Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Thursday, March 19, 2009

I know you’re probably still recovering from Wednesday night TV, but buck up little solider because it’s Thursday and things ain’t any easier today. It’s tough to be a TV fan sometimes, isn’t it. So much commitment. Oh the drama of it all.
Before we get to tonight’s programming, let’s close the loop on last night. Did you guys give BETTER OFF TED a shot? What did you think? Click here to share your thoughts on last night’s new comedy.
And what about last night’s AMERICAN IDOL shocker?! I didn’t see that one coming. What do YOU think about who got voted off IDOL last night?
My thoughts on LOST will be posted later today.
Ok enough about Wednesday, let’s move on to Thursday night TV. Any time there’s a new episode of THE OFFICE I figure it’s going to be a good day. And tonight we’ve got John Krasinski in a tux. Can you beat that?! No? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
March Madness begins tonight!! No, it’s not a count down to my birthday celebration on Saturday but rather some basketball tournament. I know it’s a big deal but unless Fairfield U is playing I think I’ll pass. Don’t laugh, it’s happened before. Go Stags!
And our President sits down with Jay Leno for an extended segment. It’s a big night.
Bones| 8pm on Fox

“The Sex Issue”
Marc and Amanda give Betty a sexy makeover; Hilda isn’t sure if she wants to keep dating Archie. [GMMR: Hilda, you can’t break up with Daniel. He gives a hell of a wax job, plus he knows how to paint a fence. He might come in handy. – That sounded way dirtier than original intended.]
The Office | 9pm on NBC
“The New Boss”
Michael makes big plans for his 15th anniversary party at Dunder Mifflin; Jim plays a prank on Dwight that has unexpected results. [GMMR: Why am I nervous that Jim is going to finally get busted big time for one of his pranks?]

Who Went Home on AMERICAN IDOL?

UPDATE: Looking to find who went home on IDOL? Click here for tonight’s shocking results: Who Went Home on AMERICAN IDOL? (March 11, 2010)
——————-
PREVIOUS POST:
Tonight we’re going from 11 to 10. This week’s elimination is especially tough because whomever gets sent home is going home for good while their fellow contestants will be enjoying the AI summer tour. Bummer.
Since it’s country night we’ll be treated to performances by Brad Paisely and a duet with Randy Travis & Carrie Underwood. Any chance we could just get Carrie and skip the others? What…I want to watch LOST.
9:00pm: Ryan has informed us that “THIS is American Idol”. Whew, I thought maybe we were watching TOP CHEF or DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.
9:05pm: Time for a recap of last night’s performances. Re: Danny’s performance – The funniest commentary of the day came from @HitFixDaniel who said via Twitter: “The song “Jesus Take the Wheel” irks me. Jesus lived in a time without cars. If he took the wheel, he’d probably crash.” Ha!
9:07pm: The Idols are lip syncing some God awful song. Not sure what they’re singing, but it might be the alphabet. I know I’m going straight to hell for asking, but what is Scott going to do if he makes it through tonight and goes on the IDOL tour? Won’t it be really difficult for him to learn and perform the cheesy choreography? I’m not saying he can’t do it, but it certainly poses a unique set of challenges.
[Commercial break: They showcase the audition of Kristin McNamara, one of the many, many contestants that could out sing Jasmine Murray. Way to go judges!]
9:12pm: This week’s Ford music video has the contestants throwing water balloons at each other. Who do you think was the biggest target – Danny or Adam?
9:16pm: Bring out the kleenex. Between the look at last week’s castoffs and Michael Sarver talking about how his kid doesn’t know why Daddy doesn’t love her anymore, it’s an emotional few minutes.
9:18pm: Let the auf wiedersehening begin.
THE BIG BANG THEORY Renewed for Two Years!

