Sarah Palin on SNL with Alec Baldwin & Tina Fey

October 19, 2008 by

Governor Sarah Palin…the real one and the one portrayed by Tina Fey made an appearance on SNL this week in what was one of the best opening skits in a long time.  I was also overjoyed that Alec Baldwin joined in on the funny.  When we heard the rumor that Palin was going to be guesting we had hoped that Baldwin would make an appearance.  Someone at SNL is clearly reading this blog.  (Ok, probably not).

Sarah Palin was a fantastic sport tonight. From the opening bit with Alec Baldwin, who ridiculed her personal qualifications on Bill Maher’s show recently, to her soulful chair dance during Weekend Update, I think we can agree that Palin avoided the trap of self-importance that so many public officials fall into. I may not be in the McCain/Palin ’08 camp on election day, but I give her a bipartisan thumbs up for finding the humor in the midst of a long and divisive race.

I respect that she came on the show, but it would have been nice if she had more than 5 lines. She’s proven that she can memorize lines after seeing her debate.

Kudos to Palin being a good sport, but I was a bit disappointed in what the writers wrote for Tina Fey. It was the most biased and least funny bit that they’ve made for her so far. But I suppose they did it on short notice.

I actually thought the Wahlberg cameo was the funniest part. It’s funnier if you’ve seen Wahlberg comment on the skit (which was posted here).

I definitely enjoyed the opening. It was genius to have Alec Baldwin as part of the skit. I’m not particularly crazy about him, but their work together was not too shabby. The Weekend Update was okay, but it could’ve been funnier. I would’ve liked to have seen more material written for her. McCain was hilarious at the Alfred E. Smith dinner. They should’ve done some stuff like that for her as well. I love people who are willing to poke fun at themselves.

This was a great skit – Tina Fey is spot on as Palin, and throwing the real Palin *and* Alec Baldwin into the mix was genius. I wish there would have been a bit more of Fey and Palin together, but … oh well. Well worth staying up late for on a Saturday night.
