BONES Recap: “The Wannabe in the Weeds”

Title: The Wannabe in the Weeds
GMMR Recapper: Seeleybaby

Never thought I’d say this, but I actually look forward to Mondays. Thanks Bones, I owe you one. I expected this week’s episode to be the Fredo Corleone to last week’s Michael, but it was at least a Sonny.

There’s a reason Ace Young was kicked off American Idol. He was a low talent performer looking to make good off his looks and performing abilities, not the music, man. And if that’s not true, then, he’s got a career in acting, because he played the part perfectly tonight.

The Case:
Ace Young plays a wannabe singing star (hmmm) who is killed after singing at a karaoke bar. Potential suspects include an artist neighbor, a crazed fan (Fat Pam, more from her later) from the gym, competition karaoke singers, a fake scout and manager, a jealous boyfriend, or not boyfriend. I’ll give you a hint, it doesn’t really matter.

ABC Announces 2008-09 Primetime Schedule

May 13, 2008 by

Earlier this morning ABC President Steve McPherson announced the primetime schedule for ABC’s 2008-09 TV season. There weren’t a lot of big shockers here. In addition to the new ABC shows, it was nice to see that ELI STONE was picked up for a second season. BOSTON LEGAL will finish up its run with it’s final season in the Fall. And what shouldn’t be a big shock to anyone, SCRUBS will its final season on ABC this year. UGLY BETTY is moving production from L.A. to New York next year.  As previously announced, MEN IN TRESS and OCTOBER ROAD have been canceled.

ABC is making their presentation to advertisers this afternoon, and it will be the first chance to get a look at the new shows.  I’ll be watching and will let you know if anything interesting happens.

Get a taste for ABC’s new shows, and then continue on to get a peek at ABC’s new primetime schedule.

DRAMA
LIFE ON MARS:
“Life on Mars” is based on the BBC series created by Matthew Graham, Tony Jordan and Ashley Pharoah. The series revolves around Sam Tyler, a modern-day police detective who, after a car crash, mysteriously finds himself transported back to 1973 and still working as a detective.

“Life on Mars” stars Jason O’ Mara as Sam Tyler, Rachelle LeFevre as Annie Cartwright, Colm Meaney as Gene Hunt, Stephanie Jacobsen as Maya, Lenny Clarke as George Randall, Patrick Wenk-Wolff as Colin Raimes and Richard Benjamin as Milton Kornboll. (CASTING is subject to change)

COMEDY
THE GOODE FAMILY:
A new animated series from Mike Judge, creator of “King of the Hill.” “The Goode Family” is obsessed with doing the “right” thing, whether it’s environmentally, politically or socially. Unfortunately their efforts often have unintended comic consequences.

“The Goode Family” is voiced by Mike Judge as Gerald, Nancy Carell as Helen, Dave Herman as Ubuntu and Abby Elliot as Bliss.

REALITY TV
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS:
“Opportunity Knocks” is a new show that breaks the mold of typical game and reality shows. We will be showing up on America’s doorstep and testing how well they know their family. Our mobile team will arrive at “Anywhere, America” in a semi-truck that is full of flat screen TVs, new furniture and big cash prizes that the family can win right there. We will take the action of a game show directly into our contestants’ homes, setting up shop in a family’s front lawn. The instant our host, JD Roth, knocks on the front door, the game will begin. Hollywood will invade a suburban neighborhood, and each week one lucky family will play the game of a lifetime in front of all their friends and neighbors.

The host poses trivia questions to family members based directly on their lives, each other and articles found in and around their home. If they’re able to prove they know their family inside and out, they’ll win the prizes of their dreams.

Executive producers for “Opportunity Knocks” are Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg, Karey Burke, J.D. Roth and Todd A. Nelson.

NBC Upfronts…Best.Night.Ever!!

