Save CHUCK: It’s Now or Never
April 20, 2009 by Kath Skerry

One of the toughest things about being without internet this week is not being able to post all the great posts, videos, and other creative ways people are trying to get the word out about CHUCK. Glad everyone is keeping up all the support…it’s important.
Ratings were up last week which is fantastic! But NBC hasn’t yet renewed the show so now is not the time to let up. CHUCK is back tonight with an all new episode and it looks incredible! Make sure you get those Twitter reminders out; update those Facebook pages; and get the rope ready to tie the indifferent down to a chair and make them watch. Ok, perhaps that’s going a bit too far but you get what I’m saying…make sure everyone is watching CHUCK tonight at 8pm on NBC!
Awesome from Awesome…
Yesterday morning I received a really sweet email from Ryan McPartlin (Devon ‘Captain Awesome’ Woodcomb). He basically wanted me to thank all of YOU for your support of CHUCK.”Please let all the fans know how much we as a cast appreciate the twittering, facebooking, emailing, etc.” The cast and crew know all you are doing and they wanted to send their thanks.
Can Chuck Be Saved?
The New York Times asked that very question of CHUCK creator Josh Schwartz.
As of this moment, do you know where “Chuck” stands?
Sitting here today, I do not know. Which is a tricky place to be, emotionally. The last two episodes are certainly the best that we’ve done, and I feel like the whole season has been building. To feel this coalescing of the inter-Web forces, in support of the show, has been really remarkable. (Continue reading to hear more about CHUCK from Josh Schwartz)
An Open Letter to NBC…
One of CHUCK’s biggest supporters is none other than one of my favorite TV critics, Alan Sepinwall. Today Alan wrote an open letter to NBC in support of CHUCK. Here’s an excerpt from his letter. Please continue reading the letter and then pass the link on so others can read what Alan has to say. Perhaps his impassioned plea will be the catalyst to get a newbie watching tonight.
Dear Ben, Marc and Angela: I know this is a busy time for you. Two weeks from today, you’re going to be announcing your prime-time schedule for the 2009-10 TV season, and you still need to figure out how to make that work when you’re devoting the 10 o’clock hour to Jay Leno five nights a week. So I’ll get right to the point:
If that schedule doesn’t include “Chuck,” I’m going to be very unhappy. And, I think, you might come to regret it, too.
Why, when you have such a tight schedule, would you bring back a show that routinely finishes a distant fourth in its time slot? Well, beside the fact that it’s one of the most brutal time slots on television — up against “Dancing with the Stars,” “House” and the CBS comedies (not to mention “Chuck” co-creator Josh Schwartz’s “Gossip Girl” on the CW) — I can think of a bunch of reasons, both creative and financial, for continuing to follow the comic adventures of nerd-turned-spy Chuck (Zachary Levi) as he saves the world while trying to get that computer of government intelligence out of his head.
1. Product integration. It’s more necessary than ever, as you try to make money while more and more viewers are using their DVRs to skip commercials. And few shows on your air are better-served to shill for the sponsors than “Chuck.”
Chuck’s day job is at an electronics store; his boss, Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence), is a relentless chow-hound, and his spy missions regularly involve cool cars and other gadgets. Right there, you’ve got opportunities to seamlessly insert almost any kind of product into the narrative. Maybe you ask them to put the beloved Crown Vic of Chuck’s surly handler Casey (Adam Baldwin) in the shop again and show him temporarily tooling around in a Prius and discovering that he really likes fuel efficiency.
And unlike those smart alecks over on “30 Rock,” Schwartz, Chris Fedak and the rest of the “Chuck” writers don’t feel the need to make fun of product integration even as they’re doing it. They have no problem being shameless about it, like the scene in last week’s episode where Chuck’s friend Morgan (Joshua Gomez) tried to butter up Big Mike by bringing him a Subway $5 foot-long. “The Price Is Right” isn’t as complimentary of its prizes as Big Mike was of that Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki. If blatant pimping is the price of continued existence, they (and we) are more than happy to pay it.
2. Recession escapism. “Escapism” seems to be buzzword du jour in your business as you try to find what people will want to watch in this harsh economic climate. As a mixture of farce and cool spy action, “Chuck” fits the bill perfectly. I’m a professional TV watcher, and even I have to admit there are some great shows on television these days that I need to brace myself to watch. Never “Chuck.” It’s always the highlight — and greatest relief — of my day, week after week.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: Look Into Their Eyes and You Will See What They Know

