SMALVILLE: Requiem

February 9, 2009 by

Hey GMMRers! It’s that time again for another recap of our beloved Smallville. Before I plunge into the highlights – the CW has announced a change in their schedule. Smallville will be taking a break and after the episode this past Thursday they won’t be returning until March 5th. Yes another hiatus. So off to this week’s highlights of Smallville’s episode titled Requiem. This week’s storyline featured DC comic’s villain, the Toyman, played by Chris Gauthier. This is also Kristen Kreuk’s last appearance on Smallville.

In this week’s episode the Luthor Corp board all die after Lex recruits the Toyman to do his bidding. Unfortunately for Lex, Tess is on a trip and Oliver manages to walk away. Cutting their bed breaking sessions short Clark and Lana fly in to investigate who’s behind the explosion after Chloe gives them the news.

During their look around what’s left of the boardroom at Luthor Corp Lana learns that she has the capability to absorb Kryptonite. They also discover a chip that belongs to Queen Industries. Oliver is up to something and Clark and Lana plan to uncover what he’s hiding.

Meanwhile The Toyman is plotting another revenge scheme that involves blowing up the Daily Planet now that he has failed to kill his two targets. Oliver has previous interactions with the Toyman who is really Oliver’s former employee that loves to put bombs in toys. Oliver asks Chloe to do some investigating of her own without Clark’s knowledge. Oliver wants to finish off Lex without Clark getting in the way.

While working for Oliver Chloe is interrupted by Clark who suspects Chloe’s up to no good. She’s chasing down the lead on the bomber for Oliver and Clark wants her to stop. Chloe just wants to protect Clark and is angry that he has yet to take care of Lex. He’s a monster and they need to get rid of him – the problem is Superman isn’t a killer. Chloe gives in and gives Clark the Toyman’s real name, Winslow Schott. Clark promises to be careful and takes the info.

When he gets back to the farm Lana has some bad news for him. The suit that Lex built is possibly the weapon he needed to destroy Clark. Now that Lana’s wearing it and it absorbs Kryptonite there is sure to be some problems. Sticking with his usual optimistic demeanor Clark reminds her that she is the one wearing the suit and that they’ll figure it out. In the end though Lex figures it out for them in the most heartless move yet. The super villain sets up a huge bomb on the Daily Planet rooftop and the only person capable of saving thousands of people is Lana. Of course she has to absorb so much kryptonite that it will be impossible for Clark to come within two feet of her.

After finding no way out of the situation Lana tells Clark she has to leave. She’s just not as strong as him. A genius episode but another sad ending for Clark and Lana as well as the Green Arrow. Oliver thinks he finally got his man but since we all know there’s no way this DC villain can obviously be killed off yet he’s in for a big surprise when Lex is sure to resurface again.

What did you think about the ending? Was it not a sad way to see Lana go? How long will it be before Clark returns to normal?

Smallville’s next episode airs on March 5th with guest star Tori Spelling.

Sarah is from Massachusetts and currently writes for several TV and music websites. She loves Smallville, Heroes, Everwood, and of course Californication
