So apparently, there’s some kind of strike or something going on. Know anything about it? I mean, it’s such a minor thing I’m sure you probably haven’t heard anything at all— who am I kidding? It’s all strike all the time in the world of TV this week. I’m trying not to panic. Sure, I’ve draped black crepe over my TiVo and have stockpiled the BBC’s Robin Hood, two back seasons of Dead Zone, my extensive collection of PBS documentaries, the entire run of Pinky and The Brain, and 3 gallons of gin to help me through the duration. I’ve also go reams of various Law & Orders in a sealed box marked “Open in case of emergency,” but I wouldn’t define any of that as panicking. Yet. Here’s a few key tidbits from the thing we’re all talking about this week, whether we like it or not.
- Maybe I just have the longest attention span in the universe, but I don’t think this season of Heroes has been boring at all. I’ve enjoyed the slow building of story threads and characters, and I’ve assumed it’s all going to come together in a fulfilling way. As it turns out, I am utterly alone in this sentiment. After weeks of viewers bemoaning the slow pacing and lack of high stakes, producer Tim Kring actually apologized in the pages of Entertainment Weekly. I wonder if we should all feel spoiled when a show creator has to apologize for his show being a merely above average level of awesome and not the ass-whomping mega-awesome we have come to expect. Of course, this comes from a girl who genuinely enjoys what she calls British “murder most moderate” shows about unspectacular crimes that unfold at a snail’ place in picturesque English villages, so I’m comfortable saying my opinion probably doesn’t count.
- I have a list. A list of the dead, you might call it. It’s a list of shows I, and apparently, I alone, really loved that got cancelled early and with extreme prejudice (I’m looking at you Andy Richter Controls the Universe.) It happens often enough (Hey there Kitchen Confidential!) that I have come suspect that sheer force of affection (Je t’aime, Clone High) might be in some way responsible. Perhaps there’s a cabal of TV execs who sit around plotting ways to bum me out (Hasta la vista, The Handler). I know, it sounds paranoid, but just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean nobody’s out to get you. It’s a very long list (John Doe, Invader Zim, Jake in Progress). So with that in mind, I’ve discovered a silver lining to the writer’s strike. Life and Journeyman, two shows I knew were doomed the moment I realized how much liked them have been given temporary reprieves, just to keep something on the air. Of course, the strike ensures these, and basically every other show, are inevitably hopeless this season, so I’m trying not to be invested. When you’re the sort of person who was foolish enough to enjoy The Dresden Files, you know better than to get attached.
- I heard in passing that Stephen Colbert actually ranked higher Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul in a presidential poll, and it’s so fantastic and absurd, I almost didn’t want to actually fact check it, just in case it wasn’t true. Turns out it was, but that quirky little tidal wave of what I suspect is primarily ironic support won’t be able to come to anything. Alas, Stephen Colbert has dropped out of the presidential race on the heels of being rejected for inclusion on the South Carolina Democratic Primary ballot (not to mention losing the comedy writers so essential for running a comedy presidential campaign). Although, between Mike Huckabee’s crazy diet plans, Paul’s aura of crazy old coot, and the fact that Kucinich is a tiny little troll man married to a babe, I sometimes get the impression Colbert isn’t the only one running on a joke.
- Sorry 24 fans, but you didn’t need a mole in the CTU to know that this season just wasn’t meant to be. First, the writers had to scrap all their scripts and start over because everything they had sucked. Then the star got busted for DUI. Delay piled upon delay. This week, Fox finally announced that they’re giving up the ghost and postponing Day 7 until next season because of, you guessed it, the strike. Without a seventh season to keep him busy, maybe Jack Bauer can rush to our rescue, hog-tie the studio heads and force them to play nice with the WGA. If he was feeling super special, maybe he’d do me a solid save Life and Journeyman while he was at it. Sigh. Even a girl with obscure, boring tastes can dream, can’t she?

BIONIC WOMAN Recap: The List

Title: “The List”
Original Airdate: 11.7.07
GMMR Recapper: Jo
Paris, a Cylon, a little loving and we have our first interesting episode. Brownie points if you can correctly explain why. Answer at the end in my grip section.
Boring B-plot. Boring, because it was all about the whiny sister, whose name I’ve yet to learn. Fingers crossed that in the strike time, the writers get the brilliant idea to kill her off. A mental note only of course. Boring sister throws party to get some boy who brought another girl to the party. Boo hoo. So naturally she bails, drives the car without a license and under the influence, but gets as far as backing over the curb before the cop who was just outta frame flipped his lights on. Jonas has to bail her out of jail, gives her the “I’m not your father, but” slash “Jaime has her secrets, leave it be” speech and doesn’t tell on her.