Comments Off on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: Look Into Their Eyes and You Will See What They Know
Hey everyone! Desperate Housewives was back tonight with a tribute episode to Edie, who, after several brushes with death, finally bit the dust. Each of the housewives took time to reminiscence about some of their more positive experiences with Edie throughout the years. Each scenario had a common theme; Edie using her unique personality to help each housewife through a difficult time in their life.
The format of this episode reminded me of the 100th episode; I didn’t think this episode was nearly as good though. Edie’s narration wasn’t working for me, especially at the end when the ladies were scattering her ashes. It got way too corny. I’m not sure what exactly was off with this episode. The plot just seemed way too contrived for me. The whole, “let’s take turns telling stories about Edie” especially felt contrived. And, throughout the whole episode, I couldn’t help but wonder why Traver’s father wasn’t the one telling him that Edie died. The ladies barely knew him and to just show up at his boarding school was a little bizarre. Speaking of Travers, he’s grown up quite a bit! I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.
Now for the positive. I absolutely loved the Gabby versus Edie competition in the bar. Both Nicolette Sheridan and Eva Longoria Parker looked great and were at the top of their game. Watching a single Gabby duke it out with Edie was hilarious. The scene on the playground wasn’t bad either, although Edie’s premonition of her early death was a little melodramatic.
PARKS AND RECREATION: Canvassing

My apologies to Erik and PARKS & RECREATION fans for just posting this now. Still in L.A. and as luck would have it I have no internet connection in the hotel. Posting is almost impossible…not entirely impossibly (as you are reading this now), but it’s not easy. Thanks for your patience.
With last week’s pilot receiving mixed reviews, the Parks & Recreation staff must have felt a tinge of pressure leading into their sophomore effort. Though I enjoyed the premiere, my expectations were that another visit with the folks from Pawnee would provide funnier moments and a clearer direction for each of the primary characters. In the spirit of subcommittee lingo, I am happy to report that progress is being made on both those fronts, and ask that we reconvene in seven days to gather additional information!
The decision to send the P&R team on canvassing missions exposed a schism that can be used to produce humorous moments each week. In one corner, we feel Leslie Knope’s steadfast belief in the power of public service. In the other corner, we hear the citizens of Pawnee express their skepticism about local government’s capacity to effect change in a positive way. When those two forces collide, hilarity ensues.
With Greg Daniels and Michael Schur at the helm, I was confident that P&R would find the funny in the most uncomfortable moments. Beginning with the cold open, when Tom conveniently forgot to supply the most important ingredient for an Easter Egg Hunt, there were several unforgettable scenes. My mouth literally dropped open when Mark, Tom, and April discovered that they were interviewing a registered sex offender. Paul Schneider’s delivery of the line, “April, please stand behind me,” made me double over in my chair. Later, Leslie’s decision to question Kate Spivack’s affection for her children showed that Ms. Knope’s world view omits any respect for people who oppose parks!
BONES: Mayhem on a Cross

