Cocktail Party Primer (Episode #11): Do We Have to Call it Meurte Laughlin Now?

My apologies to Drew Carey and verbal (from the comments last week). You take one little nacho break at the end of The Price is Right and you miss the ever-important admonition to spay and neuter our pets. And then you feel like an idiot. I promise, from now on, if the urge for a snack strikes when I’m on assignment, I’ll take full advantage of my TiVo’s pause function. Now that that’s out of the way, this week we’ll learn that David Chase is a dick, that baseball can hit it out of the park, and that Fox thinks a women’s prison could be both dramatic and hot.
- Although it was just a week ago that I compared Viva Laughlin to a horrible, fevered nightmare, I honestly didn’t think it would get cancelled quite this fast. The way CBS has erased the show from its website and isn’t even hosting the remaining episodes online (a courtesy that Fox even gave the abhorrent Anchorwoman) seems a little like salting the earth so nothing will ever grow again. It’s as though the network wants us all to think that the whole thing really was just a terrible dream. I’m afraid if I turn to CBS, I’ll see a shiny metal watch swinging slowly back and forth and hear a soothing voice saying, “You’re feeling very sleepy. You never saw Viva Laughlin. You’re going to watch Cane on Tuesday at 10:00, 9:00 Central.”
- The news broke this week that the Daniel Dae Kim was arrested for drunk driving, making him the fourth Lost cast member busted for DUI in just two years. The secret if finally out folks. Down in Hawaii, the Lost set is run entirely by members of Delta Tau Chi. In a statement, J.J. Abrams said, “To foster an atmosphere of professionalism for the cast of Lost, some changes will be implemented immediately. Going forward, we’re cutting down to two on set kegs, no more than half a dozen strippers, and body shots will be limited to Fridays.”
It Doesn’t Suck to be a Boston Sports Fan

To say that I’m still recovering from last night would be an understatement. It was a loooooong night. But if you’re living in Boston it was a damn good night. I was a crazy bar, with a lot of crazy loud and drunk people (and my friend Ray was their leader). The Bruins were on one TV, the BC/ VA Tech game on another, and of course the Sox on the jumbotron. Kind of nuts.
My BC friends were damn near violent as their team was down pretty much the whole game. A 4th quarter comeback to win it all sent the bar into hysterics. I was scared for my life and just held on for dear life.
The Sox had be pretty stressed out all night but kept their 2-1 lead over the Rockies to go ahead in the series 2-0. Dude, I would SO not want to meet Sox closer Jonathan Paplebon in a dark alley…I think that guy is certifiable – but in a good way. The stress really got to me in the 8th and 9th and I was not really a fun person to be around. But they held on and took the game, and once again the bar erupted into another chaotic scene.
All and all a good night. And no, this isn’t a sports blog but the games were the only things I watched on TV last night so I thought I would share.

UGLY BETTY Review: Do We Really “Meade” More Drama?

I’ve opted not to read MK’s review of last night’s UGLY BETTY because I really want to watch it later today. Thursday night TV is going to have to wait until I get through with Friday “real job” stuff. But enjoy MK’s review and show the love in the comments.

I smell a new t-shirt for the GMMR store. “The Debitz: Instilling Fear in Actuaries Around the World.” Like it? Yeah, I thought so. It’s killer, just like last night’s episode of Ugly Betty. And not in the Norman Bates “Psycho” sort of way mind you. Although for some, especially those named Mark that idea may be quite appealing. (Sidenote: What’s up with all the Beets Bates Motel references popping up everywhere?)
There was much to love in this week’s installment of Ugly Betty that I don’t know where to begin. Oh wait I know! How about we start with Betty and Henry making out to “As Time Goes By” in the last five minutes of the episode. Yep, it happened folks. Betty finally took the plunge and threw caution to the wind after essentially spending an absurd about of time finding ways to avoid Henry altogether. Now I don’t want to go into the laundry list of tactics she utilized in her endeavor to evade him (schedules, gangsta Asian messengers, bowling with a guy she met on bachelocity.com ), but suffice it to say she could have authored a book titled Betty’s Guide to Avoiding Your Soulmate Who Is Having a Baby with Another Woman by now and it would make millions after a quick appearance on Oprah with the requisite 21 pairs of Jimmy Choos as a thank you. THE OFFICE Thursday on Give Me My Remote (Well, Kinda)

