LOST Season 4 Premiere Questions & Theories…Let’s Discuss (UPDATED)

Questions, questions and more questions. That’s what we got from tonight’s episode of LOST. But half the fun of watching this show is trying to answer those questions and come up with theories on just what the hell is happening on (and now off) of that island.
Here are just a few things we learned and/or questions raised tonight’s episode, along with my bogus theories surrounding them. Please feel free to add your own thoughts.

Are you calling me a HO?
- While playing horse with Hurley, Jack gets the letters “H” and “O”. “H” is the 8th letter of the alphabet and “O” is the 15th – 815
- Behind Hurley as he’s freaking out over Abbadon there’s a small sculpture of the letters ‘HO’ on a shelf.
- Hurley mentions Charlie’s ghost showing up in the convenience store right next to the “Ho Ho’s”.
Who and what are The Oceanic 6?
GMMR’s take: The Oceanic 6 refers to the six people that got off the island. Assuming this is correct, we are talking about Kate, Jack and Hurley as well as three others. We know that Hurley initially went with Locke so who got off the island doesn’t necessarily depend on whether they initially sided with Locke or Jack tonight. We know that The Oceanic 6 have some level of fame as the police officer questioning Hurley called him a celebrity. But who are the other three? My guess as of tonight? Sun and Jin (they are desperate to get off the island as Sun in pregnant, and pregnant women die on the island), and for the last person, I’m going to go with Ben (for reasons that may become more clear after next week’s episode). I think perhaps Ben was in the coffin we saw in the S3 finale. It would explain why Kate didn’t want to attend the funeral. The chances of me being right on this one…probably pretty slim.
Team Locke: Hurley, Claire (and Aaron), Sawyer, Rousseau, Alex, Carl, Ben, Desmond (?) and a few other randoms (probably friends of Nikki and Paoulo’s)
Team Jack: Desmond,Kate, Juliet, Sun, Sayid, Jin, Rose, Bernard, and the rest of the losties who weren’t on Team Locke. (Why did Desmond go with Jack if he was so hell bent on warning others of what Charlie wrote on his hand?)
What happened that made Jack and Hurley so guilt ridden that they want to return to the island?
GMMR’s take: In the season 3 finale we learned that Jack’s carries around a lot of pain based on some decisions that were made in the past. He wants to go back to the island, presumably to right a wrong. Tonight we see that Hurley is dealing with these same demons. My theory (as of now) is that there was one brief window of opportunity to be rescued from the island. Jack, Kate, Hurley and the other three Oceanic 6 members had to make the call to get off the island or risk being stuck there while they searched for the other Oceanic 815 survivors. The Oceanic 6, led by their hero Jack Shepherd (as alluded to in the S3 finale) were rescued and told the public that they were the only survivors of the flight – no one else had lived. They made a pact to never tell anyone that they chose to leave the other survivors behind. That’s maybe why Ana Lucia’s partner asked Hurley if he met Ana Lucia before the plane took off. Had the true story come out, he might have asked Hurley if he met Ana Lucia on the island after the crash. If there were no secrets, then why would Hurley lie to Ana Lucia’s partner saying he didn’t know who she was?. But it seems that while some are questioning their story (such as a guy who came to visit Hurley in the hospital who later asked, “Are they still alive?”) personal guilt is ruining their lives. Hurley’s guilt is manifesting itself in the form of Charlie who said to Hurley, “They need you, Hugo. You know they need you”. “They” being the survivors they left behind? And maybe the strange and mystical force that was present on the island is haunting the everyday lives of the Oceanic 6, never letting them forget what they did. As Hurley tried to tell Jack, “I think it wants us to go back. It’s doing everything it can….” Perhaps “smokey” the smoke monster has made his way to Los Angeles.
Why did Hurley want to be in the mental hospital?
GMMR’s take: Hurley wanted to be in the mental institution, not because he was crazy, but he wanted protection. From what? From whom? Not sure, but I think he’s hiding from the same “it” that wants him to go back to the island.
What’s up with Charlie?
GMMR’s take: Is Charlie a ghost? He did tell Hurley that he was dead. But as he said, “I am dead, but I’m also here”. What does that mean? Is Charlie just a manifestation of Hurley’s guilt, or on some level in some parallel univers, is Charlie alive? Can’t say I have a theory on this one. It was too confusing to me. Any thoughts?
Who was in Jacob’s cabin and what did the voice say to Hurley?
GMMR’s take: Last season when Locke and Ben were confronted by Jacob in the cab, we saw a small glimpse of Jacob in the rocking chair. It was one of those, “blink and you’ll miss it” moments, but he was there (thanks for the heads up on that one Steve). So tonight when Hurley looked into the house he again saw someone in the rocking chair. Some people who looked closely swear that it’s Christian Shepherd, Jack’s father in the chair. But it was someone else who’s eye popped up into the window and scared Hurley off? Those who have watched carefully think they eye was Jacob’s. Others think is was Locke who was inside with Jacob. Locke was right outside when Hurley went running, but that could be a coincidence (although not many things are on this show). But what about the creepy whisper that Hurley heard as he approached the house? Any why didn’t he go running in the opposite direction the instant he heard the creepy voice?
….and many more. There were actually a few more questions that I had tonight, but they somewhat related to events that happen in next week’s episode so I’m going to leave them alone for fear that I will accidentally give something away.
Now I turn it over to you. What new questions did you have after tonight’s episode? Do you have any theories based on the what he we learned tonight? Is anyone else as stoked for LOST as I am right this second?

