DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES Recap: What More Do I Need?

November 11, 2008 by

With one week to go until the annual big November Sweeps stunt, this episode was largely about setting up plot lines. All of the housewives seem to be heading towards a crossroads. In other words, it’s about to hit the fan.

Lynette accuses Tom of having an affair, only to find out that Porter is actually the one sleeping with Anne (who happens to be Porter’s best friend’s mom). Tom and Lynette don’t seem to know how to handle this (not that I can blame them). They end up forbidding Porter from seeing her and Lynette even goes so far as to threaten to kick him out if he continues to do so. In one of the episode’s best scene’s Lynette physically attacks Anne in the bathroom at a PTA meeting. Felicity Huffman did a great job here; Lynette’s anger was completely believable. Towards the end of the episode, we find out that Anne is pregnant (presumably with Porter’s baby) and she and Porter are planning to flee town. My question through all of this is, exactly how old is Porter? He seems like he’s way to young to be having sex, let alone with a married woman. There’s a line in the episode that suggests he’s about to leave for college, but I can’t believe he was 13 before the five year jump. Speaking of the five-year jump, I have some major issues with that below.

CALIFORNICATION: In A Lonely Place

November 11, 2008 by

A big storm is brewing and I just can’t wait to see what happens! Last night’s episode seemed to be the calm before the storm. Most of the 30 minute episode, titled A Lonely Place, was a conflict in the making that I’m sure will make for an explosive and eventful episode next week. Most of our favorite characters appear to be having a mid life crisis and are ending up in the arms of people we would least expect!

Getting back to this week’s highlights what I thought would be quite a falling out between Lew and Hank just didn’t play out the way I predicted. Last week when we spotted Lew and Mia together at the end of the episode it was a sure thing the new roomies would be going at it. Instead Hank patiently tells Ashby that his random sexual hook-ups with the underage head case Mia have to come to an end. The rock star, who takes an oath, has hoards of groupies chasing him so what’s with his interest in Mia? In the end Lew doesn’t keep his word and Hanks ends up catching the couple in bed. After attempting to talk reason with the crazy kids Hank gives up when Mia threatens to divulge their former one night fling! Hank does walk away with a great door prize though! A guitar that has been played by Kurt Cobain.

Going Back to Cali…to Cali..to Cali…

I’m off to see the Wizard in what is my own personal Oz. Later today I’m taking to the friendly skies and heading to Los Angeles for the first time since April!! It’s been a long time and I’m so excited to get there!

I’ve got a lot planned for this week. Besides catching up with some friends, I hope to have some exciting TV adventures! I don’t want to say too much right now as I fear that I will jinx myself, but if things work out as planned I’ll be spending some time with some of my personal TV faves.

One thing I can tell you is that I will be heading to the set of THE BIG BANG THEORY tomorrow night to catch up with Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, Howard, Raj and Penny and watch them shoot an episode. How fun?! I think you all know how much I love that show, so you can imagine how excited I am.

As for my other TV adventures…well, just keep checking back to GMMR for updates. And as always, keep in touch with my latest rants at Twitter.com/GMMR.

As I’ll be flying today/tonight, things might be a little quiet around here, but I hope you’ll forgive me.

P.S.  Some back end changes were made to the site on Friday in the hopes of making GMMR run a little faster.  Can you let me know if you notice any difference – good or bad?

XOXO

DEXTER: Easy as Pie

Before I get started with this week’s review, I have to give a warning to the GMMR/”Dexter” audience. Do not, under any circumstances, mix ethical philosophy and “Dexter”. Reading about how to judge right and wrong or good and evil and then watching Dexter ride the line between all of them makes one brain hurt.

You’ve been warned.

This week was a good episode, but it really seemed to be a connector to next week’s big development. We did, though, have some great moments and some storylines that hit milestones that we should recognize. Ryan commented last week on how “stepping stone” episodes for “Dexter” can be so strong, and I would have to agree.

