So Say We All: How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Journeyman

Filed under Heroes, Heroes Recaps, How I Met Your Mother

It’s been a while since we’ve had a ‘so say we all’. Why? Because I’m a very inconsistent blogger who starts these little things and then forgets all about them. Well, there was a lot of TV happening last night, and rather than rant about all of it, here’s my two cents on what I watched and then I’m turning it over to YOU.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Why, why, why does this show not get more recognition? It’s such an amazing comedy and I think it’s right up there with THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK. I love ENTOURAGE and UGLY BETTY but neither one of those shows can hold a comedic candle to HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER yet it never gets the love. Anyway, last night we had a classic Slapsgiving Day episode. Oh wait, I meant Thanksgiving. Ted & Robin tried to navigate their non-friendship only to find themselves back in bed. Can’t these two just get back together already? Robin isn’t very interesting without Ted. And it’s clear that Ted still loves Robin. If we ever meet the kids ‘real’ mother, I think I’m going to hate her.

But Ted & Robin weren’t the story last night. Nope. Last night was all about the slap!! With the slapcountodwn slowly ticking down until 3:01pm, a nervous Barney did all he could to convince Marshall that the slap really wasn’t necessary on Thanksgiving. Slap Bet Commissioner Lily agreed and called a moratorium on slapping for the holiday. Marshall was bummed (me too). But lucky for all of us, Barney’s gloating bated Lily enough that she lifted the respite with one second left on the clock, and Marshall’s slap left Barney on the floor. And as every Slapsgiving should, the night ended with a song around the piano. (Check out the music video for “You Just Got Slapped”)

For those of you who have no idea what the Slap Bet is, take a minute to check this out.

Let’s talk about HEROES & JOURNEYMAN after the jump…

Saturday Night Live Was Live Again This Weekend

Saturday Night Live, Live Show, Michael Cera, SNL

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve heard “Live from New York it’s Saturday night!” but some lucky folks in NYC  got to hear those famous words this weekend as the cast and crew of the SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE came together in a one night event to help raise funds for the SNL crew members who were laid off due to the WGA strike.

The event, held at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater was put together in part by SNL star and UCB founder, Amy Poehler.  Nearly the entire cast and crew came together for the events, and even SNL creator Lorne Michaels was in attendance (in the audience enjoying the show).

Guest host Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Superbad) opened his monologue saying,”It’s so great to be hosting Saturday Night Live!” (Looks around, trails off.) “I admit that I thought it would be nicer.” The show, which lasted just over two hours, was made up of old and new material and brought to life new sketches that never made it to air. Yo La Tengo was the musical guest.

Those lucky enough to land the super hot tickets only had to pay $20 for admittance (although personally I think they would have sold out charging $100/ticket).  There were some familiar faces in the audience including Amy Poehler’s husband, Will Arnett (Arrested Development, Blades of Glory), Will’s BFF OFFICE star, John Krasinski, and 30 ROCK’S Jack McBrayer, who was participating in a live stage show of 30 ROCK this weekend (more on that when details emerge).

The Huffington Post has a full write up by someone who was in the audience with a break down of the whole night including all the sketches.  It’s a great read. Enjoy. (Click here to read)

WGA Strike: Pencils2MediaMoguls Campaign

Pencils2MediaMoguls is a campaign endorsed by UnitedHollywood.com in support of the WGA to give the fans a voice in the current negotiation between the Writers Guild of America and the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers. All pencils purchased through this widget will be sent to the moguls who run the big six media conglomerates. Along with every delivery of pencils will also be contact information for non-profits who deal with child literacy. If the moguls refuse delivery of the pencils, United Hollywood will donate the pencils themselves. Any money left over after the deliveries are complete will be donated to the Union Solidarity Fund, an assistance fund set up to aid union members not in the WGA affected by the strike. Make your voice heard! We’re all on the same page.United Hollywood, Strike Points and some of the showrunners of your favorite TV shows decided that this is one way that fans can help support the cause and the writers.

