CRUSOE: Bones

This week’s episode centers around the ever-so-appetizing subject of cannibalism.

A group of cannibals arrive on the island and when Crusoe and Friday realize the cannibals have brought captives with them, they realize they must try to save the captives before they try to escape themselves. They’re able to fend off the cannibals and rescue one of the captives, and when they pull off the captive’s mask, we learn it’s none other than the Spanish captain Santana.

Crusoe and Friday take Santana back to their tree house where they tie him up and hold him captive. Santana keeps asking them to let him go so he can save his fellow captive, but Friday and Crusoe aren’t totally convinced his motives are pure. (They think he actually wants to steal the cannibals’ boat). Crusoe and Friday leave the tree house and discuss how to handle Santana, but Santana escapes and holds them at gunpoint and then escapes into the woods as their backs are turned.

It turns out that Santana was actually being honest because Crusoe and Friday go looking for him in the woods and find him watching the cannibals and waiting for his chance to free his fellow captive. In a twist that I honestly didn’t see coming, we find out the captive that Santana insists on rescuing is Friday’s father.

The guys set off to rescue Friday’s father, who has already been taken to the top of the cliff to be sacrificed. They are able to rescue his father, but in the process Santana is injured. Since Santana is injured, the guys decide to let Santana and Friday’s father leave in the boat and then tell them to return later for Friday and Crusoe. Once again, Crusoe and Friday miss their chance to escape.

I was so excited to see Santana return, because I was really, really hoping that we would have the return of pirate Judy. It was a huge excitement to see them pull off the mask of the first captive and find out it was Santana, so I was hoping that Judy would show up at some point. I would love to see her return again in another episode. The chemistry she and Crusoe had was just too great to never have her be a part of the storyline again.

What was with Crusoe not thinking and leaving Santana alone in the tree house and not tied up securely enough? Can somebody explain to me how a man who is intelligent enough to survive on a deserted island for as long as he has and has been able to outwit invaders to his island does that?

My favorite part of this whole episode was learning that Friday wasn’t as much of a savage as what we assumed he was before he met Crusoe. It’s no secret that he used to be a cannibal, so I assumed that meant he ate human flesh. Apparently Crusoe thought the same because he was shocked when Friday told him that he wasn’t a flesh eating cannibal – he was a bone eating cannibal. That’s right, bones. Friday and his people would grind up the bones of their dead ancestors and then eat them as a way of growing closer and connecting to them. It’s still not appetizing, but at least it’s better than eating flesh, right?

I’m becoming increasingly convinced that Blackthorn knows where Crusoe is. I’m not really sure why I think this except for my gut feeling, but hey, truthiness counts for something doesn’t it? The writers might have possibly given us a small hint this week that something like that is possible when we learned that Crusoe asked Blackthorn for a pass out of the city in order to replenish his ship’s stock after pirates overtook it. It would definitely be a great plot twist to watch poor Crusoe try to get off the island time and time again, when someone knew exactly where he was the entire time. Does anybody else think Blackthorn somehow set Crusoe up to disappear and might possibly know where he is?
