SUPERNATURAL Returns

Supernatural

Last year I took an informal poll of GMMR readers and one of the shows that you wanted to read more about here on GMMR was SUPERNATURAL. Now you know me…I can’t really write about show I don’t watch. I’d feel like a fraud. As great as I hear it is, SUPERNATURAL just wasn’t one of those shows that I was going to add to my TV roster. But I know some of you really like it, so I’m going to do my best to report on it from time to time. If you ever find SUPERNATURAL news, feel free to pass it on.

For now, here’s a full and very funny recap of the SUPERNATURAL premiere by my friend (and Supernatural junkie) Ducky.

The Winchesters are back and we’re all doing cartwheels with happiness but let me tell you, there are a bunch of demon hunters that are doing anything but. They’re cursing our boys because all the demons that Sam and Dean released into the world are roaming around doing a huge dance number from Buffy’s “Once More With Feeling”! Things are not right in the world… well except for us because our boys are back!

Folks, if I’m taking out the trash one night and a huge swirling black cloud of devil dust is taking over the horizon, I can guarantee you that I’m not going to investigate the rumblings coming from my trash cans. Not like I’d be running either because seriously when it came down to it, you know I’d be the older sister in Poltergeist standing in the front yard screaming “WHAT’S HAPPENING?” as that demon cloud flies into my mouth. GREY’S ANATOMY Redux

Filed under Grey's Anatomy, Grey's Anatomy Recap

I love me some GREY’S ANATOMY, but I don’t know if the magic is gone (he he). I can quite put my finger on it but I don’t love the show like I did the first few seasons. It’s still appointment television for me, and I would be devastated if the DVR didn’t record it, but I’m not passionate about it the way I once was. I don’t have that feeling of counting down the minutes until it started (and yes, I once was like that with this show).

g.jpg

That being said, I really enjoyed last night episode…well, parts of it at least. I thought the dialog was quick and witty, and there was a nice blend between the absurd and the drama. I was really excited to see some interesting patients find their way into Seattle Grace again. I thought the first two seasons were stronger when they had interesting cases and interesting patients for the staff to interact with. Grey’s really lost the importance on the patient in the soap opera that became season 3.

But let’s talk about the good and the not so good of tonight’s episode.

Here’s what I could leave behind:

  • Izzie turning into an incompetent fool around Callie. Yeah, your cheating with her husband but you’re a doctor first so pull it together Izzie.
  • Meredith being a complete bitch to Lexie. Last time I checked it wasn’t Lexie’s fault that your daddy left you. Why not be an adult and have a coffee to explain that you are not interested in having anything more than a professional relationship with her. Yes Lexie was creepy in her stalkerish ways, but Meredith was pathetic playing yet again the ‘damaged little girl’ card..we get it. Now grow up.
  • Mama Burke’s waiting room visit as a way to delve into the relationship psyche of most of the main characters. Too easy, and too obvious. Grey’s is was better than that.

Spotlight: Taylor Kitsch of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

To get you excited about tonight’s premiere of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, I thought it would be nice to spotlight one of the fine (and I do mean “fine”) actors that you’ll see on tonight’s show. And just as luck would have it, one of my best friends is dating him (well in her mind she is, but I’m of the belief that if you concentrate hard enough you can make anything happen).

So please indulge my friend Julie as she introduces you to her TV boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch. Julie was even kind enough to share picturs of her and Tim from their personal photo album (a GMMR exclusive…you won’t find these pics anywhere else – that I can guarantee).

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

julie.jpgKnown to many as Julie Burke’s loveslave, and I guess to a few other people as Tim Riggins in “Friday Night Lights,” Taylor Kitsch stars as the high school football player who is the impassioned yet underlying strength of the Dillon Panthers.

As the “bad boy” girls yearn to fix, but who secretly yearns for Julie Burke, Riggins is troubled and struggling to find his own purpose. He takes out his frustration by having thrice daily sex sessions with Julie Burke. Kitsch brings a poignancy and vulnerability, having seduced his paralyzed best friend’s girlfriend — the All-American cheerleader Lyla Garrity (SPOILER ALERT – whose character will be killed off by Julie Burke in season two) — and exposes his own demons by way of the bottle. Kitsch breathes life into Riggins and is taking the fullback from reckless to respected.