Sorry I don’t have any time for a real OFFICE Thursday today. Just a reminder that the show is on tonight and it returns to its half hour format (like you’d forget). Sadly I’m going to TiVo THE OFFICE and watch it in the morning. WOW…I can’t believe I just typed that. Just goes to show what an important event the World Series is, because I don’t miss THE OFFICE for just anything.
Late Night Chit Chat…
- A repeat of John Krasinski’s last visit with Conan will be replayed on tonight
Tonight on THE OFFICE…
“Local Ad” | 9pm on NBC
When the Scranton office is tapped to appear in a commercial, entertainer wannabe Michael sees a prime chance to display his creative talent. Meanwhile, Dwight delves into an Internet-based virtual world. (Promo Photos | Scenes from tonight’s episode)
The Office Convention…
THE OFFICE convention is this weekend and it still has set in that I’m going to be missing it. I’m sure you will all have such a blast. Know that I’m there with you in spirit. If you’re attending this weekend, leave a comment and let me know. Also, for all of you who are attending, keep me filled in as to what’s going on. Share your stories with me and others throughout the weekend here: TALES FROM THE OFFICE CONVENTION
LIVE Office Chat Tonight…
Yes Virginia, there IS a Live Office Chat at Buddy TV tonight. I won’t be there, but long time chatter, Psappy, has kindly agreed to handle things tonight. Be kind to her. Time: 8:30pm EST. Place: BuddyTV.com Yup, our crew will once again be gathering to watch THE OFFICE together tonight. If you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you. Casual attired please. And if you’ve got booze bring it along (unless of course you are a minor and in that case bring apple juice). Hope to see you guys there tonight. Set a reminder now! ( GMMR’s/THE OFFICE TVj sessions @ Buddy TV)
THE OFFICE Poll of the Week…
This one is not easy, but I think you can handle it. Name your ONE favorite all time favorite episode of THE OFFICE. Defend your ep to others…let them know why you chose it. I know it’s not easy!
I’ll go first. Although mine changes from week-to-week, I’d say my all time favorite episode is “Diversity Day”. I wasn’t thrilled with the pilot and had no plans on watching this show after the first episode. By chance the next week THE OFFICE came on the TV and I decided just to leave it on. I was floored at how good it was and I haven’t missed an episode since.
PRIVATE PRACTICE Recap: In Which Addison Finds a Showerhead

It was late and I was bleary-eyed but I did catch PRIVATE PRACTICE late night last night (or should I say early this morning). But guest recapper, kwiggle did all the heavy lifting for this one – I just had to throw in my 2 cents every now and again. Share your two cents in the comments.
Title: “In Which Addison Finds a Showerhead”
Original Airdate: 10.24.07
GMMR Guest Recapper: kwiggle
Addison’s been fantasizing about Pete, and can’t seem to stop. Naomi thinks that a professional like Violet will be able to help. Violet suggests that Addison just needs to use her fantasies of Pete to help “scratch the itch” (and if you’re not following these metaphors then (a) you’re probably too young to be reading this and (b) too young to be watching PRIVATE PRACTICE in the first place). Addison drops the bomb on Naomi and Violet about how she doesn’t “do that”. Yeah right.
Even though it seems that all these doctors do is stand around and talk about the sex they’re not having, they do actually have patients. Let’s see who stopped by the practice last night.
Fantasy Pete has a female athlete who presents with cold symptoms. She ends up having bronchial spasms and needs steroids to get it under control which would ruin her chances of going to the Olympics, so she declines and leaves. Pete can’t get ahold of her coach so he goes to see him at the meet. The girl collapses and when brought to the hospital, drugs are found in her system. The coach had taken matters into his own hands and found a doctor that would help the girl out. Now, she may never run again and Pete punches the coach out. Read more
BIONIC WOMAN Recap: The Education of Jamie Summers

