My Last Day of Comic-Con

July 29, 2007 by

I feel like I’ve been away from GMMR forever! Today is my last day here at Comic-Con here in San Diego. It’s been a great time, but I have no shame in telling you that it’s been kicking my ass. I’m feeling the effects of it today, but I’m going to buck up and deal.

I’ve been to some really great panels while I’ve been here and I can’t wait to share the highlights and all the pics I took. Sadly, there were just some events that we were closed out of. We tried to get into line for the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and HEROES panels a good 5 hours before they began, and I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that there were at least 3,500 people in front of us. Again, this is 5 hours before the event even started. Not wanting to spend my entire day in line and chance not even making it in, we opted for some other, incredibly rewarding events (aka quality time with Lee Pace) – but more on that later.

So with all the chaos of this weekend, I definitely haven’t had time to blog like I would have liked to. But Ducky and I don’t head back to Boston until 9:30pm PST tonight, so we will definitely have some time to blog away at the airport.

Miss you all!

MOONLIGHT Over Dohring (Comic Con Update)

Cast of MOONLIGHT

Today was my first full day of my first Comic Con experience and it didn’t disappoint. If I weren’t so tired I would delve into details on all the panels I attended today, but I can hardly keep my eyes open so that might have to wait until tomorrow. But I couldn’t, in good faith, head to bed for the night without sharing some details from the first panel I attended today – MOONLIGHT. I have some really great pics of the cast that I’ll be posting soon, but I have to be up in four hours so I thought these pics would suffice for now.

So let’s get right to it – Jason Dohring. Need I say more? Jason Dohring, whom we all know and love loved as Logan Echolls on VERONICA MARS is returning to television in the CBS series MOONLIGHT. For those of you not familiar with the show, it’s about a private investigator who just happens to be a vampire. The pilot is being reshot right now, but if the extended promo we saw today is indicative of the show’s creative approach, then I think it’s going to be fantastic.

The Cast…
Alex O’Laughlin is Mick St. John- the oh so charming PI who struggles with his secret life as a vampire. This Patrick Demspey-esque Austrailian actor could just be the most talked about new face of the Fall season – well at least if the swooning ladies that were in the room at today’s Comic Con panel have anything to say about it.

There was some eye candy for the boys as well. Sophia Myles, an English-born actress plays Beth Turner, a reporter for an online website who may just have a secret history with Mick. Someone whose history with Mick is not so secret is Coraline, played by the beautiful Shannyn Sossamon. As it turns out, it was Coraline that turned Mick into a vampire when she gave him more of a love bite than he was expecting on their wedding night.

Brian White and Jason Dohring round out the cast. Brian, whom some of you may know from his roles on “The Shield” and “The Family Stone” plays Lieutenant Carl Davis, a cop who gets on Sophia’s good side by feeding her the leads she needs to get the story. But will Carl’s involvement with Coraline mean his days as a mortal are numbered?

Jason Dohring, Moonlight

And then of course is Jason Dohring. Jason, as you may have read here on GMMR, is the second person to play the role of Josef. In the original pilot, Josef was played by a man in his late 60’s, so we can expect that Dohring’s take will be completely fresh and new. Josef is a billionaire hedge fund trader by day and a booze lovin’ womanizing vampire by night. Having been on the Earth for over 400 years, Josef has played witness to a history that is beyond us all. I mean, how many people can be walking around the streets of Manhattan in 2007 and can claim to have been friends with Mozart back in the day? He must be a blast at cocktail parties (well you know, at least until he wants to suck your blood). Read more

Rob Thomas No Longer Miss/Guided

Rob Thomas No Longer Miss/Guided

VERONICA MARS creator Rob Thomas has decided to leave his position as show runner/executive producer for ABC’s new comedy MISS/GUIDED.  Citing “creative differences”, Thomas is out and has been replaced by Mark Hudis.

Fear not VERONICA MARS fans, Rob Thomas will be back to writing soon.  He has a development deal with ABC Studios.  Let’s hope Rob uses this unexpected downtime to write and publish the ending that we didn’t get to see on the series finale of Veronica Mars.

