GOSSIP GIRL is the Single Greatest TV Show Ever

May 20, 2008 by

How’s that for a attention grabbing title.  Ok, maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement.  Perhaps GOSSIP GIRL isn’t the single greatest TV show ever, but I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t what I was feeling while watching last night’s season finale.

I’m not sure what happened to the GOSSIP GIRL writers during the WGA strike but if they could bottle it and take it to the Hamptons this summer and hide it away for safe keeping until the show returns in the Fall I will be forever grateful.  Don’t get me wrong, I have truly enjoyed every dirty moment of GOSSIP GIRL since it premiered last Fall, but the batch of episodes we’ve had post-strike have been off the charts good.  The writing has been over the top and so tight.  The character arcs are equally grandiose and delicious.  And even the actors have stepped up their game to match the material they have been given.  Just as the show is blasting on all cylinders, we have a summer break.  Now that’s just cruel.

Let’s talk just a little bit of what happened last night.  The quick and the dirty if you will….

  • Lily and Rufus (my favorite almost-couple on the show) wake up in each other’s arms the morning of Lily’s wedding.  As expected, Rufus shows up and asks her not to marry Bart.  It’s clear these two love each other so I was a bit confused when after a closed door conversation Rufus simply wished Lily well and sent her down the aisle to marry Bart.  Huh?  What happened?  I feel like we were a bit cheated.  What was said in that room?  Why did she marry him?!
  • Dan didn’t sleep with Georgina.  Whew (I can’t only imagine that nasty she’s carrying). But they might as well have.  Serena was obviously upset at what transpired but took it all in stride.  I mean she did just tell her boyfriend that she drunkenly did the deed with two complete strangers.  I think it was fine for him to hook up with Georgina in spite of what happened.  I mean, they were on a break!  And it looks like that break is sticking.  A heartbroken Serena was dealing with the love of her (teenaged) life being with another girl, and Dan was dealing with the fact that his girlfriend’s drama might just be a bit too much for him to handle.  In the end they broke up, but the door was definitely left open for a reunion in the future.  That is if Nate and Vanessa don’t get in their way…and they most certainly will.
  • After last night I officially hero worship Blair Waldrof. Her Central Park smackdown on Georgina was a thing of legend.  She’s such a sassy little bitch and I bow down to her.  I’m on the hunt to find the clip of that scene, because I think everyone should just watch and learn.  The girl is that good.  And by good I mean evil…but in the best possible way. And while we are at it, we might as well say so long to Georgina.  It was fun while it was lasted you crazy, psychotic bitch.  Have fun at boot camp.
  • Chuck Bass – how I love thee, let me count the ways.  Tonight we saw a softer, gentler side of Chuck Bass.  And I liked it.  I’m glad he stepped up and put things aside with Nate to be there for him as a friend when he was needed.  Bros before Hos.  And what’s with all the googly eyes for Blair.  Could this be true love?  Could Chuck Bass really be settling down with one woman?  Nah….

One Week Later….
Looks like Dan was finally able to let go of Serena on the dance floor and the two haven’t talked since. Works out well for Vanessa who seems ready to finally make her move on her best friend.  And it doesn’t suck for Nate who may perhaps relive the night of the Shepherd wedding with Serena as they spend the summer in the Hamptons.  Despite her love afair with Chuck, it seems that Blair has found a new boy to do dirty things with in the jump seat. And then there’s Chuck.  I was happy for him as he was preparing to fly off into the sunset with Blair.  The boy could use a little happiness.  But I was a little distraught when I saw that little blonde hussy walk in.  He was going to leave Blair behind for her? Don’t do it! Ah he did it. I was so disappointed…for a nano second.  How can one be disappointed when they hear those three little words that I have come to love: “I’m Chuck Bass“.  Annnnnnd he’s back!  Yes!

I am so bummed that we won’t be getting a summer edition of GOSSIP GIRL.  And it’s too bad because I think the show would blow up if it were to air original episodes during the summer.  Or maybe I’m just being completely selfish because I don’t want the show to lose one ounce of momentum during the summer hiatus.

I do know one thing…it’s going to be a while before I let tonight’s season finale be deleted from the good ‘ol TiVo.  This one is definitely worth a re-watch…or ten.

As the song goes….see you in September, bitches!

XOXO

The Blair/Georgina park in the scene was AMAZING!! It happened so early in the episode i was worried it would all go downhill from there, but i was not disappointed.

What i liked about the GG finale was that it didn’t have some ridiculous cliffhanger (only the slight cliffhanger of what really went on between rufus and lily), it actually tied everything up pretty nicely and just set us up for next season with the ‘one week later’ thing.

No mention of Jenny’s internship with Blair’s mom? That could be interesting. Her not being in the last episode at all and then barely being in this one made me forget how much I had hated her a few weeks ago.

This episode was just too much fun! Chuck Bass is, to use a tagline from another great Monday show, LEGENDARY! When he gets onscreeen with Blair, it’s just amazing. I am convinced that they’re the true love story of the show. LoL.

Favorite moment of the night was when Blair was telling Chuck about Dan’s first time taking someone else down and she says: “It’s always hard the first time.” And Chuck goes, “Not for you.” Then she grabs him, kicks him in the shin and reminds him that now that the Georgina situation is taken care of, their time together is over.

I wrote an email to my sister that said that Blair was the shit in this episode. She became one of my favorite characters in less than a single episode, it was great! I’m so bummed for her that Chuck reverted back to his “old” ways… stupid Bart had to go and scare the kid.

I’m interested to see what actually transpired between Nate and Vanessa. I don’t remember that actually having a clear reason as to why they broke up.

Overall, I thought the episode was great, but compared to other season finales, this one was rather light on the cliffhangers. Kind of disappointed in that. 🙁

Are you kidding me? The best tv show ever? This wasn’t even the best episode ever. This wasn’t even the best episode of ANY tv show aired on a Monday night!

Personally, I think most of my discontent was based on the uber-hype placed on the finale. With high expectations, where can you go but down?

Most of my thoughts will probably go on my own site later, but let’s look at the plot against Georgina alone. Wow. That was…lame. Chuck and Blair stayed up all night to think of that plan? Calling her PARENTS?! It took them all night to realize that all they needed to do is tattle. Wow. I’m impressed. Plus, what was with her reaction. She’s slipped from their grasp before–even stealing a credit card, they said–and had no problems. What would make the difference now? Uh, oh, little miss black nails is getting in twubble. Seriously, the only thing that made that scene decent was the voiceover (“The only people the spawn of Satan is scared of is her parents”–at least that gave us a CLUE as to why she’d be scared around them when no one else in this show is) and Blair’s quip about being the only crazy b*tch in this town.

Sorry, but it was ok for a season finale, but definitely not what I’d consider close to being one of the greatest ever.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show…and I think it is my FAVOURITE Monday show…

I can’t wait for it to be back on September 1st!

And I also think that CW should have aired a few summer episodes…but oh well…I’ll be back!

Although Chuck/Blair did not end on a great note (they are my FAVOURITE TV couple EVER)!! I can’t wait till CB become the main couple in season 2!