My apologies to Seeleybaby and BONES fans for just posting this now. Still in L.A. and as luck would have it I have no internet connection in the hotel. Posting is almost impossible…not entirely impossibly (as you are reading this now), but it’s not easy. Thanks for your patience.
There is more than one kind of family.
That is my favorite underlying theme of the entire BONES series, and tonight was a special reminder of that. For those of you who don’t know exactly what I am talking about, I highly recommend that you rent seasons one, two, and even three, if you are new to the show, and watch them. It is a beautiful journey of, yes, misfits.
To be honest, I was all prepared to be disappointed by tonight’s episode. Knowing Gordon Gordon Wyatt was returning made me worry that I would hate the way it turned out (I’m looking at you, Hero in the Hold) but it was well done. I was the opposite of disappointed. And I feel like the actors really bring it each week. I feel like they respect the characters very much, and therefore respect us as viewers by being ‘caretakers’ of the characters we love so much. That combined with a spectacular case makes me a very happy Seels.
The Case:
A skeleton used as a prop during a Norwegian death metal concert is discovered to be actual human remains. And this week’s body was just how Brennan and I both like them, no flesh. Booth and Brennan had to wade through this dark world of high decibels and higher egos and figure out who wanted Mayhem (the ex-bassist turned skeleton prop) dead. There were several suspects, and for once the case didn’t take quite such an enormous backseat to the relationships. They coexisted, which is how I like it.
The Squints:
Not too much here, so I’m not going to list them one by one. They each did their jobs to help solve the case, which is good. I will talk about Sweets and Dr. Wyatt, however.
30 ROCK: Jackie Jormp-Jomp

“I’m back, nerds!” And not a moment too soon. While I enjoy seeing all the, um, “colors” of Liz Lemon’s home life, I really do prefer it when they keep her locked up in the office with the usual bunch of bananas.
Of course she would fall in with a band of bored, privileged divorcees and end up drinking, shopping, and Botoxing her way through her two-week S-E-X probation (sweet montage, btw). And turning a group of seemingly harmless boozehounds into an Upper West Side fight club (“the pain proves we’re alive”) made perfect sense to those of us who actually inhabit the Upper West Side. But something about the pacing tends to feel off when Liz is interacting with an entirely different group of people, and this episode was the most laugh-free of the season for me. Right up till the end, that is, as she chastises Jenna and Tracy in a standard speech of exasperation, only with her patented anger replaced by a big ol’ grin that nicely offsets her big ol’ black eye, and knowing it’s the grin that terrifies them.
The Jack/Jenna pairing was a welcome twist, though, mostly because Alec Baldwin’s performance manages to both ground and heighten Jenna’s deeply ingrained lunacy, since Jack is just as crazy as she is but in a more straightforward, businesslike way. (My favorite bit was his wordless reaction to Dora the Explorer’s backpack bumping Jenna from the red carpet.) I also like that it’s the (true) revelation of her age that leads Jenna to sabotage the chances for her own increasingly horrible-sounding film, as well as the paparazzi mistaking her for Dina Lohan at the Kids’ Choice Awards. But not involving Liz in Jack’s Tupac-ing scheme made the whole storyline feel too trivial, although having his fix fail in a way that Liz’s likely wouldn’t have (debatable, I guess) is what leads to her triumphant return in the end.

Greetings from Los Angeles. You don’t know how nice it is to actually type that and know that you’ll be able to read it. The internet dead zone that I’ve been in since Monday has been treacherous. Only I would end up in a hotel room with no internet access. Seriously, blogging from my iPhone is a real pain in the ass. But I’m so happy to report that I moved hotel rooms and I’m back online.
Paley Update…Kinda
- The DR. HORRIBLE panel was fantastic! I snagged second row, center seating. If only NPH was in the country – we could have had a moment. Next time, Doogie. Next time.
- Last night was DOLLHOUSE and I thought the panel was really interesting. Seems that there is some hope for Season 2. Who knew? Not Joss, but he seems really excited.
Many, many recaps of both panels are online. Check them out.
Tonight is THE BIG BANG THEORY and I’ll be sure to share the highlights tomorrow (now that I can get online). I’ll be upfront and center for Sheldon…YAY!
GREEK Row
I wish I had time to share a proper recap but I’m going to be on the move early today. We’re heading out and going to the set of GREEK. They don’t start filming until May but we’re going to go check out the set and hang with Cappie and Rebecca Logan! Yes, I will be meeting Cappie (Scott Michael Foster) today. What to wear? I’m a little intimidated by Rebecca (Dilshad Vadsaria) – the Senator’s daughter can be a real ice queen. Plus I’m sure she’ll be watching me closely. Clearly she’ll be worried that I might snag Cappie’s heart.
If you have any questions for Scott or Dilshad send them my way soon!
Looking forward to another great day here in L.A.
As always, I’ll be sharing updates from my adventure throughout the day on Twitter (www.twitter.com/gmmr)
BONES: The Cinderella in the Cardboard
April 16, 2009 by Sarah Curtis

