BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Recap: Sine Qua Non

June 2, 2008 by

Title: Sine Qua Non
GMMR Recapper: Jo

39,674. This recap is not going as thorough as usual. I confess, I had the computer on while I was watching, which in my world means, I only heard half of the dialogue. But I do remember the big points and they did not resolve the major JUMP! Cliffhanger, so I think all three of us will do.

Athena shot a Six because of the Opera house visions. Adama was royally ticked off, so he threw her in the brig. But he can’t stay mad at anyone, so she had Hera sent to her. Saul’s been, um busy, with interrogating Caprica Six, because I think I heard the word pregnant in there. He and Bill get in some fisticuffs over the whole thing. Adama calls himself “blinded” by the loss of Roslin!!!! SQUEEE. Finally more than just looks and undertone, but bona fide verbalizations of love. Now, we’ve gotta go find her in the universe. Adama turns the Fleet over to a horrified Tigh (horrified because he’s a Cylon hater which now makes him a self-hater…as opposed to the self destructor he was before.) and “Husker” Adama volunteers to solo mission to find her. But then he pulls out a book to read and chills in the deep black sea. So, this is where I wasn’t paying attention. Did he tell Lee he was going to look for her? Or did Lee know he was just gonna chill by himself? Whatever, he loves Roslin.

Meanwhile, Badger is back. I call him Badger because of Firefly. Rent the DVDs people. Zarek becomes acting president, but Lee finally remembers that the dude is a total terrorist. So Lee goes to Badger to find a suitable replacement President. Somewhere in this, Badger’s cat dies, so he pulls a gun on Lee. Another one of those moments, that had I been paying attention, might’ve not been so confusing. But Lee talks him down, gets him a dog, and oh yeah LEE IS MADE COLONIAL PRESIDENT. So Say We All, Kids!!

If anything else happened, ya’ll will have to fill me in. I did see a drive by Dualla sighting and I might’ve even seen Lee and Starbuck in the same scene together. The promos are trying to make it out like D’anna said to Roslin “You don’t know you’re a Cylon”…but I think if that statement is taken in context, she was probably explaining how there could be five cylons who didn’t know. Not calling Roslin a Cylon.

Jo has a boring job in a small town in Texas and spends her hours daydreaming about Dillon Panther football, Samuel T. Anders and becoming a real life version of Veronica Mars. Her random TV rants can be found at http://tvonthebrain.wordpress.com.

Started reading your recaps recently. I usually like them but this one falls a little flat. I think maybe you should have re-watched it and paid attention to what happened before you posted. Can I request a little more analysis and judgments next time, rather than just a straight summary? I saw it too so I know what happened. Tell us what you think about it!

Jo, I think that Adama was waiting because that was the rendezvous site. He said he knew she would make it there, so he was going to just stay and wait. The fleet couldn’t stay because they had already been in one place for too long.

And about the whole “badger” and lee situation…I’m not sure if he was 100% sincere in his craziness. At the end he said “do you promise ” (…to do all the things lee was saying he would.) I’m not sure if he was trying to make lee realize he needed to be prez.

I thought it was a good episode for character development, particularly with Adama and Tigh. To be honest, as much as I love Lee, Lee centric storylines kinda bore me. I didn’t take Badger’s craziness as sincere either. But I’m hoping being President will finally give Lee the backbone his character has sorely needed since the miniseries.

Overall it was just as tense, but after two weeks and a major cliffhanger, it would’ve been nice to have spent some time in the baseship either with Roslin and Hybrid or Anders trying to stick his hand in the goo again.

Ouch JC!! Do you realize that no one who writes recaps for this website gets paid, including Kathy? Give Jo a break.

There were two Adama/Roslin scenes I picked up–

“Badger” and Adama have a convo involving the title–Sine Qua Non, which means “the things we take for granted without which life is meaningless” or something like that. Obviously they were hinting at Roslin.

Lee wonders why the heck his dad’s going off alone in a Raptor as everyone else jumps away. Why?
Adama: “Because I can’t live without her.”