I think the thread of Deb finding her own way as a detective has finally come full circle this week. I’ve loved watching her grow all season and her all-nighter paid off HUGE! Did anyone out there make a connection with the palm trees? I’m loving that and I hope that Deb’s somewhat less-than-tactful person skills won’t screw her out of a shield by the end of the season.

CRUSOE: The Mutineers

Crusoe is back this week and has redeemed itself.

While Friday and Crusoe are trying to catch a boar that has stolen Crusoe’s shirt, they encounter the mutineers from last week’s episode who are still on the island trying to repair their ship. So the mutineers won’t see them, they have to head back to the treehouse in a different way than they originally came. On their way back, Crusoe looks up and sees an abandoned boat in a tree. While the boat isn’t in the greatest shape, Crusoe thinks he can fix it. He and Friday devise a pulley system to get the boat out of the tree and when they’re able to get it down, they discover a compass inside the boat. The guys start working on rebuilding the boat and while they are working on the mast, Friday accidentally knocks the compass into the fire where the heat melts the needle.

Supernatural: Wishful Thinking

Supernatural

Hey all! So, last night’s episode was extremely….interesting, no? I mean, how often, even on this show, do you get to witness a suicidal man-sized talking teddy bear shoot himself in the head? That Lollipop Disease is killer – they should have a telethon. This was a bit of a stand- alone episode, except for one issue that I’ll discuss later, and the ep was overall kind of just okay in my opinion (but hey – okay for Supernatural is phenomenal for most other shows, so I’m not complaining). There were some fabulous moments and some huge laughs, but on the whole I think we’ve seen some much stronger comedic episodes of this show.

The episode opened with a woman in the shower being watched by something very mysterious and creepy (who else got excited when they saw the shower, only to be disappointed that there wasn’t a Winchester in there?). When she threw her towel over the invisible mystery stalker and there was clearly something there, a voice, cracking like crazy, yelped out in a most unthreatening manner. Of course she was freaked out, because who wouldn’t be, but it was pretty funny nonetheless. Upon hearing of a haunted shower at a ladies’ health club, Dean became extremely concerned for the safety of the clientele and the boys were there pronto. Upon arriving in to town, they hear a local talking of seeing Bigfoot in the woods and then stumble upon a liquor store that has been ransacked, with all of the girlie liquor and the porn being stolen. I was pretty convinced we had a whole gang of teenage boys running amok with all of the voice cracking and porn-and-amaretto stealing, but it turns out the perpetrators of these two crimes were VERY different indeed.

BONES: The Skull in the Sculpture

Holler back, Bones fans!

It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? I’ve missed our talks, and even more than that, I’ve missed new BONES episodes. I have a lot to say about this week’s episode, so as Sweets probably said to Daisy, let’s get it on!

The Case:
This case, and the whole episode actually, felt very ‘season one’ to me, in a ‘where is my bear poop’ kind of way (which is a good thing). Motives were plentiful, as well as suspects, which is always good. We’ve seen the two drunk/stoned/whatever guys find a dead body already this year, but…maybe that’s how dead bodies are found everyday, and I don’t know it.

I didn’t like how toward the end when Brennan ‘figured out’ who the murderess was because of the skin discoloration. Um, once that was mentioned, I think we pretty much all knew what was up.

THE OFFICE: Customer Survey

Kelly Kapoor

Forget about Jim & Pam, I’m now officially in the camp of Dwight & Jim.  The power couple of THE OFFICE proved that while compelling apart, they are at their best when they are together.

I laughed my ass of last night during an episode that was tight and well managed.  I know that seems a rather bland commentary on my favorite show, but I think it’s true. Last night’s episode felt like a well-oiled machine and I enjoyed every last bit of it.

Let’s just jump in to the best bits from last night, because I’m pretty sure if you are reading this you don’t need a recap.  If you haven’t yet watched, stop reading and jump on over to Hulu to watch.  I don’t mind…just come back and share your thoughts.