I’ll be sure to share all the details of my fabu night at the NBC Upfront party with you tomorrow.  Just know this.  Earlier tonight I was touching Zach Levi and John Krasinski.  And that wasn’t even the best moment of the night!  Nope, that would be when Tina Fey told me that she reads (and loves) GMMR.  Seriously?  You’ve got to be kidding me.  And Jack McBrayer reads this little ‘ol site too. Yup.  A fantastic night.  Honestly, sometimes life doesn’t suck.  More tomorrow.

Britney is Back on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (Watch)

Britney Spears is back for her second (and maybe not last) appearance as Abby on tonight’s episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. If you just need your Britney fix, then check out these clips from tonight’s episodes.

I personally wasn’t impressed with her first appearance and I can’t say that these scenes are giving me any confidence in her being any better this time around. She’s just not a natural actress. But I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, if only for the viewers she’s bringing to the show.

Speaking of, the CBS Upfronts are this week. Cross everything you’ve got and hope that HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER gets picked up for next season.

Original Airdate: 5/9/08
GMMR Recapper: Jo

39,675. Because that dayplayer on Demetrius got blown up last week. Two major story lines but once again several MIA actors. Adama only pops up at the very end.

Roslin, wearing a convincing bald cap comments on Tory’s new found strength the face of political whirlwinds. Huh, I wonder who will airlock who first…Fast forward to Roslin’s chemo treatment. She tries to comfort a dying woman, but Roslin tries to turn Baltar off the radio which incites the woman. Later she apologizes and tells Roslin about how she’s almost crossed the river. Metaphorically. Or Metaphysically. That’s left to interpretation I suppose. Across her river is her dead family, happy and waiting. This gives Roslin a little more hope, since she also lost her mom to cancer. As the woman dies, Roslin gets a glimpse of her own riverbank which includes her mother who I promise from a distance could pass for Barbara Bush. I shouldn’t giggle during these serious type moments but I’ve seen the former first lady from ten feet away and that’s all I could think about.

BROTHERS & SISTERS Sneak Peek at “Prior Commitments”

Kevin and Scott get married on Brothers & Sisters

(The following contains spoilers (although nothing too major) about tonight’s episode of BROTHERS & SISTERS.  Read at your own risk.)

I know it’s kind of late in the evening on Sunday and I should have made time earlier to remind you all to watch tonight’s episode of BROTHERS & SISTERS (10pm on ABC), but better late than ever.  And if you are, ever were or ever wanted to be a fan of BROTHERS & SISTERS tonight is the episode to tune into.

If there were ever such a thing as a classic B&S, tonight’s episode, “Prior Commitments” is it.  Everything that has defined the show – the laughter, the tears, the booze, the dysfunctional family drama – tonight’s got it all.

I want to be careful not to reveal too much because you all are hopefully going to watch it soon, but I will say that tonight Kevin and Scotty commit their lives to one another and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house…mine or the Walker’s. I wasn’t always a fan of Scotty but he’s fast becoming one of my favorite characters, and I’m glad he brought Kevin to where he is now. I love how honest and real this show deals with their relationship, and once again tonight we are reminded that while not everyone is accepting, sometimes it’s more important to concentrate on the love from those who are. And anyway, who doesn’t love a good TV wedding?

Jennie Garth Joins the 90210 Spinoff

May 10, 2008 by

Jennie Garth Joins the 90210 SpinoffThe CW announced today that Jennie Garth will be appearing on the new BEVERLY HILLS 90210 spinoff when it debuts this Fall on The CW. Jennie will be heading back to West Beverly High, but this time around she’ll be the school’s guidance counselor. Garth appeared on the original 90210 series as Kelly Taylor.

I’m loving the idea of Kelly Taylor – Guidance Counselor. Who better to counsel today’s youth than someone who has first hand experience of the dangers that come with maturation? How many guidance counselors have first hand experience with drug addiction, date rape, being caught in a fire, diet pills, joining a cult? I think Ms. Taylor will have a lot to offer.

I’ve been on again and off again with this show. I was excited about it at first when Rob Thomas was named showrunner. With his departure I had lost a bit of interest. But now with Garth on board and other ex-90210ers like Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering looking to come on board, this could end up being rather spectacular (feel free to insert your own take on the word ‘spectacular’).

