GREY’S ANATOMY Recap: Physical Attraction…Chemical Reaction
November 9, 2007 by Kath Skerry
George & Izzie haters around the world are dancing around with joy this morning praising bad sex!! All hail bad sex!! Could this finally be the end for this pairing that has just gone so wrong in the eyes of the viewers? And what all about the sex that the others staff members of Seattle Grace Hospital are having, or in the case of McSteamy, want to have? And really, just how sterile is that hospital with all the sex that’s happening there? So yes, George and Izzie had sex for the second time since their drunken encounter a few months back, and it was bad, really bad – all 500 times they tried. But is their love strong enough to deal with the bad sex? Nope! Last night we saw the beginning of the end for Gizzie, but I think it is going to be handled in such a way the two will go back to being really great friends when all is said and done. As friends, I adore these two. As a couple…not so much. I’m just wondering when Shonda and team might explore Izzie’s obvious issues with falling in love at the drop of the hat. You know it goes back to her trailer park days. But I guess with the strike we won’t be seeing any of that anytime soon.
Speaking of issues, every time I think I see a tad bit of growth from Meredith she reverts back into a whiny 6 year old. Then again it must be a Grey family trait since Lexie seems to be a bit Whiny McWhinestein herself. Perhaps it all stems back to their alcoholic father…hmmm. So as we have seen in every single episode of this season, Lexie tries to get close to Meredith and Meredith pushes her away. Yawn! But wait…hold up…is that a Grey backbone I see? Lexie gave Mer a little ‘tude when she was accused of moving in on Meredith’s friends (again, how old is she?) But as we’ve seen so many times this season, Meredith appears to soften to Lexie, and this week it was in the form of asking Alex to take her drunk sister home. I wonder if all progress will be forgotten next week and Mer will go back to hating on Lexie.
In what I thought was the biggest storyline of the night, the Chief fired Callie and promoted Bailey to Chief Resident. It’s about time, and it was well deserved since Callie clearly couldn’t hold it together -but I’m interested in seeing the ramifications. Did Callie know how Bailey tried her very best to save her ass or will she think Bailey took advantage of the situation to throw Callie under the ambulance to snag the job for herself? And was Callie demoted or flat our fired? Normally I’d head over the greyswriters.com where most likely the writer of the episode would clarify, but with the strike and all, no such luck. What’s your take on it? Is Callie leaving Seattle Grace? Say it ain’t so!
Moving on to couples that just won’t work: Derek & Richard and Mark & Erica (sidenote: I could not remember Mark’s name for the life of me. I had to look it up on imdb. I couldn’t remember if he had a name outside of “McSteamy”…that’s sad). The Chief has been married since he left college and doesn’t know how to be alone. His reliance on Derek to be his life mate is wearing thin and interrupting Derek’s sex life. The non-couple broke up but remain on good terms, and on the same piece of land.
Meanwhile, Mark is becoming increasingly more infatuated with Erica Hahn. But Erica sets him straight and says that he only thinks he’s attracted because she’s a great surgeon, she’s confident, and she doesn’t want him. Now, let’s look at this one shall we? Is Mark truly attracted or is Erica right in her assessment? Is Erica perhaps selling herself short thinking a man like McSteamy could be interested in her? Or perhaps Erica is a lesbian. Now don’t get all crazy here. Just because a woman doesn’t want to bed McSteamy doesn’t make her a lesbian, I get that. But, there were rumors swirling last year that the writers considered revealing Christina’s bi-sexual past. Supposedly they dropped the storyline because it was spoiled in the press. How interesting would it be to revisit that story with Hahn as the lesbian and Christina as bi-sexual. What if the serious tension that exists between those two women turned into sexual tension. All that on top of Hahn’s initial grievance that Christina has slept her way to the top. I’m just saying that I think it would be one hell of an interesting storyline.
With all the sex and the lying and the backstabbing it’s sometimes hard to remember that there are patients to treat. Alex had a guy that was obsessed with his need to “crap” (a word I hate and was said about 500 times last night). Izzie has a patient who is recovering from a face lift but who will never recapture her youth. Put them together and you have old people angry sex. Yes, and it was as unsexy as it sounded. George had a killed who rebelled against his fighting parents by swallowing marbles and magnets. Who knew magnets were so lethal? Remind me to make my sister take down those alphabet letters stuck to the fridge.
