BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Recap: Deadlock

The final five Cylons were reunited last night as Ellen returned to Galactica.  She and Tigh wasted no time in getting reacquainted in the most intimate of ways.  Glad to know there wasn’t any lingering resentment…you know, since Tigh killed Ellen and all.  But when Ellen learned of her husband’s affair with Caprica, the most dangerous of all human emotions – jealousy – reared its ugly head and contributed, in part, to the death of a new generation of Cylons.

Who knew a cranky old man with one eye could be such a stud?

Last week Ellen spoke of wisdom and enlightenment and the virtue of the human emotions that she instilled within the Cylons she created. This week she was led by those emotions and used them to manipulate situations to her advantage. The question of whether or not the final five should abandon the fleet is dividing the Cylons. Since Cylons invented majority rule (seriously, are they just going to claim everything?), a vote was taken and they decided to leave.  Tigh wasn’t having it and refused to leave Galactica.  Ellen accused him of loving Bill Adama more than he ever loved her…or Caprica.  She antagonized Caprica and diminished Tigh’s love for her until Caprica collapsed. If the first Cylon child was conceived from true love than it was inevitable that the baby could not live if that love was diminished in any way. The minute Ellen returned that love was tested. And despite Ellen’s backtracking and pleading that Tigh really did love Caprica and that the humans and Cylons should remain together it was too late.  The damage was done. Little baby Liam was gone and with it a new kind of Cylon life.

AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW: Boys vs. Girls

February 20, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, America's Best Dance Crew

During last night’s AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW the four remaining crews went head to head in a battle of the sexes. For the first time ever ABDC featured two all girl groups in the final four. The Best Freaks and The Fly Khicks have done the ladies proud all season long and now they are up against the two toughest all guy crews – Quest Crew and Strikers All Stars.

For the first time this season we got an opening routine featuring all four crews, and let me tell you…it was all kinds of kick ass. You have to love a number with full audience participation. I’ve searched around and haven’t been able to find the video to post. But if you get to see it in a repeat showing of the episode I think you’ll really dig it.

Last night’s challenge had the crews emulating the music videos of some of the top guy and gal superstars in the game today. Personally I think it was in poor taste for MTV to have crews representing both Chris Brown and Rhianna. There is so much sensativity around both those artists right now that the powers that be at MTV had to be making a conscious decision when picking these videos. I thought it was lousy, but what else is there to say. This is from the same network that is exploiting the Chris Brown/Rhianna situation so much that they are having a special documentary about thier relationship. Shame on you MTV.

Excuse me while I jump down off my soap box. Now let’s get to the dancing.

Conan Bids Adieu to LATE NIGHT but not Late Night

February 20, 2009 by

After 16 years Conan O’Brien is saying goodbye to LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIEN but not to late night.  The Brookline, MA native (sorry had to get that in there) will be taking over the reigns for Jay Leno as the host of THE TONIGHT SHOW.

Unless there’s a particular guest I’m interested in seeing, I’ve never been one to stay up and watch the late night talk shows.  That being said, when I’m lucky enough to stumble on to CONAN I always have a good laugh.

I just wanted to put up a quick post to remind you all to set your DVR for tonight as it’s Conan’s last show as the host of LATE NIGHT.  Conan will take over as host of THE TONIGHT SHOW on June 1st.  Jimmy Fallon will take over for Conan as the host of LATE NIGHT on March 2nd.  Got it?

Here’s a great blooper reel that Conan aired two days ago that was pretty damn funny.  Enjoy! And be sure to tune in tonight.

Any favorite LATE NIGHT memories that really stand out?

BONES: The Princess and the Pear

Chivalry is not dead; it just hurt its back a little, that’s all.

Well, there are no more BONES episodes for three more weeks, so we’ve got to make this review count! I want some great comments from all over the world! I know you’re reading, so let me know what you think. And let us know where you’re watching from, too.

Anyways…I’ve got some questions for you. But first of all, before any rumors get started that David Boreanaz is backing out of the show, do not worry. He just took it easy on the acting bit to prepare for the episode he directed. And as a total side bonus, we got to see Booth in his boxers and find out that he thinks the furniture feels friendly.