Nerds of the worlds rejoice! CBS has just announced that it’s picked up THE BIG BANG THEORY for two more seasons. This news thrills me to no end as I’m a big fan of Leonard, Howard, Raj, Penny and my boy Sheldon.
CBS has also renewed Chuck Lorre’s other series, TWO AND A HALF MEN for three more years.
“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. and Chuck Lorre for these two series has lead to great entertainment for television audiences and has been very good business for CBS,” said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler. “With these shows firmly in place, CBS is well-positioned for more comedy success in the years ahead.”
If you’re not watching THE BIG BANG THEORY I urge you to give it a shot. It wasn’t on my radar until about half way through the first season and now it’s one of my very favorite comedies on TV today. It’s appointment TV at its funniest.
I know the Monday night TV schedule is crowded, but try to schedule some time to catch up on Season 1 via iTunes. If you need some convincing, I’m sure some other BBT fans can chime in and share the love. I’ve received so many thank you emails from GMMR readers who tuned into the show after listening to me go on and on about it. Don’t miss out.
For now, I’ll let the cast of BBT talk nerdy to you.
More of my favorite THE BIG BANG THEORY moments after the jump.

If you have picked up a newspaper or watched a cable news broadcast lately, you may have seen a mention or two about our ailing economy. Since most of us are not Ivy League economists or full time financial professionals, we might be hard pressed to explain the reasons behind the credit crisis or the provisions of the stimulus package just signed into law. What we can do, however, is rely on our own experiences, as well as those of our friends and family, to illustrate the emotional toll that the recession is taking on American families and small businesses. Old habits are hard to break, and it can be taxing on the soul to concede that a daily trip to Starbucks or an investment in endless movie channels may have to be curbed in order to make ends meet. The reality of the times we are living in is falling far short of our expectations of how things ought to be.
This week, Dr. Taub became one of us, a person struggling to find satisfaction and purpose in a career path that has taken him from a life of vanity to one of simplicity, and from an ivory tower of control to a dunce cap of verbal abuse. Though the reasons for Taub’s decision to join House’s team were not scripted to reflect the news of our day, the journey that he took in this episode illuminated a fight that millions of us have to wake up to every morning.
You’ll Be Better Off For Watching BETTER OFF TED
March 18, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, Better Off Ted
With fickle audiences and scared networks execs, it seems that with every passing week a show is gone and another one is premiering in its place. With the risk of sounding a bit ambivalent, I’m not often surprised by new shows. So when I plopped down a few weeks ago to watch the series premiere of ABC’s new comedy BETTER OFF TED I wasn’t expecting much. I didn’t remember hearing anything about this show at the ABC Upfronts and there certainly wasn’t any buzz. My expectations were low. But I was bored. And then suddenly I wasn’t. Suddenly I was laughing my ass off at the antics of this workplace comedy. Quelle surprise!
I know it’s a bit of a cliche to simply compare new shows to old, but I’d be lying if I didn’t get an OFFICE meets ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT vibe while watching BETTER OFF TED. The workplace dynamic is even quirky than THE OFFICE, if you can imagine that, but the structure of the show has a similar sensibility to ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and it focuses on a man who is just much more in tune with reality than the ridiculous people he surrounds himself with. That and there’s Portia DeRossi.
The show’s lens is Ted – the head of the R&D division of the ethically challenged and morally corrupt Verdian Dynamics. This company takes the art of invention to a whole new level. With the unofficial company motto being “We can do that” nothing is off the table, no matter how bizarre. If you’re looking to transform pumpkins into weapons of mass destruction than you found the right company. How about cryogenically freezing one of your employees just to see if it works? Yup. The workers at Veridian Dynamics can find a use for just about anything and they thrive on making everyday items into something a bit more…unique.
(Here’s a sneak peek at tonight’s premiere episode)
Ted (Jay Harrington), a single father to Rose (Isabella Acres) a precocious and wise beyond her years seven year old, is starting to question some of the methods and tactics of Veridian Dynamics. But it’s hard to push back on his boss, Veronica (Portia DeRossi), who is the ultimate corporate yes man…or woman. The robotic’esque Veronica isn’t swayed by much and she’s all business all the time (except during her brief affair with Ted). She seems void of any emotion and calls it like she sees it.
Ted’s office affair with Veronica is holding him back from getting involved with co-worker, Linda (Andrea Anders), a slightly flaky but sweet girl who may not like her job as much as she leads on. Ted and Linda’s will they/won’t they will probably won’t last that long as these two definitely “will be” soon.
Rounding out the Veridian Dynamics team is Phil (Jonathan Slavin) and Lem (Malcolm Barrett), research scientists who fall slightly left of center but are deadly loyal to the company.
Jay Harrington is sweet, suave and funny and in the role of the show’s narrator and hero. Despite his role in the office antics, he lets us know that he sees the absurdity surrounding him. Portia DeRossi shines as Veronica. Her style is much more similar to her role as the buttoned up Nell Porter on ALLY McBEAL, but her ambivalence and aloofness may just remind you of Lindsey Bluth Funke.
I know ABC doesn’t have the best track record with 1/2 hour comedies, but I really hope you all give this show a shot. I think it’s one of the freshest comedies to come out in some time. Too bad it’s on ABC because this show would work perfectly nestled in between THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK on NBC.
Make sure you don’t miss BETTER OFF TED tonight at 8:30pm on ABC.