Speaking of VM, both Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring will be at Comic Con.  Veronica and Logan – how I’ve missed you.  Kristen will be their promoting her new movie “Fanboys” while Jason is their with the cast of “Moonlight”.  I hope to catch a glimpse of them both this weekend.

Lacey Schwimmer & Danny Tidwell – Samba

An encore performance of my favorite dance from last night’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Lacey Scwhimmer and Danny Tidwell performed a Samba routine choreographed by Season 2 Top Ten finalist Dmitry Chaplin.

(This danced needed a post of its own so I can keep rewatching it)

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Recap: Top 10 Perform

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get in a SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE recap before I left, but my flight is delayed a bit this morning so I thought talking a little dance was a good way to pass the time.

For the contestants making in to the Top 10, it’s a whole new ballgame (or ballroom, perhaps). Each week they will be given a new partner to dance with, and they are no longer competing as a couple, but rather on their individual dance performances. And their fate is now in America’s hands. The guy and girl with the least amount of votes each week will be sent home. Remember, SYTYCD is a search for America’s “favorite” dancer, not the “best” dancer, so the connection you’ve made and will make with the audience is key (I’m talking to you Tidwell).

Another change to the format tonight, is that each contestant will be performing a solo choreographed by Wade Robson. To make it an even playing field, the contestants will all be performing the same solo. More on this in a bit.

Before we get into each couple, a big holla to judge Mia Michaels. Woman you are fierce and in another life, I’d like to be you…only with a better haircut.

The newly formed pairing of Pasha Kovalev and Lauren Gottlieb kicked things off tonight with a hip hop routine by Shane Sparks. This was some crazy-good choreography. The beginning and the end were especially fantastic. Nigel likened it to the transformers, and that’s just what it felt like. Shane was worried about how ballroom dancer Pasha would handle the dance, but in the end his worries were unfounded. Pasha was really fantastic and proved what a great all around dancer he is. Lauren really stepped it up tonight. I’m still not loving her personality, but I can’t deny that she danced the hell out of the number. The judges all about loved it. (Check out their performance in the video below)

Lost Season 4 Spoilers from TCA

The TV critics who have the luxury of attending the TCAs (and please don’t tell me it’s not a luxury – try being denied) for the past few weeks were all up in arms this morning when ABC President Steve McPherson mentioned that there would be some new details about Season 4 of LOST announced at Thursday’s Comic Con panel in San Diego.  Seems the critics forget that the show lives and dies with the fans and not with critics…but don’t tell them that.  How dare ABC share details with fans of the show who are so diehard that they will pay for a ticket to Comic Con and then wait in line hours and hours just for the chance to make it into the panel. Right? [/end of rant]

Well ABC caved to the critics and spilled the beans early.

So what is this news that has caused such a stir?  Well to be honest, I wasn’t floored by it, but here it is…

BIG BROTHER Recap: The Power of Veto

BIG BROTHER 8 Recap

As I unintentionally spilled in a BIG BROTHER spoiler post earlier this week, it was indeed Jen who won the coveted Golden Power of Veto this week. Jen’s playing a good game when it comes to the competitions. She was HOH last week and took the POV this week. But that’s not the shocking part…the shocker would be that Jen wasn’t the most annoying houseguest this week. That honor went to Dick.

After winning HOH, Dick went on a massive power trip. He was flaunting the HOH in everyone’s face, and never let anyone forget that HE is calling the shots this week. Watching Dick play the game this week was akin to watching a bully in the school yard. It wasn’t enough for him to put Kail on the block, he had to torment her at every opportunity, taunting her about how she was a bad player and how everyone hates her. I’ve never been a huge Kail fan but I was pulling for her to smack Dick upside the head. Hey, if she’s going home anyway she should go out in a blaze of glory.

DAMAGES Premiere – Share Your Thoughts

Damages, Glen Close

The other day I posted my thoughts on the new FX drama DAMAGES.  I urged you all to tune in last night for the premiere, and I hope that some of you took the the to check it out.  I’d love to know what you thought.  Did you love it?  Hate it?  Even after all my reminders did you forget to set the TiVo?

Here are a few thoughts on last night’s episode from a few of my favorite columnists.

