You Asked for it….it’s SUPERNATURAL!
September 26, 2008 by Kath Skerry
Here’s the deal. I can’t possibly watch all the shows that GMMR readers watch. It’s just not physically possible. As a result I know I’m missing out on some fantastic TV. It’s always been my philosophy not to blog about shows I don’t watch, but recently I’ve realized that just because I don’t watch it doesn’t mean YOU don’t want to talk about it. And that was the main reason for building out Team GMMR this year. More people to cover more shows. So that being said, I want to introduce you to Nicole, the latest addition to Team GMMR. Nicole will be covering SUPERNATURAL for us this season. GiveMeMyRemote.com might no be the authority on this show (I’ll leave that to Rae and Ducky), but you asked for it so we are covering it.
With that, I turn it over to Nicole…

Before I begin the review of last night’s episode, how about a shout-out to the awesome season premiere last week?
Seeing Dean rise from the grave and the little glimpses of the pain he was in while in hell, was great and terrifying. His reunions with Bobby and Sam most definitely caused my eyes to well up. Good ol’ Supernatural kept some light moments too to break up the emotion of it all which was great (“Are you guys together?).
Finally though, there were two huge revelations that changed the game completely for Season 4: Sam has been in cahoots with the still-alive (albeit in a different body) Ruby and he can now work some kind of crazy mojo against demons with just a raised hand and a stare! He hasn’t yet shared this little tidbit with Dean though – in fact he’s straight-up lied about what he’s been doing since Dean died. Dean on the other hand, holy hell! He is lying to Sam about not remembering his time in hell, but the major moment of the night comes at the very end when Dean and Bobby summon the thing that brought Dean back (and which has been burning out the eyes of others) only to find that it’s….an accountant. Okay, not an accountant, but rather and angel of the Lord possessing the body of a devout accountant. It seems that the Lord has some work for Dean and couldn’t let him die just yet. Yes, Supernatural fans, there is now officially a Team Good and Team Evil at war on the show and with Sam’s new secret alliance with Ruby, I have a sneaking suspicion that Sam and Dean may be working with/for different teams.
On to last night’s episode, which had me with its title alone: “Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean Winchester”. I love Sera Gamble even more for naming the episode after my favourite Judy Blume book of all time. The show found Dean and Bobby filling Sam in on Dean’s saving grace and Dean still doesn’t buy it. From Bobby’s research, it seems to be a legit story – not just anyone can raise someone from the pits of hell, you know. The show takes an interesting track when discussing whether it’s really possible that God exists – a subject that I thought they handled really well considering how touchy it can be. The way Sam sees it, it follows that if demons exist, so must angels. But Dean can’t see it that way because if God exists, then why is there so much needless suffering? Hmmm….life questions to ponder, presented by the Winchester boys.
The baddie of the week is several baddies; the ghosts of humans who had been wasted by hunters while possessed by various demons. It seems they’ve been leaving a path of dead hunters in their wake and are coming for the boys next. Agent Hendricks, Meg (did anyone recognize her until they explained?? She looked like a completely different person!), and some creepy little girls show up and set their sights on Dean, Sam and Bobby respectively. The little girls paralyze Bobby until the boys can rescue him. I’ve only had a chance to watch once, but did it seem like Sam used his demon-mojo on one of the girls right in front of Bobby? Tell me if anyone saw that or if I just hallucinated. The three hunters manage to take care of the ghosts, but not before they are made to realize the magnitude of what they do when they kill innocent people in their quest to kill demons. It seems that Meg’s little sister had killed herself after Meg’s death, and Agent Hendricks was tortured along with everyone else in the station before being put of his misery by Lillith. I was actually really glad that they covered this topic, because it is a bit of a gray area on the show. We know that a lot of these people die, and that they were all more or less innocents until the demons took over, so how do you reconcile that in your conscience? Well done, Supernatural – you gave us a lot to think about this week.
Not least of which is another visit from accountant/angel Castiel, who visits once again with Dean and informs him that the ghosts, who had each borne the brand of the witness, were one of 66 seals that Lillith is breaking to bring about the Apocalypse and with it, the rise of Lucifer. Holy hell! The show is really pulling no punches this year and I LOVE it.
Do you think that Dean and Sam will end up on opposite sides of the good/evil spectrum? Are you liking the new twists this season? What were your favorite moments of the night? I personally loved the scene in Bobby’s iron panic room – a little levity in a pretty heavy ep. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

First off, that’s Kath and Nichole for covering this, my favorite of shows.
I really loved this episode. While they have touched on God and faith in the past, it’s never been an ongoing theme. It needs to be. You can’t have evil without good. Period. I hope that the show continues to balance the good/evil as they have in the 1st two episodes. While Sam appears to be the evil one, he is the one that has no problem with god and angels. Dean, on the other hand, while seemingly the “good” brother (due only to the fact that he was pulled out of hell by an angel) has no faith. Bobby is Switzerland.
I loved that Meg came back and was again a badass and not pnly made Dean feel like crap, she called Sam on his demon girlfriend Ruby. Go Meg! She said what the fandom has been saying. I am sure we will get an answer at some point but it’s good to know that we think like the show does.
Also loved: continued pie references, sleeping boys and Henrickson. Oh, and panic room. Excellent.
I am freaking over the previews for next week. I may be a spoiler hound but you can never be 100% spoiled and I can’t wait for next Thursday!
I agree with Patty, you cannot have evil without good as well. It kept nagging at me before, all these demons and whatnots without the angels? Come on 🙂
Now we have angels (who are quite good looking if I might add) but of course in true Supernatural way, they are not really all that fuzzy and angelic… this season kicks ass 🙂
Thanks for the good recap/review.
One little quibble. The ghosts were not necessarily killed by huners; it was just that hunters didn’t save them and the ghosts thought they should have been saved – or at least the spellbound ghosts did – I am not sure how much of their anger was theirs versus Lilth’s induced anger.
I really wanted to see Sam’s powers so I’m probably one of the few who were glad that he finally began using them. But I wouldn’t want Sam turning into the bad guy Dean has to fight with at the end. It seems to be too much of a cliché. On the other hand everything is pointing to that scenario. I guess the more Sam uses his power, the more he’ll turn into something evil. Then again, the angel told Dean that he thought Dean was the chosen one (or something along those lines) and that’s why he thought Dean could see and hear his real self. But that he was wrong. Maybe it’s Sam? And the yellow-eyed demon either knew or made a mistake. That could be the thing saving Sam. Either way, I love how the show has those amazing story lines.
While I was watching the second episode, all I was thinking was: “Don’t kill Bobby, don’t you dare kill Bobby!” I love his character! Just had to add that 😀
I’m so happy that GMMR is covering this show now! It’s truly the best, and I feel like I’m the ONLY person on the planet who watches it. Great recap!
Lex you aren’t the only one watching it! Me too! I have made is my goal to bring at least two new people into the fold each year. And they tell two friends and so on. So far it’s working I know of 3 new people that scrambled to watch all three seasons over the summer and that’s just me! I really think our show is going to explode this year!