Upfront Talk: “Aliens” and “Back to You” Get the Ax; “Reaper” Saved

May 10, 2008 by

I’m going to be heading to NYC on Monday for the network Upfronts. It’s the week where traditionally the networks reveal their Fall lineups to potential advertisers. But if we learned anything from this past year it’s that when it comes to TV, nothing is “tradition” anymore.

NBC already announced their preliminary lineup a few weeks back. The rest of the networks are unveiling their schedule this week with a caveat or two. The pilot season had been drastically affected by the WGA strike so expect to hear changes up until the Fall schedule is set in stone.

But word is already starting to leak out about some of the network shows on the bubble. I’ll be passing along the info as I hear it (as well as working on an easy grid for you to keep track of the news), but here are the early rumors on some of the shows. Remember all this is just speculation based on sources – all will be confirmed next week.

The CW
ALIENS IN AMERICA
will not be picked up by The CW for a second season. Nor will LIFE IS WILD or GIRLFRIENDS. But REAPER, who started off strong for The CW and never really lived up to expectations will get another chance and will be renewed.

FOX
Fox’s big name comedy, BACK TO YOU, starring Kelsey Grammar and Patrica Heaton will not be back on the Fox schedule. Joining Back to You on the chopping block will be K-VILLE and THE RETURN OF JEZEBEL JAMES. But freshman sci fi drama TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES will be back.

ABC
Rumors are swirling that ELI STONE will (thankfully) get a second season pick up. But freshman crime drama, WOMEN’S MURDER CLUB won’t be back. And it should come as no surprise but the alphabet network will also say goodbye to CARPOOLERS, CAVEMEN, BIG SHOTS and MEN IN TREES. More news on the other shows on Tuesday.

CBS
No big surprises here in terms of CBS’s canceled shows. Not returning are JERICHO, WELCOME TO THE CAPTAIN and VIVA LAUGHLIN. They have a few more on the bubble and we should know more next week.

NBC
No rumors here. NBC has already announced which shows they’re axing and picking up next year. Gone are BIONIC WOMAN, JOURNEYMAN (sniff, sniff), and LAS VEGAS. As for NBC’s new shows? Check back on Monday for a full list and a sneak peek at what NBC is giving us in 2008-09.

David Archuleta’s Father Banned from AMERICAN IDOL

May 10, 2008 by

Every week there’s a new rumor floating around about the alleged nightmare behavior of Jeff Archuleta, the father of AMERICAN IDOL contestant, David Archuleta.  There’s been talk of the senior Archuleta screaming at his son in front of the entire crew, his dismissive attitude towards the producers and even making things difficult for other IDOL contestants.  But as we get down to the final weeks of the competition, that might all be over.  According to TMZ.com and the Associated Press, Jeff Archuleta has been banned from the production of IDOL which included being present during his son’s rehearsals.  Mr. Archuleta can remain in the audience during the show but he is no longer allowed backstage.

The tipping point came on Tuesday night when during David’s performance of “Stand by Me” he inserted lyrics from the remake of the song made popular last year by Sean Kingston. The producers informed David during the week that he was not allowed to change the song.  But sources say Jeff Archuleta forced his son to sing the song the way he suggested, subsequently costing AMERICAN IDOL some big issues with Kingston’s people and a lot of money to boot.

The producers were rightfully upset and have banned Jeff Archuleta from being in the room while David was learning and rehearsing his songs for the remainder of the show’s run. Read more

Makin’ Music with John Mayer

I love John Mayer. Judge me…I can take it. I dig his music. I live for his blog updates. I’m a fan. And I find him funny as all get out. I can’t tell you how upset I was when my favorite episode of “John Mayer has a TV Show”* was unceremoniously deleted from my DVR (for a repeat of ‘Heroes’…so not worth it).

