FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: “Who Do You Think You Are”

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS recap

Turning on NBC at 9pm this past Friday, I wasn’t sure if I was watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS or Tuesday Night on The CW circa 2006. I mean what a treat to not only have Matt Czuchry (Logan from GILMORE GIRLS) as a guest star but we also had a cameo from the former head of the PCHers, Weevil (played by Francis Capra, formerly of VERONICA MARS). I mean Weevil!! Yeah, I was a little excited to say the least. As for the episode itself, it fell a bit short for me, don’t get my wrong, a lackluster hour of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is much better than most of the derivative droll that is forced on us by the networks, but things just felt a bit off this week night. Important storylines were forced, others were given too much screen time, while others way too little. It was all a bit uneven.

Landry & Saracen…
Landry and Matt, FRiday Night Lights

Talk about disappointing. I’ve been waiting all season for Matt and Landry to get back together. Next to Tami and Eric, Matt and Landry are my favorite couple on the show. I missed the friendship between the two former outcasts. We’ve seen so little of them together this season, that when I saw them standing by the car talking, I thought we were in for an epic episode. Finally we were going to see Saracen’s reaction to the news that Landry and Tyra were not only friends but they had sex, oh and that Landry killed a guy, confessed to the police and was eventually exonerated. But I would have been ok with them just talking about the Tyra sex. But nothing…nope! Instead Landry learned that Matt was banging Carlotta and she was leaving. Yay for that news, but yawn on the rest. I’m hoping the FNL writers have penned the scene (many scenes) where these two “best friends” catch up on each other’s lives. (Oh and I’m not mentioning anything more about Carlotta’s departure because I find her borderline creepy and I just want her gone)

The Cocktail Party Primer (Episode #17): Exhaustion, Confusion, and Hardly Any Sparkly Dresses

January 19, 2008 by

What with one thing and another, the last few weeks have left me more tired than the dregs from last night’s gin and tonic, but there’s so much going on this week, I just couldn’t stay away. So, without further ado, the DGA, Rachel Ray, and even though there’s no one to write them, award shows that won’t go away.

  • On Thursday, it was announced that the AMPTP and the Director’s Guild came to an agreement on a new contract. Reams and reams of text have already been created on the subject, and I still can’t figure out if this is Rather Good News or Potentially Horrendous News. It may signify that the producer’s are finally willing to make some concessions about Internet content. Or it could be that those wily AMPTMPETAMP rascals are just manipulating the situation to end up in a stronger bargaining position. Or possibly it means that we’re heading for a nasty El Nino season and that we can expect droughts in the West and deluges throughout New England this summer. Or maybe that was the Weather Channel. Honestly, I don’t know anymore.
  • In more unequivocally good news, it seems that Rachel “Shove this EVOO up your nose”/ “Now with 72% more smoker voice” / “I Act this way because I’m addicted to speed” Ray has lost her deal with Dunkin’ Donuts. Apparently, she prefers Starbucks coffee, and she doesn’t have the good sense to keep her distressingly Joker-esque trap shut about said preference, even when on the set of a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. I thought I’d gotten lucky when Bionic Woman went away, but this? This is like the Easter Bunny brought me a birthday present consisting of the whole world’s Tooth Fairy money. A world when there’s less of that woman cluttering up my TV is a shiny, happy place indeed.
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles premiered this week. For some reason, no one seemed suspect that a TV series based on a series of films based on robots and time travel and the shifting date and questionable inevitability of the Apocalypse might have the teeniest smidge of difficulty keeping its timeline straight. In practice, it’s about as clear as a mug of hot cocoa. As near as I can tell, the show is set in 1999, and then the lady Terminator from Firefly jumps everybody to 2007, where Sarah Connor is dead. The end of the world is in 2011. Either that or 2029. Regardless, once they’re in 2007, they jump back to 1215 to sign the Magna Carta. Then, when they’re on they’re way to 1969 to watch the moon landing, they stop back in at 2007. Only this time it’s 15 minutes earlier because they want to preheat the oven so that they’re frozen pizza will be finished by the time they get back from hearing Neil Armstrong say the “It’s one small step for man” bit. Possibly they also jump in to disrupt the WGA/AMPTP talks. I got a little lost, but that would explain a lot.
  • The Golden Globes, such as they were, aired last Sunday night with all the glitz and glamour of a church basement bingo game. Although I understand that people who write about fashion feel a bit like their favorite puppy just died, it suits me just fine that instead of a lengthy ceremony, they just had a little mini press conference type thing. I wasn’t going to watch regardless, but this way, I don’t have to pretend to feel sad I missed it. In other awards news, the Academy insists that the Oscars will go on as planned and that there won’t be any weenie Access Hollywood-style nonsense for them, no siree Bob. You can pry their masturbatory self-congratulation fest out of their cold, dead hands, and they don’t give two damns that there’s no writing dweebs around to dweeb all over it. Hollywood is about style and fabulousness and beautiful people and feeling important, and they don’t need none of your stinkin’ substance.

