TV is plentiful tonight, but can anything stand up to the force that is IDOL? AMERICAN IDOL showed some vulnerability last season. Will it remain on top? Sound off below! And tell me…what will YOU be watching?
American Idol | 8pm on Fox | Season Premiere
The audition process begins, as hopefuls around the country line up for the chance to perform for the judges and advance to the Hollywood Round. [GMMR: This one kind of snuck up on me. I knew IDOL was premiering soon, but I didn’t realize it was tonight. Woo to the Hoo!! I’ll watch over the next few weeks, but I prefer the good singers rather than the freak shows that show up every year.]
Privileged | 9pm on The CW
“All About What Lies Beneath”
Megan tries to find out why Lily is in jail; Shelby secretly meets with Will; Rose and Sage pick out an expensive gift for Luis. [GMMR: I’m sad that of all the shows out there, this one has to go up against IDOL. Don’t take it personally Megan, no one can resist The Cowell.]
Scrubs | 9pm on ABC
“My Saving Grace”
Dr. Kelso and Dr. Cox try to oust Dr. Maddox (Courteney Cox) from Sacred Heart; Carla decides to take a self-centered, incompetent intern down a notch. [GMMR: It kind of feels like ABC is just trying to burn off SCRUBS. Two episodes every Tuesday? Seems a little sketch to me.]
The Mentalist | 9pm on CBS
“Red Rum”
Patrick Jane sets a mentalist trap to find out who is responsible for the murder of a high-school boy who antagonized the local self-proclaimed witch.
Nip/Tuck | 10m on FX
“Gene Shelly”
Christian and Liz grow closer when she cares for him after his chemotherapy makes him ill; Sean reconnects with his broken family.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit | 10pm on NBC
“Hothouse”
When the body of a 14-year-old girl is found in the Hudson River, Benson and Stabler think she was smuggled into the country by sex traffickers; in an attempt to identify her, Benson poses as a madam.[GMMR:Best wishes to Mariska Hargitay who is in the hospital with a collapsed lung. Get well soon.]
Primetime: What Would You Do? | 10pm on ABC
Hidden cameras capture people’s reactions to a man slipping a suspicious powder into his date’s drink, a man stealing gas, and customers in a supermarket’s express check-out line with an overflowing shopping cart. [GMMR: Wait, didn’t they do the suspicious powder last week?]
Also playing…
- 90210 | 8pm on The CW: Tabitha surprises Dixon and Annie with a new car; Ethan and Annie sneak off to Tabitha’s house in Palm Springs for some time alone; Adrianna tells Naomi about her secret.
- The Biggest Loser | 8pm on NBC: The contestants face a challenge that forces them to question the real reason they’ve come to the ranch; an outdoor challenge has the contestants racing by sea kayak, and then on foot to the top of a mountain.
- Homeland Security USA | 8pm on ABC: Officers question a man in Tennessee who has a human skull and two undeclared handguns in his van; a highly intoxicated woman in Detroit poses a dilemma for officers.
- NCIS | 8pm on CBS: After Ducky is stabbed at a crime scene, the team uncovers disturbing secrets from the doctor’s past. [GMMR: Wait, there is a character named Ducky?! Love it!]
- Scrubs | 9:30pm on ABC: New sparks of an old romance are ignited between Elliot and J.D. when they work together to encourage Dr. Kelso to find a new happy place
- Without a Trace | 10pm on CBS: The team searches for a bar owner who has a religious statue that is believed to create miracles.
- Leverage | 10pm on TNT: The team pose as wedding planners to get close to a Mafia boss and must pull off a wedding while pulling off the heist.
GMMR’s Useless Tidbit of the Day…

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: Connect! Connect!

Tonight’s Desperate Housewives was all new and full of ungrateful and disrespecting children. Or at least it seemed that way to me. We also saw the conclusion of the Porter storyline, some out of character moments, and Edie and Dave reconciling. All this is leading up to next week’s one-hundredth episode.
Carlos has gone back to work and the girls are out of control. When I said above that this episode was full of ungrateful children I was mostly referring to Juanita and Celia. In my opinion they’re two of the most badly behaved children on TV. It actually got to the point where it was annoying to even watch them on the TV. The entire storyline feels old as well. It seems like Tom and Lynette have had a similar storyline before. There’s really no need to recycle storylines when Gabby is such a dynamic character.
24 Debrief: Day 7 | 8am-10am

