Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Thursday, April 9, 2009

April 9, 2009 by

I triple dog dare you to say that there isn’t anything on TV tonight.  There will be no flipping through the stations trying to find something to watch, not with this lineup.  With two episodes of THE OFFICE, the premiere of PARKS AND RECREATION a new episode of 30 ROCK and the premiere of SOUTHLAND, my remote will be pointed to NBC all night.

Don’t forget to check out the premiere of CBS’s HARPER’S ISLAND tonight at 10pm. It’s a limited series (ending on July 2nd) which might be appealing to those who like only to commit to a series for a short run (much like the networks these days). I’ve seen the first episode and it’s campy fun but haunting enough that I was a little scared (although it doesn’t take much). A little more on HARPER’S ISLAND today.

Will you be going back and forth between the channels or staying with one network?  What will YOU be watching tonight?

The Office | 8:00pm on NBC
“The Dream Team
Jim faces off with Charles during a soccer game in the Dunder Mifflin parking lot; Michael finds himself afraid to face the workday. [GMMR: Uh oh. We know from “Basketball” that Mr. Halpert can’t get quite competitive.  Will he be able to hold back with the new boss?]

Here’s the cold open to “Dream Team”.

In the Motherhood | 8pm on ABC
“Bully”
Jane stands up to a bully at Annie’s school, but also adopts some tried-and-true tormentor’s tactics to get her way at work; Emily’s role as head mom at the preschool is challenged by a newcomer; Rosemary tries to reform the band she had in the 1980s.

Survivor: Tocantins | 8pm on CBS
“The Dragon Slayer”

Old alliances crumble as the newly merged tribe begins to scheme; an exiled pair makes a shocking discovery.

Bones| 8pm on Fox
“The Science in the Physicist”
Booth and Brennan investigate when pulverized human remains are found in a garbage bag; Angela’s father (Billy F. Gibbons) seeks revenge on Hodgins.

Samantha Who | 8:30pm on ABC
“The Amazing Racist”
A series of misunderstandings makes Samantha realize she needs to be a better friend to Frank; Andrea worries about losing her glamorous perks when her celebrity boyfriend is outed as gay.

Parks and Recreation | 8:30pm on NBC | Series Premiere
In the series pilot, mid-level bureaucrat Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) takes on what should be a fairly simple project: turn an abandoned construction site into a community park, but navigating the local government of Pawnee, Ind., proves to be quite the challenge. [GMMR: Check out my advance review of Parks and Recreation]

The Office | 9:00pm on NBC
“The Michael Scott Paper Company”
Dwight and Andy strike up an unlikely friendship and plan a hunting trip. Regional Supervisor Charles asks Jim for a “rundown,” and Jim spends his day trying to figure out what that is. Michael hosts a Paper & Pancakes luncheon. [GMMR: Two new OFFICE episode tonight.  Is it my birthday?]

30 Rock | 9:30pm on NBC
“Cutbacks”
TGS employees worry about upcoming budget cuts; Tracy and Jenna think that Kenneth is hiding a dark secret.

Southland | 10pm on NBC | Series Premiere
In the opener of the police drama, rookie cop Ben Sherman (Benjamin McKenzie) has a tough first day with his seasoned partner, Det. John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz), who prepares him for the realities of working the streets of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, a young girl is swiped from her yard. [GMMR: Watch the series premiere of SOUTHLAND on GMMR via Hulu right now. Let us know what YOU think.]

Harper’s Island | 10pm on CBS | Series Premiere
Seven years after her mother and five others were murdered on Harper’s Island, Abby Mills returns for the wedding of her best friend, but a week of celebration turns to a fight for survival as people start dying.

Also playing…

  • CSI | 9:00pm on CBS: Catherine finds a connection between Nick’s case of a deceased skydiver and a mysterious double murder.
  • Hells Kitchen | 9:00pm on Fox: Each chef must use 14 ingredients to create a dish to impress chef Ramsay; one chef is sent to the medic.

Exclusive: On the Set of CHUCK with Zachary Levi

In honor of CHUCK Week here on GMMR, I thought I’d share with you again some of the highlights on my most recent visit to the set of CHUCK.

“We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine.” A catchy Beatles tune, yes, but also the song that was stuck in my head for days after visiting the set of CHUCK..  Why?  Because it’s one of the many songs that CHUCK star Zachary Levi would break out into during each and every cut.  His singing was infectious, and on this particular Beatles tune he was joined by co-stars Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin and more than a few of the crew working to set up the scene. That’s the type of vibe you get walking on to the set of CHUCK. It’s a fun place to be.  And I had a blast while I was there.