DGA and AMPTP Makes a Deal

January 17, 2008 by

The Directors Guild of American and the AMPTP have reached a deal in their new collective bargaining agreement. I wish I could tell you what this meant to the future negotiations between the WGA and the AMPTP, but I can’t. I do know that the DGA agreement could really help or really hurt the WGA. I’ll be checking UnitedHollywood.com for analysis (as they are working on it now), and let you know when I understand more.

Here’s an excerpt from the formal press release:

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced today that it has concluded a tentative agreement on the terms of a new 3-year collective bargaining agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

  • Highlights of the new agreement include:
  • Increases both wages and residual bases for each year of the contract.
  • Establishes DGA jurisdiction over programs produced for distribution on the Internet.
  • Establishes new residuals formula for paid Internet downloads (electronic sell-through) that essentially doubles the rate currently paid by employers.
  • Establishes residual rates for ad-supported streaming and use of clips on the Internet.
  • “Two words describe this agreement – groundbreaking and substantial,” said Gil Cates, chair of the DGA’s Negotiations Committee, in announcing the terms of the new agreement. “The gains in this contract for directors and their teams are extraordinary – and there are no rollbacks of any kind.”

Formal negotiations between the DGA’s 50-member Negotiations Committee and the AMPTP began Saturday, January 12, and were concluded today. Talks were led by Cates and DGA National Executive Director Jay D. Roth. They were preceded by months of informal discussions and nearly two years of preparation and research by Guild staff and consultants.

“This was a very difficult negotiation that required real give and take on both sides,” said DGA president Michael Apted. “Nonetheless, we managed to produce an agreement that enshrines the two fundamental principles we regard as absolutely crucial to any employment and compensation agreement in this digital age: First, jurisdiction is essential. Without secure jurisdiction over new-media production—both derivative and original—compensation formulas are meaningless. Second, the Internet is not free. We must receive fair compensation for the use and reuse of our work on the Internet, whether it was originally created for other media platforms or expressly for online distribution.”

AMERICAN IDOL Recap – “I Am Your Brother”

American Idol Auditions, Renaldo

“I am your brother, your best friend forever…”

What a strange journey it has been…and it’s only night number two of the AMERICAN IDOL auditions. The judges were down in good ‘ol Texas, and the crazies once again came out to play. There were some doozies last night, and I for one may never visit Texas out of fear that I may run into just one of the freak shows from last night. And scary as it is, some of them made it through to the Hollywood round.

There were some really strange and terrible “singers” that got the golden ticket for Hollywood last night. Simon was responsible for sending a few of them through. But here’s my theory…it was all a game. Simon figured he would be the first to chime in and give a “yes” to some pretty bad talent just to see how quickly Paula and Randy would cowtail to him and let the contestant through. It worked every time. Come to think of it, have we ever had a contestant that Simon wanted to send through to the next round only to be denied by Paula and Randy – I doubt it.