Gosh, Daisy is annoying. She just is. Sweets can do better I think. Even though her character is kind of funny, and Carla Gallo is divine as an actress, I still cringe every time she is on screen. It was almost enough to distract me from the MOST DISGUSTING CORPSE in BONES history. Dis. Gusting.
But the best part is the news that Booth only gives guys hugs to Brennan, not to actual guys. Good stuff.
The Case:
The outline of a woman’s body is imprinted on some large cardboard slabs, causing some to believe it’s a religious sign. Thankfully (?), it’s actually the body of a young woman. And also thankfully, Brennan and Booth’s bickering on religion shifts into bickering on relationships right away. And we get to the crux of the case, the woman was engaged but also involved in an online dating service. Until she died. Oh, it was so disgusting, that body, and for one of the first times in history, I thought the writers were a little cruel towards the corpse. Usually there’s a respect there, but I could have done without all the pizza references from Wendell. Speaking of…
The Squints:
Wendell: I thought he was kind of weird this episode. I’m glad he was less “Jenny from the block” than normal, but still, he just was way over the top on some parts. The post-it stuff was funny, pizza=not funny.
Cam: Still no mention of Michelle this week, unless I missed it. So I guess we’ll all just pretend that never happened? Or….

HOUSE: Saviors

Last week, I predicted that Dr. Kutner’s unexpected suicide would force his colleagues to move forward and tackle big decisions in their personal and professional lives. Though the show’s producers were criticized for orchestrating Kal Penn’s exit from the show in a somewhat illogical fashion, their first chance to reset the ensemble cast in the post-Kutner world was a success. With a phenomenal script from Thomas L. Moran and Eli Attie to guide them, the House team offered up a slew of strong performances, delivered a legitimately shocking return, and gathered momentum toward the season finale.
Dr. Allison Cameron has been MIA for most of Season Five, as House’s newest proteges took her screen time, in addition to her seat in the conference room. In Cameron’s absence, the audience was treated to a heavy dose of Thirteen, a narrative of Dr. Taub’s mid-life crisis, and an extended introduction to the quirky ways of Private Investigator Lucas Douglas (remember him?). Though the newer cast members have performed admirably, it has been the audience’s loss to have Jennifer Morrison missing from our TV screens. This week, the wisdom behind the song, “Don’t Know What You’ve Got ‘Til It’s Gone,” was substantiated by an incredible performance.
Tonight, Jennifer Morrison auditioned for the role of prime time television star, and she nailed it! Cameron’s story was rich with emotional heft and critical confrontations, and it was a treat to watch Morrison navigate every twist and turn. As the hour unfolded, I could not piece together Cameron’s motivation for sticking with the mystery patient. With questions rattled at her from all sides, House’s favorite ER doc held onto her secret. Was the patient connected to Cameron through family or circumstance? Did Cuddy’s inquisition reveal a long-lasting feeling for House that Cameron could never shake? These possibilities, along with a host of others, were plausible enough to consider, and made the ultimate revelation about Chase’s ring all the more powerful.
CHUCK vs. The First Kill