Our CHUCK adventure, which took place a few months ago, started just a few minutes after my friend Steph (who tagged along for the trip) and I arrived on the Warner Bros set.  As we waited to meet up with the fabulous Jamie to show us around, Ms. Yvonne Strahovski herself walked right by us and on to the stage.  She looked stunning, as usual, in her signature Orange Orange uniform. Seriously, it’s a sin to look that good.

As soon as we walked on to the set we were immediately greeted by a gaggle of nice people who went out of their way to get us set up with chairs, sides (the script they are shooting for the day), and headphones to listen in on the dialogue as the scene was shot. They were kind enough to let us get settled in right next to director Patrick Norris so we could watch along on the monitors.

As the scene set was being set up we could hear the booming voice of Mr. Levi. The aforementioned singing along with his general wackiness had everyone cracking up. And though I wasn’t intentionally eavesdropping I did overhear one of the women on the crew say that he was like this everyday.  “He really sets the tone for everyone. He’s always like this.  It’s a lot of fun. He makes sure of it.”

Who Went Home on AMERICAN IDOL?

Looking to find out who went home during the first week of Season 9? Click here to find out: Who Went Home on AMERICAN IDOL (Feb. 25, 2010)

————

PREVIOUS POST

Should be an interesting night. In this day and age of TiVos and the such, what happens when a show runs over and a certain percentage of your voting audience misses an entire performance? Of course there is absolutely zero chance that Adam Lambert is going home tonight, but it was a big faux pas and it needs to be addressed.

Since it won’t be Adam going home, who will it be? Hopefully Scott! Dare to dream.

I’ll be live blogging IDOL tonight, so if you’re watching feel free to share your comments as we go.

9:06pm: Frankie Avalon surprises the audience with an impromptu performance of “Venue”. The audience in the theater and the studio wonders who the hell the old guy is on the stage. Simon looks shocked and thrilled.

9:07pm: My computer crashes and needs to be rebooted. Really? During an IDOL live blog? Thanks for nothing.

9:09pm: The Idol wannabes take the stage and sing “Can’t Get You Our of My Head” LIVE (gasp). Well, that better have been live because it was God awful. I couldn’t tell which one (Scott), but one of the guys (Scott) was way off.

9:12pm: This week’s Ford music shoot music had the group singing Britney Spears’ “Circus”. It sounded like a really bad high school choir. Individually they are great, but together it’s a huge embarrassment.

9:18pm: Let the results begin.

Matt Giraud “Part Time Lovers” IDOL Top 8 – April 7th

April 8, 2009 by
Filed under American Idol, American Idol Recap

Yikes, I’ve been inundated with requests to post some more of the AMERICAN IDOL performances from last night. I can’t post them all but I will try to post some of my favorites. That includes Matt Giraud. Matt was an early favorite of mine. I think this guy is super talented. He hasn’t been as consistent as he needs to be. But when he channels his inner Timberlake things seem to work out for him.

Matt is up there with Kris Allen and Adam Lambert in my Top 3.

The beginning of this song is fierce! Watch yourself.

“Racial Sensitivity”

Adam Lambert: Top 8 “Mad World” | American Idol

AMERICAN IDOL went over tonight…way over. Those of us watching on our DVRs missed the final performance of the night from Adam Lambert. Thankfully the wonderful people over at Rickey.org posted the performance so we can see what Fox denied us.

AMAZING!!!

A standing ovation from Simon Cowell. That’s not something you see….ever!

AMERICAN IDOL: Top 8 Performances

Adam’s hair has lot some poof. Matt’s sporting a fancy chapeau. Alison is channeling Sydney Bristow. Kris Allen is still hot. Scott MacIntyre should be watching this show at home from his couch. It’s Tuesday night and THIS is AMERICAN IDOL.

Tonight the Top 8 will be singing songs from the year they were born. If past seasons are any indication, it’s a pretty wide playing field in terms of music selection. As long as somewhere in the world, someone sang a song during the year the contestants were born it qualifies.

As always I’ll be providing my comments as I watch, then we’ll see what the judges have to say. Finally it’s up to YOU to share your comments below.

You ready?

Ok, we’re not even through the judges intros and I already have the chills. Dude, The Observer is in the house!! That guy freaks me out. Nice work Fox and FRINGE. (Although I think you can have been a little less obvious, no?)