There was so much “talent” in Dallas that I don’t know where to start.

Looking forward to seeing you…

Let’s start off by showing some love to some of the better contestants that came through last night. First up was Jessica Brown, a 24 year old mother of two and recovering meth addict. It’s nice to hear one of these sob stories backed up by some actual talent. I really loved Jessica’s rendition of The Pretenders “I’ll Stand by You”, and I don’t know if it was her voice or her story, but I got the chills. I don’t know anyone that’s ever been addicted to crystal meth, well except for my good friend Fergie, but cheers to Jessica for bouncing back and making it to Hollywood (where sadly she will probably make it big and then find another debilitating drug habit..sorry, I just call ’em like I see ’em).

Drew, American IdolBe still my beating hears…what’s this I see? Talk about “save a horse, ride a cowboy” – did you all see Drew, the farmer boy? Hot damn! The country boy has never been on a plane and has that “aw, shucks” attitude that I completely love. Too bad it’s all a game. This boy knows exactly what he’s doing and how he’s selling himself. Come on, did you see him with the straw in his mouth leaning against the haystack? That had Abercrombie Summer ’06 catalog written all over it. But Drew can play whatever farm games he wants to play as long as he lets me watch. Oh, and he has a somewhat decent voice…like that matters. I’ll be keeping my eye on Jailbait!Drew.

Kady Malloy has a beautiful singing voice and can do a mad impression of Britney Spears – I’m talking spot on! She tried to sing a little “Before He Cheats” until Simon stopped her and asked to hear her – not Brit, not Carrie…just Kady. She gave it her all and it was incredible. Simon thought it was the best he had heard so far. Randy and I disagreed, but it’s all good. See you in Hollywood, Britney Kady.

WTF…are you for real?
I just spent three whole paragraphs saying nice things about people, so now you’ll have to indulge me a bit. The nut jobs need their time in the spotlight too, and I’m happy to grant them that.

GiveMeMyRemote.comYou know what sucks about being on the West Coast? Even if I get up super early to post to GMMR, it’s already late in the morning on the East Coast. I feel like I’m always just a bit behind. Normally I stay up kind of late and watch all my shows and then write about them before I hit my pillow, but with no TiVo in the hotels, I’m lucky if I can get one show in a night. And since I’m not quite done with the bitching and moaning, it seems that my router back home in Boston needs to be restarted which means I can’t even access my Slingbox. Screw the starving children in Africa, I’m the one who you should feel sorry for (and please don’t send any emails, I’m just kidding).

My lack of TV watching has resulted in few posts over the past 2 weeks…sorry. But I miss you guys. I miss the days of reading your comments, and finding out what you thought about the show. I’m ready for GMMR to be back to its normal self – damn you WGA strike (and by that I mean, support the writers).

Ok, ok, enough from me. On to tonight’s picks:

Ugly Betty | 8pm on ABC | New
“Odor in the Court”
Betty’s new perfume—a fragrance dreamed up by the deceased Fey Sommers—has bizarre effects on herself and Henry; Claire goes on trial for killing Fey; Wilhelmina continues her quest to be part of the Meade family.

ER | 10pm on NBC | New
“Atonement”
Teamwork takes on a new meaning for Neela as her sojourn in Ortho turns into a contact sport. Pratt hesitates when Bettina tries to move their relationship forward. Sam and Gates lock horns over work.

Without a Trace | 10pm on CBS | New
“Articles 32”
A veterans-hospital worker vanishes and the team has two leads, including the suspicion that an antiwar group may be involved in the disappearance. Det. Grant Mars: James Marsters. Laura Richards: Erin Chambers. Quentin Richards: John M. Jackson.