The Quest:
A ‘booth babe’ from Imagicon is found dead by some RPG-ing kiddos. She’s the part-time owner of a most coveted Arthurian sword, the official Excalibur prop from le Morte d’Arthur, and there are many who would kill for such a treasure. And when there are a lot of suspects, I’m happy.

Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Friday, February 20, 2009

I think we should all take a minutes and appreciate the current state of TV.  Yes TV has it’s problems (and you can blame Ben Silverman for most of them), but what I find so amazing is that every single night of the week you can find at least one, but usually two of three high quality, thoroughly entertaining shows.  With the exception of Saturday, there’s not an “off” night on TV.

Once upon a time the only new programming on Friday nights was a WWE match.  Now you’ve got two of the best scripted dramas on TV: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and BATTLESTAR; one of the smartest comedies in PSYCH; and potentially a break out hit in DOLLHOUSE, among others.  Appreciate it while you can.

FYI: I added in a video for each of the shows. Whether it’s a promo or a scene from tonight’s episode, they are all somewhat spoilerific so watch at your own risk. Let me know if you like this format or if you’d prefer just the straight lineup.

My DVR is set…is yours?

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles | 8pm on Fox
“Desert Cantos”
The Connors visit a town connected to the destroyed factory; Weaver sends a man into town in search of a survivor.

Friday Night Lights | 9pm on NBC
It Ain’t Easy Being J.D. McCoy”
The new quarterback, J.D. McCoy, becomes a victim of hazing; Matt and Julie get closer after spending some time together at the lake; a woman claims that Cash owes her child support.

Dollhouse | 9pm on Fox
“The Target”
Echo becomes the female counterpart to an outdoorsman; Agent Ballard is encouraged when he receives a clue to Echo’s true identity. [GMMR: All eyes on DOLLHOUSE tonight.  The newbie needs the ratings. But after last week’s somewhat disappointment showing and the mediocre fan and press reaction, I’m not sure there’s going to be an uptick in the numbers.]

Monk | 9pm on USA
Mr. Monk Fights City Hall”
When the parking garage where his wife was killed is set for demolition, Monk intervenes, but finds himself investigating the disappearance of a city official who is key to preserving the site.

Psych | 10pm on USA
An Evening with Mr. Yang
The famed Yin Yang serial killer, who disappeared years ago after eluding capture, returns with sights set on Shawn. [GMMR: Get in line, Yang.]

Battlestar Galactica | 10pm on Sci Fi
“Deadlock”

Ellen reunites with the “Final Five” Cylons; the rebel Cylons consider abandoning the Colonial fleet.

What will YOU be watching?

DAMAGES: New York Sucks

February 19, 2009 by

I promised that I would try to share my thoughts on last night’s episode of DAMAGES at some point today.  I didn’t say that they thoughts would be well written, coherent or worthy of your time.  Score one for the small print!

So last night we had a whole episode without Daniel Purcell and I have to say that I didn’t miss him all that much.  While I recognize William Hurt as a fine actor, I’ve felt that his presence this season has slowed down the pacing of show.  He has a very laid back way about him and doesn’t demand my attention like Ted Danson’s Arthur Frobisher.  Is the character or the way the actor chooses to play it, I don’t know, but I know it’s not working for me.

What did work for me was an episode was Ellen and Patty going head to head over Patty’s new best buddy Arthur Frobisher. That press conference scene in which Patty calls Arthur her friend turned my stomach.  My saving grace was my conviction that Arthur is using Patty just as much as she is using him.  She took everything from him and he’s out for revenge. I’ve said it before but it’s worthy of saying again – the twosome of Glenn Close and Ted Danson is brilliant.  Such a treat to watched them play against one another.

Why LOST Lost Me…and Can’t Find Me Again

February 19, 2009 by

“But it’s so good now!

“Seriously, though, it’s so much better now!”

“Last season sucked. I’ll admit. But, you should start watching again, man.”