(You can donate more than one box in support of your favorite show by changing the quantity of the boxes donated after you hit ‘Buy Now’. To support more than one show, just keep the PayPal window opened and come back to GMMR to enter another show name and hit submit ‘Buy Now’ again. All your donations will end up on one page.)

Personally, I’m not sure this is the most effective way for fans to be heard but this along with other fan efforts can do nothing but help the cause of the writers. I am supporting the campaign and the WGA in this way and if feel inclined, I encourage you to do the same.

Comments…
If you decide to support the WGA in this manner, please leave a comment and share with us which shows you supported by donating pencils. If you disagree with this manner of support, that’s fine too, but a simple “I disagree” works just as well as a self indulgent, nasty diatribe that is only going to get your comment deleted (ah, the beauty of having your own blog).

For more on this campaign please continue reading after the jump.

TV Blog Weekly Roundup – November 16th-18th

TV Blog Coalition

Yeah, there might be a writers strike looming but that doesn’t mean there’s not a ton of TV news to talk about. Every Sunday GiveMeMyRemote.com will be teaming up with some of the best TV bloggers to bring you a wrap of all the latest TV news and gossip.

BuzzSugar: This week, we debated the greatest TV icons (no Sesame Street or Saget?), felt a little underwhelmed by the new Lost mobisodes, and wondered if late-night shows should have guest hosts to save jobs during the writers’ strike.

Daemon’s TV: Sandie welcomed everyone to the Chuck train after watching Gossip Girl. Araya realizes what it’s like to feel things after watching Friday Night Lights. And after watching Heroes Araya wished he had a power.

Give Me My Remote: It broke our hearts to recap what could have been the last episode of The Office this season (a moment of silence). At least we still have Pushing Daisies to make us happy, at least for a few more eps. And before hitting the scene this weekend, check out our Cocktail Party Primer and be in the loop on the latest TV soundbytes.

Glowy Box: When she wasn’t on strike to support the WGA, Liz shuddered over a pencil in the eye on Grey’s Anatomy and enjoyed Tyra’s attempt to overshadow the Project Runway premiere on America’s Next Top Model.

Mikey Likes TV: IFC’s bizarre role-playing documentary, Darkon, premiered this week, and Mikey wishes more reality TV would explore characters who are that uniquely crazy. He also lamented the premature (and seriously depressing) season finale of The Office.

Writers & Studios to Resume Talks

In what can only be seen as a step in the right direction, the WGA and the AMPTP have agreed to go back to the table to discuss the outstanding issues on November 26th. Let’s hope that both sides can come to a fair resolution.

The to WGA strike captains posted at United Hollywood:

TV Bloggers Strike The effort and energy and resolve of the strike captains and teams, on the line, in headquarters, on location, and out in the community including the blogosphere has had a tremendous impact, and been instrumental in bringing the companies back to the bargaining table. Congratulations! Of course, going back to the table is an important step; but we must not allow our effort and creativity to wane. The strike must continue and we must continue to increase our impact and message to get the best possible deal for writers and for others who will benefit from our struggle, including actors, directors, drivers, crew, etc.

Mindy Kaling

It’s been well established on this blog that I am horribly selfish. So it should come as no surprise when I tell you that in the first few days of the strike, when I was trying to keep things really positive, I actually thought (more than a few times) ‘hey, if The Office goes on strike at least Mindy Kaling will have more time to blog‘. I know, I know. I should have been more concerned with the writers, the crew and their families, and I am, but I’m also shallow.

But then a week went by without an update from Mindy and I got nervous. I was very concerned that she was also giving up writing her blog during the strike. Hell, I even asked Office writers Mike Schur and Jen Celotta about it during the OT chat. I visited her site about 10 times a day (yup, definitely not more than 10 times a day…really) in hopes that she would update. And guess what? Today she has. Phew!!

If you’re not reading Mindy’s shopping blog, you should. I know we’ve discussed this a few times before, but I wanted to remind you again. I’m glad that she’s back blogging and it seems that she’s not going to let a pesky little thing like a lack of a paycheck stop her from shopping. From Mindy:

So I spent the first two weeks of strike picketing and thinking: will I turn ascetic as my income disappears? Will I get my hair cut at Fantastic Sams rather than at John Freida? Will I watch “The Closer” on repeats or will I continue spending $14 on tickets at the Arclight?