This summer, Kitsch will round out the cast of “Gospel Hill,” alongside Julia Stiles, Danny Glover, Angela Bassett, and Samuel L. Jackson. Directed by Giancarlo Esposito, the film focuses on the former sheriff of a Southern town dealing with his past sins, while a former civil rights worker, who is withdrawn since the martyrdom of his brother 30 years before, struggles to live life as well.

30 ROCK Recap & Redux: SeinfeldVision

30 Rock

Title: Seinfeld Vision
Original Airdate: Oct. 4, 2007 (season premiere)
GMMR recapper: Brian

Maybe the New York Times was right to day when its reviewer ragged on the premiere of 30 Rock. Or maybe I’d hyped it up in my mind the last few weeks anticipating its return. But I have to admit, I was a little underwhelmed by the return of what I consider The Funniest Show on Television™. (Note: The Office is the Best Show on Television. Totally separate category.)I mean, where was the funny tonight? Have I been spoiled by Curb Your Enthusiasm that Jerry Seinfeld doesn’t hit my funny bone any more. At times it was more like he was hitting my griefbone. It’s a good thing SeinfeldVision only comes once a year and only lasts a month.

And it wasn’t just him. I checked my DVR and it was fully 27 minutes into this episode when I laughed out loud for the first time. (It was when Tracy walked in to find Liz sprawled on the set in her wedding dress eating ham and asked if a Korean person died. Nice payoff from Liz’s dressing room rant to the writers.)

THE OFFICE Redux: Dunder Mifflin Infinity

Dunder Mifflin Infinity

I’m sitting here staring at a blank screen not sure where to start. See THE OFFICE is hands down my favorite show on television. It makes me laugh like I haven’t laughed since, well since the UK version of The Office. I’ve had a really bad day today and as pathetic as it sounds I kept thinking…just wait until 9pm and you can stop stressing and sit back and laugh. So it pains me to have to type anything but a glowing review about tonight’s show. Don’t get me wrong, I laughed my ass of at times and there were real moments of genius in the episode, and we’re going to celebrate those, but if I’m being honest I thought as a whole the episode was really uneven…again.

Steve Carell and John KrasinskiI understand that with the syndication rights as they are the one hour shows have to stand as two half-hour episodes, but they feel like two separate shows and similar to last week, the first half was strong and the second half dragged. As someone who completely supported the idea of one-hour long Office eps last year when the idea was floated around, I’m going call a take back. Maybe shorter is better (that’s what she said).

There are plenty of you out there right now that loved every single minute of it and are going to rip me to shreds for daring to go against the Mothership. I’m not hear to hate and I’m not going to bemoan the show too much because there were more brilliant moments than off ones and I want to concentrate of the funny…deal?!

Here are my favorite moments of tonight’s episode (I’d say in no particular order, but I guess they’re in the order that they happened in the show).

  • Toby is bitter and jealous and I love it! Filing a fake complaint and then outing Jim and Pam as a couple?! Things always seem to backfire on him and he needs a break. And how about when he denied them the “love contract” in the hopes they won’t last, despite the kids declaring they’re pretty serious about each other? Oh Toby, will you never win?
  • Angela calling Pam the “office mattress” made me spit out my water (well not really, I wasn’t drinking any, but I wanted to make a point). That was the old Angie…welcome back, girl!
  • Kelly dressing like a complete tramp and trying to convince Ryan that she was pregnant. Hey, it’s not like we didn’t see this coming. She did offer up the same suggestion to Pam at one point in time. For the record, that outfit was ALL Kelly Kapoor – Mindy Kaling would not be caught dead in an outfit so un-cute.
  • Pardon the inappropriate language but Ryan Howard is a douche. Seriously, I never really liked him when he was the Temp but I pretty much loathe his very existence. Sorry BJ but I’m ok with not seeing you anymore if it means we can avoid DB!Ryan (by the way, until he starts acting nicer that is his new name…DB!Ryan)

THE OFFICE Thursday on Give Me My Remote

Please don’t throw garbage at me but we’re going to have a super quick THE OFFICE Thursday post today. Craziness has ensued on my life today and I’m a busy, busy girl. I have to get some stuff taken care of today…you don’t want me to miss THE OFFICE tonight, do you? Let’s jump in, and then you all can take over Office Thursday for me, ok?