Finally, a new season of 24. I hope it lived up to everyone’s expectations. It’s been a long time coming. Missed the episode? Want to break it down with other 24 fans? Well you’ve come to the right place. Agent Philboy will be providing a weekly debriefing of the activities of Jack Bauer and his associates, his assessment on the events that transpired and other pertinent information you’ll need to stay on top of the actions.
Check out Agent Philboy’s first weekly 24 report.
Debriefing…
Chronicling the latest activities of the good guys and the bad ones too.
- Our favorite former CTU agent Jack Bauer is on trial for war crimes. He is close to being indicted.
- Tony Almeida is still alive and is leading a group of domestic terrorists who are stealing in technology that gives them the capability to control airliners, as well as the power and water supplies for the entire country. Whatever group Tony is a part of is selling the module that does this to Gen. Juma, the genocidal dictator of Sangala.
- President Allison Taylor is well on her way to invading Sangala.
- The First Gentleman, Henry Taylor, isn’t accepting the idea that his son killed himself. Plus, he might be a little bit crazy, at least his seemingly pre-pubescent Secret Service Agent seems to think so.
- Jack has been enlisted to help find Tony by FBI Agent Renee Walker, who has immediately become his subordinate, as soon as Jack figured out that there is a leak within the FBI.
Agent Philboy’s Assessment…
What an awesome way to open a new season of “24.” It didn’t have a lot of the flash that previous seasons have started out with. No jugular veins were bitten. No nuclear bombs went off. But maybe that’s just what the show needed to get back on track. Perhaps, in year’s past, they kind of went too far and too big too soon, leaving the rest of the season just as time for disappointment.

The Best of Neil Patrick Harris on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
January 11, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, How I Met Your Mother, Neil Patrick Harris, Saturday Night Live, SNL, TV News
My love for all things Neil Patrick Harris have been well documented here on this site. But after last night’s hosting gig of SNL, my love has only grown. I had not doubt that Neil was going to be fantastic, but he so committed to each and every skit that he really stood out as one of the best hosts in quite some time.
I was surprised that with the exception of the brief ‘Seasons of Love’ chorus, Neil didn’t sing. Missed opportunity. Oh well, next time. And I am 100% certain there will be a next time.
Here are a few of my favorite skits from last night…
Neil Patrick Harris Saves Broadway
My inner theater geeked absolutely loved this skit featuring some of Broadway’s biggest stars trying to save the Great White Way. Neil as RENT’s Mark was great. I wish I had seen NPH when he played that role on Broadway.

So Crusoe and Susannah are finally reunited…or are they?
Crusoe wakes up to find Susannah standing over him and he’s happy to finally see her again, but instead of just enjoying the moment, he’s just in a hurry to return to shore so they can leave before the tides change. When he tries to find Friday so he can leave with them, he discovers that Friday is missing, his tree house is a wreck, and he has no idea how any of it happened. As he heads back to shore to find Friday, Susannah helps him remember the events leading up to her appearance. Through a series of flashbacks, Crusoe remembers that he and Friday had discovered a quartz-filled cave. While they were in the cave, they found the letter “N” inscribed on the wall which stood for Nugent, the captain of the ill-fated ship that wrecked and brought Crusoe to the island. Then Crusoe finally remembers that he and Friday are not alone on the island — Nugent had survived the shipwreck and had used a smoke bomb to smoke them out of their tree house.

A little late on the TV spotlight list today. Sorry. I went out last night and I’m paying the consequences this morning. Kids, take my advice…don’t get old.
A great night for TV. 24 fans are excited for their show to come back. I’m excited for the Golden Globes. And ok, I’ll admit it. I’m intrigued to see if John Krasinski will bring Emily Blunt as his date. Wait, is she nominated for anything this year? Maybe she will be bringing him as her date. Go Emily!
The Golden Globe Awards | 8pm on NBC
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors achievement in film and television; Steven Spielberg receives the Cecil B. DeMille Award. [GMMR: The live chat starts at 8pm, or maybe a little earlier. If you guys want to chat during E!’s red carpet show you’re going to have to tell me.]
24 | 8pm on Fox | Season Premiere
Day 7:8-10am
Jack’s morning takes a shocking turn when it is discovered that Tony Almeida is responsible for a terrifying threat. [GMMR: It’s been a long time 24 fans. Are you ready for another season? I still can’t believe that this is only Day 7 for Jack Bauer and company. Those are seven very full days.]
Desperate Housewives | 9pm on ABC
“Connect! Connect!”
Susan and Edie accidentally lock themselves in a basement; the search for Porter leads Lynette to her mother; Mike and Katherine define their relationship; Dave gets closer to exacting revenge. [GMMR: Maybe if they brought back Nathan Fillion I might start watching this show again. Ok, I’m lying. Why can’t I get into it?]
Brothers & Sisters | 10pm on ABC
“Sibling Rivalry”
Kitty promotes her tell-all book; Sarah runs into serious financial trouble; Tommy and Saul try to push Holly out of the family business. [GMMR: Tommy is running someone out of the family business? How about the irony in that?! Hitting a little close to home Balthazar? P.S. I always for get that Tommy and Saul were on ALIAS together..bizarre.]
The Unit | 10pm on CBS
“The Spear of Destiny”
Jonas and seriously wounded Mack take refuge in a monastery where Jonas is ordered to steal the monks’ most-prized possession. [GMMR: Speaking of ALIAS, Jennifer Garner’s first husband is too cute for words. Why do you think I keep promoting THE UNIT here. It’s not like I watch it.]
What will YOU be watching tonight?