Meredith and Lexie are assigned to a mother who fell while holding her newborn adopted daughter. The baby is fine, but the mother is not. Nor is the father (Rockmond Dunbar, C-Note from Prison Break) who can’t bear the thought of raising this child, who he hasn’t bonded with, on his own. But in the end, Meredith points out that although he may not know the baby well, he knows her better than anyone else, and the baby needs him. Her words resonate and in a touching moment, the father takes home his baby daughter to raise – on his own. So sad.
As luck would have it, the scripts for Grey’s Anatomy get better and better with each week just as the writers go on strike. I think the show is getting back to a much better place and I find the character interactions, although a still on the soap opera side, more compelling that anything we saw in the latter half of last season. Agree? Disagree? Let me have it!!

Just wanted to chime in and say not all viewers hate Gizzie 🙂
Have to say I totally agree, although I think having some Hahn/Christina sexual tension would be just a bit too much, even for Grey’s.
Elizabeth–I agree! Especially the way that Ausiello interview went with him and Brooke Smith. I was like, um, perhaps even a year ago, there would have been room for it. But not now! Cristina has some major issues to deal with.
Besides, she’d probably only be with her to be ‘in love’ with cardio again.
You know, not everyone hates George and Izzie together. I, for one, think they’ll make a great couple once they get through all this junk getting thrown their way.
I had a question. If Burke was cardio, Derek is neuro, Mark is plastics, Callie is ortho & so on… What’s Bailey’s specialty? Is she cardio also? It’s really bugging me.
Nelly: I don’t think Bailey has a specialty; she’s a general surgeon (see episode “What I Am”). I thought this episode was great and I am really starting to like season 4. Down with Gizzie!
Unless Hahn’s closeted (which I doubt a character like Hahn would be–I think she’d be out loud and proud), she’s already explicitly said she’s not a lesbian or bisexual. When she met Yang a few episodes ago, she told Yang that Yang’s tactics of sleeping with her superiors to get ahead (Burke and Marlow) wouldn’t work on her because she “dates men”. So, either she was lying to Yang just to insult her, or she’s straight.
not everyone hates Gizzie. I DO. But others don’t. I just think that just because the premise is realistic – two best friends of the opposite sex can and do hae sex sometimes and do fall in love – does NOT mean its realistic when George & Izzie do it. Its just random. And THANK YOU, GMMR, for pointing out Izzie’s tendency to fall in love with any guy who is remotely nice to her.
I’m proud to say, I love Gizzie and am sad how all this hate has turned this storyline into crap.
I think it’s safe to say that Meredith never had any warmth growing up with Ellis… this shone through in the way she spoke to Lexi outside her house… but later in the bar it showed us that the “apple really did fall far from the tree” when she asked Alex to take her drunk sister home. I think it will be a great thing to see how Meredith will evolve in coming episodes…Love your site and love your podcast I only just recently found you. Keep up the great work!
I absolutely love how Erica is making a fool out of Mark Sloan. He makes the rest of us straight men look like shit. But to be totally honest, only started watching the series on the finale of season 3 when Yang did not marry Burke.
Now that Dr. McHardcore is a reguar on Grey’s Anatomy, I will try to watch every episode…especially if it includes her rejecting the hospital sleazeball. And I really hope for the sake of Erica/Mark’s storyline that she is not a lesbian. I would like to see this “crush” of Sloan’s play itself out, without her giving in to his charm.
“You’re not attracted to me” bit was too funny. Despite the fact that many of you out there called it bullshit, I do not feel the same way about it.
Also, McSteamy after Hahn? That’s like Brad Pitt going after Roseanne Barr or Rosie O’Donnell. Honestly, who is buyin that? Funny, though.
I totally agree with the Hahn/Cristina thing. According to Brooke she and Sandra pushed for something between these two and would be glad to do it. I’m just saying I would be MORE than glad to watch it! Such a great chemestry those women have!
Great review. Yes Izzie and George needs to be over as soon as possible.