Tonight on The Office…

Much to the dismay of Michael and many of the employees, Ryan returns to the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin to bring the company into the digital age. Angela is still upset about her cat.

LIVE Office Chat Tonight…

Thanks to those who stopped by the LIVE Office chat at BuddyTV last week. I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue them (I’m still not sure) but let’s give it a whirl tonight and see how it goes. I was in L.A. last week and couldn’t really hang in the chat, so I’m excited to watch with all of you tonight. Things kick off around 8:30ish over at BuddyTV.com.

From the Desk of Meredith Palmer…
Did you know that Kate Flannery was a stunt woman? Well at least she was in last week’s episode. Next to Roy’s DUI picture that was one of the funniest visuals in OFFICE history. Nice job, Kate. Head on over to Kate’s blog and read up on the antics of last week’s premiere including the Office premiere party. I wasn’t too far away…if only I had known. (Kate’s Blog)

OFFICE Question of the Week…
Dwangla had a rough week last week. What do you think is in store for their romantic relationship this season? What would you like to see happen?

So Say We All: YOUR Take on Wednesday Night TV

I’m sitting here fighting to keep my eyes open. Someone stayed up a little too late last night and watched a little too much TV. Sadly, I haven’t even watched it all. Damn you Wednesday nights. Here’s my short take on what I did watch, but I’m more interested in what you thought….Private Practice | Dirty Sexy Money | Gossip Girl | Bionic Woman | Pushing Daisies and more.

Private Practice
Private Practice
YES! YES! YES! I’m so glad I liked last night’s episode. As you may recall, I loathed last week’s premiere episode and I was truly worried that the show would not have a place on my busy Wednesday night TV schedule. But I’m happy to report that I really loved the show last night. Damn you Shonda Rhimes and Co for making be bawl like an itty bitty baby (perhaps one that was switched at birth…d’oh). Come on, how heartbreaking was that scene when the mothers had to swap their babies? The two women were holding their own biological children but couldn’t tear their eyes off the baby that they had come to love as their own. Just getting teary thinking about it now. I love me some Cooper and hope that they use Paul Adelstein more in upcoming eps. I’m still not loving Amy Brennenman as the emotionally disturbed psychologist. I think the show could drop her and I wouldn’t even noticed. And why was she blathering along about her ex when she is clearly in love with Cooper. Oh and Shonda…more Piz please!! Or whatever his name is in this show…Dell is it? So last week a lot of you thought I was way off in my dislike for the premiere. Are we on the same page this week. Tell me.

Dirty Sexy Money
Dirty Sexy Money
I’m anxiously awaiting for the ratings this morning because Dirty Sexy Money didn’t do as well as I had hoped last week. I hope you guys are watching this one. I think it’s brilliant. I love that all the Darling offspring are these adults trapped in the mind of a 5 year old. They are so emotionally immature that I wonder how they’ve managed to live this long. Some of last night’s keeper moments for me were:

  • Father Brian (ok anything with Brian kills me) telling his son that he doesn’t speak English. Later Tripp speaks to the little kid in his native tongue and the kid just stares at him. So funny!
  • The family hiring a stand in for Juliette in the family portrait. They’re all just interchangeable pretty parts.
  • The lions in the family picture…HA!
  • Patrick and his tranny girlfriend – I’ll admit it, they might be my new favorite TV couple.

I know the show is technically a drama, but it’s so campy that I laugh my ass off through the entire episode. And Peter Krause – amazing!! Please tell me you watched so we can talk about it.

BIONIC WOMAN Recap: Paradise Lost

October 4, 2007 by

Title: “Paradise Lost”
Original Airdate: 10.3.07
GMMR Recapper: Jo

Ironically this week’s The Unit also referenced Paradise Lost and has a major character named Jonas. But you can relax because Bionic Woman is borrowing mostly from Alias. So the boring boyfriend is dead and Jamie actually shows emotions (improvement from last week). She also gets drunk and makes out with a random dude til she breaks his rib. Don’t you hate when that happens…

The opening credits are hokey. But the theme song is alright because it has a hard rock slant to it. Jamie’s accent slides in and out as the sisters have their first well acted and written conversation. Jamie goes to lunch with her friends, but I have no idea what they are talking about because the music is louder than the dialogue. Dear Mr. Eick, you rock. Please kick your sound and music editor in the shins. Sincerely, Jo.