Before we go much further, may I offer a few of you a hand and help you take a few steps back from the ledge.  Listen, Jim and Pam will be fine.  Yes, it was a pretty heavy scene when Jim overheard Pam’s friend (who wants so much more) tell her she needed to be in NYC and not in Scranton, but we all knew it was coming.  Come on you had to know that this would be explored.  And while I think we just got the foundation for Jim and Pam’s storyline when the show does eventually end, I don’t think Pam is going anywhere but Scranton…and hopefully soon. Don’t worry…our kids will be fine.

30 Rock Recap

Thank you, Oprah, for demonstrating that you get the joke, because while I worship you (which is maybe not something I should admit), I have had my doubts about this. In the past you’ve seemed willing to laugh at many things but not so much at spoofs of your public persona, although for that I suppose we can thank David Letterman. Then you went and proved me wrong by guesting on TV’s best sitcom and letting Liz Lemon paw you and snore on you and call you Barpoh. Which consequently proves me right for worshiping you in the first place. So, win-win-win!

GREY’S ANATOMY: Rise Up…But Not from the Dead

Grey's Anatomy

It’s been quite a long time since GREY’S ANATOMY brought me to tears, but  last night that show damn near killed me…and a few patients too.

Let me get this off my chest and then I can move on.  Enough with Denny Duquette.  I get it, everyone loved Denny.  I loved Denny, too.  But with every episode that they gratuitously bring him back I think it does a disservice to his incredible original storyline.  I enjoy the pretty that is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but I think Denny’s ghost needs to be vanquished for good. Venkman, Spengler…you’ve got work to do, boys.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

It’s proven to be an extremely eventful few days, and I hope everyone took part in a historic election on Tuesday! Philly (by way of Pennsylvania) played a big part in Tuesday night, so I thought that maybe many of you loyal “It’s Always Sunny” viewers might like to get a dose of Philly in your daily lives.

On with tonight’s episode, where “The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell”!

Who knew the gang was a part of a major historical event, like the cracking of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia? Well, according to Mac, Charlie and Dennis, who were busy telling a poor old woman – who had a portrait of President George Washington they wanted to cut out – a story about how Paddy’s Pub, then known as Patrick’s Pub in 1776, the historical events that led to that famous crack on the bell.

DIRTY SEXY MONEY – The Verdict

Poor Gretchen and her kids were sick and she still managed to put together her take on last night’s DIRTY SEXY MONEY. All that work and I’m just getting around to posting it now. I’m the worst. Sorry, Gretchen!! Make you show her the love.

The Cat’s Out of the Bag

A number of secret alliances were revealed during this week’s episode, “The Verdict”. Nick pressured Jeremy to confess about his relationship with Nola. Jeremy eventually agreed (after Nick threatened to “kick his ass all over Park Avenue” and Nick took the information straight to the judge who, in turn, dismissed the case against Leticia due to prosecutorial misconduct. As much as Nick seemed happy to stick it to Nola, he was probably even happier to stick it to Jeremy since he had just learned that Jeremy was to blame for more of the ever-increasing problems in Nick and Lisa’s marriage.

At Lisa’s gallery opening, Nick is told that Jeremy is the true owner of the gallery, not Lisa. Although I was sure that Nick would find out about this eventually and that Lisa was completely delusional in thinking that she could keep it a secret, I was surprised that (a) he found out so soon and that (b) Joel Madden was (randomly) the person delivering the news.

Privileged – All About Defining Yourself

Well, despite having the election on the brain last night and watching much more CNN than can be healthy in one evening, I did manage to watch Privileged as well, just before catching some much needed zzzzz’s. My sleep deprivation was well worth it though as I got to witness history in the making along with a very satisfying hour of tv goodness. It seems that the Privileged writers had politics on the brain too, as noted by all of the voting references present in tonight’s episode. We had Sage wearing an awesome “Rock the Vote” shirt (combining glitter and civic responsibility is always a good idea), various cast members were rocking the “I Voted” sticker and Megan noted that she and her dad had taken a trip to the voting booth together. Kudos Privileged!
