LIVE Blogging the SAG Awards
January 27, 2008 by Kath Skerry
Here we go…the first big awards event of the season. I’ve just spent the past two hours checking out the red carpet arrivals and I hope you liked the pics I’ve posted. Definitely let us all know what you thought of tonight’s red carpet looks. But now it’s time to start the awards, and I’ll be live blogging through the whole show and I hope that you’ll leave your thoughts and comments as you watch along with me. For those of you coming late to the show, the latest commentary will be at the bottom of this page. Whew, I’m already tired.
- Sally Field, Doug Savant, Ellen Burstyn, Sandra Oh, Rebecca Romijn, Jane Krakowski, and Kyle MacLachlan opened the show with funny ditties about becoming an actor. What I would give to hear Johnny Depp say “Me want food!”
- Steve Carell and Tina Fey show the start off right by presenting the SAG award for Best Actor in a Drama to James Gandolfino of THE SOPRANOS
- OMG my computer just crashed…oh holy hell that sucked. I’m a few minutes behind, but haven’t missed any awards…sorry about that.
- Debra Messing and Zac Efron are about to give Glenn Close the award for Best Actress in a Drama for her role in DAMAGES. I kind of wish Sally Field would take it, but that’s just me. Here comes the announcement and the SAG goes to…Edie Falco of THE SOPRANOS!! WOW, that was kind of a surprise. But I guess the actors want to honor the mobsters for the final time.
- First commercial break…ok, so did anyone see Brad and Angelina on the red carpet? You think those rumors about her being pregnant again could be true? She was wearing a very flowy dress that certainly covered up whatever needed to be covered up. And let’s face it, Angelina Jolie doesn’t need to cover anything up.
- UGLY BETTY’s Vanessa Williams and CSI’s William Peterson are presenting the award for Outstanding Ensemble – Drama (wow, nothing like getting the TV awards out of the way early). I’m hoping this one goes to MAD MEN but the way the night’s going so far it could be THE SOPRANOS. And the SAG goes to the cast of THE SOPRANOS (zzzz…zzzzz). Sorry, I know it’s a nice gesture, but I’m sad that the other shows were overlooked.
- The first movie of the award of the night is going to Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role and I’d be shocked if this one doesn’t go to Javier Bardem. There’s some amazing actors in this category, and sadly I haven’t seen one of the films. And as predicted by many, the SAG goes to Javier Bardem.
- Is anyone else surprised that there hasn’t been one mention of the WGA strike as of yet? I know there will be a statement made by the SAG President later, but I thought everyone would have mentioned them in their speech. And why am I already dreading any kind of tribute to Heath Ledger? I was watching Brokeback Mountain today and got all kinds of teary.
- Another TV award is up. Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series – please please please let it be Tina Fey. Interesting that America and Vanessa are up for the same category for the same show. And the SAG goes to Tina Fey. YES!!!
- Now it’s all about the funny men – Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series – I’m ok with almost any of these guys winning tonight, but I’ll be really happy is Steve or Ricky win. Ok, I take that back, if Tony Shaloub wins I will cry real tears. And the SAG goes to Alec Baldwin. Better next year, Steve. You’re still the best to me.
- Dexter’s Michael C. Hall and Big Love’s Jeanne Triplehorn are presenting the Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series. I think you all know where my heart lies, but I think it’s going to the cast of 30 Rock this year. And (fingers crossed) the SAG goes to THE OFFICE. YAY!!!!!!Ok, my night is made. Jenna is speaking and she’s absolutely lovely!! Angela looks amazing with her baby bump. And that John Kraslowski (or whatever his name is) doesn’t look to shabby either.
- SAG President Alan Rosenberg is going to finally talk about the WGA strike. Did you all know he is married to CSI’s Marg Helgenberg? Short, sweet and made the statement clear. On to the actors and the awards.
- Denis Leary is honoring Charles Durning. I’m a horrible person but this is my cue to take a break to get some water. Come on, I’ve been live blogging for hours without a break 😉 Be back in just a minute. Ok, that was a nice tribute, and I had no idea what an honored serviceman Charles Durning is. Nice speech. But man, this is already a long awards show. Let’s move on the movie awards and be done with it.