Special Pick:
The Office | 9pm on NBC
Andy Bernard “Dunder Mifflin Infinity”
Tonight we get a special half hour version of “Dunder Mifflin Infinity”. When this episode originally aired it was an hour long (and a half hour too long at that). As was the case with a few of the hour long Office episodes from earlier this season, “Dunder Mifflin Infinity” had a brilliant and laugh out loud funny first half and a pretty dreadful second half (do the words Michael, gift baskets, GPS and a lake ring any bells…yeah, it wasn’t pretty.) But tonight we get, in my opinion, one of the funniest half hours of TV this season. Check out the episode tonight if only to watch the scene where Kelly tells Ryan she’s pregnant…classic!

What will YOU be watching tonight…
Be my Friend? As always, GMMR’s daily “What to Watch” is powered by MeeVee’s interactive TV listings. I’ve just registered over at MeeVee but I don’t have a lot of friends to talk TV with over there. And with all of MeeVee’s TV content, there’s a LOT to talk about!! Will you register and add me as your friend? (username: GMMR). Thanks!!!

AMERICAN IDOL – “I’m Going for Actressing” (Philly Auditions)

American Idol Judges

Believe it or not, we are only two episodes in on the 7th season of AMERICAN IDOL, and it’s a loooong way until the finale. The talent search is on and the freak flags are waving high. The ‘bush baby’ backlash has left us with a kinder, gentler Simon Cowell, Randy still hasn’t found a thesaurus, and someone finally stabilized Paula’s meds – oh yes, AMERICAN IDOL is back.

Over the past two nights we’ve seen auditions – the good, the bad, and the WTF – from Philadelphia and Dallas. There have been a few standouts, but none that have been so fantastic that they are more memorable than the “colorful” folks whom have auditioned for Simon, Paula and Randy. And by colorful, I mean flat out bizarre.

Since I just got around to seeing last night’s episode, let’s start with a brief recap of some of the people who were making a name for themselves in the City of Brotherly Love.

In Philly there were a few standouts that I’d be hardpressed to forget this soon. There was Youka, an Egyptian guy who loves all things Mr. BeeGees and is looking for the perfect women whom he can love ‘from her hair to her nipple’ (guess he missed anatomy class). James Lewis, a Philadelphia tour guide who was encouraged to audition by his colleagues…colleagues that hate him. His rendition of “Go Down Moses” made Barry White sound like a soprano. Temptress, a 16 year old high school student who just happens to be the middle linebacker for her school’s football team is auditioning not only for herself but for her sick mother who has always loved to hear her sing. Things didn’t go her way, but Simon was absolutely smitten with her and personally walked her out of the audition room. It was nice to see the softer side of Simon, but the real nugget in meeting Temptress was hearing Ryan Seacrest talk about football. Seacrest, we get it, you’re straight…you know about football. Probably the most talked about contestant of last night was Paul Marturano who came prepared with an original song dedicated to Paula. “The Stalker Song” (full lyrics below) started off a bit funny but turned creepy soon there after. Paula tried to laugh it off, but Simon wasn’t having it and had the guy escorted out. I’m sure the guy just wanted to get on TV (mission accomplished) but that song even creeped me out.

American Idol, Princess Leia, guy who waxed his chest

The Princess Leia chick creeped everyone out and somehow was fighting to better the names of dorks and geeks everywhere. Newsflash Leia – dorks and geeks are cool these days. Have you not seen CHUCK or THE BIG BANG THEORY? Geek chic is all the rage so find another soapbox…and may the force be with you. Oh and don’t confuse the Princess Leia chick with the guy who dressed up like Princess Leia and whom left before his audition began to get his chest and back waxed at the suggestion of Paula…oh I kid you not.

AMERICAN IDOL is Back Tonight

AMERICAN IDOL

Maybe I just haven’t been watching too much Fox, or perhaps it’s because I watch everything on my TiVo and fast forward through commercials, but it seems to me there hasn’t been much hoopla about tonight’s season premiere of AMERICAN IDOL. In light of the strike, I would have thought that Fox would be overwhelming our senses with all things IDOL. Have they and I just missed it?