And straight from his court appearance Chris Brown is hanging in the IDOL audience. Ok, maybe not but did you see the guy sitting behind Randy tonight? He sure looked like him.

Danny Gokey (1980)
“Stand By Me”

1-866-IDOLS-01
My Thoughts: See what I mean? “Stand By Me” in 1980? I think not. Try 1961. I got ripped last week for criticizing Danny’s performance, but once again there were note issues.  He kept going flat. I’m sure the judges won’t mention it though. The performance picked up in the last two minutes, but overall I thought it was very boring. I think Danny needs to step up his game.

The Judges: Randy declared that this is a vocal talent show and Danny has talent.  Good thing Randy used his time to comment on Allison’s clothes last week with hardly mentioning her vocals.  Kara thought Danny was unique and that he sang it well. Paula thought he set the bar so high that everyone will be playing catch up all night.  What? Simon thought overall it was great.

[Loving the GLEE promo during the commercial break. It makes me want to stop IDOL and watch GLEE again!]

Kris Allen (1985)
“All She Wants to do is Dance”

1-866-IDOLS-02
My Thoughts: Kris wanted to be a taxi driver when he was little. I’d ride in his cab anytime. Kris is performing from that weird stage within the audience.  I’m not a fan.  I think it feels forced and awkward. Interesting arrangement for this song.  It reminded me a bit of Jason Mraz. This wasn’t my favorite performance of Kris by far.  It was missing something.

The Judges: Kara wasn’t a fan of the arrangement and said it wasn’t very youthful. Paula said he was very likable (uh oh). Simon thought it was indulgent, boring, forgettable and he didn’t like the song choice.  Randy lost Kris in the arrangement. Not a good night for my boy. That’s ok, I’ll still vote for him.

It’s only Day 2 of CHUCK Week here on GMMR and it’s been amazing. Applause to each and every one of you who left a comment, sent Tweets, shared the links – so fantastic! But we’ve got a full week to try to get some new people to watch, so let’s keep up the momentum.

In addition to SB’s review of last night’s CHUCK vs. The Dream Job, I thought I’d share one of my favorite (recent) CHUCK moments. The music on CHUCK is the best on TV. This we know. But when Jeffster covered one of my favorite songs of all time, I was beside myself with glee.

So from me to you to Africa.  I present…Jeffster.

Here’s a roundup of others sites who are talking about CHUCK today. Please be sure to thank them for showing the CHUCK love. And visit “Inside the Intersect” throughout the day, all week for the latest CHUCK posts.

Be a Nerd. Join the Herd. Save Chuck. Lend your voice to other CHUCK fans – both new and old.

First I wanted to post a message that Zachary Levi sent to Zachary-Levi.net about all the various Save Chuck campaigns (not just ours but those that came well before we got involved.)

“Its amazing to see how many campaigns have sprung up for the sole purpose of keeping Chuck around. To know that our show evokes that kind of support within our fanbase is overwhelming. On behalf of our entire cast & crew, I personally want to thank each and every one of you who has taken up the fight. And I ask that if we are blessed enough to provide you all with another season, that you would fight just as passionately as you are now to spread the word about the show to those who haven’t given it a chance yet.

Much Love & God Bless,

zac

  • What the F#%k? What Aren’t You Watching Chuck? – “Why hasn’t NBC picked up Chuck (also critically lauded and ratings deprived) for its third season yet? Seriously? Meanwhile they have time to bully the Boston affiliate and force them to show Leno 5 times a week? And they don’t have time to renew the awesomeness of Chuck yet?” (Tapeworthy)
  • Chuck: Episode 219 – “This episode was one of the more hilarious in recent memory.” (Great Minds Think Different)

If your post isn’t here please let me know and I will add it.

RESCUE ME Premieres Tonight!

April 7, 2009 by

OH GOOD GOVERNOR! All day long I felt that I was forgetting something.  I knew April 7th had significant meaning but I couldn’t remember why.  But I just realized that tonight is the season premiere of RESCUE ME.  How could I forget that? A million apologies.

On tonight’s fifth season premiere, Tommy copes with the loss of his father and a new man in Janet’s life (gues star Michael J. Fox). Sheila finds a different way to deal with her issues while Sean, Franco, and Mike concoct a surefire way to get rich and laid.

I’ve had the first eight episodes of RESCUE ME forever but I haven’t found the time to sit down and watch them. I’m so disappointed in myself.  But on the other hand I’m happy to be able to watch tonight.  Drop me a line if you’re going to be watching. We definitely needs to talk about it tomorrow.