Jamie meets Burke (Isaiah Washington) in a bookstore. Nothing eventful except how did he bring a non-working dog in there? What is this, Europe? Jamie saves a suicidal woman and naturally decides to take the position as super agent woman working for the Crossing Jordan doc, who is named Jonas, and Burke. The Marshall Flinkman wanna be hits her on the head to fix her ear and then hits on her. Obligatory fight training sequence with Future Hiro’s Less Cool Brother (his name is Jae on the show but come on, tell me he doesn’t look just like Future Hiro?). This show is really trying to be like Alias and I’m okay with that.

PUSHING DAISIES Premiere Day

October 3, 2007 by

Do you believe in love at first sight? I’m not sure I did until earlier this summer when I saw a sneak peek at ABC’s new show PUSHING DAISIES. Long time readers of GMMR and listeners to the podcast have heard me gushing over this show for months now, and I’m so happy to report that today is the day. Today is the premiere of PUSHING DAISIES.

By now you’ve seen the promos, read the ringing endorsements of notable TV critics, but until you experience the show for yourself you’re not going to full understand just how special it really is. PUSHING DAISIES is unlike anything that you’ve ever seen on television and it will make you fall in love with TV all over again. The show will satisfy your senses with its vibrant look and its decidedly delicious, distinctive and daring dialogue. There is not one moment wasted in this incredible pilot – the best one I have seen since LOST.

If you love a little romance then you are going to love this show! TV romance will never be the same again after you meet Ned & Chuck. This couple will quickly be up there with the best of the best – Sam & Diane, Dave & Maddie, Joey & Dawson Pacey, Jim & Pam. Ned & Chuck go beyond ‘will they/wont’ they’ – they can’t!!! And ladies…Lee Pace – just wait and see – you’ll know what I’m talking about within the first 15 minutes of the pilot.

The show is being hailed by critics as one of the best of the season, but all seem to say it might not find an audience because it’s too quirky. I don’t think quirky is a bad thing when quirky also means smart and interesting. I hope my love for the pilot has made at least a few of your excited for the show. I promise I’m not ‘pushing’ you in the wrong direction.

So Say We All: YOUR Take on Tuesday Night TV

October 3, 2007 by

Get this…I didn’t watch one primetime show on Tuesday! Nope, not one. Granted I don’t really feel like I missed much because I was lucky enough to see most of what I would have watched in advance. Still it’s weird (and fantastic) to spend a night away from the TV. But just because I didn’t watch doesn’t mean I don’t want to talk about TV.So let’s so say we all it up on the following shows:

  • Cavemen
  • Carpoolers
  • House
  • Reaper
  • Bones, Dancing with Stars, NCIS, and whatever else you watched

Cavemen
Cavemen
So tonight was the long awaited premiere of one of the most loathed pilots of the Fall season. But if I’ve learned anything in my brief time in TV blogging I can tell you that the critics really don’t have that much influence on the viewers opinions. It’s all about what resonates with YOU. So what did you think of Cavemen. Was it what you were expecting? Does this show have a chance to make it big or will it be sent back to the Stone Ages? (Hey, it was either that or a Paleolithic joke).

Carpoolers
Carpoolers
Another show that didn’t impress me much with the pilot. Maybe it’s just not my type of humor, or maybe I need to see another episode to really get the joke. Perhaps I spend way too much time in cars to find anything funny about them. Either way this one isn’t on my TiVo list. Can you convince me it should be? Tell me you loved it and I’ll be willing to give it another shot.

House
House
While I haven’t been overly impressed with the 2007 Fall season to date, I have to give mad props to House for opening its season strong. Last week’s premiere episode and tonight’s 2nd episode both really impressed me. Funnier than some of the shows that have been up for Best Comedy over the past few years, House continues to be one of the wittiest and best acted shows on television.