Anyway, the biggest show on TV returns tonight, but business isn’t exactly as usual. In light of a dip in viewers last season, and perhaps the joke some of the contestants have become as of late, IDOL decided to make a few changes this year to breathe some much needed energy into the show. Among those changes will be the contestants being allowed to play instruments, and a refocus on the contestants and less on the celebrity mentors that come in during the later rounds of competition.

I like AMERICAN IDOL and will absolutely be watching this season, that being said, I’m not usually a fan of the first batch of episodes when they exploit the really bad singers. I don’t mind it much when the contestants are there to exploit themselves, but when the contestants don’t know that they’re that bad, it just becomes sad.

LIVE Blogging AMERICAN IDOL….
Because I’m traveling and have to watch IDOL on my Slingbox, I’m not going to be able to live blog as I often do, but I’ll be sure to pipe in tomorrow with my thoughts on some of the highlights (but probably more the low lights).

But I will be watching, and I’ll be joining in on the chat with my friend Joel at TV with MeeVee who is going to be live blogging tonight and tomorrow’s episodes of AMERICAN IDOL, so set a reminder to head over there at 8pm EST tonight. I’m going to be popping in over there to add my two cents and I hope to see some familiar faces (or at least screennames) in the comments.

Simon CowellJoel got to chat with Simon Cowell himself and the two talked about this season of IDOL and the fate of past contestants among other juicy gossip.

“…I asked the famously caustic judge how he feels about the nastier-than-life persona that has sprung up around him and how it has affected him, aside from making him richer – do perfectly nice people back away when he enters a room? The thought drew a belly laugh.

“You mean, do they run when they see me?” he asked, still cackling. “They’re very nice to me, genuinely. I haven’t had any uncomfortable situations in real life. Most people who want to come up and talk to me are very nice, very civil. … I hope over the years that people, a) realize that I know what I’m talking about and, secondly, that it’s actually more cruel to lie to someone or give them false expectations rather than tell them the truth.” (continue reading: “Simon Cowell Talks American Idol“)

So what are you feeling about tonight’s premiere of AMERICAN IDOL? Are you excited or are you over it?

PRISON BREAK Recap: Boxed In

January 15, 2008 by
Filed under Prison Break, Prison Break Recap

Original Airdate: January 14, 2008
Title: “Boxed In”

Did you hear the one about the guy trying to break out of prison who ended up in a chicken coop?  I guess that’s not really a joke but it has all the elements of one, and believe it or not it’s the punchline to how the second half of this season of PRISON BREAK started off last night. Yes, PRISON BREAK is back…it’s been a long time.  It’s also been a long time since I’ve written a recap of this show, and I’m a little rusty, so please bear with me as I embark on this self indulgent rant.

When we last saw Michael Scofield, he was being led out of the prison after the General realized that he was most likely behind the two recent botched escape attempts at Sona. Whistler, T-Bag, Lechero all looked on as Michael was led to a new kind solitary confinement – Panama style – aka a chicken coop covered in saran wrap baking in the hot sun. Can we talk about this chicken coop please?  Was it supposed to be intimidating or something?  I don’t really get it?  Did the saran wrap make it hotter?  It wasn’t like it was enclosed or anything.  I mean Michael could just stand up and breath in that fresh, cool Panamania air when he needed.  Inside the prison walls of Sona, the guys spent the majority of their time outside anyway, so what’s the biggie?

Well whatever it is, it worked because Michael soon flew the coop and started squawking (see how I kept the chicken reference going…I’m good like that).  Did anyone else find it odd that after all Michael has been through (I mean this guy got his toe cut off with lawn equipment) that he would break down and talk after just a day in that thing?  For some reason, Michael seemed to put all his faith in this Panamanian General, because you know, all the Panamanian officials he’s encountered so far have been on the up and up. Geesh.  Michael tells the whole story about Linc’s framing, his placement in Sona, the kidnapping of L.J., the beheading of Sara, breaking Whistler out, his first sexual experience, the time he stole gum from the drug store – everything. And while the General didn’t buy his story at first, he at least took the time to look into it and found there were elements of the truth.