AMERICAN IDOL: Top 11 Perform

In the interest of full disclosure, I wasn’t feeling well last night and I went to bed early. So here I am on Wednesday morning at 5:02am, bleary eyed but watching. I’ll try by best to be enthusiastic and alert. Perhaps some of Adam Lambert’s screeching will wake me up.
It’s country night and the 11 remaining contestants will be singing hits from the Grand Old Opry. Helping them find their inner cowboy this week is Randy Travis.
Michael Sarver
Song: Ain’t Going Down Until The Sun Comes Up
My Take: Starting off tonight with a little Garth…not too bad. This one isn’t easy though. Fun song but I’m not sure it was the best song to show off the vocals as this tune is almost like a country version of rap. And what’s with the guy sitting on the stage playing the harmonica? Kind of creepy. Michael did an ok job with it. I felt like he was playing catch up with the lyrics the whole time. And did anyone else notice he hardly open his mouth when he sings. Bizarre.
The Judges: Randy and Kara thought that the song didn’t do enough to show off his vocals. Paula thought it was fun and the genre suited him well. Simon thought it was a bit clumsy.
Allison Iraheta
Song: Blame it on Your Heart
My Take: I keep forgetting that Allison is only 16 years old. She is so comfortable on the stage. While I thought she sang the song well, the melody didn’t do much for me as it was the same 3 or 4 notes the entire song. But she did well.
The Judges: Kara thought she was great. Paula actually gave some solid advice (shocking) suggesting that while Allison shouldn’t lose the rocker tone to her voice, she should explore different sides of her voice more. Simon thought it was good.
GOSSIP GIRL: Dear Writers..WTF?
March 17, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, Gossip Girl
Just got back to my desk and checked my inbox only to find a ton of people asking me about what I thought of last night’s GOSSIP GIRL. You really want to know what I thought? It was awful. Perhaps the worst episode of the series. And while next week’s ep is most definitely better, it’s not that great either.
What happened to the writers over this long hiatus? It’s like the fell asleep and lost all humor from their lives. GOSSIP GIRL may be a drama, but the beauty of the show is that it never takes itself seriously. I’m not sure what happened with last night’s episode but it was a big old mess. The play within the play. Dan having sex in the closet. The ridiculous director. The theater critic who couldn’t distinguish a total teen breakdown from actual art? Yikes. And don’t even get me started on the ridiculous “Eyes Wide Shut” plot line that they insist on dragging out with Chuck. Clearly the writers don’t listen to The TV Talk Podcast, or else they would have know to run quickly away from that silly secret club storyline.
I’m willing to forgive this week’s episode and next if the writers promise to pull it together. It’s the sharp wit and icy banter mixed with pretty people and fashionable clothes that make this show. Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking it’s something it’s not…it doesn’t hold up.
You asked.
As I said, next week’s episode is definitely an improvement. Nate finds himself ingratiated back into his family but not without consequence. Blair continues her downward spiral of depression over Yale. She seeks comfort in three different men, but only one seems to be getting the job done.
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: Sorry Bro & Front Porch