Maureen Ryan, Chicago Tribune
Damages” is really two things: an impressively constructed thriller and an intriguing, timely exploration of what people at the apex of society will do to hold on to their power. And that answer may just be: Anything. (Read more)

Joel Brown, MeeVee
At least in the early stages of “Damages,” debuting tonight on the cable channel, we’re supposed to be glad for heroes like the big-time litigator Patty Hewes, played by Glenn Close. But one of the things I like the most about “Damages” is that after the first two hours, I’m not at all sure Hewes will still be a hero when the first 13 weeks are over. (Read more)

Tim Goodman, SF Gate
But it’s Close who makes “Damages” a series to contend with. The actress saw in the material something to work with, a skin to put on. These are the kinds of roles that should attract any serious actor, not just women of a certain age. They’re telling good stories on cable – a lot of them in a complicated, adult manner. (Read more)

…and then there’s you.  Leave a comment and share your thoughts on DAMAGES.

What to Watch…Wednesday, July 25, 2007

I spent most of the work day yesterday counting the hours until I could head back to my hotel and watch SYTYCD…to bad it wasn’t on last night. But tonight is Wednesday (I checked the world wide web and it told me so – handy thing that it is). So yeah, I’ll be watching some dancing tonight and rumor has it that Wade Robson is going to play a big part in the show, so that pleases me to no end.

I’m a little behind on RESCUE ME, and since my Slingbox is having some technical difficulties it looks like I’m going to have to wait until I get back home next week to catch up (so don’t spoil me).

MeeVee RecommendsSo You Think You Can Dance
Hok and Anya are out, so we’re down to the final ten contestants, and everyone gets a new dance partner as we hurtle into the final stretch of competition. If you want to know who danced with whom this week as well as a little behind the scenes scoop from someone who attended this week’s taping, click here.

MeeVee RecommendsLast Comic Standing
The stand-up comics perform in the final round of the semifinals. Tom Arnold serves as a guest talent scout.
(this is the updated episode summary)

MeeVee RecommendsRescue Me
Tommy and Janet deal with revelations about the baby; Sean learns a secret that Mike has been trying to hide; the new probie (Larenz Tate) holds the guys to their agreement about doing no “probie” work; and Lou’s cousin Mike (Artie Lange) visits.

MeeVee RecommendsTop Chef
Andy Cohen presides over a reunion featuring series host Padma Lakshmi, judges Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and Ted Allen, plus past and present culinary contestants.

MeeVee RecommendsHot Ghetto Mess
BET is changing the name of their controversial show to “We Got To Do Better,” but it’s still a showcase for the worst aspects of African-American style and culture. If you love offensive stereotypes, tune in!

Talk Show Round Up…

Six Degrees of TV Fame Game

July 24, 2007 by

The chatter on GMMR has been pretty quiet lately. Where have you all been? In an attempt to get all my peeps chatting again I thought we could all play a little game.

You all know how this one goes, it’s an old GMMR favorite. But if you are a newbie, then here’s how we play. I’m going to throw out a TV actor/actress and another actor, & you have to link the two together using 6 movies/TV show or less. Once you have successfully linked the pair, YOU can suggest the next challenge. Remember…one of the actors MUST be on TV.

Rules:

  • Since this is a TV blog I’ll allow you to use TV shows as connectors. BUT…you can only use a TV show if the actor/actress was a series regular. If they showed up as a guest star on Law & Order or had a 3 episode arc on JAG it doesn’t count.
  • Both actors must be alive
  • Let’s not make them too hard or it will be a bit too hard.

Here’s an example of how this works:Michael Vartan (Alias) to Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy)

Michael Vartan was on ALIAS with JENNIFER GARNER
Jennifer Garner was in 13 GOING ON 30 with MARK RUFFALO
Mark Ruffalo was in JUST LIKE HEAVEN with REESE WITHERSPOON
Reese Witherspoon was in SWEET HOME ALABAMA with PATRICK DEMPSEY

Ok your first challenge: Nathan Fillion to Christopher Gorham

HOUSE Season 4 Spoilers from Hugh Laurie & Friends

Cast of HOUSE

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 4 of HOUSE. Read at your own risk.