34th Annual People’s Choice Award Nominees (TV)

The nominees have been announced for the 34th annual People’s Choice Awards. Take a look at the list and just guess what network the awards show is on? My favorites are in red (and picking a favorite in some of these categories was painful). I had to add a few that were egregiously “missing” from each category.
- Favorite TV Drama: “CSI,” “House,” “Law and Order: SVU” [Missing: Friday Night Lights, Grey’s Anatomy]
- Favorite TV Comedy: “The King of Queens,” “My Name is Earl,” “Two and a Half Men” [Missing: 30 Rock, The Office, Ugly Betty]
- Favorite Animated TV Comedy: “Family Guy,” “King of the Hill,” “The Simpsons”
- Favorite Sci-Fi Show: “Battlestar Galactica,” “Doctor Who,” “Stargate Atlantis”
- Favorite Competition/Reality Show: “American Idol,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” [Missing: So You Think You Can Dance, The Amazing Race]
- Favorite Game Show: “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” “Deal or No Deal,” “Jeopardy”
- Favorite Female TV Star: Sally Field (“Brothers & Sisters”), Katherine Heigl (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Jennifer Love Hewitt (“Ghost Whisperer”) [Missing: Hayden Panetiterre, Alyson Hannigan, Kate Walsh, Chandra Wilson, Jenna Fischer, Tine Fey, Angela Kinsey, Connie Britton, America Ferrera]
- Favorite Male TV Star: Patrick Dempsey (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Charlie Sheen (“Two and a Half Men”), Kiefer Sutherland (“24”) [Missing: Steve Carell, Alec Baldwin, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, T.R. Knight, Kyle Chandler, Wentworth Miller, Hugh Laurie]
- Favorite Scene Stealing Star: Richard Belzer from “Law & Order: SVU,” Neil Patrick Harris from “How I Met Your Mother,” Chandra Wilson from “Grey’s Anatomy” [Missing: Rainn Wilson, Michael Urie, Jack McBrayer, Rex Lee, Jesse Plemmons]
- Favorite New TV Comedy: Aliens in America; Back to You; The Big Bang Theory; Carpoolers; Cavemen; Chuck; Reaper; Samantha Who?
- Favorite New TV Drama: Big Shots; Bionic Woman; Cane; Dirty Sexy Money; Gossip Girl; Journeyman; K-Ville; Life; Life Is Wild; Moonlight; Private Practice; Pushing Daisies; Women’s Murder Club
- Favorite Talk Show Host: Ellen DeGeneres, Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey [Missing: Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson, David Letterman]
If you haven’t yet guessed, the PCA’s are on CBS. I thought “The King of Queens” in the Favorite Comedy and Jennifer Love Hewitt in the Favorite Female TV Star was a dead giveaway. And um, Richard Belzer as Favorite Scene Stealer….what?!
I’m going to go vote now. I need to show some of the newbies like CHUCK and PUSHING DAISIES the love. To vote: http://www.pcavote.com/pca/index.jsp.
The Transformation of Jim Halpert
November 9, 2007 by Kath Skerry
Filed under Jim Halpert, The Office
STOP! This post is really only for diehard OFFICE fans who will forgive me for this perhaps unnecessary keyboardic diatribe on the emotional growth of Jim Halpert. If you choose to continue please know that I am fully aware that James Halpert is a fictional character. And yes, sometimes I scare myself that I put so much thought into this person that doesn’t really exist. Only true Office fans and real TV addicts will understand me. (And yes I am proud for bringing ‘keyboardic diatribe’ into the lexicon.)
“He’s content with the money he makes, but though he could probably leave whenever he wants to,”the thing that keeps him there is Pam. He really believes he’s found someone he really, really cares about. It’s not just a crush,” he says. “I think you realize over the course of the episodes that it isn’t something he enjoys, it’s something he finds that he needs. … [The job] is not about the excitement for him, it’s about, Do I have everything I need, and every time he runs through that checklist, he’s got it.”
The above is a quote from an interview with John Krasinski back in 2005 as he spoke about how he perceived Jim Halpert’s lot in life and his contentment at Dunder Mifflin. Fast forward to 2007 and I wonder if Krasinski would describe Jim’s mindset in the same way. The writers have been subtly pulling back the layers of Jim Halpert since day one of the show, and now it seems that Jim Halpert is starting to see that maybe there’s a little more to life than what he had on his little checklist.
THE OFFICE Recap: “Survivor Man”
November 9, 2007 by Kath Skerry