- Holly Hunter and James Spader and presenting the award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Miniseries or TV series to Kevin Kline for some movie that I missed the name of but I’ll go back and find. Oops.
- Yeah, I should be live blogging but sorry I got distracted by the live video of the cast of THE OFFICE in the press room. Dude, Mickey Rooney is old as all get out and he’s rambling. Shut him up already. Anyway, the award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Miniseries or Made for TV movie went to Queen Latifah, who wasn’t there. Nice job Queenie.
- The ‘In Memoriam’ gets me every damn time. I’m always surprised to learn an actor has passed on.
- Ah, back to the awards. This time it’s Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role. The Boston girl in me wants Amy Ryan to take this one for Gone Baby Gone. Fingers crossed. The SAG goes to Ruby Dee for American Gangsters. (Awesome moment: Casey Affleck to Any Ryan saying something like “I suppose we should stand up” – ha ha)
- Wow, already up to Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role – is there any doubt that this one will go to Daniel Day Lewis? I doubt it. But damn what I’d give to see Ryan Gosling win, just because I adore him. But as expected, Daniel Day Lewis takes the win. I haven’t seen the movie, but I heard his performance was that of legend. Daniel spends most of his speech talking about the brilliant work of Heath Ledger, and dedicates the award to him.
- Forrest Whittaker is here to present the award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Leading Role to Julie Christie who doesn’t seem surprised one little bit as she grabs her speech from her wallet. There’s always next year Ellen Page.
- The last of the award of the night…the Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture goes to No Country for Old Men. Bravo!! Good job!! Josh Brolin, who will always be the guy from Goonies, is rambling and might be high…not that I’m into starting rumors.
Now, I’m done. I’m still around and would still love to talk about tonight’s events, but the live blogging is done. I’m off to find more pictures from the red carpet and will snag some videos if I can. Thanks for hanging with me. See you next year.

Did see Angelina and can understand with that dress why the rumor may be true. But the most surprising moment was when someone stepped on the front of her dress and she nearly flashed everyone.
And congrats to Mr. Gandolfini, Ms. Falco, and now the cast of The Sopranos.

I know there was talk about the strike on the red carpet, but yeah I’m kind of surprised that no one’s brought it up. But then again, we’ve had four winners, and three of them have been for a show that’s no longer on the air. So maybe the writers weren’t on the forefront of their thoughts?
I’m sure there will be talk of it at some point, hopefully other than the SAG president’s speech.
Maybe we will get a WGA strike mention when the TV comedy awards are announced.
And, there it was. The “hat rack” mentioned the WGA and SAG’s support of them.
There’s your WGA mention.
And yes, I’m not looking forward to the moment where they pay their respects to the late actors either because of the sad week with Heath Ledger.
No Steve or Ricky? Wow.
Was anyone else hoping that Steve would “win” a SAG award like he “won” an Emmy?
And I guess this means I’m going to have to start watching 30 Rock.
And YAY for The Office winning! 🙂
OK, guys. I’m on the road so can you please please please tell me what The Office peeps said in their acceptance? Pretty please..btw, were in the car and I just yelled in my hubby’s ear..teehee
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! Tina Fey and The Office won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CrazyGringa – Jenna mentioned that they all miss working together, but she dedicated the award to the crew which was all kinds of classy!!
CrazyGringa, Jenna basically said that the cast has been working hard for a long time and don’t take winning the awards for granted, and that they miss being at work with their crew.
And yay for Adama making it into that clip montage!
That was so great. I’m on cloud 9! I miss my Office friends. Jenna did a great job – you could tell she was a little nervous, but her acceptance speech was right on.
So who is JKras beside? One side Jenna Fischer, is it just Nancy Wall to his left?
Thanks GMMR and Sara A. I am so excited and can’t wait to get home so I can watch it.
Question: Are they going to be showing the press room online like they did last year? I loved watching that last year when Paul was answering some of the press questions after they had won.
your comments are makin me wish i was watching it. so awesome.
