What to Watch…Thursday, December 11, 2008

It’s Thursday!  Have you heard?!  It’s Thursday!!  And not just any Thursday, it’s the Thursday that will finally bring us THE OFFICE Christmas episode!! The WGA strike robbed us last year so I’m hoping for something extra special tonight.

Earl discovers that Joy has continued a holiday scam they started years before, and has expanded the scam to include her friends.




Survivor | 8pm on CBS
A pushy castaway could land in hot water after using guilt to control an ally; the hidden immunity idol is put into play at the tribal council; one castaway is eliminated.

Kath & Kim | 8:30pm on NBC
Kath and Phil plan a holiday party to meet some “couple” friends; Kim and Craig find their friendship with Derrick (Jay Phillips) tested at a holiday party.

The Office | 9pm on NBC
Meredith’s hair catches fire at Phyllis’ Moroccan-themed Christmas party; Dwight corners the market on the hottest toy of the holiday season.

HOUSE Recap: Joy to the World

In the world of entertainment, is there anything more disappointing than a movie trailer that gives away too much? After paying a small fortune for your ticket, medium popcorn, and bucket sized soda, is it too much to ask to be surprised? These bite size disappointments occur in all genres, too. Whether you have deduced the shocking twist in the next M. Night Shyamalan thriller or seen every funny joke in Adam Sandler’s summer tentpole, the letdown is palpable. Absent the joy that comes with seeing these creative morsels for the first time, the big screen experience is spoiled for those resting their weary feet on sticky floors across America.

Though this week’s House did not cost me any hard earned money, considering it is on broadcast TV, I do believe that the episode was tainted by a commercial full of revelations and a disjointed story.

LOST Season 4 on DVD – Enter to Win!! (UPDATE)

LOST returns for its fifth season on Wednesday, January 21st.  Can you stand it?!  I can’t wait!!  As one-half of “Two Idiots Talk Lost“, I need to do a little brushing up on Season 4 before I am properly ready to take on Season 5.

I got an advanced copy of S4 of LOST, which hits stores on December 9th,  and let me tell you – it’s all kinds of awesome.  A ton of special features – deleted scenes, bloopers, featurettes, audio commentary – a LOST fans dream.  The season might have been shortened but the producers didn’t skimp out on the DVD.

Two lucky GMMR readers are also going to get Lost Season 4 on DVD. But I’m going to make you work for it. So I just got a bunch of emails saying 50 questions were WAY too many to answer. Come on people, really? Ok, fine. I’ll make it easier.

Maybe it’s not the real set, but in the second of his new nightly videos, Jimmy Fallon shows us the model of his new ‘Late Night’ set.  It looks pretty cool – trap doors and all.  Love the idea of the fans of the performing bands really getting involved.

CALIFORNICATION: Blues from Laurel Canyon

With Californication ready to call it a wrap for season 2 it seems creator Tom Kapinos is cleaning house on a few on going issues in our favorite characters lives while also bringing some new conflict to the table for season 3. Yes, Showtime has ordered another season of Hank’s womanizing ways.

So off to the highlights of this past weekend’s episode. We left off with Hank relieved of the news that he has contracted syphilis, Runkle and Daisy’s ongoing extra marital affair and Marcy’s return to the real world after cleaning up in rehab.

Privileged: All About The Ripple Effect

In an episode that was particularly notable (I thought) for some fraktastic dialogue and realism, we had a surprising number of laughs in what I went into thinking would be a heavy, drama-laden hour. Megan’s mom is back, dad’s okay with it, Lilly’s married(!) and Megan’s going insane. Megan’s dad is on board with good ole’ Mom, leaving Megan to feel like she’s alone in crazytown for not wanting to give her mother a chance. Luckily she has Charlie to confide in – he knows all the players, he’s an interested party who doesn’t have to be caught up, but yet he isn’t her boyfriend. Her actual boyfriend on the other hand…well, frankly he’s a little pissed.

CHUCK vs. The Delorean

Oh, you guys, I seriously, SERIOUSLY loved this episode. It was such a welcome after last week’s, as the consensus seems to be that it was sort of a dud. And we once again had impeccable guest star casting—Gary Cole was amazing in ways that I didn’t even know he could be. But I’m getting ahead of myself, so shall we?

I feel like it must have been in the previews, because I knew that Sarah was going out with her dad, even before he was introduced as such. I want to yell at the NBC promo monkeys for giving that away, but I can’t, because I think it actually made Chuck’s rant about what a scumbag he was more entertaining, given that we knew what was coming. And seriously, that little girl was just the spitting image of Sarah—more great casting. Can we get these people a raise?

I think this episode really nailed it on the subtleties, which is where I think Chuck really shines. There is something about the juxtaposition of these outrageous plots and action balanced with great character stuff and subtle jokes that I don’t really feel like I see anywhere else, and it makes everything feel really fresh.