These are the things I hear when I tell people that, last season, I stopped watching “Lost.” But, it’s also what people told me after I stopped watching “Heroes” and “Grey’s Anatomy” and a countless number of fan favorites that I too once loved dearly but then fell off of my radar. These shows, with “Lost” being the premiere example, became a chore to watch for me, not a pleasure like TV should be.

My remote is dead right now. So, in getting ready for my favorite new show of the season, “Life on Mars,” I turned ABC on a little early. I saw the last few minutes of “Lost”. People were on a plane and then Kate was almost dead or something like that. I had no idea what was going on. And, then I realized…it was the same feeling I had when I was watching “Lost” every week; when I was following all of the viral websites and fan forums; when I was discussing it with all of my friends and trying to get people who were saying the same things I am now, to convert. I had absolutely no clue what was happening.

Now, before you freak out in the comments below, I know….Not watching the show for awhile is bound to get anyone…well…lost. But the feeling was the same. Total confusion. What I realized was that I was happy that I didn’t spend the hour to get to that point of confusion. And, then, as I watched “Life on Mars”, I truly realized what “Lost” was missing that keeps me watching similar shows.

I love a good mystery.

I would say that 80% of my weekly television shows are procedural crime dramas. We’re introduced to a case, the cops come in, they do their magic and the case is solved by the end of the hour. This isn’t to say I don’t love shows that are outside of the box. I mean, the two shows I write about for GMMR are “24” and “Dexter.” So, at the beginning, “Lost” was great. It was the ultimate mystery! You are dumped in the middle of the situation, along with all of the castaways, not knowing where you are, who you’re there with, or, most importantly to the show, why you’re there.

TOP CHEF Now Being Served

February 19, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, Posts by SB, Top Chef

It wasn’t until yesterday that I realized that GMMR readers were such big fans of Bravo’s TOP CHEF! But with the comments that were flying around it was obvious that it’s a show we should be talking about here on the site.  I’ve seen the show and have always liked it, but it’s more of a show that I catch from time to time and as a result I’m not qualified to talk about it with any knowledge.  Lucky for all us, SB from Team GMMR is a huge fan.  Better late than never, SB is going to take on TOP CHEF duties for the rest of the season.

Over to you SB…

TOP CHEF! Big thanks to GMMR for adding it, even if we are at the end of the season. It’s never too late to join the party, I say! Just to give you a little background on where I’m coming from, I’m not a foodie at all, but I like the artistry and competition parts of the show, which I actually started watching because Billy, my boyfriend who can cook a mean chicken breast on the Foreman grill and not much else, became obsessed with the show out of the blue. He does like to eat, though, and he thinks Padma is the hottest thing on two legs, which just goes to show that men DO only think about food and sex. Thankfully, Top Chef is so entertaining that I can indulge him on this one.

So it’s Part One of the finale, and my first thoughts are … CARLA! Why did you do that to your hair?!?! And FABIO! Why did you do that to your hair?!?! But they don’t leave me a lot of time to think about it before jumping right into the Quickfire Challenge, where none of the final four would be participating. Instead, they brought back Leah, Jeff, and Jamie for another shot at the finale.

Now I will say that I hated Leah (or GonnoLeah, as she is known at my apartment) because she was so damn whiny all the time. I couldn’t believe that she stuck around as long as she did, and I think Tom Colicchio hated her almost as much as I did. And she’s one of those girls who obviously thinks she’s prettier than she is and that that should get her through life. I’m sure she’s a decent chef and she certainly wasn’t the worst, but my personal hypothesis is that the producers angled for her to stay until they were sure they’d milked the HO-sea (as he’s known in my apartment) drama for all it was worth.

LOST: 316

Zoinks…we’re not in Kansas anymore, and no Frank – we’re not going to Guam.

In another mind-bending, WTF’esque episode of LOST some of the Oceanic 6 make it back to the island, while the fate of others (little “o”) are still unknown. There was a crash. A dead body. A bloody Ben, and Kate left Aaron on the side of the road. What? She won’t tell us what happened with him so I’m drawing my own conclusions.

