PUSHING DAISIES Dunzo…for Season One
January 31, 2008 by Kath Skerry
There have been many rumors over the past week about the possible end of the WGA strike. I’m choosing not to put much faith in rumors. When the strike is over, it’s over and not a minute beforehand. But if a fair deal were to be worked out soon, some shows could manage to pull together a few new episodes before the end of the season. Sadly, the best new show of this past year, PUSHING DAISIES, is not on that list.Creator Bryan Fuller recently told both E! and TVGuide.com that the nine episodes that have already aired in the brilliant first part of S1, will most likely be all we’ll get…until next season.
“Essentially, even if the strike is resolved in the next week or two, we wouldn’t be back until next season.”, says Fuller. “There was a preliminary conversation that involved a plan to hit the ground running and try to get episodes on the air as soon as possible, but it no longer seems like that’s going to happen. It seems most likely that we will have a very short first season and then come back in the fall for a proper season two.”Fuller goes on to explain some of the reasons behind this decision, “…one is that it will be hard to launch a big promotional campaign for four or five episodes; it’s just not cost-effective. Two is that if we did come back we would land right in the path of the American Idol juggernaut, and would likely be decimated. Three is if we came back in the fall with a full slate of episodes, then ABC could relaunch the show in a big way. The tentative plan now is to start the writers immediately [after the strike is resolved] so we can get some scripts stockpiled, and then hit production in June. But that’s all tentative. We’ve talked about so many options since the strike began and they fluctuate on a weekly basis. But right now a short first season seems the most likely.”
As sad as I am to hear this news, I’m jazzed to hear that ABC would invest in a relaunch of the show and offer an opportunity for more viewers to check out this brilliant series. I’m also hoping we’ll get word that ABC will release the first nine episode on DVD (perhaps with some nice bonus features). A girl can dream.

Good lord, the title scared me 🙁 I just saw the word “Dunzo” and a picture of Ned and my heart stopped… but I’m better now. I can deal with it coming back next season I guess (don’t really have a choice); it’s better than not coming back at all.
I like this plan and like it for all the shows. Better cut the season where it is… and save it all for next season
