AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW Goes Britney Spears on Us
January 30, 2009 by Kath Skerry
This week’s edition of AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW was all about Britney…Ms. Spears if you’re nasty. Each of the crews was given a classic Britney tune to choreograph against with the added twist of having to integrate a signature Britney move featured in her videos. It’s Britney, bitch.
Unlike last week when I thought all the crews really brought something special, this week I was only overly impressed by two crews: The Beat Freaks and Quest Crew.
The Beat Freaks, one of two all female crews, really pushed themselves to create a sexy routine that completely nailed the Britney challenge. To date The Beat Freaks have been known as tough and grimy B-Girls (a welcome change from other all girl crews of the past who have appeared more cheerleading squad than serious dance crew), but this week the ladies femm’d it up and put together a performance that was as tight as it was entertaining. The Beat Freaks were my favorite crew of the week.
Are you shocked that my boys of Quest Crew didn’t rank on top for me this week? Don’t be…they were a VERY close second. These guys are crazy! Their additional challenge this week was to perform blindfolded…what?! They could have easily accomplished their task by simply dancing with the blindfolds for a few seconds and be done with it, but nope…the Quest Crew, being amazing as usual, performed intricate tricks and crazy moves all without seeing. With their choreography, tricks and musicality, I really can’t see anther crew that can beat them in the end. I think these guys have owned it since day one. Am I being biased?

Like I said, the other crews just didn’t do it for me this week. Dynamic Edition looked unprofessional and like they were trying too hard. And Shane’s comments about being reminded of the movie “White Chicks” was spot on. Team Millennia (who performed their last routine before being outed), worked the stage with canes and fedoras, but other than a few moments here and there I wasn’t all that impressed. Strikers All Stars were my favorite crew last week, but their mirror image routine didn’t hit home for me. It was lacking a certain finesse – it was just too hard. The Fly Khicks continue to leave me unimpressed. I’m ready for them to go. They just aren’t good enough. And while I found the broken bone moves of The Ringmasters cool to look at the first two weeks, I prefer more dancing out my crew. Their visuals last night were entertaining and their interpretation of the music was right on, but in general it wasn’t enough for me.
What was your favorite Britney number of the night? Do you have a favorite crew yet?

While Quest are good, if there was one crew that was going to beat them it would be Strikers All Stars. I know everyone is a little biased regarding Quest we know them from SYTYCD but mark my words if Quest doesn’t than Strikers All Stars will.
I am def biased towards Quest. No doubt about that. But I also still think they are the crew to beat. I loved Strikers All Stars last week, but their first week I thought was lacking. And last night, while they were good, I didn’t think they were great. I can’t wait to see how the different crews take on next week’s challenge. I think last night was the last for Dynamic Edition.
I agree, Dynamic Edition has got to go. I cringe when the judges critique them because I know it’s not going to be pretty. I’m also over Ringmasters. I’m more a fan of the choreography-based groups. I’ll have to rewatch the show, but wasn’t Ringmasters’ challenge to create one large ‘person’ using all of group members? That’s not really what they did (although i could be wrong about what the actual challenge was).
Biased or not I LOVE Quest. How can you not? They are amazing!
It doesn’t hurt that I <3 Hok & Dom so 😉
The Beat Freaks are pretty great too. By far the best all girl crew ever and way better than many of the all guy groups!
This was my first week watching since Season 1. My favorite thing about this episode was the fact that they are finally keeping Mario Lopez’s awkward comments to a minimum (my annoyance of him is what had me stop watching in the first place). I tuned in again to see Quest and was not disappointed. I like that they are integrating Crews from other backgrounds, such as clogging, but surely there have got to be ones out there who can translate their skills into this competition a bit better! Dynamic Edition creeped me out with that hair and those smiles, and I’m so over the Fly Khicks.
I freely admit that I am TOTALLY biased towards Quest – my love of Dom knows no bounds. However, this season the crews seem to be either awesome or terrible to me. I love Quest, Beat Freaks, and Strikers, and I hate Ringmasters (I find the bone-crushing unwatchable, and that’s basically all they can do), Fly Khicks (still cheerleading, pelvic thrusts and all) and Dynamic Edition (it was cute for awhile, but now I’m bored). I thought Millennia deserved to stick around another week – they were tighter and sharper than Ringmasters and their choreo was WAY better. Not that it would have mattered, though, because they’d have been booted soon anyway. But at least it would have spared me cringing through another bone-crusher routine.