So Say We All: Terminator, Brothers & Sisters, The Amazing Race

Did you get to watch all the TV you wanted to last night? My Slingbox came in quite handy and I got to watch almost all the shows I wanted to last night. But I’m interested in what you had to say about last night’s TV.

TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES
TERMINATOR: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Cast
So this is one of the biggest premieres for Fox in quite some time. I’m so interested to know if you all watched and what you thought. Hopefully you’ve had a chance to read my take on the pilot, and you know that I really dug it. It felt like a full on feature film – I mean, those special effects aren’t something you see every week. The good news? Tonight’s second episode is actually better than the pilot. Tonight we will see just how Sarah, John, and Cameron adjust to their new world in the year 2007. We know they’re not safe, but will they at least have a few minutes to take a breather? So folks, did you watch? Let’s hear it…

THE AMAZING RACE
The Amazing Race 12
Let’s not bury the lead here…Nate and Jen are DUNZO! Can I get a Woot! Woot!! By far the most annoying couple this season made just enough mistakes to finally get booted. You know, I really didn’t hate Nate…I think he was a strong competitor whose major mistake was dating Jen and bringing her along on the race. Someone with that little tolerance for stress should never be allowed on this show. Jen’s stubborness and inability to listen to her partner cost them the chance at $1M. Oh well…sucka! So now we have Ron & Christina, Nicolas & Don, and TK & Rachel racing to the finish and the $1M prize. I guess at this point I’m pushing for TK & Rachel, but the way that Ron & Christina have been racing the past two episodes, they clearly deserve it…if only I didn’t despise Ron so much. Nicolas and Don deserve much credit for making it this far if only because Don is old and Nicolas has been running the race for both of them. Sadly I don’t really care who wins at this point. I happen to think that with the exception of the dreadful family edition, this is the most boring season ever of The Amazing Race. What do you think of Nate & Jen getting the boot? Who would you like to see cross the finish line first?

BROTHER & SISTERS

The Walker Family has issues…lots and lots of issues. Most of last night’s episode centered around a traditional Walker family dinner – a recipe for drama and hijinks in and of itself, but even more so when Nora invites Issac (Danny Glover) – her latest crush. Things come to blow when Julia finds out about Tommy’s affair with Lina, but see Julia had an affair to so she can’t really throw stones. And what’s with them saying they’re going to work it out? No they won’t – this is going to come back to haunt them and lead to a divorce…mark my words. I’m personally more interested in when Rebecca is going to learn that David (Ken Olin) is her father and how long after she finds out this news that she will start banging Justin. Now THAT is going to be some Walker family drama I can get into. Another satisfying, if not a tad bit lackluster episode for me. Only two more episodes left and then after that I guess I have to find a new family to booze with on Sunday nights. Was this just the Walker family doing what they do? Besides Dave Annable looking smokin’, what else did you think of last night’s ep?

So spill it…tell me what you thought of last night’s TV. I’ll be in meetings most of the day so I expect to see plenty of thoughts from you kids when I return 😉

The 2008 Golden Globe Winners Are…

Talk about anti-climactic – the 2008 Golden Globe Awards were presented tonight and it was a snoooooozefest.  In place of the glitz and glamour that the stars on the red carpet normally provide, we had the “personalities” from TV entertainment news shows like Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight announcing the winners. As sad and depressing as it was for us watching from home (or in my case on board Virgin America Airlines), can you imagine how it was for the winners…especially those who won for the first time?  Geesh.

There were definitely a few surprises tonight.  The good? MAD MEN and its star Jon Hamm taking home top honors in the Drama categories as well as Tina Fey taking home the award for Best Actress in a Comedy.  I had hoped EXTRAS would pull out the win for Best Comedy but I wasn’t convinced – so yay! And the not so good surprises?  How about David Duchovney taking home the award for Best Actor in a Comedy…say what?  Also not surprising was Glenn Close‘s Best Actress award (was there ever any doubt?)