SHUT UP AGAIN. Seriously, when did this show get SO GOOD? I don’t even know where to start.
This week was basically an episode about trust, which worked really well at making the spy plot and the Buy More plot complement each other. Plus, it added some tension to the episode for me—when it turned out that Morgan’s trust had been misplaced, it made me worry more that Chuck’s had been also.
Emmett taking over the Buy More is such a disaster. Not for the show, although I would like to see this lead to his ultimate firing (I don’t HATE his character, I’m just sort of over it). Plus, not only did Morgan get the Kiss of Death (shout out to the Godfather movies, which I’ve never seen but still recognized the reference), it seems that most of the Buy More employees have turned on him as well. And fairly, at that—he led them down the wrong path. I did enjoy watching the scene where they were all meeting about what to do about Emmett asking them to behave. It totally reminded me of Wallace Shawn in The Princess Bride. And I loved the use and reprise of “We’re Not Gonna Take It”—in fact, this was a pretty good episode for music that’s been around for awhile (I want to call it classic rock, and yet I hesitate at referring to Twisted Sister as such, at least not yet). Plus, Lester in his Nerd Herd uniform sans pants? Genius.
One of my friends messaged me on Facebook after the show to tell me that she loves Chuck but didn’t care for the Subway product placement. I told her that after watching years of product placement on Smallville, everything else looks like effing Shakespeare in comparison. (Seriously, did anyone see the ENTIRE EPISODE of Smallville that revolved around Stride gum? Good LORD.) She said that mostly she wasn’t down with Morgan including the jingle, but I had to disagree, because singing “five dollar foot long” while giving someone a sandwich is TOTALLY something I would do in real life, so I buy it. Also, it’s right before lunch and I’m getting hungry, so we have to stop talking about it right now.
Also, Big Mike getting sent back to “gen pop”? Another prison reference! And I’m telling you guys, it never gets old.
CASTLE: Always Buy Retail
April 14, 2009 by Philiana
Filed under #1 featured, Castle, Posts by Philiana
Instead of focusing on the week’s murder mystery, last night’s episode was strictly about Castle and his past relationship with his first ex-wife, Meredith. While there was an interesting spin on the Nigerian religious killings that had to do with knockoffs on Canal Street, Aldis Hodge (“Leverage”) and symbolic images from the Vudon religion that Castle somehow had knowledge of, it was like an afterthought – especially when viewers were thrust into the raunchy, R-rated action of Castle and his former significant other in the first few seconds. So even though procedurals have stand-alone storylines that often display or present different aspects of the show’s main characters, today the focus will remain solely on Castle and his family.
It has been mentioned many times before, but there is no harm in saying this again: “Castle” earns its charm and endearment through the depictions of Castle’s non-workplace encounters between his wise-beyond-her-years daughter Alexis and his former Broadway diva of a mother Martha. It is the way Castle, who can be overly cheesy and bratty at times, is brought down to a human level and seen as someone we could all somehow relate to and respect. The thing that is interesting about the Castle character is the lack of urgency or significance the writers have shown in regards to his single parenthood status. It is not everyday (especially on television) when a good-looking and successful businessman/creative type has an unconventional family life. There were several moments in the past few episodes in which I asked myself, “How did Castle get into his current situation? How was it decided that Castle would be the day-to-day parental figure to Alexis?”
Last night’s episode briefly implied that perhaps it was Alexis’ mother’s lackadaisical nature and professional career as an actress that prompted her to leave and pursue her dreams of making it on the marquee. Meredith, who can be boxed into the generic Los Angeles high-maintenance girl stereotype, draws comparisons to Castle’s wild, party-loving mother – and Castle, though in a joking way, responds to his mother’s question about why he even married her in the first place. He simply stated that she was just like his own mom. Ouch. But, knowing his mother, she would probably consider it a compliment, even though she despises Meredith like nobody’s business.
24 Debrief: Day 7 | 1:00 am-2:00 am
April 14, 2009 by Philboy