Everyone ready to talk about the whirlwind past two episodes of HIMYM? They both contained everything I personally need in my dosage of HIMYM (minus the Slap Bet slaps) to leave me completely satisfied: the past; the faux future; the core mythology; and each of the characters being their quintessential selves, who we love dearly.
“Sorry, Bro”
Starting off with last week’s episode we were introduced to Ted’s high school and some of college girlfriend Karen, portrayed by Laura Prepon. While Ted is trying to nonchalantly tell everyone what has happening with reconnecting with Karen, Robin was trying to catch up with the gang on her way to work and Barney was trying to get Marshall to tell Robin about the pants incident.
There were so many disruptions in the storytelling of the anecdotes due to everyone trying to talk all at once about that it was sort of hard to concentrate on which story you wanted to hear and who you were supposed to be listening to. But for me that worked. When you gather more than three people together at a time, not every one of them is involved in listening to the same story. Lily was occupied with listening to Ted talk about Karen, a vile being in the trio’s history, while Barney was more interested in hearing Marshall’s hilarious and embarrassing story.

This week we were in real real time (my apologies to Kath for giving her the wrong time for last week) as we got some much needed answers. Let’s get started before I get too excited about my trip to Portland tomorrow.
Oh, what’s that? You didn’t know I was going to Portland. Neither did I, until yesterday. I’ll be traveling with the No. 5 seed Purdue Men’s Basketball Team as part of the pep band. Hopefully, I’ll be gone until about Sunday, if we win both games. If anybody has some good suggestions for food or things to do in Portland, leave them in the comments. [GMMR: Congrats Philboy…GOOO Purdue!]
Debrief
- Jack breaks into a car that conveniently has a MacBook in it. He sends images off the hospital security camera to the newly-suspended Renee, who identifies the killer, Quinn, as a member of private security contractor Starkwood. Starkwood has been known for some shenanigans in the past but nothing having to do with Juma or Sangala. The best authority on Starkwood is none other but Senator Mayer, who is investigating them, along with Jack and half of the rest of the free world.
- Larry is a tool.
- After losing Jack, Larry goes back to FBI HQ and finds Morris O’Brien, Chloe’s husband (Remember her?!) who wants his wife released. He makes a deal to help them find Jack’s location in exchange for Chloe’s release. On a scale from one to divorce, Chloe is at about a seven.

CASTLE: Nanny McDead
March 17, 2009 by Philiana
Filed under #1 featured, Castle, Posts by Philiana
On paper, “Castle” has the ingredients of being the next big cop procedural hit. The characters are interesting, at least title character Richard Castle is, and the murders are, for the most part, interesting and unconventional. What works well for “Castle” on paper, however, doesn’t translate quite as strongly – as one would hope – to the small screen. That’s what happened in the series premiere last week when Castle (brilliantly played by Nathan Fillion) and his foil Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) were forced to color in between the lines and recite stale, cliché lines.
While Fillion displayed a knack for sinking into character (or is it the fact that Castle isn’t too far removed from the everyday Fillion?), Katic struggled to counter Castle’s egotistical charm and wit without seeming too stuck-up or devoid of all emotion. What didn’t help was the lack of consistency in the show’s tone that often went from light-hearted gaudiness to a heavy sense of deliberate profundity so as not to come off as a “trashy mystery charmer” as Castle and his books frankly are.
Fortunately, last night’s episode where a nanny is found inside a machine in the laundry room showed a vast improvement in the show’s tonal elements, character developments and even the way the murder mystery unfolded – with several twists and turns, some predictable and some not. By the end of the pilot, it is revealed that Castle will now be shadowing Beckett on all her cases as research for his next book. Now the ploy may be intentional (let’s be serious here, there was no way the show could have gone forward by focusing on murders that were taken out of Castle’s books nor could the police department employ him as a consultant without ample reason) to keep the story going, but it works, as predictable as it may be.