The answer is no, people. I will go into horrible, debilitating debt. And why? The handfuls of people who read this blog must be entertained. (continue reading)

Thank you, Mindy!! I am one of those people and I AM entertained. And if you are home in Boston for the holidays and need a shopping friend…call me!!

The Cocktail Party Primer (Episode #15)

The thing is, work stoppages, and the mistreated employees there involved, aren’t generally very funny. There’s a reason you’ve never been in a bar and someone has launched into a particularly witty anecdote concerning the Cripple Creek miner’s strike of 1894. Heck, I’ve been trying to write a joke about Ellen for two weeks, and every time I think about it, I just end up making myself sad. If you’ve got any brilliant bon mots, by all means, pass them on. Until then, here’s the dirt that’s fit to print to guide your gossipy tongues through the weekend.

  • Right after the first season of Project Runway wrapped up, I got the flu. Not the “feel yuck for 72 hours” flu, the “run over by a semi and wish it would come back and finish the job” flu. At the time, Bravo was running a seemingly endless loop of the show, and I absorbed it through the specific sort of haze that develops from a 104 degree fever and codeine-laced cough syrup. I still like the show, and in these grim times, I was particularly thrilled to welcome it back, even though I’ll never understand why outfits so ugly they make my gorge rise sometimes get a pass. That thing designed by Marion? That was a punishment, not a dress; I’m sure Coco Chanel rolled over in her grave. But still, I’m glad to have the show in my ever-shrinking rotation, even though I sure miss the swirling colors and awesome little fairy creatures I remember featuring prominently in season one.
  • As a youngster, I loved game shows. The memories of afternoons I whiled away hollering “No whammies, no whammies, no whammies, stop!” at the TV are dear to me. I still harbor a secret desire to go on Jeopardy some day. But most of the recent crop leaves me cold. Am I smarter than a fifth grader? If one must ask, one will never know. The ones in the pipeline to fill soon to be empty timeslots are even less enthralling to my tastes. Of course, there’s Moment of Truth, based on the Columbian show where a woman admitted to hiring a hitman to kill her husband. Or perhaps you’d prefer there’s Do You Trust Me?, hosted by that bowtie wearing twit Tucker Carlson. He’ll reveal shocking secrets from the players’ pasts to make their teammates trust them less, not that I’m much inclined to trust what the smug little wanker says either. Then there’s German-based Wanna Bet? where celebrities wager on stunt-performing contestants. Obviously, this would be much funnier if contestants wagered on stunt-performing celebrities. Even I’d tune in to see Steve Carrell eat a hoagie while bungee jumping.

So I’m trying to stay positive about the strike, and I have a suggestion for NBC (even thought I’m mad at you right now). Here’s what NBC needs to do…start re-airing FRIDAY NIGHT NIGHTS from the very beginning and promote the hell out of it. I mean, don’t fake promote it like you’ve done in the past, I’m talking a promotion like CHUCK had this season. You have more cash in your pocket since (a) you’re getting all that money from the internet ad sales and (b) you’re not paying any of the actors on your shows. Think about it, even though it may be a re-run it’s new to most people. It’s a win-win-win. A win for the network, a win for the writers (who will get paid in residuals) and a win for the new viewers who haven’t yet experienced the show.

Friday Night Lights | 9pm on NBC
Friday Night Lights“Pantherama”
Smash’s college recruitment officially begins; Matt is tempted by his grandma’s nurse even though he has a new girlfriend; Julie befriends a teacher; Lyla and Tyra work on an event together at Tami’s bidding.

Moonlight | 9pm on CBS
Moonlight“12:04am”
Mick tries to protect a woman from a murderous cult after its leader is executed and his followers vow to kill those responsible for his death.