What happens between the flashforward of tonight and the flashforward of last season that makes Jack go insane?

Did anyone else crack up with Benry requested to be Lockes hostage instead 😉
I cracked up when Locke said “It wasn’t loaded.”
Parts where the show made me say “Whoa” (or other verbal expressions):
That Hurley was in the car (and thus both got off the island and was having major problems)
The phrase “Oceanic 6”
Hurley finding the creepy Jacob house, or whatever that was
I loved the pleasure Hurley got out of realizing that he would be poor when he got back. In fact, he really did some good acting here.
But it bugged me that they didn’t let Desmond explain to Jack exactly what happened, or use the phrase “Not Penny’s boat.”
I have so many questions, but I’m really enjoying the ride.
The foremost question is this: Just what exactly happens to these people before the rescue that messed that up so much?
You were so right! It was amazing! I am not afraid to admit that I teared up again each time the news of Charlie was conveyed.
I concur that Jorge Garcia did an amazing job tonight. Poor Hurley. I knew this was going to be rough when the last thing he said to Charlie was something along the lines of “I love you, man”.
I am interested to see the fallout from Jack’s willingness to pull the trigger on Locke. The Oceanic Six? Yeah, I want to know who the other three were too.
There are many things to speculate about and we obviously have more questions (which, are any of us really surprised about that) and I think it is going to be an amazing ride. I am a bit sad it is going to be cut short (BY HALF) but I’ll take what I can get.
Also…I still want to know who the heck was in that coffin!

Tear up? I just bawled. Especially in the scenes between Hurley and Claire and Hurley and ghost Charlie. Ghost Charlie was hot to, so that made me even sadder. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more of hot Ghost Charlie.
Great episode. Of course it answered a few questions, and brought up a ton more.
did everyone love how sweet and caring sawyer was when he asked Hurley how he was doing with Charlies death?
I thought it was really funny when Ben requested to go with Locke. And the Oceanic guy was really scary! Great casting!
Do you think Walt was with Jacob? That whole part confused me I am going to have to rewatch that part again.
Overall…loved it!
-I actually don’t think that Sun & Jin are in the Oceanic 6. I think they may be rescued later. An interview that I read with Matthew Fox said that Jack was definitely going to go back to the island…so I’m theorizing that he goes back, rescues people, & Sun & Jin will be amongst them.
-I loved that the writers are already casting certain characters in new lights & they’re doing it seamlessly! I loved Sawyer in this episode & how quick he was to be sweet to people. Bad Ass Hurley in the beginning was AWESOME. I never would have thought they would have put so much of the season premiere on his shoulders.
I got word that the strike is supposed to end in a couple of weeks & so I think that if they REEAALLYY work hard they could maybe get a full season of Lost cranked out..either way it’s going to be grueling having to wait a whole week before new episodes!

