UGLY BETTY Review: Do We Really “Meade” More Drama?
October 26, 2007 by Kath Skerry
I’ve opted not to read MK’s review of last night’s UGLY BETTY because I really want to watch it later today. Thursday night TV is going to have to wait until I get through with Friday “real job” stuff. But enjoy MK’s review and show the love in the comments.

I smell a new t-shirt for the GMMR store. “The Debitz: Instilling Fear in Actuaries Around the World.” Like it? Yeah, I thought so. It’s killer, just like last night’s episode of Ugly Betty. And not in the Norman Bates “Psycho” sort of way mind you. Although for some, especially those named Mark that idea may be quite appealing. (Sidenote: What’s up with all the Beets Bates Motel references popping up everywhere?)
There was much to love in this week’s installment of Ugly Betty that I don’t know where to begin. Oh wait I know! How about we start with Betty and Henry making out to “As Time Goes By” in the last five minutes of the episode. Yep, it happened folks. Betty finally took the plunge and threw caution to the wind after essentially spending an absurd about of time finding ways to avoid Henry altogether. Now I don’t want to go into the laundry list of tactics she utilized in her endeavor to evade him (schedules, gangsta Asian messengers, bowling with a guy she met on bachelocity.com ), but suffice it to say she could have authored a book titled Betty’s Guide to Avoiding Your Soulmate Who Is Having a Baby with Another Woman by now and it would make millions after a quick appearance on Oprah with the requisite 21 pairs of Jimmy Choos as a thank you.
Surprisingly it wasn’t just Betty and Henry that provided a collective awww tonight. As I hinted to earlier Mark also found a little something to smile about. His name is Cliff St. John and I personally would like to date him. That is if he wasn’t gay and fictional. Cliff is the cute/pudgy as a teddy bear photographer for Mode that caught Marks eye not for being chiseled like the male models for the shoot were, but for his intelligence and sense of humor. While Mark went for beauty over brains initially, Cliff eventually won in the end providing Mark a nice appletini and some hand holding over a relaxing night of Hitchcock (The sentence sounds dirty but I can’t help it. It’s his name for goodness sakes!).
Of course not everything made me awww in a cutesy sort of way. Hilda’s reliance on the Bronx’s version of The Golden Girls simply because they understood her grief was very awww in a touching way. As was Justin’s stab at becoming one of the Sharks from West Side Story (Or was he trying to be an Outsider? Can’t know for certain). His rebellion leading into Hilda’s speech that they can’t grow apart was tear inducing for sure. But I’m glad it’s over now. I want my tap dancing fashionista Justin back. He’s been sorely missed.
As for the Meade saga, I’m ready for it to be over. How many times is Claire going to attempt to kill Wilhemina? How many times are Daniel and Alexis going to continue to argue like bitter sorority sisters? Finally, how many more episodes until the farce that is the wedding between Bradford and Wilhemina is exposed?
Did you like the episode as much as I did? Are Mark and Cliff your new favorite couple? Comment Below.

Great review 🙂 I loved Marc and Cliff! I’m glad Marc made the right choice; I’ve always known he was a good guy deep deep down.
the thing that cracked me up the most was “I love blowing” – hahaha, just a reflection of some of the awesome typo’s I have made in the past.
Hey Psappy! I didn’t read your review yet as I want to watch the show first, but wanted to shout out congrats for being published and thanks for hosting the gang last night.
I loved the Mark storyline, although the whole choosing between dates seemed a little silly. Definitely my favourite of the season, and its been killer.
Hopefully they’ll mature Amanda’s storyline, tone down the drama with the Meades and bring back the Justin we all love 🙂
Everything you said…ditto. 🙂
I was NOT enjoying Wacko!Justin so I’m so happy things are back to normal on that front.
And SQUEEEE for Betty & Henry!
This episode was 10,000 times better than last week’s. Thank heavens.
The beets bates motel is a reference to the “Money” episode of the office….maybe you were just being rhetorical though.
Julia…I was being rhetorical. 🙂 I originally used strikethrough text for “Beets” but it didn’t post like that unfortunately.
Julia…I originally used strikethrough text for “Beets” but it didn’t post like that unfortunately. But you’re right in that it is a reference to “Money”.
Okay, finally watched, lobed it, adore Cliff St. John, and the kiss to ‘As Time Goes By’. Great review!
The other networks need to emulate how ABC shows online eps, they do it quite well. There’s just too much going on on my DVR on Thursday nights to include Betty so it is great to have the online option. And I’m with you Psappy, I’m over the Meade wars.