I don’t know about you, but after last week’s big reveal that Coraline is back, I’ve found myself obsessing about this show all week. So much more into it than I thought I would be at the beginning of the season. Of course I’d like to see a little more Jason Dohring, but I’m happy enough just to see him every week. But if they really want to make me happy they could find a way to kill off Beth (sorry but Sophia Myles is just way too stiff and she comes across really false).

Take a quick look at a scene from tonight’s MOONLIGHT.

Also on…

  • Ghost Whisperer | 8pm on CBS
  • Men in Trees | 8pm on ABC
  • Women’s Murder Club | 9pm on NBC
  • Numb3rs | 10pm on ABC
  • Las Vegas | 10pm on NBC
  • Next Great American Band | 8pm on Fox

GREY’S ANATOMY – The High School Years

November 16, 2007 by
Filed under Grey's Anatomy, Grey's Anatomy Recap

Remember that guy/girl you dated in high school? The one that broke your heart but you kept getting back together with because you thought ‘this time it will be different’…he/she has learned their lesson and I won’t be hurt again? That’s kind of how I’m feeling about GREY’S ANATOMY this season. But now I’m older and wiser and I’m more skeptical when we have fantastic episodes like the one we had last night. Has this show really changes or is it only pretending to change to win me back?

Last season’s demise into soap opera trash hurt me and I’m not sure our relationship will ever be the same. But lately, Grey’s has slowly started showing characteristics of the show that I once loved so dearly. I’m still missing the humor a bit, but the character interactions and focus back a bit more on the patients has really got me wondering if this show is back…I mean really back? And if so, can we make this relationship work?

When a bus filled with high school kids crashes, the doctors of Seattle Grace are forced to consider who they were in their formative years and really look at how far they’ve come, or not, since their HS days. And as Rose (Derek’s soon to be new lady love?) so clearly pointed out, Seattle Grace isn’t that much different than high school. There are still the cool kids, the misfits, the brains, and the cliques.

The Office Recap: The Deposition

The Office - The Deposition

So, Lester Lewis. From what I hear you wrote tonight’s episode of THE OFFICE. A newbie, right? Your first episode? Well here’s what you need to know: You may be a new “cool kid” in the writer’s room. You may get to hang with Gene and Lee and Brent and you might even be on B.J.’s speed dial (well probably not, because it’s B.J. and I don’t think B.J. Novak lets just anyone in his Fave 5). You may be able to walk on to the set of The Office and not be stopped by the security guard who has to remind you that a judge once said that you can never be closer than 300 ft of John Krasinski. But you know what? I’ve been around longer. I’ve been a dedicated fan of this show before you were even born (ok that’s a lie), but since this is my favorite show I feel I have the authority to tell you exactly what I thought of your attempt at writing tonight’s script. And I have one word and only one word for you…Bravo!

If I have to go without The Office for the unforeseen future, I’m glad the show went out in style tonight. It was all the best things of The Office rolled into one really tight half hour of television. We had cute Jim and Pam moments, we had Michael hating on Toby, we had a few ‘that’s what she said’s’, and we had Kelly Kapoor being very Kapoorish, and Michael being dumb, vulnerable and loyal. This viewer was left satisfied and smiling (a gift from me to you).

Matt Czuchry, best known as Rory’s rich boy love on the dearly departed GILMORE GIRLS, will be showing up in Dillon, Texas as a devout Christian later this season on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Word is that he’ll be around for at least a three episode arc. I’m hoping there will be a little lovey dovey with Lyla Garrity…as long as she stays away from Riggins it’s fine by me.

The Office on Strike

Tonight’s the night. The last new episode of THE OFFICE until…well, who knows? With the WGA strike not yet settled we don’t know when the writers will be able to once again tell the tales of Pam, Jim, Michael, Dwight, Angela, Oscar, Kevin, Meredith, Creed, Stanley, Phyllis, Andy, Toby, Kelly, Jan, Darryl and yes, even Ryan. My favorite show on TV is going dark at 9:30pm tonight and I’m just sad.I guess we might as well enjoy it while we can, right? So let’s get into our weekly installment of The Office Thursday on Give Me My Remote, shall we?