Once it finally started! Sheesh! (didn’t realize the first hour was more recapping) Anyhow well worth it, an excellent start to the new season. I also think that Jack and Hurley’s secret and guilt causing them to want to go back means they left people behind, people who wanted to come home, but of course I know it has to be waaaaaaaaaay more complicated than that. Can’t wait to see what went down after that parachuter landed…
And can I just say how happy I was to see Charlie? Awwww, dead or not, so glad he’s back… errrr or not back or whatever… Just glad to see him!! 🙂

I have to admit. I don’t like the idea that it’s Ben in the coffin. For one, it seems like the most obvious guess and, since the writers are clearly intentionally keeping us guessing on that front, I would hope they wouldn’t cheapen it all by making it the most obvious person. For another, I can’t imagine Jack thinking Kate would go if it were Ben. I still think it has to be someone who was apart of their group because it’s the only reason I can see him thinking she’d be there. Maybe if it’s one of the people involved in “rescuing” them.
Here’s my question… is the “he” who will be wondering where Kate is one of The Six? That would give us at least the gender of one more of the survivors. On the otherhand, it could be her father or conned husband, etc. I must admit, though, I’m still bugged by the idea that she’s walking around free. I can’t imagine the government pardoning her for her crimes just because she survived a plane crash.
And very little of this is about this week’s episode, eh?! Haha. Sorry. These were just things I was wondering about before the episode and it now feels like they are more important questions than I realized.
I am 99% sure it was Locke that looked through the window at Hurley. I froze the image on my HD-PVR and my wife agrees….what does it mean though? Who the hell knows!! :))
I think the whole thing is based on time-lines. They are lost in “Time”. The submarine was a prop, that why Julliette was knocked out for her trip. Remember Naomi saying …”Yeh you were that rock star and they had tribute concerts and greatest hits release..” she said it like it happened a long time ago….And Sayid saying he’d never seen a phone this sophisticated. Naomi is from the future (relative to out gang).
hmmm that’s interesting about time Terry B … I noticed in one of the “flash forwards” , when Jack was drunk at work saying something like “go upstairs and if my father isn’t drunker than me you can fire me” and I was sort of confused about that since his father died… Were they maybe brought back in time…to before the crash? does that make any sense? it could explain Charlie being dead but still here… yet everyone seems to know about the Oceanic 6… GAAAAHHH I dunno!! It’s a mystery…
I was curious why this episode so many people were calling Hurley, Hugo. I know that is his real name but for 3 seasons it has only been used by the others and Michael (getting it from the Others). But future Jack did call him Hurley while playing basketball. Did that strike anyone else as odd?
So I think most of your are off on the whole Oceanic 6 thing. They are making a play on the Oceanic 815 flight itself, and therefore the 6 people that get back to the “real world” have to have been on that original Oceanic flight that crashed, so Juliet and Ben couldn’t have gone back because they weren’t part of the original flight. My money is on, Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sawyer (the 4 on the list requested by the others…) and Jin and Sun for their baby.
I definitely think that Jacob is Dr. Shepard because not only was John Terry listed in the credits BUT … it would finally explain why his coffin was found empty. That’s always a scene from season 1 that I forget happens, and everytime I rewatch I think, oh YEAH! when are they going to address that? So although they haven’t explained how/why he’s Jacob/who he is, etc, I think they’re finally going to reveal that answer soon.

OO. .. before I pressed submit I went to Lostpedia and found that the missing pieces episodes are about Christian Shepard … so maybe he is Jacob? Maybe he’s not, I haven’t watched those episodes, but I will soon.

I think its safe to bet that the oceanic 6 are firstly Kate, Jack, and Hurley because we’ve seen that in flashforwards, but i also think its likely that the other three are Sun, Jin, and Sayid. I haven’t heard many people guessing sayid yet, but Sun, Jin, and Sayid are like the only other people who didnt even seem to give staying with jack a second time. they clearly are the other three that are loyal to jack and want to get off the island. Now the question is how does Hurley come into play?
Also i agree that its Ben in the coffin, because there were only 6 oceanic people it doesnt neccesarily mean that only 6 people left the island. If Ben, Juliet, or Desmond left, they wouldnt be called the oceanic 6 since they werent on the plane.
I love the time travel theory. Something that’s always bugged me is the question of how Richard (is that his name?) is shown currently with Ben and co., and he was one of the people who recruited Juliet, but he was also shown in scenes with Ben’s mother (1960’s?). This could be answered by the time travel theory.
Perhaps the Oceanic 6 chose to be returned to one point in time. This would also explain why Charlie is dead but “also here”.
Like parallel universes. Lives being lived in the same place but at different times.
Huh!?? Sorry, it’s hard to put into words exactly what I’m thinking!
I think Sawyer is the one in the coffin. That is why Jack seemed surprised that Kate didn’t go to the funeral. Jack only went to the funeral because he thought Kate would show up and he wanted to see her. That’s why when the funeral director asked if he was family or friend Jack said “neither”. Something must have happened on the island that made Kate hate Sawyer and not want anything more to do with Jack. She clearly wants Jack out of her life. But who was the “he” she refered to when she said — He’ll wonder where I am (or something to that effect.)?
I’m so glad Lost is going to end well! It seems like so many shows start off well but then fizzle (Alias!). I thought Lost was going the same way but my faith has been restored!
I think it’s entirely possible that Sun could be rescued but not Jin.
Also, I think the hatred towards the person in the coffin may possibly be someone other than the likely suspects (Locke and Ben), who ends up doing something pretty awful when everything went down (we can safely assume SOMETHING pretty awful happened).
i say locke is one of the oceanic 6 and i say he is in the coffin. becuase he has no one to viste him and no one was at the funeral except jack. and who do kate and jack hate more then anyone “locke” and if jack gets to pick who gets off the island i say he picks locke to piss him off because he knows that locke dosent wanna go