I’ve watched it a couple times, and it does look like Rashida is next to John… you can see that there is someone between him and Nancy Walls and it looks like the woman has hair like Rashida’s. And I looked it up, she wasn’t part of the ensemble that was nominated, I assume because its for Season Four.
GMMR – it was “As You Like It”
please tell that just wasnt the only memorial to heath. they showed his picture for like 2 seconds and didnt have a clip of him from a movie.
rip heath
GMMR or anyone, what was said in the press room? Was it “the men of The Office ” first like last year?
Ahhh, can you post the video of the press room with The Office cast?
ryan gosling is wearing a black ribbon to remember heath ledger. thats the sweetest thing ever
ryan gosling is wearing a black ribbon to remember heath
Thank you, Daniel Day Lewis, for giving Heath the respect and rememberance he so desereved.
It takes a Big Man to take the spot light off of himself and place it on another man.
This award show just proves how material and self obsorbed these people are.
God Bless Daniel Day Lewis.
Thanks for posting the semi play by play. I literally jumped out of my seat and screamed when I saw The Office cast won again. I was doubtful, but that was amazing. I’m happy with the 30 Rock wins, too. I
Can we please, please, please, please get the Press Room video of the Office Cast? Please?
OOO I second what Katie said. I remember last year, The office cast had THE best press room video and now it’s gone. Anyway, if anyone finds it, please post it!

Don’t get too excited…that vid of the cast of The Office in #27 was actually from last year.
Oops, sorry–I forgot to put it was from last year!
And I was all excited too! I’ve been looking everywhere for the Press Room Video… I’ve got nothing. Anyone found it?
Here’s the link but it’s not loading on my computer. Let me know if you have any luck:

OK, it loaded on my computer….at what point in the vid is the office on? at what time point?
Did anyone see Angela, Brian and Kate on tvguide. They were soo cute, as always. I loved how Brian ended with “Good luck 30 Rock.” Gah, I’m soo happy for them right now.
Thank you CrazyGringa! They start coming on at about 1:02:55.
I was so happy when The Office won! I said to my friend “it’s probably going to be 30 Rock, (which I also love) but I would love to see The Office win again.” Yay!
The In Memoriam gets me every time too. It’s sad even if I don’t recognize some of the people.
I loved Daniel Day Lewis’s acceptance speech. I have always admired him as an actor, and today I really admired him as a man. You could really tell that he respected Heath and wanted to carefully choose his words to pay him homage. Well done.
I just saw the Press Room stuff (Sorry, but if I knew ahead of time that the TNT press room was running west coast tape delay of it online, I would have said something). Anyway, that was some great cast moments there. I loved their cute little SAG stories. And I loved how Jenna kept asking Brian to answer the questions. 🙂
How did I know that everyone here was going to be commenting on The Office? There are other good shows on as well.
I love 30 Rock but I thought The Office deserved this particular award. Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin were the rightful recipients.
On the drama side, I was really disappointed in The Sopranos win as I thought this award was tailor made for a show like Mad Men. I think this was more about actors honoring the show rather than for their particular work this past season. I guess that’s the way it goes.
Was anyone else surprised that TR Knight, Katherine Heigl and Patrick Dempsey weren’t in attendance?
I didn’t realize that Jon Hamm from mad Men was with that girl from Notes from the Underbelly. When TV worlds collide.
I might be the only one here excited for the final Sopranos win.
Thanks for the live blogging and all the pictures. I just found your site tonight through google and I’ve already bookmarked it and added it to my favorites sites. I’ll be back tomorrow.
I was so excited that The Office won! How great that Jenna got to give the speech because she is such a real person. I noticed that she was sitting next to John at the table and standing next to him on the stage! Didn’t bring dates? HMMM
Best Actor in a Comedy could have deservedly gone to absolutely any of the 5 men nominated. What a talented group!!!
Great speech from Tina Fey!
We miss you Heath!
Ahhhh, the TNT video won’t work on my computer! I want to see the Press Room footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wanted Mad Men to win something, but The Office win was a nice surprise.
Sally –
Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt have been married for about 10 yrs.