Watch RESCUE ME tonight at 10:00pm on FX.

HOUSE: Simple Explanation

Television, at its best, can provoke howls of laughter or tears of sadness from the loyal viewers who come back each week to their favorite shows. That emotional investment is one of the key provisions of the bargain we strike with the writers, directors, actors, and other players who bring those programs into our living rooms. As an audience, we can forgive a joke that does not resonate or a performance that falls short of expectations, so long as we can relish in the brilliance of stories that reach beyond the norm to shock our systems. The shocking suicide of Dr. Lawrence Kutner was the most surprising death on my television since Rosalind Shays took an ill-fated step into an elevator shaft on L.A. Law in 1991. Unlike the maudlin journeys to the great beyond that have become staples of other medical dramas, this loss felt like a swift kick to the gut.

After watching the episode a second time, and considering the ramifications that this tragedy appeared to have on the rest of House’s team, I reached a morbid conclusion. Kutner’s death was necessary to keep this show on track. After a season full of creative forks in the road, the Princeton Plainsboro team will now be forced to move forward and make clear choices about their personal and professional lives.

For fans of Kal Penn who may be worried about how this story came about, I am happy to share news about his exciting new public service job. Mr. Penn will be working for President Obama as Associate Director in the White House office of Public Liaison. Nice new digs, right? For more on Penn’s new adventures, and the series of events that led to his departure from House, I would encourage you to read Michael Ausiello’s interviews with the actor and House’s executive producers on EW.com. I normally do not plug other web sites, but Mr. Ausiello was kind enough to tweet about Give Me My Chuck week here at GMMR, so it is only fair to share the love, right? You can click directly to his Kutner piece at http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/04/house-exclusive.html

CHUCK vs. The Dream Job

April 7, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, Chuck, Chuck Recaps, Posts by SB

Hey guys! Thanks to everyone who participated in the live chat last night! It was so fun, and I LOVE community TV watching. But please please please be sure to join in the discussion in the comments! Even if you usually lurk, please come out of the woodwork. This is the week where we all share our love for Chuck! Now, let’s get this party started!

SO much happened last night that I actually had to go back and watch again. I did miss the Buy More crew (okay, a lot), but I know that there just really wasn’t time for them. And we did get Jeffster running interference for Chuck at the conference, so that helped to curb the craving a little bit.

I think that what really stands out to me about this episode was that it was subtle. A lot of people did a really great job acting, and I can only imagine that getting such regularly great performances out of so many people at once has to be a special talent. Captain Awesome was SO good—he played slightly awkward so well. Sarah didn’t say much in this episode, but as always, it was all written perfectly on her face. Seriously, that girl is a gem, and I can’t imagine anyone else in the part. Scott Bakula was amazingly cast as Chuck’s father (seriously, I could absolutely imagine them sharing DNA), and he played maybe-genius/maybe-crazy in just the right way. And even though we all kind of knew it was coming, the big reveal was still awesome. All Quantum Leap jokes were totally lost on me, though, so please feel encouraged to share those in the comments!

I mentioned last night in the chat that I wasn’t crazy about Chevy Chase in the Roark role and that I kept trying to recast him in my mind, but he did grow on me a bit in the second watching. He made those not-quite-funny self-deprecating-but-not-really jokes so perfectly that I think his character was just a little hateable (totally a word, trust me). And since that’s what his character was supposed to be, I have to give him props for that.

24 Debrief: Day 7 | 12:00 am-1:00 am

April 7, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, 24, 24 Recaps, Posts by Philboy, Save CHUCK

Well, we had a hilarious/awesome episode this week, but before we get started, I want to talk a little bit about “Chuck” in honor of “Chuck Week” here at GMMR. So, if you’re tired of the “Chuck” rhetoric, skip down to the Debrief.

“24” and “Chuck” have a lot in common. They’re both about spies and agents. They both have main characters who…umm…well, OK, Chuck and Jack Bauer have nothing in common. Jack would have killed Chuck within two minutes of being charged to protect him. In fact, Jack would have joined Fulcrum just to have the chance to kill Chuck, out of spite.

But nonetheless, anyone who has ever read my witty biography at the bottom of all my pages, knows that “Chuck” is one of my can’t miss shows. I watch a lot of TV and Chuck is one of those shows that I make time for. It’s witty, it’s got everything that a contemporary show looks for: an awesome and compelling ongoing story as well as fun and intriguing weekly adventures. This show is quality, and it needs to stay on the air. And, to do that, it seems, members of the Nerd Herd like me need your help. So, please, think about writing a letter, even if it’s a quick one, to the powers that be. Thanks!