GOSSIP GIRL Says Goodbye to the Not So Dearly Departed

We must talk about last night’s GOSSIP GIRL.  Honestly, I haven’t decided if I loved it or hated it yet.  There was a LOT of overacting, and a lot of just weak writing, but then there was also that sometimes comical, sometimes heartbreaking performance by Ed Westwick (Chuck Bass).

Basshole Sr. is dead.  His body isn’t even cold yet (I’m talking literally here), before Lily decides that she’s going to make a go of it with Rufus.  That was until the mystery surrounding Lily’s French hospitalization is revealed – she and Rufus had a baby together!!  While it’s not majorly shocking, I’m not sure if I saw that one coming.  Rufus is pissed. But I’m left wondering when we’ll meet the newest (or rather original) member of the van der Woodsen-Humphrey family.  And will he/she Van Der Humphrey think it odd that his/her brother and sister have banged?  Intriguing.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: The Fight

Last night was chock full of the past (Ted being punched on St. Patty’s Day), the present, the future (stop mocking us with the goat, damn you!) and even a spoiler for the “Sex and the City” movie! This episode was like an assault rifle. BAM BAM BAM, things were happening constantly, I could barely type fast enough to keep up while watching.

The last episode centered on “The Naked Guy” routine and how each member of the gang was affected by it. This episode is how everyone feels about fighting, with Doug (Will Sasso “MADtv”) as the catalyst. The series has been headed to more episodic writing but still maintaining what makes it different from all the other half-hour comedies that are on now and come before it – HIMYM can play with history and the future but they don’t rewrite it to suit their needs (“Friends,” I’m talking to you!). This episode played with the fact that Doug, a bartender that we have never heard or seen before, has been around for ages. Clips of old episodes interspersed with Doug were cleverly used, like Barney’s journey to bag a lesbian.

Watch Jimmy Fallon’s First Video Blog

The first installment of Jimmy Fallon’s new late night blog was launched last night.  It was a little frantic and way too short, but hopefully things will fall into a rhythm soon.  Speaking of rhythm, it was confirmed that The Roots are Jimmy’s new late night band.  Um, hello AWESOME!!!

I’ll start…Jimmy, you need to learn to read from a cue card so it doesn’t look like you are reading from a cue card. Al those years on SNL and you didn’t master that?

BROTHERS & SISTERS: Just a Sliver

Happy Monday Tuesday GMMRers (sorry I forgot to post this yesterday), Jamie here again with your Brother’s and Sisters action. Tthis week it’s a Walker Thanksgiving (a wee bit late).

The Walker siblings have all have made other plans for Thanksgiving, leaving Nora and Sarah to celebrate alone, until a medical emergency brings the family together and Elizabeth’s biological father’s identity is discovered.

Can I say that it was nice to see the Walker’s actually supporting each other, none of them had a complete personality change. This week they put aside any pettiness and apart from a few very minor scraps and arguments, there was no massive Walker family breakdown –  a Thanksgiving miracle.

Jay Leno to Stay on NBC

Lots ‘o movement at NBC.  NBC is set to announce that Jay Leno will be given his own Monday thru Friday talk show.  But with Conan taking over the The Tonight Show and Fallon taking over for Conan on Late Night, where will Jay land?  How about 10pm? Done and done.

Giving Leno the nightly 10pm slots is a win-win (win).  Jay is at the top of his game and still has a huge following.  Creating this new show for Jay ensure that he and his fans stick around NBC and don’t defect to another network.  But the move also means that NBC has less primetime to program.  Rather than being responsible for an 8-11pm schedule each weeknight, the network only needs to worry about 8-10pm.  Good thing for NBC because Ben Silverman doesn’t seem to be good at finding new programming (which is disappointing since that is his job).

But the good news is that Jay Leno is sticking around.  I’m glad for Jay that this worked itself out.

Has T.R. Knight Quit GREY’S ANATOMY?

The rumors via blind items have been hovering for quite some time, and now it seems that there may be some to truth about a rift between GREY’S star T.R. Knight and the show that put him on the map.

Of course no official statement has been made, but here’s both side of the rumor.

An entertainment lawyer who posts at CrazyDaysandNights.net first posted that T.R. walked off the set, and followed up with this, supposedly from a source:

“He [T.R.] hasn’t attended table reads since episode 2. He is pissed and miserable and thinks his story line is stupid. He said goodbye to his hair and makeup people last week. He says he is done and has quit. ABC has not released him. Shondra Rhimes, the producer called him and he told her he had nothing to say. He has packed his dressing room.”

US Magazine went right to a rep from Grey’s who said, “T.R. has never walked off set in the middle of filming. He attended the table read today and will be shooting this week, like any other week of production.”

Given the dark cloud (aka The Curse of the Burke) that has followed around GREY’S, my gut is telling me that there may be a hint of truth to this rumor. I guess we’ll just wait and see.