Last night’s episode was a trip (no pun intended). The old gang coming together to recreate the most horrific event of their life…awesome! Of course some of it, ok most of it…hell ALL of it was off the charts ridiculous. I think the writers are creeping a little too close to a fine line they shouldn’t cross, but at this point I’m in. I’m along for the ride, so I say bring it on.

There are so many other sites better to recap and properly review LOST. Me? I watch and just hope I understand half of what I’m seeing. Despite the major questions we were left with, a lot of other big mysteries were answered last night. Namely, how does one get back to the island?

Mistress of the Dark, Eloise Hawkings, brought Ben, Sun and Jack into the bowels of the church and into a Dharma station – The Lamp Post. This special room was built on top an electromagnetic pocket, which with the help of a giant pendulum and a big old floor map, helps predicts where and when the island is at any given point in time. Dharma scientists have developed equations and theories to help determine the short periods of time during which the island would be visible and accessible.

You with me?

I can’t believe I am going to type this, but…I’m excited about GREY’S ANATOMY & PRIVATE PRACTICE tonight.  There I said it.  Whew.  That wasn’t easy.  But it’s true.  After last week’s crossover episode, which I personally really enjoyed, I’m ready for the crossover conclusion.  Let’s face it, after this week both shows are going to return to their mediocre selves so I’m going enjoy it while it lasts.

With THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK in reruns this week, I’m actually going to go out with my friends for dinner without stressing about how late I’m going to have to stay up to play TV catch up.  It’s going to be nice.

Ask and You (Might) Receive….
There’s still a lot going on tonight.  Anything you’re especially interested in?  I know I ask everyday but I really want to know.  Hearing from you sometimes helps me decide which shows we should be covering here on GMMR.  For instance, I learned form yesterday’s TV Spotlight that there were a lot of TOP CHEF fans here on GMMR.  As a result we are going to have SB provide reviews for the last few episodes of this season.  So make sure you pipe up.  I don’t list all the shows in the Spotlight post, but if there are other shows you are watching that are not listed here I’m up for hearing about those too.

Bones| 8pm on Fox
“The Princess and the Pear”
The team investigates at a fantasy convention when a female science fiction enthusiast is found murdered.

Survivor: Tocantins | 8pm on CBS
“The Poison Apple Needs to Go”

A twist allows the castaways to play the game like never before; a quest for a hidden immunity idol leaves two castaways in a tight spot.  [GMMR:Erik covered SURVIVOR for us last season, but there didn’t seem much of an appetite for it here on GMMR.  If I hear an outcry of love for the show I’ll try to work something out. ]

Ugly Betty | 8pm on ABC
“There’s No Place Like Mode”
Betty must cope with putting on a show for a bizarre new designer and with an assignment from YETI; Wilhelmina fears that she’s lost her edge; Daniel tries to give Molly a makeover.. [GMMR: Note to whoever writes the ep descriptions for UGLY BETTY – if you mention Marc and/or Amanda in the description there’s a 68.4% increase in the likelihood that I’ll watch.]

Grey’s Anatomy | 9pm on ABC
“An Honest Mistake”
Derek and Addison face off as they try to save a pregnant patient’s life; a surgeon botches a standard procedure; Bailey is shocked by the chief’s recommendation letter.

Private Practice | 10pm on ABC
“Wait & See”
Addison suspects that Archer is up to his old tricks; a patient’s child is born with male and female reproductive organs; Violet and Sheldon co-lead a therapy group for couples.

America’s Best Dance Crew | 10pm on MTV
It’s a battle of the sexes when the two remaining all guy groups (Quest Crew and Strikers All Stars) take on the final two all girl groups (Beat Freaks and Fly Khicks). After tonight’s performances another crew will be sent home. [GMMR: Please let it be the Fly Khicks.]

Burn Notice | 10pm on USA
“Truth and Reconciliaiton

Michael takes on a sympathy case for a Haitian man whose daughter was murdered by a corrupt government official he believes is hiding in Miami; Michael gets closer to tracking down the person who tried to kill him.

ER | 10pm on NBC
“The Beginning of the End
Banfield is determined to have a baby; Neela gives a girl good news about her mother’s surgery; Dr. Carter makes a surprise visit to the ER. [GMMR: Anyone excited for the return of Noah Wyle tonight?  I might tune in to see what’s been going on with Dr. Carter.]