It was a big episode this week and let’s get started.
Debrief
- President Taylor told everyone that the reason she cancelled the air attack against Starkwood was that she didn’t have enough intel. While in Starkwood, Tony confirms that Hodges has missiles and is ready to launch them. Jack tells Taylor that Tony can go in and blow up the missiles. Taylor all but says yes, not being able to give the official order.
- Jonas met with the President in the Oval Office. He says that Starkwood has been pushed out of the government, compared to the previous administration, and that Starkwood hasn’t been allowed to do their job. He is proposing a partnership between the President and Starkwood. The President accuses Starkwood of being a terrorist organization and of killing her son (remember back in the day?!).
- Tony goes in and, at the last possible second (of course) destroys the canisters. Upon hearing that the bioweapon has been destroyed, Taylor arrests Hodges and Greg for being general douchebags. While he’s being taken away, he says that he’s “just a small cog in a very big machine” and that she “can’t even imagine what she’s up against.” Tony is OK after the explosion, but Larry has to take him back into custody.
- After everything was OK, Jack called Taylor and asked about getting Tony a pardon. In the middle of the conversation, he blacked out, showing signs of the bioweapon. Taylor has asked to be kept up to date on Jack’s condition. Renee, meanwhile, has asked Kim to come in to see if she’s a match for the stem cell transplant. Jack is initially upset until he finds out that Kim has been looking for him all day after seeing him at the trial on TV. He goes and sees her and they talk a lot of stuff out. Jack apologizes for all of the pain he might of caused Kim. Kim apologizes for not taking responsibility for her actiosns and blaming Jack for everything. Even though they are bonding, Jack asks her to leave, saying that dealing with the disease would be unbearable with her there.
- A Starkwood operative is caught by an FBI agent trying to leave the compund with a canister. He gets away and is eventually caught up to with the helicopter with Larry and Tony in it. The car pulls into a parking lot and, after landing, Larry and the op get into a firefight, with Larry eventually getting shot with a high-powered rifle. Leaning over him, Tony ends up calling off the operative and killing Larry himself. Yes, indeed, Tony is a bad guy.
Agent Philboy’s Assessment
Man, did a lot happen this week! There were big developments on all fronts and a big disappointment for me in the weak entrance of Kim Bauer.
First up, the President. I know that this episode was a game changer and that anything could happen, but, if Taylor makes it out of this as President and the writers decide to bring her back next season, is Jack being poised as a government worker again? She has taken a serious interest in him and not just as an asset to the government. She understands how much he has sacrificed today and isn’t going to forget it anytime soon.

Goooood morning from sunny California. Ok perhaps it’s not yet sunny as it’s only 7am here, but I can feel the sunshine just ready to bust out.
I made it here safely last night after a mostly pleasant flight. I was bummed to find out that Virgin America doesn’t carry any of the major networks, but thrilled when I discovered his-speed WiFi! Being online for the whole flight made it fly by. Still I would have liked to watch some Monday night TV…oh well. Rae from RamblingsofaTVWhore.com bought a cable to hook up her laptop to the flat screen in our room so hopefully we can at least get caught up on CHUCK this morning. Fingers crossed we can get it working.
I was only on the ground about 2 hours when I had my first celebrity sighting – Adrian Grenier from ENTOURAGE. Vincent Chase FTW!
Tonight is the first night of my Paley adventure and we are starting things off with the panel I’m most looking forward to – DR. HORRIBLE’S SING ALONG BLOG. I’m so excited. Hope to see some of you there!
The wireless in our hotel room is horrible, so right now I’m in the hotel’s business center (in my Flonkerton tee-Pj’s none the less). I’ll try to get updated a little earlier than this during the week, but I can’t promise I won’t sleep in.
Ok enough babbling from me. Check out a few highlights from tonight’s TV schedule. What will YOU be watching tonight? Spill it.