I really can’t get the vibe on how you all are feeling about BIONIC WOMAN. I’m glad that Jo is handling the recaps because I’m about 3 episodes behind, which is saying a lot since there’s only been about 4 episodes, right? What’s your take on BIONIC WOMAN. Loving it or wish it would strangle itself with its own bionic arm? Per usual, Jo gives us a great rundown on last night’s episode.
Title: “The Education of Jaime Summers”
Original Airdate: 10.24.07
GMMR Recaper: JoJaime gets to go undercover as a British exchange student. Clever, convenient or purposeful by the writers? Maybe some writers already went on strike….maybe a strike would improve a few shows including this one….
Her cell goes off in neuroscience class. The hottie TA bails her out of a jam. Points for Jaime using the word “OY!” since after my two months of a Harry Potter audio marathon, it’s my new favorite word. Nathan, the tech formerly known as Wannabe Marshall Flinkman, watches through Jaime’s bionic eye as she flirts with the hottie TA. Finally he rings her bionic ear to remind her to go break into the lab. Their phone conversation is actually entertaining, but right as I wonder too, he asks why she’s still using the accent. “A method actor.” Goodbye fourth wall. Oddly though, the accent helps her character be more interesting.
GOSSIP GIRL: Masks Don’t Hide Anything

It pained me not to watch GOSSIP GIRL last night. I don’t think I realized just how much I liked this show until I found myself staring at MK’s review from last night contemplating whether or not I should read it. I broke down and did…spoilers be damned, I couldn’t resist. It’s a great review, so a round of applause for GMMR gust blogger, MK!!!Episode “The Handmaiden’s Tale”
Original Airdate: 10.24.07
GMMR Guest Blogger: MK
A Saturday night for your humble reviewer, a commoner, can mean pajamas and Netflix. However, no one wants to watch me, so the CW brings you face to face with an Upper East Side Saturday night for last night’s episode of Gossip Girl.
For Blaire and crew, it’s a masquerade ball replete with avant-garde fashion, Phantom of the Opera-styled masks, and a dash of Marie Antoinette frivolity for good measure (i.e., rich people stuff). For Rufus, Lily, and the rest of the parentals, it’s “Night on the Tangier”, a Moroccan-themed party that infused extra-spicy hookups, hookahs and Lebanese brothel dancers into an eclectic dish of middle-aged celebration (i.e., older rich people stuff). They both looked like fantastic parties to me, but like all Josh Schwartz parties, there’s got to be a fair share of drama and these two didn’t disappoint.
The Funny
First and foremost, Rufus and Lily’s intense kiss at Eleanor’s “Night on the Tangier” party…What can I say other than I laughed because I know where this is heading. One hyphenated word: half siblings. I’m guessing the love child is Eric which makes the attraction he has with Jenny no bueno. Seriously, am I the only one seeing this coming?
I also laughed at Nate’s mother’s use the Vanderbilt engagement ring to seduce Eleanor into choosing Nate’s father as her banker. Fingers crossed that Blaire’s been doing her hand exercises because that ring was heavier than the dialogue itself.
GMMRers are the Best!!

Well one day and (hopefully) only three more to go. My Red Sox kicked a little Rockies ass last night in Game 1 of the World Series. As you know, the World Series trumps primetime TV in my world. But lucky for me I have the BEST readers out there many of whom stepped up the the plate (pun intended) and hit a home run (pun carefully planned) offering to cover primetime TV for me, well us.
You’re going to be hearing from a few different GMMRers over the next few days, and I wanted to take a moment to say that it means a lot to me that we’ve developed such a great community here at GMMR and that so many people offered to help me out. For every single one of you that volunteered to help review shows so GMMR doesn’t come to a grinding halt during the World Series I just wanted to say THANK YOU (and most likely I’ll be in touch).
I hope you will all support your fellow GMMRers and show the love because as you know, comments=currency around these parts.
THE AMAZING RACE Season 12 Cast: Meet the Racers