A: Penny. Even though this is Not Penny’s Boat, it is a heckuva lot closer to getting to her than running back through the jungle with Locke to the barracks.
I AM SO CONFUSED. So at the end of series 3 jack has a beard but in the 1st episode of series 4 he says to hurley I think I am going to grow a beard. So my theory is that the end of series 3 is actually more forward in time than series 4….
If that makes sense? Which would explain why jack is actually so chilled out about the whole thing compared to how he was in the end of series 3 and compared to hurley now.
I do not know what the hell locke is up to I mean as a veiwer I dont know who to trust and who not to trust and I think thats where my confusion lies

Interesting thoughts on the time travel – I have been having a hard time following that as well, especially when Jack gave the new head surgeon (from “Scrubs”!!) the line about his father being more drunk than he.
I think it’s Juliette in the coffin – Location of the funeral home makes no sense to me, but I’m voting for her since Jack was so affected by reading the obituary and Kate had no interest in attending. Just a thought.
No one has mentioned how when Hurley was running from Jacob’s cabin, it mysteriously appeared in front of him. Is the cabin real or is it illusion?
I think that when they were on the plane they somehow went back in time. After seeing the 2nd episode of season 4 when charlotte goes and sees the fossil of the polar bear ,that could have been from the island because of the dharma collar. So the island could have been the very beginning of life itself. In the first season when they go to the caves and see 2 bodies there it could be adam and eve.

In some religions they beleive that Adam and Eve were the first two people to be created. So the island is the beginning of everything with Adam and Eve.
Interesting, but what if the collar is from another Dharma site. The Dharma group seemed pretty big that it woudn’t be all that impossible to have several locations spread out across the globe studying….stuff. Charlotte and her friends could have been sent to the island by a different group like Dharma to study and gather information left behind by Dharma.
As well as get Ben for some reason. I’m not sure what the pilot of the chopper specialty is, but Miles deals with ghosts, so his mission could deal with Jacob, Charlotte does with archeology, so she’s supposed to do that sort of work, and the other guy is a physicist, so he’s supposed to deal with the island’s physical phenomena.
The 31min difference on the clocks shows that time is a factor in all this. I also think that the difference in time depends on how long you are on the island. The longer you are on the island, the further you get from your own time-line.
Naomi and her crew have been on the island for less than a day so the difference so far is small, 30 minutes.
Our gang has been on the island for 3months so the relative difference will be much larger.
So I think that means the Naomi is from our future because time on the island passes slower relative to outside the island.
Just a thought….
Update to my time idea: Why did the ship know nothing about the chopper that had left the day before with Desmond and Sayid? I think it’s because of the ever increasing time difference between the boat and the island… they are still in the air on their way.
Remember the warning to the pilot to make sure he stays on the correct path? I think that when you leave the island…the route you take controls “when” not “where” you end up. Who knows where/when Michael and Walt ended up on that boat….
The man in the cabin(Jacob) is Jacks dad. How do i know? His name is in the credits!!
Sun gets off the island. If u knoticed at the end of series 3 when it shows jack saying all he does is fly hopng it crashes and it has a shot of him on a plane. Sun is in the background in another seat!
Michael is Bens spy on the boat. Michael and walt where taken off the isaland…. to the boat. They havent been mentioned in ages but all of a sudden ben is mentioning a spy and lock is mentioning Walt telling him to do stuff.
Yes the show is based on time travel!!

I think the oceanic six is Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Jin, And Sun and Jins baby. Just a thought.