Alrighty, sorry about that. On to the…

Debrief

  • In looking at Senator Mayer’s records, Jack finds information about Knowles, Starkwood’s Chairman who was secretly working with Mayer to take Starkwood down. Knowles says he knows where the missiles for the bioweapon are and will take Tony there. Larry helps Tony create a diversion to escape and gets captured in the process.
  • Jack is starting to feel the effects of the bioweapon. President Taylor is concerned about him, as is Renee of course. He collapses at one point and the CDC gives him an injection that he will have to take constantly to stay functioning. They say that he can be given a transplant to alleviate the symptoms and family members are the most likely donors. Renee googled Jack and saw Kim’s name, but Jack told her that he and Kim don’t talk anymore and that he doesn’t want to call her.

Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Tuesday, April 7, 2009

April 7, 2009 by

Remember a few short months ago when Tuesday was a relatively manageable TV night? Yeah, so much for that.

There’s plenty of new TV to keep you occupied tonight. My ears will be enjoying some IDOL while my eyes will be enjoying from FRINGE. Speaking of, if you won’t mind being a little spoiled, check out the video down in the FRINGE section of this post. The first 30 seconds had me rolling.

Check out a few highlights from tonight’s TV schedule. What will YOU be watching tonight? Spill it.

American Idol | 8pm on Fox
The eight remaining finalists compete for seven spots.  Tonight the contestants are singing songs from the year they were born. [GMMR: This is always a bit of a wild card night since the contestants always find a loop hole – it could be a song from the 40’s but if someone remade it the year they were born they’re good to go. And for a little perspective, Allison Iraheta will be singing something from the 90’s.  She was born in 1992!!!!]

Reaper | 8pm on The CW
“Underbelly
Sam is led to think that the next escaped soul is an easy catch; Ben tries to not be so clingy with Nina.

The Biggest Loser | 8pm on NBC
The contestants are faced with a temptation challenge; the winner of the challenge chooses which contestant will be eliminated. [GMMR: I’m actually intrigued by the promos I saw.  Looks like the contestants get their hands on some food and totally school it.  Ducky will have to fill me in.]

Fringe | 9pm on Fox
“Inner Child”

A mysterious child who was living alone underground forms an unspoken bond with Olivia; a serial killer resurfaces. [GMMR:FRINGE is back!! The show has been gone forever and someone, and I’m not naming names, has been seriously missing Joshua Jackson.  If you’ve never watched FRINGE before, tonight is a great night to start.  Hopefully the ratings will see a lift in the post-IDOL time slot.]

(Warning! The following is 5 clips from tonight’s episode. Spoilertarians should stay away.)

The Mentalist | 9pm on CBS
A Dozen Red Roses
The team travels to Hollywood when a movie producer is murdered. Marilyn Monroe: Nicholle Tom.

Cupid | 10pm on ABC
“Live and Let Spy”
Trevor thinks he senses a match between Claire’s friend and a private investigator; Felix plans a party for his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit | 10pm on NBC
“Baggage”
Fin and Stabler link the murder of a rising artist to another unsolved homicide, and then they see a pattern possibly connecting these cases to those of a serial killer that another detective (Delroy Lindo) has been searching for and whose cases he’s become territorial over.

My Boys | 10:30pm on TBS
“Private Eyes”
Keeping her new boyfriend a secret from her friends proves difficult for P.J.; Brendan opens a nightclub; Mike finds good reasons to keep his mustache. [GMMR: Seems like I have to watch this one again. I don’t remember too much about Brendan’s night club in this episode. But I do know I love a good stake out!]

Also playing…

  • NCIS | 8pm on CBS: When Abby is asked to take over for a government scientist who has gone missing, the team fears that she will meet the same fate as her predecessor.
  • Dancing with the Stars | 9pm on ABC: Results show. Another celebrity and dance partner are voted off.
  • 90210 | 9pm on The CW: Kelly and Ryan look for Silver; Adrianna and Navid baby-sit for Kelly.
  • Without a Trace | 10pm on CBS: The team finds plenty of suspects when a high-end Russian matchmaker disappears.
  • The Real Housewives on New York City | 10pm on CBS: Jill’s home re-design is complete; Jill partners with Simon for an upcoming tennis match against Ramona and Mario; Bethenny asks Alex to help her design a logo for her line of “SkinnyGirl Margaritas.”