When THE AMAZING RACE returns for its 12th season on Sunday, November 4th at 8/9c, 11 new teams will be racing for the $1M prize. Here’s your first look at the teams ready to race across the world.
Meet the Racers…
Name: RONALD HSU & CHRISTINA HSU
Hometown: Tacoma, WA
Relationship: FATHER/DAUGHTER
his father/daughter team is certain they can win the Race by relying on their intellect. Christina’s main goal on the Race is to have her father, a self-proclaimed workaholic, stop and smell the roses for once in his life. _______________________________
Name: KYNT COTHRON & VYXSIN FIALA
Hometown: Louisville, Ky.
Relationship:DATING GOTHS
Representing the “Goth” community in Louisville has embedded a strong sense of “us against the world” mentality in these two Racers. Therefore, don’t look for them to fall apart when the chips are down – a trait that will undoubtedly be tested on the Race.
_______________________________
Name: LORENA SEGURA & JASON WIDENER
Hometown: Sherman Oaks, Calif.
Relationship: DATING
This couple met at a bar over three years ago, quickly started dating, and have been trying to figure out if they really belong together even since. Lorena is from Puerto Rico and Jason hails from Arkansas … and the cultural differences between them has often caused friction in their relationship. Both are running the Race to see if they have what it takes to withstand the pressures of traveling around the world in under 30 days.
HOUSE: Appointment Television

I’ve become completely smitten with HOUSE. I’ve always been a fan but this season HOUSE has become one of those shows that I look forward to all day. Last year Tuesdays for me where all about “Gilmore Girls” and “Veronica Mars” with House as an after thought. With the absence of those two shows, House has become my one must see show on Tuesday nights.
Last night we had another stellar episode. Hugh Laurie has never been better and I think he peels back a layer of Dr. Gregory House with every episode. He’s so dynamic – I can’t take my eyes off of him. And am I the only not looking forward to the return of Chase, Cameron and Foreman? I know I’ve said it before but I don’t think the show missed a beat with the absence of these three. I think the newbies bring something new to the show and compliment House (the show and the character). The scenes we’ve seen with Cameron, Chase and Foreman have seemed a bit forced to me. It’s almost as if the writers were saying “hey, don’t forget about them because they’re still here.”

PRISON BREAK Spinoff in the Works
October 24, 2007 by Kath Skerry
Filed under Prison Break, Prison Break Spoilers
WARNING! The following contains minor spoilers for upcoming episodes of Prison Break. Read at your own risk.
Are you ready for another break out? According to Variety, a spinoff to Fox’s PRISON BREAK is in the works, but this time around Michael Scofield won’t be the one breaking out. Tentatively titled “Prison Break: Cherry Hill”, the new show focuses on Molly, a character that viewers of Prison Break will meet later this season. Molly is an upper middle-class wife who seeks out vengeance after a family tragedy. While serving time for her misdeeds, Molly learns that some of her family members may still be alive and decides she needs to do whatever she can to get out of jail and to them – even if that means breaking out.
“Cherry Hill” is being written by Prison Break executive producer, Matt Olmstead who says of the new character, “There is an ironic similarity between Molly and Michael — they’re both emotionally banged-up, both have lost loved ones, and both want the people responsible to pay — so they empathize with each other,” Olmstead said.
Viewers can expect to see a lot of Molly when she is introduced to Prison Break later this season. If the spinoff doesn’t move forward, Molly will stay with the show as a series regular.
So PRISON BREAK fans…what do you think of a possible spinoff?

CHUCK Recap: Chuck vs. The Sizzling Shrimp

Episode: “Chuck vs. The Sizzling Shrimp”
Original Air Date: 10.22.07
Recapper: SB
Alright, y’all, I don’t know what my problem was last night, but it was like my brain wasn’t working or something. Which was rough, because I’m not that into the whole Asian/kung fu movie thing, so I just could not figure out what was happening. I kept having to ask Billy at commercial breaks what was happening, and I know it annoys him when I can’t follow plots, but he held it in and took pity on me because I’ve been so tired lately. And actually, that segues perfectly into how I was pretty stressed out during this episode because I was relating ENTIRELY too much with how much stuff Chuck had to do and how many directions he was being pulled.
So anyway. Since Chuck hasn’t been around much, which was blamed mostly on how in love with Sarah he is, he was supposed to have A Night of Morgan one night and then Mother’s Day in October with Ellie the next night, which we don’t find out until later is because their mom left them and that’s the day they learned to take care of themselves. Meanwhile, maybe my mom should have left me and made me learn to take care of myself, because my nails REALLY need trimmed. They’re making it hard to type. Of course spy business gets in the way but also of course, they eventually work it out.