Anyway, John takes us through a day in the life of a rock star in this new video from FunnyorDie.com. I( can’t help but wonder if it’s a companion his his “douche bag post”). I was hard pressed to find a way to relate this to TV and post it here on GMMR when low and behold, Kristen Bell makes an appearance. John Mayer AND Kristen Bell? Done and done.

This video is NSFW so if you’re in proximity to children or your boss I’d thrown on the headphones.

*My favorite episode of “John Mayer has a TV Show” after the jump.

GOSSIP GIRL Spoilers: “Women on the Verge”

Filed under Gossip Girl, Gossip Girl Spoilers

There are only two episodes left of GOSSIP GIRL. That’s scandalous in and of itself. The post strike episodes have been the strongest to date and things are only going to get better. Serena’s naughty past will come to light and her estranged friends will band together to help her out in her time of need. But don’t expect boyfriend Dan to be the shoulder she’s crying on…he’s too busy smooching Georgina.

Ducky and I had a lot to say about last week’s GOSSIP GIRL. If you haven’t listened to our latest podcast, check it out here: TV Talk with GMMR & Ducky

If you just can’t wait until Monday, check out these three clips from the next all new episode, “Women on the Verge” airing on Monday at 8pm on The CW.

The Morning After: Thursday Night TV

May 9, 2008 by

This is one of those days when I turn GMMR over to you.  I’m a busy blogger today and I’m going to be away from a computer (gasp) for the next few hours.  I know, I know…Fridays are important, but this can’t be helped.

So if you want to talk about UGLY BETTY, GREY’S, SCRUBS, LOST or any of the other Thursday night shows, I turn the forum over to you.  Feel free to dazzle us with your own mini recaps, your insightful observations, or just bitch and moan to your hearts content.  I’ll be trying to reach the comments throughout the day as I know I’ll be thoroughly entertained.

Ugly Betty…
What is happening?  Most shows were invigorated by the time off they had during the strike but the BETTY writers seem to have lost their funny bone on the picket lines.  Betty throwing a shower for Charlie, her arch nemesis? Daniel becoming the Man-Ho….again?! Willie and Marc scheming in the back of a limo.  Snooze.  The only bright spots in the whole episode was Hilda’s new crush and Amanda eating disorder.  Bring back the funny! Please…I’m begging you.

Grey’s Anatomy…
Another great episode.  Why am I waiting for the other shoe to drop?  What a thrill to see Santiago (Benny Ciaramello) guesting as the soldier with the tumor.  That whole storyline had me on the verge of tears.  When Todd stood up to Mr. Covington and demanded to know what was going on with Darren only to find out he was dead.  Ugh.  So sad.  And cheers to David Giuntoli for an amazing performance as Todd.  I knew the actor looked familiar but I just couldn’t place him.  Then I was reading Ducky’s recap over at AfterElton.com and found out that he is an ex Road Ruler.  Oh yeah, now I remember.

In other hospital happenings, I’m still bored with the mere presence of Katherine Heigl.  She’s over the show, I’m over her.  It’s easy, just let Izzie go.  I loved Dr. Bailey’s freak out on the Chief.  It was 100% in character as we learned previously that she has some self esteem issues when it comes to men.  I’m ready for Mer and Derek to get back together, but if that means that Meredith has to leave therapy then I can wait a bit longer. I think it’s working and she needs to stick with it.

Who cares about Preston Burke’s award? Where is Christina Yang?  Did she leave when he did?  Maybe that’s the point she was trying to make in her speech to the Chief.  Who knows?  Who cares?

Lost…
Feel free to talk about LOST.  I can easily skip over those comments until I’ve had a chance to see it.  Yes, I missed LOST last night.  It was late people.  I finally got around to LOST around midnight and I found my eyes drooping while fighting to stay awake.  You wouldn’t want me to half ass watch an episode, right?  I need to be fully prepared for this week’s “Two Idiots Talk LOST”.  I’m counting down the minutes until I get to see it later today.  But feel free to chat it up.  I’ll be interested in reading your comments when I’m done.

So that’s that.  I turn my site over to you.  Annnnnd begin my little bloggers.