I found myself very sad watching last night’s episode of THE OFFICE. Of course it was funny and I was laughing out loud, but every time I laughed I was reminded that after next week, there is no telling when we will see a new episode of my favorite show. But let’s enjoy The Office while we still can.
Last night’s episode, “Survivor Man”, was written by Steve Carell and was directed by Paul Fieg. Much like “Casino Night”, the last episode written by Carell, the whole cast was utilized and the show was better for it. I personally think The Office is at it’s best when the whole ensemble is part of the storyline. There are so many talented people over there that when they are left in the background it seems like such a waste. And I mention the direction by Paul Fieg because I thought last night’s episode was particularly well directed. The episode as a whole was really tight and Fieg kept the reigns in on a script that with a lesser director could have really gotten out of control.
No need for an extensive recap because I doubt anyone reading this hasn’t seen the show. But in short, after being excluded from a corporate retreat in favor of Toby, Michael decides to find himself and show just how strong he is by surviving for a few days in the wilderness all by himself. The wilderness is the woods of Scranton, a few days is a few hours, and by himself means with Dwight unknowingly watching his every move.
GREY’S ANATOMY Recap: Physical Attraction…Chemical Reaction

George & Izzie haters around the world are dancing around with joy this morning praising bad sex!! All hail bad sex!! Could this finally be the end for this pairing that has just gone so wrong in the eyes of the viewers? And what all about the sex that the others staff members of Seattle Grace Hospital are having, or in the case of McSteamy, want to have? And really, just how sterile is that hospital with all the sex that’s happening there? So yes, George and Izzie had sex for the second time since their drunken encounter a few months back, and it was bad, really bad – all 500 times they tried. But is their love strong enough to deal with the bad sex? Nope! Last night we saw the beginning of the end for Gizzie, but I think it is going to be handled in such a way the two will go back to being really great friends when all is said and done. As friends, I adore these two. As a couple…not so much. I’m just wondering when Shonda and team might explore Izzie’s obvious issues with falling in love at the drop of the hat. You know it goes back to her trailer park days. But I guess with the strike we won’t be seeing any of that anytime soon.
UGLY BETTY Recap: A Nice Day for a Posh Wedding
November 9, 2007 by Kath Skerry
Filed under Ugly Betty, Ugly Betty Recap
It was early Friday morning by the time I got to see all my Thursday night favorites, but all and all it was well worth the last of sleep. Here’s my quick take of last night’s TV for me.
The long awaited wedding of Whilemna Slater and Bradford Meade went off without a hitch, well except for the part where the Maid of Honor was locked in a closet, the ceremony was interrupted not once but twice and the groom had a heart attack and collapsed on the alter. Maybe ‘without a hitch’ isn’t the phrase I was looking for.
All and all a pretty fabulous and over the top episode of Ugly Betty. Victoria Beckham’s guest appearance was “Beck-mmm”. Amanda’s mid-wedding homage to Kelis was inspired. And Christina’s is about to be scammed by her estranged husband who is supposedly dying and needs a $100,000 for experimental surgery. Just another day at Mode Magazine.
What to Watch…Friday, November 9, 2007

I only watch two shows on Friday night. While MOONLIGHT has captured my interest we all know that FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is my love. Hands down it is the best drama on TV. And I know I’ve been a Debbie Downer lately with all the strike talk but I just call it as I see it. And my call here is that unless the strike ends very soon, I think the next few episodes is all we might see of Friday Night Lights. I think NBC might use the strike as a way to ‘clean house’ and get rid of the shows that aren’t preforming well in the ratings. I hope that isn’t the case but you never know. The holds true for MOONLIGHT and all the freshman series.
Please tune in tonight and show the networks that you care about quality scripted television.
And in the words to The Office’s Jenna Fischer, “Let’s end the strike for Riggins”…amen sister!!
Friday Night Lights | 9pm on NBC
“How Did I Get Here”
Building pressure forces Landry to tell his dad the truth about the killing; the arrival of Tami’s sister (Jessalyn Gilsig) prompts Tami to reexamine the life she’s leading; and Riggins has something to prove after he’s kicked off the team.
Moonlight | 9pm on CBS
“The Ringer”
Mick investigates an arson that destroys a legendary Hollywood hotel. The probe is made more mysterious when Mick realizes the fire eerily replicates the circumstances under which his former wife, Coraline, died.