In what I can only assume must have been one of the most fun panels to attend on the TCA press tour, MeeVee Editor Joel Brown got to hang with the cast of HOUSE yesterday. It seems that Hugh Laurie and his Princeton-Plainsboro colleagues, Jesse Spender, Omar Epps, Lisa Edelstein, Jennifer Morrison and Robert Sean Leonard were ready to spill the scoop on S4.

The big question stemming from the season finale was whether or not Drs. Cameron, Foreman and Chase will be returning to work alongside House. The answer…YES…well, eventually.

“…the truth is, everybody is back eventually. And everybody is back having changed and having different capabilities. …

As the season opens, though, House’s three acolytes are working elsewhere…and House is sifting through 40 potential replacements.

As [Executive Producer Katie] Jacobs explained it, “In the first episodes, House is alone and he is solving cases by himself. And Cuddy is pissed and (Wilson) thinks he is losing his mind. And Cuddy will insist, and eventually win, that he hire a new team. And he will do it in a very House-ian way. So essentially the truth is over the first episodes he’s going to call in all the resumes on his desk, it’s a very large number, I think 40, a large number, and we’re going to see who survives. We’re going to play a ‘House’ version of ‘Survivor.’

“We were on the phone with Fox, and we said, ‘We’re going to kind of play ‘Survivor’ with ‘House,’ and they said, ‘Don’t you mean you’re going to play ‘American Idol’ with ‘House?'”

And just what is Hugh Laurie’s secret to making his cranky and misanthropic character likable? And why does his answer have anything to do with STAR TREK? Click here to read more from Hugh Laurie and more musing from the HOUSE panel at the TCAs.

AGE OF LOVE Recap: Into the Woods

Episode: Six
Original Air Date: 7/23/08
GMMR Recapper: SB

What an action-packed episode! Note to producers: your show could have been this interesting all along if you would have involved alcohol sooner. Haven’t you ever seen The Bachelor?

We begin with Jayanna calling Maria out about not leaving like she said she was going to for the second time. Which, good. Someone needs to address that. Maria says that you have to give a man credit for showing up the way that he does when he does. Jayanna points out that he hasn’t really been around for Maria very much and asks if Maria really thinks he’s going to show up for her. And while it’s a very valid point and question, it’s also still pretty catty. Like it would be a fine thing to say to your best friend who knows that you love her, but not a fine thing to say to someone that you barely know and with whom you competing for the guy in question. And also, I’m not sure what the point of asking that is anyway, if it’s to try to convince Maria to leave or to make her more defensive toward Mark, but Maria doesn’t buy into it, and good for her.

Jayanna continues her multi-sided attack in a talking head and says that Amanda has made it clear that she is leaving with Mark, but Jayanna says that no one takes her man away from her. Cut to everyone sitting around and Jayanna carrying on about how it doesn’t make sense to her to fall in love so quickly, and it’s obviously directed at Amanda. Megan talking heads, hilariously, that she is in school and gets enough lectures from her professors and doesn’t need to sit here and listen to another one from this woman. Except instead of woman, you can tell she almost says “bitch”, and if she had not stopped herself and actually said that, Megan could have come out as my absolute favorite person in this episode. Amanda correctly points out that Jayanna is trying to get them to disconnect Mark and is saying that he’s not good enough for them and so on, and seems to realize that it’s manipulative. I’m glad everyone is getting as sick of stupid Jayanna as I am.

GILMORE GIRLS Creator on Series Ending

July 24, 2007 by

Unlike many of us, GILMORE GIRLS creator Amy Sherman-Palladino was not glued to her seat the night of the Gilmore Girls series finale.

When asked about the show’s finale at the TCAs, Sherman-Palladino offered this campy response:

“I didn’t watch it,” said Palladino, her head adorned with an ivory feathered stovepipe hat, her feet sporting boots that matched. “I think I just got very drunk that night and sat in a corner, and he (Daniel) read in a corner, and then we just got quiet and went to bed. I couldn’t watch it because it wasn’t my ending, it wasn’t going to be what I had in my head forever, and I was going to do something crazy, homicidal, suicidal, something with an ‘-idal’ in it.”

As for those infamous two words she had planned on ending the show with? Well, she’s not spilling the beans. But at this point there is no way that two words could possibly live up to the grandiose importance that Gilmore Girls fans have given them.
