment she made. It’s like, if you’re so weirded out and upset by the prospect of watching the show’s ending by another person, you should have stuck around to do it yourself!
Fortunately, I think if Gilmore Girls had to end, it really did go out well. I think David Rosenthal did a wonderful job wrapping things up and creating a heartfelt, but not sappy series finale.
That being said, I’m still interested in how ASP and Co. would’ve ended it and what those last few words were.
I think that The Palladinos forfeited any rights to complain about what happened to the show after they callously let down both the fans and the cast. I wasn’t always the biggest fan of David Rosenthal’s vision for the show, but overall, I was happy with the way things ended.
Yeah, I agree w/ the comments above. The Sherman-Palladino’s don’t really have any room to complain, I understand she didn’t have her creative vision or whatever, but she’s the one who dropped the show. Would she rather had the series end w/ her last episode!? Lore and Chrisduhpher together in bed? Yuck, what a gross thought.
I disagree. I think that Amy has every right to be upset. And I think there is a lot more that happend that we don’t know as to why they left. Plus, we have to give her ALL the credit because with out her we would not have our favorite show! I am still hopi ng for a reunion that we end it correctly!!!! Amy Sherman-Pallidino and her husband rock my world! 🙂
I have followed Gilmore Girls since season one and was a huge fan of the show. I think that ASP is one of the best writers on television and it is a shame that she would leave her fans, and fans of the show that she created, hanging out to dry. I don’t know exactly what led to her leaving the show for the final season, but I do feel she owes it to the fans to tell them how she had planned to end things.
I think the only two words she could possible have ended this show with would have to be “Thanks Mom” – still wish I knew what she had in mind though.
Hated to se the show END. My husband and I watched it faithfully. the show totally took me out of this world for awhile and into the life og “The Gilmore Girls” The show was utterly enchanting.