VIDEO: Noah reflects on his rolodex of memories from his 11 years on the show.

Also playing…

  • My Name is Earl | 8:30pm on NBC: Earl and Randy smell trouble when Darnell’s father (Danny Glover) comes to Camden claiming he wants to make amends with his son.
  • Kath & Kim | 8:30pm on NBC: Kath searches for her ex, Rusty, after discovering they are still married; Kim falls in love with roller derby.
  • CSI | 9pm on CBS: New evidence prompts the CSI team to reopen the investigation, as Langston testifies at the trial of a respected congressman.
  • Eleventh Hour | 10pm on CBS: A perfectly healthy helicopter pilot is mysteriously struck blind during his live TV traffic report, resulting in a terrible crash.

Lots and lots to choose from. What will YOU be watching?

Who Made it Through on AMERICAN IDOL?

March 5, 2009: Want to know who made it through from the Wild Card roung?  Click here to find out: Who Made It Through on AMERICAN IDOL?

PREVIOUS POST:

No one can waste time like AMERICAN IDOL. An hour of filler to announce the three contestants moving on to the Top 12. Lucky for all of us they used that time wisely and gave us a over the top, cheesy, poorly performed dance number.  Awesome.  I have to wonder if they IDOL producers ever watch the shows.  Don’t they know how bad it looks? Yikes.

After much yammering Seacrest finally gets around to bringing the contestants down to the main stage.  For three of them tonight is about moving one step closer to the dream. For the other nine it’s the end of the road…well, at least this particular road.

To mix things up a bit (and by that I mean to waste time), half way through the results we were treated to an encore performance of “The Letter” by former Top 12ers Carly Smithson & Michael Johns.  Both are fantastic and should have gone further in their seasons. All due respect to David Archuleta, I think the finals should have been Cook vs. Johns. [GMMR ducks and hides as the Archie fans pelt her with tomatoes.]

The first three contestants through to the Top 12 of Season 8 are…

Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Wednesday, February 18, 2009

February 18, 2009 by
Filed under Tonight's TV Spotlight, TV News

I’ve got my game hat on and I’m ready for Wednesday night TV. Are you?  It’s going to be a late night tonight…I’m talking really late as I have to get through LOST, AMERICAN IDOL and DAMAGES. I promise I will do my very best to get reviews of each of these shows up as soon as possible either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Housekeeping…
Once again thanks to everyone for their participation in the GMMR survey (click here to take the GiveMeMyRemote.com survey). If you haven’t already done so, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts.

As I said yesterday, there will be some changes as a result of what I’m hearing.  Based on the feedback I’m thinking about ditching the home page all together.  I thought it was a nice entry into GMMR for new users, but there seems to be all kinds of confusion between the stuff on the home page and what people will find on the BLOG page (hint: it’s all the same stuff). Still debating that one – it took me a long time to get it live and will take me more time again to switch it around again. With a packed TV schedule, a full time job, sleep and trying to have some semblance of a life, there’s only so much time in the day.  Ha ha!  Someone cue the violins!

But enough about that, let’s talk about some of the highlights from tonight’s TV lineup, shall we?

American Idol | 8pm on Fox
Results from last night’s auditions. The top guy and girl and whomever is next in line with the most votes moves on to the Top 12. [GMMR: Did you watch?  Did you vote for your top girl & guy in the GMMR IDOL poll?  Go for it.]

Lost | 9pm on ABC
“316”
The way back to the island is revealed to members of the Oceanic 6, but there’s trouble ahead when not all of them wish to return.[GMMR: I’m going to attempt to write up my thoughts on LOST tonight so we can talk about it in the morning. Sorry that I let it get away from me last week. I’m so excited for another episode.  Looks like the Oceanic 6 are getting closer and closer to the island.  Reunited and it feels so good.]

Life | 9pm on NBC
“I Heart Mom”

A man is found beaten and shot dead with a mouth full of money in a house with no roof. Crews and Reese begin their investigation and discover the victim was running an elaborate construction scam that left his clients without roofs or money.

