BROTHERS & SISTERS: “A Father Dreams”
January 5, 2009 by Jamie
Happy New Year GMMRers!! Jamie here with ya and I’m back after a long winter hiatus and so are our favorite Walkers. I hope you all had a wonderful break but let’s jump right in to last night’s episode.
I have to say this was my favorite episode so far this season, loved it. Kevin’s liver transplant recovery and crazy dreams caused a volatile and emotional confrontation between Kevin and Tommy and a minor quarrel between Nora and Scotty. Meanwhile, Saul reintroduced a man from Nora’s past and Justin finally decides to leave the nest. No Holly or Rebecca sighting at all in this episode but we got a lot of wonderful Scotty and Saul scenes, heck even Julia played an interesting role this week.
Kevin’s dreams were personally my favorite part of this week’s episode. They were foggy and crazy but in the end reassured him that one day he could be a great father. First he dreams that a baby’s cry wakes him while the rest of the family feasts on liver, then Scotty in an old soldier’s uniform fighting with Nora about wine. In one dream he and Julia get it on (boy that was kinda a dirty dream). Kevin also dreams of the future where he acts as a father figure to an 8-year-old Elizabeth.
This week we also saw Scotty and Nora battling to be Kevin’s caregiver. Nora at every opportunity bashed Scotty’s abilities and was totally insensitive to Scotty’s disappointment when she pushed him aside. I know she is thinking of her son’s recovery but so is Scotty, shame on you Nora. However the baby monitor eavesdropping was priceless, Scotty looked mortified. She does apologize to him in the end, don’t worry, we will talk about that in bit.
Cooper brings Justin to class for his show-and-tell as the person he admires most, awe so cute. But Justin isn’t brought along because he is a war hero. Cooper thinks it’s cool that Justin lives with his mom and plays video games all day…BURN. Man it sucks when grade school kids serve up the harsh truth. Sarah feels horrible but also thinks this could be the swift kick in the ass that Justin may need.
With Kevin laid up Kitty fills as Communications Director for Robert. They argue, fight, flirt and politically bicker which of course leads to naughty office sex. Seriously why did they bother shutting the frosted glass door if they were going to press right up against it? Hello we can still see you and I bet the entire office did. They do eventually realize that with the book and the baby Kitty can’t work for him but she’ll miss the “brain sex”.
Saul the sneaky devil tries to get Nora to hire Roger, an architect William had once worked for her charity home renovation, but Nora wants nothing to do with him. Not taking Nora’s no for an answer, Saul calls Roger anyway. Nora is acting very strange and really seems uncomfortable around Roger.
Kevin wakes up from his racy dream about Julia to find her sitting by his bed. That combined with Scotty and Nora’s fussing over him causes Kevin to snap and make a break for it. He enlists Justin as his getaway driver. He however forgets his pills and Justin has to sneak into the house to retrieve them. Antics ensued and in order to get out of there with the pills Justin spills the beans to Nora about Saul’s new boyfriend.
Later, Saul discovers a drunken Nora leaving the slushiest apology message on Scotty’s voicemail (so funny, imagine your mother in-law doing that). Over a glass of wine he gets Nora to tell him what’s going on. It seems that she flirted with Roger once at a party 30 years ago in an attempt to make William jealous. Roger reminds her of the women she once was (sad and pathetic) and she hates that. Saul and Nora drink more wine and talk it through. Nora very sisterly teases about his new boyfriend, it was cute.
Kevin and Justin end up at a swanky beach hotel and he calls Sarah to retrieve more pills for him and break the new of his escape to Nora. She does and decides to bring along Tommy to have a sibling “career intervention” for Justin at the hotel. While the siblings try to convince Justin that it’s time he found his own place, Scotty tracks Kevin down and confronts him. Kevin admits he fled because of the dreams he has been having about Elizabeth. Tommy freaks and leaves but returns shortly with a legal agreement making Kevin pledge to never reveal to Elizabeth that he is her father. They fight, again. I feel that Tommy is just feeling threatened by this entire thing and is just acting out, and do you blame him?
Justin confides to Sarah that he is terrified about leaving the Walker house. The last time he lived alone he overdosed. He knows he needs to make this step, and that he’s ready for it. He breaks the news to Nora that he’s moving out and she takes it remarkably well and is quite proud of him.
Kevin shows up at Tommy and Julia’s with the signed papers. The brothers talk it out. Kevin assure Tommy that he is and we end with Kevin holding Elizabeth (isn’t he recovering from major surgery?) and gabbing away to her.
Well, what are your thoughts on this episode? This week we had a record number of brother and sister chats and lectures, do you agree? How hot was Julia in that dream sequence? Didn’t you love that Kevin forgot to cover his tracks or anything really, such an amateur. Plus I’m still waiting on Ryan’s arrival. When do you think we’re going to meet him?? I simply adore Scotty? Do you think Kevin and Scotty will have a baby in the future?
P.S.: Congrats to Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths on their much deserved nominations for Golden Globes. Sally Field was nominated for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama” and Rachel Griffiths was nominated for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series”. Not only that but our “Nora”, Sally Field was additionally nominated for a People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Female TV Star. Yay for our Brothers and Sisters ladies and our fingers are crossed for you both!
Until next week…

Your Brothers and Sisters devotee for this season is Jamie aka Jamer (GMMR handle). She hails from Vancouver BC and is pumped to be adding a dash of Canadian flare to the GMMR. So what will the Walker’s have in store for us this year? I don’t know but let’s enjoy the bumpy ride together!

Loved Cooper’s performance as he explained to his class why Uncle Justin was the coolest. Video gaming prowess is, of course, impressive…lol.
Where was Rebecca this week? Why wasn’t she called in with the sibs to help Justin realize it was time to move out of Nora’s womb?
Lastly, loved Kitty and Robert’s “Brain Sex.”
Hey Jamie!
I loved the episode too and that dream sequence with Julia…hot damn. Kevin is just plain sexy I tells ya.
I agree with Alyson – where WAS Rebecca? There was plenty of opportunity to have her on with the Justin storyline. It was actually kind of weird that she wasn’t there.
I felt for Scotty too – Nora, get a clue! But the drunken apology made it all worth it. I also loved Saul and Nora’s tete-a-tete in the pantry.
Lastly…I want to LIVE at that hotel they were at. Given that I’m in Toronto right now the visuals of warmth, sand, ocean and did I mention WARMTH are almost too much to bear.
Really, Jamie?
I thought this was on the lower end of spectrum, quality-wise. Every time Kevin had another one of his dreams, I gagged. Yuck, hated those parts. And I couldn’t tell which was worse. Seeing Julia or seeing her in Kevin’s dream. Sorry, but she and Tommy have always been the characters that turn me off the most.
At least the Scotty and Kevin moments always make up for a lot. Do you think they’ll stay married or will they have a Prop 8 kind of thing that puts their marriage in jeopardy? Hmm. I wonder.
i agree that Rebecca should have been right there kicking Justin’s ass into gear!!