Tonight on The Office…
The Office, The Deposition‘The Deposition’ | 9pm on NBC
Michael finds himself between a rock and a hard place when Jan sues Dunder Mifflin and Michael is deposed as a witness. Meanwhile, Kelly trash-talks Pam after Darryl beats Jim at ping-pong. (Promo pictures)

LIVE Office Chat Tonight…
This will be the last Thursday the Buddy TV crew will be watching the show together for a while. If you feel like enjoying tonight’s episode along with other Office fans, we would love to have you join us tonight at 8:30pm EST. Hope to see you guys there tonight. Set a reminder now! ( GMMR’s/THE OFFICE TVj sessions @ Buddy TV)

Paper Salesmen are Hot…
Rainn WilsonDwight & Jim are steaming up the newsstands this month. Well maybe not Dwight and Jim but certainly Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski. Rainn was named one of People Magazine’s sexiest men alive and he was featured in a behind-the-scenes video you can check out HERE. I haven’t seen the full mag yet so I don’t know if John was included but he may be as he was featured in a People.com video called 100 Sexy Men in 1 Minute. John has been included in the list for the past two years now and was featured as one of the top 15 sexiest men in 2006 by the magazine.

John Krasinski, Men’s HealthEven if Krasinski doesn’t make the cut (which would be all kinds of wrong) you can still see him as the cover boy for this month’s issue of Men’s Health Magazine. The article inside (yes, I actually read the article) John talks about how sports have been a part of his fitness routine his whole life. The pics feature John wearing vintage uniforms from baseball, basketball, and even a shot of him in his uniform from his upcoming movie, Leatherheads (opening in April). Check out the interior shots here. And here’s a glimpse at the two covers.

I Knew I Loved THE OFFICE When…
Diversity DayMost OFFICE fans remember just the episode when they knew this show was destined to be a favorite. I actually have two. The first is “Diversity Day” (written by B.J. Novak) – I had watched the pilot the week before and thought it was awful (I was one of those U.K. version fans that wanted to hate the U.S. version). I had no intention of watching the 2nd episode but the next week when I flipped on my TV it was there. A few minutes in I was laughing my ass off, and until this day I still think ‘Diversity Days’ is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my whole life. Brilliant. So with that episode I was hooked. But I realized my true, deep, undying love for the show during ‘Email Surveillance’ (written by Jennifer Celotta). I remember watching the karaoke scene with Jim and Michael and something just clicked and I realized that The Office was my favorite show on all of TV. And the rest is history. Was there an episode of THE OFFICE that got you hooked? Share your story, and take the time to let us know who wrote the script!

Pushing Daisies is What I Need To Be Happy

November 15, 2007 by

If you are watching PUSHING DAISIES and haven’t yet fallen completely head over heels in love with Ned the Pie Maker I think you should ask someone close by to check your pulse to see if you are still in fact alive. Ok, well I suppose if you’re a straight guy your exempt, but I think even the straight boys have a little bit of a man crush.

Last night’s episode was just another stellar example of why this is the best new show on television. The writing was pitch perfect, the visuals just stunning and the acting superb. And the romance, ah, the romance. And don’t forget the polygamy! What, there’s plenty of romance among polygamists…haven’t you ever seen Big Love?

Here’s the deal, if you aren’t watching PUSHING DAISIES by now, with all the begging and the pleading that I’ve been doing since before the show even aired, then I’m not sure I’m going to convince you. But for all you who are watching and loving it, I think we must discuss a few of the best moments of last night.

The opening dream sequence scene. Holy Mother of Pie!! I was spoiled that it was a dream so it lost a little bit of its magic, but what started off as the sweetest of sweet moments quickly turned hot and steamy and then oddly creepy. Did you hear the sound of heartbreak and despair when he thought he lost Chuck again? And the “Oh my god, your skin is amazing” line…damn! I think we have to watch again (and again, and again), no?

What a way to die. Only on Pushing Daisies does a guy die not from the poison his wife put in his coffee but rather because after he dropped said coffee he slipped over and over again on the liquid each time falling into a sharp dog brush handle on the desk in front of him. It was Pushing Daisies signature dark humor at its best.