Top of the mornin’ to you. I hope you all have a very enjoyable St. Patrick’s Day. It seems a bit wasteful to have the holiday fall midweek. Guess that means I’ll have to drink at the office. It wouldn’t be the first time. I kid…kind of.
A pretty tame night of television…and that’s definitely NOT a complaint.
Here’s a little of what I’ll be watching…what about YOU?!
American Idol | 8pm on Fox
The remaining finalists perform songs popularized by members of the Grand Ole Opry; Randy Travis mentors the competitors. [GMMR: Country night? Already? How about giving us a few weeks before dropping the contestants into this often polarizing genre?]
Reaper | 8pm on The CW
“The Sweet Science”
Ben wants to introduce Nina to Sock and Sam; the devil tells Sam he must send a prizefighter from the 1950s back to hell. [GMMR: I haven’t heard much buzz about this show since it returned. Any fans out there want to chime in and let us know how it’s going?]
The Biggest Loser | 8pm on NBC
The contestants must continue to make healthy food choices and get their workouts done when they head home for a week; a cookie temptation adds a twist to the competition; a contestant is sent home.
The Mentalist | 9pm on CBS
“Bloodshot”
Patrick loses his sight in an explosion, forcing him to rely on his other senses to help him solve the murder of a financial adviser.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit | 10pm on NBC
“Lead”
While investigating a triple homicide, Benson and Stabler get assistance from a former dancer (Carol Burnett) who is now a strip-club owner, as well as from her nephew (Matthew Lillard). When the prime suspect dies, the focus shifts to a vigilante.
Also playing…
- Dancing with the Stars | 8pm on ABC: A performance recap of last night’s dances. Someone is eliminated.
- NCIS | 8pm on CBS: A boxer’s death leads to Vance starting his own investigation; Gibbs looks into Vance’s past.
- Without a Trace | 10pm on CBS: The team searches for a trial consultant who goes missing during a big civil case; Jack and Samantha adjust to Brian spending time with Finn.
- Trust Me | 10pm on TNT: Conner arranges some freelance work for a former partner; Sarah tries to bring in a high-profile beer account; Mason’s daughter is having boy troubles.
Lost to choose from. What will YOU be watching tonight?!
Josh Schwartz’s ROCKVILLE, CA Premieres Today on TheWB.com
March 17, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, Ryan Hansen
ROCKVILLE, CA premieres today at 9am est on www.TheWB.com. The new web series, from creator Josh Schwartz, centers around the music club, Rockville – think The O.C.’s Baitshop without the hot lesbian bartender – and those who frequent the hipster joint.
Each self-contained episode features a new band on the verge, hand picked by executive producer Alexandrea Patsavas. Whether you know it or not, Patsavas has been influencing our ears for quite some time now as music supervisor on shows such as THE OC, GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE, GOSSIP GIRL, CHUCK, MAD MEN and more. Her influence, which has always been in the background of a scene, is at the forefront of this series. If anything, I’d say it’s the characters that play second to the music, at least in the first six episodes.
ROCKVILLE, CA is offered in digestible four to six minute mini-bites. Perfect for our Twitter obsessed minds. Given the length of the installments there isn’t a lot of room for deep character development which is good because I’m not sure all of the actors are up for more than they’ve been given. Some of the actors seem to be trying just a bit too hard and there’s a certain lack of subtly to their performances. Ryan Hansen, who plays Chambers, is the biggest offender. It was borderline painful to see his overly broad portrayal of The Douche. It was especially tough as Hansen was one of the reasons I was most excited about this project when I first heard about it. But maybe I’m juding too harshly. The webisodic nature doesn’t really allow these actors to live with the characters for too long so maybe they just hadn’t found their groove yet. They have 20 episodes to work it out, so I guess we’ll see soon enough.
So who just are these cool cats who hang out at a club in the middle of the day? In the first six episodes we meet…

Comments Off on Name That Jaw Dropping LOST Moment
LOST season finales are known to include at least one ‘holy shiz’ moment. That one scene or event that has everyone chattering the next day (or if we are being honest, online just seconds after it happens). And this year will be no exception. But this time around YOU might be able to be part of LOST history…kind of.
According to TVGuide.com, in this week’s LOST podcast (which will be available on ABC.com on Thursday), Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof will invite LOST viewers to submit suggestions for what to name the “big moment” – it’s the obscure name that the producers, writers, actors and press have traditionally used so as not to give away any spoilers.
Per TVGuide.com “In seasons past, that head-scratcher has been dubbed “Bagel” (Walt is abducted by the Others!), “Challah” (Penny’s research team locates the island!), “The Rattlesnake in the Mailbox” (Jack is flashing forward!) and “Frozen Donkey Wheel” (which, quite literally, Ben rotated to move the island).”
What will it be this year? And will YOU be the one to name the moment and be part of LOST lore?
Leaver your suggestions here but also submit them officially ABC.com/asklost. The producers will announce the winner on the March 26th podcast.