Damages | 10pm on FX
New York Sucks
As new tension develops between Ellen and Patty over how to proceed in the case against Ultima National Resources, Ellen provides the FBI with a new lead to bring Patty down. [GMMR: Based on the survey feedback received so far it seems that more people are watching DAMAGES than I thought. I’ll do my best to share my thoughts tonight. ]

Life on Mars | 10pm on ABC
Home is Where You Hang Your Holster
A councilman caught with a hooker in a police raid on a motel reveals a shocking secret to Sam. Meanwhile, a chaotic shooting breaks out at the precinct.

Also playing…

  • The New Adventures of Old Christine | 8pm on CBS: Christine is initially flattered when another scatterbrained mother at Ritchie’s school considers her a “rock,” but quickly tires of the responsibility of being responsible.
  • Gary Unmarried | 8:30pm on CBS: Gary faces an audit from the IRS and reluctantly takes financial advice from Allison s brother to address the issue.
  • Criminal Minds | 9pm on CBS: The team pursues a copycat murderer who is duplicating the methods of infamous serial killers.
  • Law & Order | 10pm on NBC: A Web site operator s death leads Lupo and Bernard to investigate a Christian subculture.
  • CSI:NY | 10pm on CBS: When the Mayor’s dead body falls from the ceiling, along with hundreds of balloons, at a charity fundraiser, Stella and her date find themselves in the middle of the crime scene and Mac goes head to head with Robert Dunbrook.
  • Top Chef | 10pm on Bravo: The final four chefs pull out all the stops in an effort to impress the judges before the finale.

May I ask…what will YOU be watching?

AMERICAN IDOL: Top 36 – Group One

Two hours of IDOL. I’m sweating just typing it. That’s a lot of IDOL for only 12 performances. That’s a lot of Randy, Paula, Kara, Simon and WAY too much Tatiana. (Not too much Seacrest though, because yeah…I’m still on that train).

I know some of you requested some live blogging of IDOL, and we’ll definitely do a few of those this season, but for now I need the beauty of watching it late so I can fast forward through the nonsense. You understand, right?

Per usual I’m going to be sharing my honest opinions of the contestants after each performance and then unpause the old remote to hear what the judges have to say. My years in glee club have qualified me for this very special position. Ears don’t fail me now. But remember, this is just my opinion, so I hope you’ll chime in with your take on each of the performers.

Here we go…

[30 seconds into Ryan’s “THIS is American Idol” intro and just the site of Tatiana is annoying me. I know, I know, get over it. But I can’t.]

[8:03pm: Paula is spewing nonsense. Simon & Ryan are already flirting. Yup, this is going to be a long night.]

Tonight’s theme? Hits from the Billboard Top 110…from when the charts began. That’s a lot of songs to choose from. Hope these kids chose right.

First up…Jackie Tohn is singing “A Little Less Conversation” by Elvis.
Ok first off, what in good God’s name is she wearing? I would love Barney Stinson to plot this chick on the HOT/CRAZY scale. Here’s the thing with Jackie – she can sing but her personality is so off putting that is ruins her performance for me. She wasn’t bad but she’s not one of my faves. It’s too early to see if she’d get my vote tonight but I’m leaning heavily towards No.

  • Judges: She didn’t blow Randy away with her vocals but he thought she performed well.  Kara’s all about praising the personality too. Paula thinks perfect is boring. And Simon – he thought she played the clown card tonight. He wasn’t a big fan. And the more Jackie keeps talking the more I hate her.

Ricky Braddy is up next.  I don’t remember much about this guy but I hear Paula’s been talking him up. He’s singing “A Song For You” – great song but why choose a song that has been done so many times on IDOL already? It just sets you up for comparison. Elliot Yamin killed this one in season 5.  This kid can sing.  Ricky voice is beautiful and he has an incredible range. I really like this guy a lot. Wow!

  • Judges: All the judges loved his voice. Paula, Kara and Randy were blown away.  Simon said while his voice was strong he didn’t yet have the charisma and confidence that is needed. Fair enough.
