BONES Recap: “The Verdict in the Story”
May 6, 2008 by Kath Skerry
GMMR recapper, Seeleybaby, is back with her take on last night’s episode of BONES. I’m putting this show on my summer watch list. I’m making no promises, but being on the list is half the battle.Title: The Verdict in the Story
Original Airdate: 5/5/08
GMMR Recapper: Seeleybaby
This episode is exactly why I love this show. I’m not usually into all the technical stuff, but the direction in this episode was absolutely gorgeous. Stunning use of lighting and flashback, and the sweeping shot at the end was very well done.
Meanwhile, back at the plot, for Brennan, fighting on her father’s behalf against the Jeffersonian team makes for a tough day. I am intrigued by the two sides. On just about any other day, I think Brennan would claim Booth, Angela etc are her ‘family’…there’s more than one kind, after all….yet she is fighting for her natural family, people who have abandoned her.
The Case:
Booth brings Brennan to see a skeleton she will not believe. She laughs at Booth’s idea on how it could look like that. Oh, yeah, the old carpet trick…what a knee slapper…stick to the drama, Brennan. Caroline Julian comes to tell them Brennan is off FBI cases. There is a date set for her dad’s trial. Booth was the arresting officer. (Don’t act surprised with me, GMMR readers. If you still haven’t seen seasons one and two…as SNL’s ‘James Lipton’ would say…go to a place where videos are sold and rented and buy or rent it…it will change your life.) The FBI says Brennan can’t work with Booth until it’s over.
Booth and the J-Team (you like that?) are called in as witnesses for the prosecution against Brennan’s dad, Max Keenan. Brennan is testifying for the defense. He’s on trial for the murder of FBI Deputy Director Kirby, a crooked man who was after Russ and Brennan. Max is potentially up for the death penalty. We have to wait till the end to find out if there will be death in this episode.
The Squints:
Oh ho! Added bonus for Booth…No partnership? No couple’s therapy! Sorry, Sweets! (Or Dr. Geeks as Booth calls him…Freaks and Geeks shoutout?!)
Angela, Angela, Angela…You lived wide today. Maybe not the best time to show your devotion to Brennan, but I get it.
The team does a good job doing their jobs, if that makes sense.
The judge was kind of squinty. I laughed when he split B&B up for talking.
B&B:
Sweets tells Brennan that the more objective and cold (ouch) she appears, the more he thinks she’s hurting, and Booth agrees. Sweets encourages her to actually ‘feel’ a situation, not just rationalize it. He also is writing a book and wants to continue the sessions as research. B/B are fun when they tease him.
This episode highlights the friendship between the partners, something I think people can be quick to overlook trying to get them to jump into bed. They show friendship by getting each other coffee. Booth has compassion for her at her apartment. He helps her compartmentalize her emotions. She rewards him by calling him nice. And then they jump into bed. J/K
All joking aside, when Booth was on the stand at the end, and he testified to Brennan’s character, I cried. Their relationship/friendship/partnership is very special.
Favorite Line of the night:
Angela to Brennan: Friends don’t send friends’ fathers to the electric chair.
Seeleybaby is glad the writer’s strike is over but now has to clear out her DVR for new episodes of Bones, The Office, and Scrubs. She also is still sad Arrested Development isn’t on (COME ON!) and is looking forward to more Flight of the Conchords.

YAY…yes, do watch it. I found it on DVD during the writer’s strike, and loved the narrative threads. You’ll be adding David Boreanaz to your list of TV boyfriends by the end of the summer, I’m almost willing to bet on it. 🙂

Please watch them in order though; Season one can be a bit rough, but the pay offs are good in seasons two and three if you get to know the characters better, IMO.

Love love love that Bones is being covered at GMMR! I never really got the Dave B love till I started watching this show, now I understand!!! The relationship between Booth and Bones is always great, and I particularly loved the last five minutes of last nights episode. between Booth’s testimony and the long shared state at the end…..love their interaction. Nobody does “should they or shouldn’t they” better than this show.
I really enjoyed last nights episode. I was really conflicted about the case. You want Bones’ father to be alright and free, but he is guilty. And the Squints need to do their job.
I love how they solved it though – no lying, just…. showing the truth.
I am so glad you are starting to watch it (or at least, have it on your list) – it is a fantastically good show. I love the procedurals, but this one is so much more comedy than anything else!
A little late but…loved it! This was what I was waiting for after the strike. An episode that really showed B&B as friends. Sure, I want them to get down as much as the next person but I love the friendship and their wonderful banter! And I got a little Sweets! (I thought he was great on the stand!)
I will honestly say, I never watched this show until this past summer. I was lookign around for a show to watch and poof! There was S1 of Bones. As luck would have it, I finished S1 about a week before S2 came out on DVD. DVD is the best thing that ever happened to TV.
I am one of a select few who didn’t care for this episode (obviously in the minority). There are many reasons, but I think I was extremely annoyed with the ending, and with Max being set free. As much as fans may have wanted the “happy Brennan family reunited”, and the B/B squeeworthy ending – I hated it. Max did commit that murder, even though it was in defense of his family, and he should have been punished for it. Total cop-out on the part of the writers, in my opinion.
Kimber,
Good point. I’m interested in hearing why else you didn’t like the episode. I can see where the verdict requires some hand waving, but were you unhappy with the Angela stuff? or maybe that there wasn’t really a ‘bones’ case?
I admit I was just hoping for not the death penalty…I agree there should have been some repercussions..but then I guess he’d have to have been found guilty. Hmmm…it’s tricky, I guess.
Patti, as for Sweets, some people think that Booth and Brennan aren’t partners anymore, which I’m not sure about. What do you all think?
I love Angela. I could only hope my BF would stick for me like that. I agree that the ending was a cop-out except that they needed to move B&B forward and I think the whole Booth on the stand thing might have done it. Now Ryan O’Neil can move on on not be on the show any more.
I think B&B are more than partners now. Or do you mean just because of this last episode? Now I am confused.
Patti, I meant literal partners. It seems Sweets was saying the sessions were over, but that he continued to want to see them for research. I guess because the reason they were in the therapy to begin with was because Booth had arrested Max, now that that is done, they don’t need the sessions, but they need some reason to keep JFD around.
I thought they were just canceling the partnership during the trial, that made sense…so i was surprised when Sweets thought he had to come up with another reason to meet with them.
They were both accepting of the idea, I think…which was interesting…
it just seems that the power is now with B&B, where before, Sweets and the FBI controlled the partnership, etc
I seem to remember that now. I thought they were going to keep Sweets around as a consultant.
I hope it’s not Sweets who bites in in the finale!