THE OFFICE Thursday on Give Me My Remote
November 8, 2007 by Kath Skerry
So much has changed since last week’s THE OFFICE Thursday post. Most notably – THE OFFICE has been shut down and Season 4 of the show is no longer in production. It’s almost surreal, right? Each and every week during the summer we’d meet here on Thursday and countdown the days until our favorite show returned. It feels like we just got the show back and now it’s gone again. Here’s to hoping that the WGA strike comes to resolve sooner rather than later and we enjoy the antics of Dunder Mifflin soon.
GiveMeMyRemote.com wishes nothing but the best to not only the writers, but the actors, directors, and each and every crew member affected by the strike.
In the meantime, let’s really cherish these next two episodes because who knows when we’ll see our favorites again.
Tonight on THE OFFICE…
‘Survivor Man’ | 9pm on NBC
New chieftain Ryan organizes a woodsy corporate retreat—but he excludes Michael, who in turn enters into the wilderness for his own survival adventure. Meanwhile, Jim tries to put a new spin on office birthday parties. (Watch scenes from tonight’s episode)
Dunder Mifflin Closes Its Doors…
As you all know, THE OFFICE has been shut down. It’s a sad day for all those involved including the fans. While I know at the end of the day it’s not about us, there is no denying that fans play an important role in all of this. I mean without the fans there really wouldn’t be the need for writers, right? But right now Greg, Mindy, BJ, Michael, Jen, Brent, Justin, Paul, Gene, Lee, Steve, and all the other writers that make the show so very special to all of us need our support. There are a few ways you can help.
- Be Informed: Take the time to learn about the strike so you can help educate others. Read up on the issues at sites such as WGA.org and UnitedHollywood.com. OfficeTally.com is doing an impressive job at keeping track of all the strike news related to the show. Updates are daily so check back often.
- Put pen to paper: Is THE OFFICE your favorite show? Have you ever just wanted to take a moment and really thank the writers, actors, crew and everyone who makes the show what it is? Well NOW is your chance. The best possible way to express your gratitude to all involved with The Office is to take a few minutes out of your day and write a letter in support of the show and the strike. Tell the networks just how much The Office and all quality scripted shows means to you as a viewer. Be passionate and be informed – you won’t be ignored – the moguls need you…us!

- Stop watching The Office online at NBC.com: At the heart of the strike is the fact that the writers (and actors, directors, crew, etc) don’t make a single cent from any of the viewings of THE OFFICE and OFFICE-related content on NBC.com. In fact, NBC considers full length airings of the show as well as all the other online content “promotional” material for the show. Except of course the network makes money off the ads shown in these “promos” and don’t feel it’s necessary to share any of this revenue with the people that actually create the content. Stop letting the network websites makes money off of you unless they are going to share with the people behind the show.
OFFICE writers Talk to Fans…
Last night I was lucky enough to be in the Office Tally Chat Room as Office writers and producers, Michael Schur & Jen Celotta, answered fans questions about the strike and the future of The Office. When asked what Office fans could do to help support the WGA, Michael and Jen both stressed the importance of writing letters to the networks. They both took the time to explain many of the issues behind the strike and what it really means to all involved. Please take the time to read the full transcript of the chat HERE. I think you will find it highly informative. (Warning, there are a few very minor spoilers for episodes that won’t be airing due to the strike). Special thanks to Jen & Mike for taking the time to keep Office fans informed.

The WGA strike is bringing people together – even those vying for our attention on Monday night.
Finally, a positive development to come out of the writers strike: A kumbayah moment between bitter Monday night 8 p.m. rivals “Chuck” and “How I Met Your Mother.”
OK, not so bitter. But rivals, yes. On the picket line, however, “Chuck” creator Josh Schwartz (center) and “How I Met Your Mother” creators Craig Thomas (left) and Carter Bays (right) were united as showrunners Wednesday morning in front of Disney.
Could a “Chuck” — “HIMYM” crossover episode be far behind? Was a “Robin Sparkles” music video among the government images downloaded into Chuck’s brain? Check back post-strike. (Source: Variety)

Fellow AMERICAN IDOL star Carrie Underwood was a big winner taking home the award for Single of the Year for “Before He Cheats” and Female Vocalist of the Year.
